I watched Secretariat win the Triple Crown with my Mom…we laughed and cheered and cried. She’s been gone 39 years now, but I’ll always remember that day.
@@marymcfadden636 For me, I think I cry because Its the only time that I have witnessed perfection and saw a creature who was literally blessed by the hand of God.

The people at Belmont put a pole 31 lengths from the finish and painted it in blue-and-white checkers. A nice tribute to the greatest racehorse of them all.
What a great tribute to the greatest..... A pole 31 lengths from the finish. I remember his workouts that tied or beat the track record of the track he worked out on.
If I could go back in time and witness just one sporting event in all of history I would go back to Belmont Park on June 9, 1973, to watch Secretariat put on the greatest single performance in thoroughbred racing history.
+9Ballr I was there and remember it well even now. I remember the Sham fans cheering loudly when he led into the clubhouse turn. I also remember Turcotte looking into the infield as he neared the 1/8th pole. He knew that he had a chance at the world's record and he "rode him out" continuing to keep an eye at the clock all the way to the wire. Meanwhile the crowd was going totally wild.
I would want to go to all three! There is nothing like watching him come from behind and pass the others like they are standing still, but the anxiety he instills when he breaks for the front in the Belmont is exasperating!
Secretariat in the Belmont Stakes in 1973 was the single most unmatched display of athletic domination and greatness by any living thing on this planet, in any sport or competition, in any arena, at any time, ever...
I do get how you come up with 4 quarters of 1.5 miles is 3/8 mile for each "quarter" but I don't know how you get the times for those "quarters". The Belmont 1/4 mile times were :23-3/5, :22-3/5, :23-3/5, :24-2/5, :24-4/5, :25 flat), Secretariat did run each 1/4 mile of the Derby faster than each previous (25-1/5, 24, 23-4/5, 23-2/5, 23). He also beat his own time for the Derby (1:59-2/5) at the 1.25 mile mark during the Belmont which was 1:59 flat.
So well said Secretariat run at the 1973 Belmont has to be the most beautiful thing ever seen in sports because of the domination. Like Chick Anderson said on the call a tremendous machine. What a Athlete! What a Horse!
I've been a veterinarian now for the last 33 years and I owe my drive to become a veterinarian now because of watching Secretariat way back in 1973...Long live the king...The most majestic horse I've ever seen...
I worked at a drugstore and got out in time to go to an appliance store next door. They had a tv going and I and several other customers stood watching and that’s where I saw a miracle happen in 🏇 horse racing. I don’t think we’ll ever see a horse like him ever again.
I was a little girl at the time, who had a dad who loved horse racing. I remember him cheering so loudly for this horse, yelling at the TV, every race he ran. My dad loved this horse. Bet on him to win every chance he got. I miss my dad, he passed away in 2016.
I was young when he ran and now am old. That's how time goes. I will never see another horse like Secretariat. You watch his feet run and he was just so much faster than any other horse. He was the People's Horse and always will be. Let Him Run, Ronnie! (Penny Tweedy)
I was 10 years old when Secretariat won the Triple Crown and my dad, like yours, was crazy about Secretariat! Lol. He bought a retired race horse that year - he was a red chestnut, and yes, his name was Red. My dads been gone since 2008. When the Movie came out in 2010, all those beautiful memories came in like a flood❤️.
@@floatsting20 Thank you for serving this Country and keeping us safe, I believe God will share (His Horse) Secretariat with us once again & this time for longer than 19 years 🙏 ✝️🙏
The greatest horse to ever race. His moment at Belmont in 1973 still brings tears to my eyes. My mind. A "TREMENDOUS MACHINE". What a perfect description.
Omg!! I know!! I can't tell you how Amazing this horse was!! I still cry w/ tears of joy !! Everytime I watch this Great ESPN Documentary..... It was sooooo well done!! He was our ( " People's Horse!!!!)....Secretariat live on!!
Proud to say I was there in the grandstand just before the finish line. We were all shaking with joy and hugging strangers. Never felt anything like it since.
THE GOAT. I was a senior in high school, growing up in KY. I’ll never forget him, and I still get choked up every time I watch him run. And I never get tired of watching his races.
I grew up with horses so I know how special they can be to people. When I was a freshman @ UK, we piled in the car and went to Calumet Farm to see him. Randomly. But I we surely all knew how special he was and that he might not be with us much longer. Unspoken of course. We walked up to the fence, he was distant. But he saw us and took off running in a dead sprint (40mph) right for us, still powerful as ever. Put on his brakes near the fence. Stood there like he knew how special he was. He let us all love on him, he was so sweet. I wish I'd have taken photos. I'll never forget that moment. He was put down due to laminitus about a year later. Few got to see him in his element like I did. He may have been even more spectacular there than he was on the track. We all got together, that day, & wept. I miss him.
