I know this is 3 years to late but I for one say screw the haters. I'm 51 years old and you can teach an old dog new tricks just yesterday 05/14/21 a buddy of mine brought the N320 pistol powder to my attention and now today Bob's bullets brought this valuable information to me 👍 I have been reloading for about the last 15 years always use Hodgens but it's time to go outside the box. Great video and information 👍
Great vid JRB. Thanks for doing the test with N133 and N135. I have not tested those two powders with Bobs' so it's nice to see some data out there. I was hopping for a little better results with N135, but good shooting anyways JRB, it is what it is. I was the one who said N140 was shooting lights out. For me it produces sub MOA groups with the Bobs' bullets. I seat mid cannelure with a very light crimp. I get Anywhere between 1/2" to 3/4" groups when I do my part with N140. I'm using fully prepped Lake city bass, CCI 41 primers and I weight sorted the Bobs' bullets, brass and primers for the initial testing. I'm also trickling my powder charges much like your doing. Rifle has a Douglas Mk12/spr 1/8 twist Wylde chambered barrel with a matched bolt. I'm Shooting on a bench with bags for support in the front and rear. Varget is also doing well with this bullet for me, much like the groups you posted with Varget. I may try RE-7 powder next just for kicks as that is the powder Sierra lists for the accuracy load in all there 55 grain bullets. For a 8¢ bullet I'm pleased. I personally don't look at this bullet as a Sierra match king, blitz king, Hornday BTHP, Lapua or Berger bullet etc. etc. I look at it as more of a solid quality Match(ish) bulk bullet that's cheap and performs best in its class at 8¢ a bullet. Going forward I will probably just pick Varget for bulk loading of this bullet as it's cheaper than N140 for me. But both shoot great for me with N140 edging it out. Thanks again and I'm really looking forward to the Mk262 cloning. Here are my most accurate and favorite loads with the 77 SMK. 24.0 grains Varget, 24.1 grains N140, 23.2 grains 8208XBR Although the MK262 round is loaded super hot, your gonna have to push it hard. Most find around 23.8 grains of IMR 8208 XBR clones it really well for both accuracy and velocity. I'm sure TAC and ARcomp will be great also, looking forward to your results.
Dude, I completely feel ya going off on your "223 kick." About 2.5 years ago I was shooting a pistol match, and just not having as much fun as I typically would. It was my weekend routine, and I was totally burnt out. I decided to change directions and focus on a long range "223 kick" to change it up. I'm STILL going down the rabbit hole. But hey, this is a hobby and hobbies are meant to be enjoyed. When I get burnt out of this, I'll switch it up again...
Thanks for your vids very educational. I've been hooked at all the testing you have been doing lately. As a new loader (223) your vids are hitting all my questions.
Keep up the good work and nevermind the "experts". The journey you are documenting is one that all reloaders must travel...learning more and more along the way. I enjoy all of your videos but I especially like your 300 blackout videos. I am a 300 blackout fan and you have some of the best videos on CZcams for that caliber.
Rock on brother, love the 223 and 308 vids. Your channel got me into reloading about 3 months ago. I'm having alot off luck with with a 62gr bthp with 8208 xbr from midsouth shooters supply, it is a bulk bullet also. Just a fraction more expensive than Bob's bullet. keep it up look forward to these videos every day!
I've really enjoyed your Bobs' bullets videos. I ordered 1000 of them to try out. Thanks for the free ship. You need to get back with the Bobs' about producing some 30cal stuff at the value of their 22cal bullets.
With respect to your comments on the Lyman powder system, it just so happens that I purchased one of these around the 1st of the year when all the after Christmas sales were going on. I chose it for pretty much the same reasons you did. I haven't used it yet as I am just accumulating components against the day when ammo may be scarce or unavailable. In the meantime, while ammo is available, I am buying it with a bent toward brass that is expensive or rare. I have to say that I am very happy with the video: you showed me exactly what I wanted to see with the machine. As long as I see what you saw with your machine, I am pleased with my decision and it actually got me pumped to start producing some rounds. If you do any more videos with the Lyman, I'd love to see what happens with some BL-C 2 powder which I find the messiest powder that I have used.
