    When you find that perfect grain sack, or hand stitched vintage linen at an antique shop, you may want to make a pillow cover for it. After that, what will you stuff it with? You could search Amazon to see if they have an insert in the exact dimensions you need, or you could just make your own!
    I actually like this option even better because I like the way a handmade pillow looks peeking out of the pillow cover.
    Drop cloth is my material of choice. Sometimes I make it a fresh white by bleaching it, and sometimes I leave it the natural color.
    It has an almost linen look to it that I love!
    It is easy to make your own pillow insert.
    First, measure the size of your finished pillow cover.
    Next, add one inch to the width and one inch to the length. This will allow for a 1/2" seam allowance on all four sides when you go to sew your front and back pieces together.
    If you want the pillow insert to be slightly longer so that it peeks out the other side, as shown in the IKEA tea towel pillow cover tutorial, you can add an extra 1/2" to 1" to the length measurement.
    Simply cut out two pieces of fabric in the dimensions you came up with. (Length and width of the pillow cover plus one inch on the length and width.)
    In this video I was making a pillow insert for a 26.5" by 14.5" vintage concrete sack. I cut my bleached drop cloth pieces to 28" by 15.5" to allow for a peek-a-boo pillow insert.
    Sew the two pieces together with a 1/2" seam all the way around, except one 3" spot. This will be where you add the stuffing. I like to leave the spot on one of the short ends. If you put it on a corner, it will be harder to close up and cold look messy.
    Turn it right out, making sure to poke out all the corners with your fingers.
    Add stuffing until it is full enough for your liking.
    Add a little topstitch to close up the 3" spot that you left open.
    Instructions for the IKEA tea towel pillow size:
    Sew up two 13 by 20 inch pieces of bleached drop cloth, or other white cotton fabric, all the way around, leaving a 3 inch portion not sewn.
    Turn it right side out and add stuffing.
    Stitch the 3″ spot that you left open shut with a topstitch.
    WHAT IS A TOPSTITCH?
    A topstitch is a stitch that is sewn close to the original seam. It is on top of the garment, or project, and visible when it is complete. Its purpose is to make a seam lay flat. In this case the purpose is to close up the hole that was left open for the stuffing.
    When putting your insert into your new pillow cover, hide the 3″ spot you left open, since it will look a little messy, by putting that end first into your pillow cover. The nicely sewn edge should be the one peeking out.
    Thank you so much for stopping by the farmhouse!

    You amaze me at everything u do. U remind me of my grandma and momma making things like that. And that is a compliment. My grandma lived to be 105 . She lived in 3 centuries. Born in 1895, lived all 1900s and died in2000. My momma is 83 now and still going strong. She can sew anything. She use to make our school clothes. I love watching your tutorials. I’m learning about essential oils. I have 2 diffusers now. Got one for Christmas. I really want to learn about the oils. So interesting and I need them. Thank you for ur videos. I watch and rewatch them.!

  • @charlotteprescott-ruland9121

    Oh my goodness...it took me a second to realize you had a baby in there and not just one super large boob. lol That wrap seems to work really well! I tried the Moby with my last two babies and they wouldn't have it. I think if I had been able to wrap them the way you have your baby, they would have taken to it. So, I was always stuck sitting around with a baby hanging off my boob till daddy got home. ;)
    Love your videos!! We bought a "farm house" on 5 acres, and I'm trying to make my home look like yours. So far...it's not working, much like the Moby wrap. ha! I think I have too many different styles going on (steam punk, rustic, cottage, shabby...I just love too many styles, I suppose. lol). Can't wait to learn from your videos how to do it right! Thank you!!

    • @charlotteprescott-ruland9121
      @charlotteprescott-ruland9121 Před 6 lety

      Awesome! I will definitely start calling my "motif" the "eclectic farmhouse!!" lol I'm a mess and driving my poor hubby nuts. I purchased six woven banana leaf chairs that I just had to have. Now that I'm done with the build and stain finish of my farm table we built, I wanted to lighten up the chairs. I started to paint them, which made my hubby grimace super hard...haha...then decided I really liked using the painter's canvas and would just make slip covers with that. Of course I can never keep things simple, so I decided to use piping and buttons on the back of the covers. It took me hours to make just one half of one...and it's not perfect'ish, so I'm doing it over. That's how I found your videos ;)
      And yes, I'm certain I can't be the only one who thought you had one super large boob...at least I hope not. lol

    So funny that I chose this video. I already know how to do this but needed to check on how to measure for a good fit. Then I saw that you used the "snow" I was in JoAnn fabrics about a week ago and the big bag was on clearance. Of course I didn't buy it thinking it was different...lol.. Now I know. For some reason I thought it was the blanket type. But, it was the exact bag that you show here.

    Props for all your great ideas and having patience to do this. I just restuffed my couch pillows, the material is a tapestry native American style. No zipper on them. I popped the stitches on the one side. They were just stuffed with no liner. I threw all that away and by hand washed the covers and let air dry., had to do a little repair on the covers. I used inserts I will never use again, they seem like paper material, my finger went right threw one of them, had to stitch it up and also add more stuffing in one because it was flatter then the other one. This was the first time restuffing a pillow. Things I learned. Use a cotton liner or just put the stuffing in the pillow. Store bought liners may not fit exactly in the corners of your pillow cover. If I did this again i would put stuffing in the corners before putting the insert. Over all my pillows look way better and they're clean. Pillows corners aren't floppy, but could be beter. I dont have patience to make my own inserts. LOL

    Thank you so much for sharing your drop cloth ideas. I'd love to make a baby blanket with drop cloth. But on my second though, is bleach safe for the babies? what is your thought?

    • @FarmhouseonBoone
      @FarmhouseonBoone  Před 6 lety

      Hey Bianca! I have thought and thought about making a drop cloth blanket and just decided it would probably be a little too thick. Also, I think the bleach probably wouldn't be good for a baby blanket. I have the muslin fabric upstairs ready to do the tutorial and still haven't gotten to it. Hopefully soon! The finished dimensions of the muslin swaddle blankets I have made are 41" by 46".