It is the most recognized photo for sure! Just like the call... Secretariat is widening now, he’s moving like a tremendous machine, Secretariat by 12, Secretariat by 14 lengths on the turn, gives ya goosebumps!!!
Mr. Turcotte didn't just ride Secretariat. He FLEW him to victory in the Belmont Stakes. Secretariat just kicked in the afterburners and blew out the rest of the field.
I used to go to the track often. A horse winning by 10 lengths…awesome. Maybe I’ve seen 10 twice in my life. 15 lengths never… 20 impossible…31…only Secretariat…
The black and white image taken by Bob Coglianese for NYRA is one of the greatest photographs of the 20th century. If a picture was worth a million words, this picture was it. It remains the most famous photo of many famous photos of Secretariat.
Secretariat was at the zenith of his life. He ran on an absolute perfect day. He did what no other horse has or will ever do again! Still gives me chills.
Everyone is yammering (in the vid) about people crying at the race, hell, it's 2022, and just watching this video gets me all teared up. Horses are magnificent animals. And a horse that makes the rest of them look just pedestrian is just amazing. That was phenomenal. I wish I had seen him live.
I did not get to see him in person but I did get to see live on TV all three triple crown races he won. I was 12 years old, crazy about horses and taking riding lessons. I did realize history was being made and Secretariat was a phenomenal horse, but I don't think I realized he was so phenomenal that his records would still hold 50 years later.
FYI speaking of emotion, I remember jumping and screaming as he pulled away so many lengths in the Belmont. It was just so him. (Ok I have to admit I am generally a sports nut anyway and tend to scream for competition.) Ah, Secretartiat. What a horse.
This horse is getting me through a very tough time, IN 2022!!! Whenever I feel scared/low/weary in my spirit, I come back to all videos Secretariat!!! I've never loved an animal this much.
What a magnificent creature brought to us by God….I’m lucky enough to have lived through his races and see that remarkable horse run for his life!!!! My Dad was home that day from work… we witnessed it together with Mother cooking. ❤️❤️❤️
Some years ago a bunch of sports reporters and writers got together and compiled a list of the 100 greatest athletes of all time. The list ended up with 99 humans on it and 1 horse, Big Red/Secretariat.
ESPN had him ranked as the 13th greatest athlete of the 20th Century. His feat in the Belmont ranks as one of the greatest performances of any athlete, yes athlete, ever. He is in the same conversation with Muhammed Ali, Babe Ruth, and Michael Jordan as the greatest of all time.
Yes and people can say you can't say that this horse is an athlete's yes you can because he is competing in a sport. He is one of the greatest four-legged athletes on the face of the Earth truly a gift from God. And he compares to some of the greatest two-legged athletes such as Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan Etc
That performance at the Belmont was the greatest event in sports history. But Secretariat is all alone, he's moving like a tremendous machine. Even the call was historic. The photo won a Pulitzer Prize! It was like something biblical!
This and Zenyatta’s Breeders cup win are My favorite races to watch over and over and they still give me a huge smile each and every time. This........is.....un.....bee......leev......a......bul.........,one we’ll never forget. Great call Trever!!!
For Secretarirat's Last Race, Eddie Maple is so human, hilarious and humble at the same time when he says, "....if some thing happens and he doesn't win, why they'll just tar and feather me right there."
Anyone who’s ever followed horse racing even just a little has heard he’s moving like a tremendous machine knows exactly where that phrase comes from, the most well known phrase in horse racing, just like the photo of Ronnie Turcot looking back over his shoulder to see where the other horses were cause he couldn’t hear them, the most well known photo ever in Horse racing
A shit your pants, I can't believe this moment, just like Man o war winning by 100 lengths. Big Reds rule!👍Big reds, gotta luv em. A chestnuts coat is gold .
"He is moving like a tremendous machine!" The only words that could have been coupled with a moment in history as amazing & triumphant as Secretariat's race - it was his race & for many of us who understand or inexplicably feel such great emotion towards that wonderful horse, it will always be his race. Secretariat, may you rest in peace & forever in our hearts.