I really had accuracy problems when I tried to shoot load development ladders with the magnetospeed attached. Then I tried 10 shots each powder charge, 5 with magnetospeed, 5 without. Accuracy was very different:Group size was about 2,5" at 200m with magnetospeed and
What's up JRB.. Solid work as always... With regards to the Magneto Speed and others comments regarding it's effect on group accuracy. I agree that it negatively effects accuracy, as I have also noticed through my experience. However, its effect is minimal, which I do believe you have shown in the past. Proof of this is your 3/4 MOA group in this video with it attached (the bonus group). So for those out there that believe he should remove it from the barrel and that alone will magically make a 1.0 - 1.5 MOA group shrink to 1/2 MOA, thus revealing a magical load. I believe that dog can be put to rest as unlikely. I personally have never witnessed my Magneto Speed open a group more than 1/4 MOA over what it'll shoot without it. It absolutely changes POI, sometimes to dramatic effect. However, if it is installed properly, the effect on grouping is minimal and extremely repeatable. IMO, it provides valuable data while it's overall effect on grouping is quite minimal. I imagine the F class shooters won't agree with that assessment, however, I haven't seen a F class rifle or load workup in well, any of your videos. They have their equipment, and it is very highly refined and appropriate for their sport, we have ours and it is similarly appropriate for our uses and the capabilities of our weapons. Keep it up JRB... You have some of the best content for reloaders on CZcams
Lyman video was good, i liked it. you pretty much convinced me of buying automated powder measure. I didn't find video jumbled at all. Info was on point and not at all seeming worse than your other videos. keep it but make another one.
thats 25%. thrust me the Lyman 6 throws with better consistency. the only goofy thing is really that its allmost always 0,1 low. like said, you just enter 0,1 higher charge and the whole issue is solved. on top of that, the chargemaster package is double the price of the lyman. i really doubt a few mem buttons are worth $200-300 tbh. Wel maybe if i reloaded for the whole village with 50 calibers in the same week. think im on the same page with johnny on that one. to much switching between bullets and testing and the few petloads i have im able to remember or have them on paper :)
Great job, keep it up I am trying some of Bob's bullets. I normally use Hornady 55 gr. V-MAX or Hornady 55 gr. (#2266). Also have some 70 gr. Speer varmit bullets to try. Normally use WIN 748 as it meters great through progressive powder measure and shoots accurately.
I am intregued by this series, Mate. If only I had a back yard range for this kind of activity. Don't stop. And yes, check your bullet weights as stated earlier by dotman 133 as well as lose the attached radar or at least mount it detached from the barrel. But hey, it's your show!
I am currently load developing with N135 for my 22-250. 53gr Hornady v-max with hornady factory brass. The four narrowed down charges have all given me sub 0.5 moa at 100m with the best 0.324 moa. It is all looking extremely promising so far.
I might be old school but I believe that shot harmonics from the bipod was showing in the scope camera. I would tighten up every thing and use sand bags. See if it doesn’t stop the weird strings. Thanks for your videos and stay safe.
I've been wanting to see you try the heavier match bullets. I found a thread (6.5 grendel preferred loads) while cruising the interweb. On the 4th page there is a post where someone says to try the 77 SMK with 24gr of Varget or R15 or 23.2gr of XBR 8208 (loads over max, please work up) They state this is a "universal" load that will shoot .5moa or close to it in any rifle. I bought some blemished hornady 75 grainers from midway for cheap. Loaded 4 loads with Varget and 4 with XBR. 5 of the 8 loads were under 1moa my best being XBR at .34moa. Varget did have the better average though. The videos have been great johnny!
Great Video! I prefer the 25.5 grain N135 and the 1036 52 grain Speer Bullet, IMI Case and Federal Primer! With my 26 inch Criterion barrel! For 100 meters I have Groups under half an inch!
As far as your funnel problem can be fixed if you will put the case your filling in a totally separate load tray. Then when finished move it back to your full tray and pull the next empty case. That's what I do and it works for me.
I have actually had some pretty consistent good groups (0.50" - 0.75") with Bobs' 223 bullets, Hodgdon H4895 and Winchester WSR primers. Using AR-Stoner 223 Wylde Medium Contour 1:8 18" Fluted stainless steel barrel. Since you are using an auto charger, have you considered seating the bullet after putting powder in each case? While you are seating the bullet, the auto charger can be working on the next charge. Never have to worry about spilling powder with that method.
JRB, loved this Viht video, I still believe that the suppressor and Magnetospeed are not helping for accuracy during the tests! I would love to see the exact same test, without either of them attached to the gun. I also feel that the .5gr increments are hurting for trying to find the accuracy tune on that barrel.
Another great video John... Although It puzzles me why you measure your rounds from base to tip, when the most accurate way of measuring the consistency of the rounds length is with a comparator. Measuring base to the Ogive. No intention to insult you or teach you to suck eggs. It's just that base to tip is not consistent enough when you're doing load development for the best groups. My best small game round is a 55 grain V-Max, PPU brass, (Or any other brass) Fed Gold Primers, 25.1 grains of Viht N135. I get 1/4" at 100 yards on a good day, 1/2" on an average day. Keep up the good work, much appreciated.