He was such a wonderful horse. I've had horses all my life and truly Secretariat was the king. Rest in peace enjoy that big Meadow in the sky big red you deserve it
One comment in this documentary that has always stayed with me is the story of Secretariat watching an airplane. I think this helps to show how different he was from other horses, and how conscious of the world around him. Secretariat's win in the Belmont was so amazing, and not least because Ronnie Turcot just let him run as fast as he wanted, and he was running for pure joy.
Two years after Secretariat’s historic run, I was privileged to visit Claiborne Farms and spent an hour or so with this special horse. He spent his time with my family eating carrots, letting us pet him, and rolling in the grass. The big takeaway from our visit was that ‘this horse KNOWS that he is the best, and will ALWAYS be the best’. He knew that there would be no horse better than he. And he was…..
My Grandmother was at the Belmont that day. She was a teenager, pregnant, and scared. She thought about suicide a lot. She prayed for any sign to show it would get better. She got to see Big Red up close that morning. She seriously asked him "what would he do" In that brief moment she felt connected to the horse that was about to shock the world. It was like he knew and felt her pain. She never thought about suicide again and she became the strongest woman I have ever known. She still swears Big Red saved her life that day. From every video and picture I have seen of him he knew exactly what was going on. It was like he was toying till the title was on the line. Like any great athlete he turned it on when it mattered the most.
I similarly, watched Secretariat run the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico on that beautiful day of 19- May -1973. My uncle took me and I've loved going to the track ever since. ☘
Your grandmother had a spiritual awakening and Secretariat was a sign from God. That is when you know when a horse is very very special. Something like that happened to me with Barbaro.
As Secretariat was coming down the homestretch in the Belmont… Blowing the field away by 31 lengths, I cried… I was 11 years old. I knew even then that this was a performance that would never be duplicated… So far, I’ve been right. That was 45 years ago.
One more comment. An average horse has a heart weighing around 4 lbs. Race horses may have a heart weighing 6 lbs. Secretariats heart weighed 9 lbs. A big, big engine!!
He was a STRONG Horse, in the Pimlico Secretariat kinda tucked his bottom under like a dog does when using his hind end, Pure Power with the physical built of this Horse 🙏✝️🙏 Incredible!!! Poor Sham he got whipped so much😢 he was a Great Horse too🙏✝️🙏
Couldn't agree more!, I watched him run on my television and couldn't stop screaming!! To this day, the only thing that came close was the Cub's world series victory in game 7!!, but it still cant compare!!!!🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🇺🇲
There was an interview with Ron Turcotte where he said of the Belmont Stakes that Secretariat was running so smoothly that he had no idea how fast he was going until he turned around and saw how far ahead of everyone else he was. He then glanced at the timer and his jaw dropped. It's September 2021 and his record of 2:24 flat still stands.
@@johnhunter2294 I don’t wanna spoilt any parties but are people 100% sure that horse was juiced, just hear me out…he was so far better then the other horses, the records before that never had a horse win by 31 and still hasn’t been done , is it completely impossible or is this a once in a lifetime horse cuz that shitss not happnening again
@@MoejiiOsmanTV No, he wasn't juiced. His heart was about three times the size of the normal thoroughbred's heart; that was why he never seemed to tire. If you want to accuse a horse of juicing, look at Prove Out. He was off the board in more than half of his career races, and yet ran the second-fastest 12F of all time. He never came close to that level of performance before or after that one race. Just sayin'.
How you view perfection and not be moved to tears? I’ve watched the film of the Belmont more times than I can count and every single time there are many tears flowing.
The beauty is Secretariat knew what he was doing and he knew how to run his race. He had a tremendous burst of speed on the 1st turn at the Preakness, then he runs stride for stride with the speed horse in the Belmont, then blows him away, now the kicker is the horses laying in wait to catch him on the final turn, were NO WHERE IN SIGHT! Unimaginable Performance!
It's astonishing that Secretariat still has a hold on a lot of people almost 50 years after his triple crown win. I remember his races as a kid growing up in KC watched the Belmont Stakes with my parents along with most of America. Thank you Secretariat.
I weep also!! When you see what GOD HIMSELF PUT TOGETHER, BECAUSE OF THE POWER, GRACE AND ABSOLUTE BEAUTY - HIS KIND MAY NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN!! “UNTIL GOD HIMSELF DECIDES TO”.
And come to find out Fliteline is the Great, great, great grandson of Secretariat. Before I knew this a few days ago, I watched Fliteline on the back stretch of the Santa Anita race, I believe. First time I was suddenly sitting upright watching and commented to my family watch that he just took off just like Secretariat. I watched two more times and yup, that back stretch take off was amazing. Then to find out he is related, WOW.!!!
As a Virginian, I'm proud to say that both Secretariat and Riva Ridge were born and raised at Meadow Farm in Doswell, Virginia @ 20 miles north of my home near Richmond. Have been there many times. There has never been, nor will there ever be, a thoroughbred as great as Big Red.
I was 21 at the time and traveled to all three Triple Crown venues to see Secretariat run. I'm now in my mid 60's and when I'm around others, mostly younger, at Derby, Preakness or Belmont parties and asked who I believed was the best ever I always respond "I lived during the time of Secretariat".
tosius2 That is Worthy of telling Your Grandchildren!!! WOW The Questions I'd have for You if I ever met you!!! that had to be the greatest most memorable experience of your life beside your family. I've never even so much as heard of anyone who can honestly say that other than the media, journalist, and people who were paid to be there. Yours is probably one of the most unique experiences I've ever read on the net!!! Congratulations I think it makes YOU a CHAMP!!! Thank you for sharing such a unique experience!!! I was 11 Yeats Old and I remember People Crying. I thought the horse died or something tragic happened I was just a kid I didn't understand. Again, thank you for sharing that because I have never heard of such. WOW!!!
ACCCCKKKKK! I am so jealous. I was 15 years old and horse crazy (still am) when Secretariat did his thing and I wanted to be there sooooooooooo bad! I have watched his races over and over and still tear up every time. I have read everything about him I can get my hands on and have watched everything I can watch regarding Big Red! What a fantastic story you have to tell. I too, would have lots of questions for you!
His head barely moved off the same horizontal plane while running at full stride. You will not see that in any other horse while running!!! PURE SPEED and KNEW he would be out front!!!
My grandparents lived on land owned by the man responsible for reconditioning the starting gates. I remember one set of gates that had been brought in for repairs and all these men were crowded around it. I asked my grandpa what was going on and he pointed at one of the stalls and said it was the Belmont gate and that particular stall was where Secretariat was. I won't ever forget that.
Remember kid, there's heroes and there's legends(Secretariat). Heroes get remembered but legends(Secretariat) never die, follow your heart kid, and you'll never go wrong.
Secretariat came to us when we needed him the most. We were stuck in the Vietnam war and Nixon Watergate. He was, "More Than Just a Horse." He gave us unseen emotional abilities.
Secretariat's Belmont Stakes performance is the singular greatest sporting event in my lifetime. People wept in the presence of this horse; he was that special, almost as if touched by the Lord himself. RIP "Big Red".
So true! Truly magical and extraordinarily surreal experience!!! Absolutemy mesmerizing! ❤️👏 That scene in the film where Secretariat looks the jockey straight in the eye was magical and aewsome! I was heartbroken when he passed.
For most people there are just a handful of happenings that you can take with you and realize you witnessed something special to cherish for the rest of your life. This stands out as the greatest single athletic, yet athletic, performance I have ever witnessed. Three great quotes:"We'll never see this again." Bill Nack , "They're treating him like just another horse" woman overheard by Dave Anderson during saliva test, " Jack don't you understand? All of your life, in your game, you've been striving for perfection. At the end of the Belmont you saw it." Haywood Hale Broun speaking to golfing great Jack Nicklaus after seeing Secretariat win.
I was 28 years old that spring day in 1972, and I had followed the life of this amazing horse for every race he ran.. On the day of The Belmont, at post time, I went outside and grabbed my youngest brother, who was 9 at that time. He said,"Whaddaya want?" I said, "You're gonna watch this race." "Why??" "Because you're gonna see history being made." Ever so often when The Belmont comes up, my young brother would thank me for making him watch this truly historical race and this wonderfully magnificent horse.
One of my biggest regrets- in late 70s /early 80s , my dad and I were driving back from Florida . We passed the billboard that said "See the great Secretariat ! Turn here to see Big Red... ! My Dad (who never stopped anywhere) asked "Do you want to stop,,? " I said No..... I still regret that all these years later .....
I happened upon this video, its 5 a.m and I couldn't stop watching...Secretariat was the most beautiful, angelic powerhouse of a horse, that I had ever seen...this video brought me to tears....the way he trotted out, that head thrown back, shimmering bronze in the sun, he knew he was the best in the world!