I’m newerish at reloading for 556/223 and one of my range days I shot better groups with the cheap Hornady fmj’s than I did with the loads that I did with 69 SMK’s. I’m using cfe223 for now till I find something else I could use. It could have been my shooting too, I was super uncomfortable shooting off the ground in the desert. Who knows, I guess I’ll have to shoot some more and see. I also made the mistake of buying these massive 80 grain bullets that I’m not sure what to do with.
Good vids though.. and yes TAC is awesome.. I have gotten SUB moa with 55grn Wolf FMJ's ($0/08 each) and very close to same POI as Federal 69 grn Matchking factory... which drives Tacks in my M400..
I think it would be worth your time to explore some loads around the 23.5 range, up or down to the 23.0-24.0 mark by .1 or .2 grains depending on how through you want to be, and you might find a really nice load for those. I think I would even take it up to 24.5 as that group had a weird flier. Speaking of that weird flier, I noticed just about every one of these groups with the Bob's Bullets you've done recently had one or two bullets a good MOA off the rest of the group. Have you weighed a sampling of the bullets for weight consistency? I'm guessing you aren't seeing anything as you load them different, but they could be off a few grains or maybe have a hollow cavity in the lead that could slightly alter how they fly. Might be something like getting Sierra seconds, I weigh them and try to sort by .2 of a grain before loading to help keep them consistent, and they shoot great that way. Just loading them randomly and they get a little wonky as you get the occasional .5 or more weight difference since the seconds are from when their tooling is cold and might not be as consistently shaped or weighted until they start the primary run...
....reloading .223 Sierra 55 BKs, 65 GKs and 69 SMKs with N133 in a 1:9 bolt rifle and my accurate loads are much lower than tested here; 22.9grn, 22.8grn and 21.9grn, respectively for MV of around 2800 to 2850 which seems to be an accuracy node for the 22" barrel....I tried over 23.5grn but these were consistently the best...
Some rainy day you could do a blooper reel. It's funny because we all have done some accidents along the way, if you haven't then you're lying to yourself haha
If you are looking to streamline your reloading process a bit, you could use two pans. One on the Lyman and one on the Gempro. The lyman would weigh a charge. You dump that into the second pan on the Gempro and put the pan back on the lyman. The Lyman can then run the next load while you are trickling by hand. I completely understand if you want to do it the way you are, as there are many reasons to do it this way... But if you want to save some time you can use for editing or something, its an idea.
August is almost over JRB! I don't know what I'm going to do with myself when there isn't a new video every day. It'll probably be a nice break for you though lol. Do you have an idea of how often you will upload after this?
Seems no reason why those numbers should not be way below .74. How good are Bob's bullets? I recall the AR Platform, being more accurate. As usual...Great Videos! Thank You, Johnny!
Johnny just trying N133 with 55gr nosler fbbt's in my cz 527 ebony 9"twist 24.2gr n133 in hornady brass Remington 205 primer with a AOL of 2.260 five shot group at 100yds .402in .shot five groups of five none were over 1in
Thanks you for the great content.. I am looking for a bullet and powder combo. Prefer vihtavuori powders I shoot 3 gun looking for a good 55 for close paper and a 62 plus for longer range. Any input would be greatly appreciated JP Rifles Scr-11 Proof research 1-8 twist 16 inch Jp Titanium muzzle break
So i am a beginner and i just picked up 100 cci small rifle primers some 55 grain hornady hollow point bullets and some vori n120 powder will this powder work for .223 reloads
While Bob's bullets have performed excellent for what they are, I doubt you'll see stellar results cause of that funky ring around the tip thing they got going on. maybe if you wait for the planets to line up and sacrifice a few chickens........ hang them off the Magnetospeed to help with the harmonics while shooting your 8 cent bullets.
I don't get it Brother, when you first started out with Bobs' bullets they were pride of the trailer court ! Hit a Loan Star Beer can at 1.000 yards. Huh?
6:12 after doing that a couple of times and wanting to tear my bench off the wall, I have c-clamped my tray to the bench ever since and have not had such an incident happen again.
Primers, Crimp, Brass on that Game King Load?... BTW TAC is supposedly the least temp sensitive ball ammo around...rummored to be used by our troops in Afghanistan because of that..But you know the internets
Not trying to be critical but watching the scope footage it appears your elevation hold is good but you seem to have about a half moa sway on the windage. Doesn't look regular enough to be pulse only. You might want to consider a different kind of rear bag or investing in a lead sled DFT. It also did not appear that you were consistent with your break on the horizontal swing. That will tend to make your groups string horizontally, which tends to show in your targets. Just an observation and a suggestion. Really enjoy your work and your videos. Keep it up!