***Secretariat is going for the lead and it's right now he's looking for it." ***"I looked at the teletimer and saw that the horse had gone three quarters of a mile in 1:09, which is the fastest a horse has ever gone three quarters of a mile in the Belmont Stakes - and he's leaving Sham at this point." ***"He's running and running and running and I turned to the guy next to me and I said, he's lost the horse." ***"Secretariat is widening now. He is moving like a tremendous machine." ***"Secretariat is in a position that he's impossible to catch." ***It was like the Lord was holding the reigns and Secretariat was one of his creatures and maybe whispered to him- go." "It was like a supernatural experience, it really was." ***"I leapt out of my chair at Belmont Park shouting we'll never see this again." ### The tears start for me with the slow motion up close look at Sham and Secretariat running side by side. I also love the way the American flag is flying while Secretariat increases his lead in the background. Also a shout out to Sham who if not for Secretariat could have been a triple crown champion himself.
My wife (now three years gone from Breast Cancer) and I watched all three of those races (on TV) and we - but mostly my wife were all about Secretariat. If I ever ran into an atheist I would point to that big hearted horse and ask them if he was or anything like him an accident. Of course it was wasted wind. Speaking of wind....that horse had more than any other horse that ever lived. Huge heart, bigger spirit - enormous empathy. My Dear wife cried for a week when he was euthanized. She must have said a hundred times (since she was a Crackerjack Nurse), "Why didn't they give him to me to take care of?" Of course she knew they did the right thing...but she just loved him so. Great documentary.
@yellowdog123456 Every time we get to the part of history where they tell about Secretariat being euthanized for laminitis, I cry and get a little angry. At the time, they did the right thing. They couldn't help him, they just had to watch him in horrendous pain. Give them all their due - those who had to make the decision had to choose between mercy for Secretariat, and the possibility of getting a few more breedings out of him (at huge cost to Secretariat). They chose mercy. Today, they can treat and cure laminitis. THAT is why I get a little angry. IF ONLY we'd known that in time to save the great Secretariat. If only.... the saddest words. I console myself with the rest of his life - they can't take that away from him - ever.
I sure hope she is able to ride him up there!!My older daughter had breast cancer last year.I hope she can stay healthy with the meds she is on.I finally got to see the barn that big red was born in,near where I grew up.I wanted to see his grave in Ky but you must have a reservation ahead of time.At least my hubby and I toured the famous Ky Horse park and saw the grave of Man 'O War.
Secretariat, the greatest horse ever to race, not only won the Triple Crown in 1973, but still holds the current official record for the fastest time in all three Triple Crown races.
I was at the Preakness in 73 in the infield when right before the race many of us went right up to the actual rail and got to see this incredible animal go flying by. I thank God I was able to see such perfection in my life. That Belmont still brings tears to my eyes
I watched him almost 50 years ago, and I still enjoy watching Big Red run...just to drive by Calumet Farms next to Keeneland is still special for me...
I've watched this video more times then I can count and read all the comments over and over and it never ceases to amaze me the joy this horse brought to and still brings to the people in the video and those who just love him because of who he was. I just love the call "he's is moving like a tremendous machine" but the best one for me is " Secretariat has opened a 22 length lead, he is going to be the Triple Crown winner". Just an unbelievable athlete, unmatched by no one.
The line that moved me was "He's out there almost a sixteenth of a mile from the rest of the horses!" Mere lengths didn't do justice to the magnitude of Secretariat's win. There's a pole at Belmont 31 lengths from the wire painted in blue-and-white checkers; a nice little tribute to the greatest horse of them all. And Chic was right; that pole is just inside the last sixteenth pole.
I've watched so many videos of my beautiful, magnificent, tremendous machine, the horse with a very apt natural star on his forehead. I absolutely love reading all the comments. We all idolize him. There's nothing wrong with that. We all need a hero. When a horse can inspire a person to want to be better, as I've seen so many commenters say, including myself, it's the highest compliment. Watching him fly is therapy for the soul. Secretariat.
Having had my own horses at the time, and watching this all on TV, I felt all the things these people talked about, and know they are so right. He looked right at you and you felt him connect to your soul instantly, and you were drawn to him. He had more charisma than any human I ever met, yes, even through TV, which almost makes no sense until you realize he wasn't just a horse. He was from beyond, incarnated, and it was obvious to everyone. All this talk about Secretariat isn't just hyperbole, it was an unprecedented experience that could only be known if you were there at the time.
My dad now deceased was at The Belmont even though we lived in California. He bought 2 $2.00 bets to win with Secretariat. He kept them and made a poster with them framed that sat in his office for decades. He was an amazing horse. I don’t think any horse has beat his track records since.