You take that chrono off I'll bet you get better groups. Just get a LabRadar and you will have something you can run velocity with and not change the harmonics of your barrel. Also I noticed on your scope cam your not breaking all your shots in the same place adding to your grouping problems.
Love watching your videos! Can't help to ask you a question... Which software did you use to edit your videos? Awesome! Many thanks for sharing with us!
you have tested primers, Powder, and bullets now about the best of all the SD's. Fed AR Match Primers. VV Powders and your 69SMK's. Suggestions weigh out the bullets to get same weights for each 5 your shooting, and use a lead sled, and nothing on the barrel (no can or Magneto speed) naked barrel and traditional crono. weighing out each charge to .01 gr is great but if your bullets weights are off by .2 or .4 gr it may all be for not. Keep the videos coming, any news on the 22 nosler barrel?
why don't you try doing a different method for finding a node vs the 5 shot groups. The .5 grain increments are too big and you are probably missing the nodes.
These tests are exploratory and shouldn't really be considered as a search for the perfect accuracy node. I am trying to cover a lot of ground to see what sort of velocities and groups we get across the normal range for the bullet. Once I've done that, then I like to go back and either go higher or explore a particular range in smaller increments. So, this video is really only step 1 on the path to finding the right load.
Is it possible that you're looking for something you're not going to get with a 55-grain bullet and the 1:7 barrel? I'd think that barrel would be better-suited to 69-80 grain bullets, fired at less than 2900 fps? I'm not looking at any references here, just speaking from a number of years of experience. Those light bullets, fired at 2900-3000 fps from that twist rate are spinning really, really fast, maybe too fast for best accuracy. Maybe not, just sayin'.
Tom Herbert Hello Tom, I can't speak for JRB but I believe his barrel is 1/8 twist and he has already shot some impressive groups with lighter bullets such as 55 grain blitz kings as well as the 55 grain Bobs using Varget in the first video.
For the record, i dont know how accurate this page is. but i have seen simular statements over the years. Looks like a 1:7 will stabilize just about any weight bullet a AR typically sees. With the downside beeing drag and wear i suppose. info.stagarms.com/blog/bid/371861/How-Barrel-Twist-Rate-Affects-Ammunition-Choice
I have read articles over the years that have stated that bullets with very thin jackets could actually fly apart in flight if spun too fast. I think they were speaking specifically of varmint bullets, which is why the 22 caliber cartridges designed to send light bullets downrange at high velocities, like the 220 Swift and the 22-250, have slower twists. The Ruger #1 in 220 Swift that I had was a 1:12.
First of all, those bullets suck. Second, the magnetospeed is ONLY good for establishing a load with low SDs. It affects barrel harmonics and your groups will always change when you remove it. You should take the groups without SD and with the chrono removed play with the seating depth. Regardless, you need good bullets and brass or it is all just trigger time.
Those Bob's bullets look like pure shit in a couple of the videos I've seen you shoot them in... I think I'll stick with the reliable nosler 40 grain BT and N-133 myself.. Enjoy your videos though Johnny, keep it up..

Keep on going! Loving it!
Great video Johnny I love the 223 videos they never get old, but I did love the 9mm video too
Keep the great videos coming Johnny 👍

I love this powder works great for my 308 with the 178’s as well. That barrel looks a little skinny. Might be part of the accuracy issue
Time for a "Shooter's Coffee Chat", which for you could easily be a "Shooter's Monster Chat"
Great Vids & Unicorns Well Come !
Try some H4895, I use it in my 1-8 twist .223 bolt gun & it shoots 55 vmax & 64 gr Berger varmint bullets great. 25 gr is my best load.
I am excited to try vihtavuori powder in my Mossberg mvp predator rifle with a 24 inch barrel
Good
vids though.. and yes TAC is awesome..
Interesting that for the velocity spread, not much shift in poi.
Haters gonna hate, I'd pick Bob's over expensive junk anyday
....reloading .223 Sierra 55 BKs, 65 GKs and 69 SMKs with N133 in a 1:9 bolt rifle and my accurate loads are much lower than tested here; 22.9grn, 22.8grn and 21.9grn, respectively for MV of around 2800 to 2850 which seems to be an accuracy node for the 22" barrel....I tried over 23.5grn but these were consistently the best...