It’s such a joy listening to Mr Nack talk about Secretariat, you can hear in his voice how much Secretariat meant to him too! both him and Secretariat are dearly missed! But at least we still have these videos
We are blessed to have Secretariat's great grandson and he is just as handome and stylish as his great grandfather too .He had quiet a successful but short career and placed in most of his races but sadly he had to be retired because of repeated nose bleeds . We were so suprised to say the least when we researched his brand and found out who his great grandfather was . These days he is competing in jumping arena with my niece and he is doing very well at it too , we love our big boy and so happy to be able to share our lives with him .
Did a Vet do any checking up on what was causing the Nose Bleeds, such as High Blood Pressure, a Heart Problem, etcetera. Nose Bleeds on a horse has to be quite disturbing to say the very least, and I must honestly say that I have NEVER heard of that happening to a HORSE. You hear about it happening to People, but Not to Horses.
At the Belmont Stakes Secretariat was running against really good competition and Sham was very fast. In fact, Sham could have been competitive against everyone, except Sham had to face the greatest horse of all time.
Perfectly said!! He was the perfection all the great ones to be strive their whole lives for in every sport. Secretariat will always remain the gold standard.
@@msmith5121 This can't be the real Mike Smith. These people commenting have butterflies flying around in their heads. One race means nothing and Secretariat was used in the Kentucky Derby and The Preakness. He didn't open daylight those races. He's nothing but an overrated horse where the tracks were juiced. He produced bugger all as a sire. Just like in bowling where they can oil the lanes so any ammeter bowler can get a strike if he throws a slow hook. Same thing with those tracks all of them were juiced. These morons commenting their brains short-circuited somewhere along the line since 1974.
@@heathfitzgerald363 Era for era Dan Patch was hands down the greatest who ever lived. The freak of nature Mission Brief had the most raw speed of the modern era. I'm sure nobody will read this it was posted so long ago- but I have to say these men are truly well spoken almost eloquent. Their observations of this amazing horse are so well said that they do secretariat his due justice when being spoken of. Bravo
I think Ive watched this clip once a month since it was posted. Why? Because Secretariat’s story is the story of my mother’s love for animals. I lost her nearly 4 years ago and he was her end-all-be-all of competitors. Secretariat was underestimated, so was she. Secretariat raced with a chip on his shoulder, so did she. Secretariat ran his race with a fu%kyou confidence that said Bring it on, so did my Mom. He wanted “to dictate his own strategy,” and so did my mother. I have no memory of his races, but I do have memories of my mother and all the horse races I watched her watch. None of those races made her face light up, until I showed her clips of Secretariat’s Triple Crown run in the last months of her life. Wrecked by congestive heart failure, diabetes, and then leukemia, her face LIT UP the days before she passed because there was her HORSE, her avatar. Secretariat dispatched my mother’s fear in her last days. He “felt like running” in Belmont. My mother raced with him in that moment and found her own race-end.
This documentary is so important. The end of an era. So many talented writers. They caught the spirit of Secretariat. This brings me to tears every time I watch it. If a best ever documentary prize could be objectively judged, this one would be a shoo in. The others that I think are great are Messi films. or Zenyatta!!!
2021 and still watching the greatest horse ever. There will only ever be one Secretariat! Gone, but never forgotten. Secretariat what a beautiful smart horse.
Ha! Me too. The end of this made me choke up - for a horse I so loved as a 12 yr. old girl, for a horse I never personally met & ...for a horse that died 32 yrs. ago! Now that's STAR quality. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Go Big Red 🏇❤🐴
In any other year Sham would have won a triple crown. Sham was probably one of the greatest horses of all time. Unfortunately no horse could be beat big red on those days. No horse....ever.
Thank you, Penny, Ron and Lucient ... for enabling this divine being to thrive on earth with us flawed humans... for all your humble and profound decisions to not crush the majesty of this divine spirit, and so going, gift us with divine brilliance.
I am an animal lover, and of course I love horses, but wouldn't be able to make heads or tails of what makes a horse a champion racer. But, watching HOW dominant Secretariat was at the Belmont gave me chills. 31 length victory?! It almost doesn't sound possible, but it was jaw-dropping to watch a horse just dispatch the other world-class horses like they were another species altogether.

Thanks John for posting this documentary. I am still brought to tears every time I see him 31 lengths ahead crossing the finish line. Secretariet was an incredible, beautiful, intelligent horse. I feel so blessed to have been alive to see his racing career.
Fun fact: An analysis of The Belmont run showed that Secretariat was ACCELERATING as he crossed the finish line. Greatest race horse that ever lived.

Might be the greatest quote of all time.

Do you know what year they did this?
Wow that’s amazing I never knew they did that someone should make video of all tributes he has
That’s a great idea the Belmont folks came up with! I’ve got to see that pole. Hopefully there’s a bunch of pics online.
@@jm1657 You can see it when watching any race at Belmont; it's just inside the last sixteenth pole.
To this day, it still gives me chills like i had in '73, to watch him run.
Brilliant, beautiful horse. Makes me cry, he's so good.
I agree
And later Penny yelled to Ron,don't fall off!!!
That famous pix is now a statue of Ron and Big Red in Ron's hometown in Canada.
I would want to go to all three! There is nothing like watching him come from behind and pass the others like they are standing still, but the anxiety he instills when he breaks for the front in the Belmont is exasperating!
I saw this live on television when I was six. First thoroughbred race I ever watched.
I am not even a horse person, but that horse and his story, is one of my favorite sports stories of all time.
Secretariat in the Belmont Stakes in 1973 was the single most unmatched display of athletic domination and greatness by any living thing on this planet, in any sport or competition, in any arena, at any time, ever...
+Ryan Robinson and to add broke the track record for all Triple Crown races. That will never be done again
Ryan Robinson No other horses not even his kids has even come close to his record I doubt any horse ever will.
American Pharaoh is the great grandson of Secretariat.
Eddie Sweat, his caregiver, was a huge aspect of Secretariat's success. He was closer to Secretariat more than any other human being.
I bet those would talk a bunch. I would
I am a fan of sectratarist watch the video once a week
Totally agree! Eddie Sweat prayed and was with Big Red more than any human. Big Red felt loved.

We won’t! He was something special - he will never be matched!
I've worked with Equine veterinarians for many years! Owned my standard bread horses in my time.
I was a little girl at the time, who had a dad who loved horse racing. I remember him cheering so loudly for this horse, yelling at the TV, every race he ran. My dad loved this horse. Bet on him to win every chance he got. I miss my dad, he passed away in 2016.
Thank you Mary S, and may your father cross paths with Secretariat, in glory...
I was young when he ran and now am old. That's how time goes. I will never see another horse like Secretariat. You watch his feet run and he was just so much faster than any other horse. He was the People's Horse and always will be. Let Him Run, Ronnie! (Penny Tweedy)

As they say, the greatest horse that ever looked through a bridle. Utterly amazing.
Me,too!
Did you ever get to see him at Claiborne farm?
I was a senior too.
He stole our hearts. Thank you, BIG RED, for a glimpse of gloriousness ❤️
I miss him.
Such a touching memory ❤️
Ronnie Turcotte's view down the Stretch, of the other horse's Secretariat left behind at the Belmont is the Greatest Image in Horse Racing History.
It is the most recognized photo for sure! Just like the call... Secretariat is widening now, he’s moving like a tremendous machine, Secretariat by 12, Secretariat by 14 lengths on the turn, gives ya goosebumps!!!
It's one of the greatest images in ALL of history. Period.
After all these years I still get emotional watching Secretariat winning at Belmont. Rest in Grace Secretariat. Your work here was great.
Secretariat was at the zenith of his life. He ran on an absolute perfect day. He did what no other horse has or will ever do again! Still gives me chills.
“Moving like a tremendous machine”… gives me the same chills today and every time I’ve heard it… as it did when I watched it live.
Everyone is yammering (in the vid) about people crying at the race, hell, it's 2022, and just watching this video gets me all teared up. Horses are magnificent animals. And a horse that makes the rest of them look just pedestrian is just amazing. That was phenomenal. I wish I had seen him live.
I wiped a tear from my eye about 5 seconds before I read your comment. Lol
You can watch this magnificent horse's muscles. Everyone of them YEARNING to go faster !
Me too. Riva Ridge as well.
Of course it was biblical, we WE, witnessed a miracle! THAT event or any event such as that one, is a once in a lifetime thing!

He's moving like a tremendous machine - the most iconic race call ever.
The most iconic call in all of sports.

Great touching story.
God was with your grandmother and Big Red that day. He brought them together for a reason on that day.
How grand that you shared this as it touched my heart

Turcotte has always said Secretariat could have gone faster if he'd been asked. No need to ask when you're ahead by 31 lengths.
Turcotte said it scared him when he looked & saw how far ahead they were 😂

@@MoejiiOsmanTV No, he wasn't juiced. His heart was about three times the size of the normal thoroughbred's heart; that was why he never seemed to tire. If you want to accuse a horse of juicing, look at Prove Out. He was off the board in more than half of his career races, and yet ran the second-fastest 12F of all time. He never came close to that level of performance before or after that one race. Just sayin'.