I liked the Lyman video
Using a Led Sled would help eliminate the potential oops shot.
77 grain sierra about 24.5 grains of rl 15, lc case, wsr primer.
Btw, this load is warm in my 20in barrel/rifle.
Wish u would do some gel tests
good powder only gets you so far :)
Try some VV with SMKs or Noslers :)
August is almost over JRB! I don't know what I'm going to do with myself when there isn't a new video every day. It'll probably be a nice break for you though lol.
Do you have an idea of how often you will upload after this?
Yeah, I can't believe he's been making all these awesome videos every day. Great work! And to the one down voter on this video, kiss my ass. ;-)
Interested to see what imr4198 would do, heard some positive results with that and 55gr fmjs
That was you or the bullets. 24.5 with 133n is a go-to killer load.
Prefer vihtavuori powders
I shoot 3 gun looking for a good 55 for close paper and a 62 plus for longer range.
Any input would be greatly appreciated
JP Rifles Scr-11
Proof research 1-8 twist 16 inch
Jp Titanium muzzle break
So i am a beginner and i just picked up 100 cci small rifle primers some 55 grain hornady hollow point bullets and some vori n120 powder will this powder work for .223 reloads
While Bob's bullets have performed excellent for what they are, I doubt you'll see stellar results cause of that funky ring around the tip thing they got going on. maybe if you wait for the planets to line up and sacrifice a few chickens........ hang them off the Magnetospeed to help with the harmonics while shooting your 8 cent bullets.
When I look at your scope cam, it seems that the gun barrel movement follows the hit point. Be careful with equal shoulder contact and body position.
did you get elvis ammo to send you some of those 75 gn. pills ?
I don't get it Brother, when you first started out with Bobs' bullets they were pride of the trailer court ! Hit a Loan Star Beer can at 1.000 yards. Huh?
Will the n133 be good in a short barrel 308 with 150gr bullets?
What's your best combo with bobs bullets so far?
6:12 after doing that a couple of times and wanting to tear my bench off the wall, I have c-clamped my tray to the bench ever since and have not had such an incident happen again.
Have you played around with Noslers 55gr or 77gr?
Do you make your own target sheets?
Did you ever did primer seating depth tests ?
useing campro 55s here in canada made in canada 4064 23g s&b prime l.c. brass17
If you have a 5.56 chamber work up to 28gr with caution.
Is this a good powder for a 14.5 inch barrel and 55 grain bullet?
How clean burning is this power?
Have you considered smaller increments... like 0.3 grns?
Is it possible to load 30-06 with this powder
Primers, Crimp, Brass on that Game King Load?... BTW TAC is supposedly the least temp sensitive ball ammo around...rummored to be used by our troops in Afghanistan because of that..But you know the internets
Please test xtreme bullets 55gr FMJBT
Not trying to be critical but watching the scope footage it appears your elevation hold is good but you seem to have about a half moa sway on the windage. Doesn't look regular enough to be pulse only. You might want to consider a different kind of rear bag or investing in a lead sled DFT. It also did not appear that you were consistent with your break on the horizontal swing. That will tend to make your groups string horizontally, which tends to show in your targets. Just an observation and a suggestion. Really enjoy your work and your videos. Keep it up!
TheKajunkat agree. I think Johnny should try a Led Sled.
HCNFAN also a new gun.😏😉
What's a good accurate factory do it all round? Plinker, prepper, target at good velocities n an affordable price
M Blake Jr Federal gold medal match
You take that chrono off I'll bet you get better groups. Just get a LabRadar and you will have something you can run velocity with and not change the harmonics of your barrel. Also I noticed on your scope cam your not breaking all your shots in the same place adding to your grouping problems.
I couldn't agree more. There's a reason all of the F class guys run LabRadar...
Aaron Anderson f class guy right here
Wrong powder. 55gn want N130.
N133 is perfect for 69gn SMK bullets in a bolt action 223
Taking off suppressor may help
Shooting from an auto loader with no crimp?
maybe you need to take off and go fishing. I like the .223 though.
Tom Herbert
Hello Tom, I can't speak for JRB but I believe his barrel is 1/8 twist and he has already shot some impressive groups with lighter bullets such as 55 grain blitz kings as well as the 55 grain Bobs using Varget in the first video.
You're correct, I should have paid better attention.
The Ruger #1 in 220 Swift that I had was a 1:12.
on the other hand, what all the years of shooting have learned me. Is that you never know what a individual barrel really loves untill you try it.
Honestly, the scope cam is annoying and doesn't bring anything to the video...sell it ;) Otherwise it's an enjoyable vid as usual :)