I was 15 in 1973. I do cry even today seeing this video.
That burst of speed in the Belmont is one of, if not the most, incredible thing I've ever seen. It's like he hit the nitrus button in a car.
When he went from last to first in the Preakness in the blink of an eye, you just knew that this horse was truly special.
The Preakness he was like a Ferrari in fifth gear passing a chevys in third.
And he didn't blow the engine with the nitrous...
His heart was 2 and a half times larger than other horses so he def had a bigger motor.
@@George-qw8ss Yup, he was turbo charged.
***Secretariat is going for the lead and it's right now he's looking for it."
***"I looked at the teletimer and saw that the horse had gone three quarters of a mile in 1:09, which is the fastest a horse has ever gone three quarters of a mile in the Belmont Stakes - and he's leaving Sham at this point."
***"He's running and running and running and I turned to the guy next to me and I said, he's lost the horse."
***"Secretariat is widening now. He is moving like a tremendous machine."
***"Secretariat is in a position that he's impossible to catch."
***It was like the Lord was holding the reigns and Secretariat was one of his creatures and maybe whispered to him- go." "It was like a supernatural experience, it really was."
***"I leapt out of my chair at Belmont Park shouting we'll never see this again."
### The tears start for me with the slow motion up close look at Sham and Secretariat running side by side.
I bet your dear wife is talking to Big Red now.

Every time we get to the part of history where they tell about Secretariat being euthanized for laminitis, I cry and get a little angry. I console myself with the rest of his life - they can't take that away from him - ever.
sorry about your wife

He had a boil on his mouth that hurt him.
AND DON'T FORGET THE CALL ..... "BUT SECRETARIAT
IS ALL ALONE !!!"
ABSOLUTE TRUTH! ❤️👏
And his great-great-grandson is now a triple crown winner.
My dad now deceased was at The Belmont even though we lived in California. He bought 2 $2.00 bets to win with Secretariat. He kept them and made a poster with them framed that sat in his office for decades. He was an amazing horse. I don’t think any horse has beat his track records since.
Was there too...I still have that winning ticket in my wallet
...50 years, and all three stakes races track records are still held by Secretariat.
I had a Bold Ruler great grandson. One thing to say about that line: Charisma.
Ooooh, how blessed you are!
Turcotte to Secretariat at the top turn: "Boy, you're in last place, don't make me whip u..."
Secretariat: "Hold my beer..."
The greatest athletic performance by any athlete of all time………
At the Belmont Stakes Secretariat was running against really good competition and Sham was very fast. In fact, Sham could have been competitive against everyone, except Sham had to face the greatest horse of all time.
In any other year other than 1973, Sham may have been a triple crown winner himself. But against Secretariat, he was just another horse.
Secretariat was an amazing horse but i wouldnt say greatest horse of all time.
@@heathfitzgerald363 Era for era Dan Patch was hands down the greatest who ever lived. The freak of nature Mission Brief had the most raw speed of the modern era. Her two year year world record was only one fifth of a second off the two year old filly pacer world record that year. Something that likely will never happen again ever.
When ever I see this ..I get goosebumps.....what a great legend he is...
A legend that will be forever planted in our memory. 50th anniversary. Thank you Big Red!!!!!!
70's the best in almost every single way.. This is one of the tops on a remarkable decade.
I love that call..".he is moving like a tremendous machine"...perfect call for a perfect horse.
"Ronnie Turcotte has his whip put away, and Secretariat has it put away" - and the whole world was his... wow.
I'm sure nobody will read this it was posted so long ago- but I have to say these men are truly well spoken almost eloquent. Their observations of this amazing horse are so well said that they do secretariat his due justice when being spoken of. Bravo
Destin - I have watched this many times, it never gets old. I agree with you wholeheartedly!
My mother raced with him in that moment and found her own race-end.
nack's book is aclassic for the ages
This documentary is so important. The end of an era. So many talented writers. They caught the spirit of Secretariat. This brings me to tears every time I watch it. If a best ever documentary prize could be objectively judged, this one would be a shoo in. The others that I think are great are Messi films. or Zenyatta!!!
@@fillinman1 "If he coulda talked, he woulda been a son of a bitch!"
Go Big Red 🏇❤🐴
In any other year Sham would have won a triple crown. Sham was probably one of the greatest horses of all time. Unfortunately no horse could be beat big red on those days. No horse....ever.
True.
Kind of like Michelle Kwan and Tara Lipinski/Sarah Hughes....
@@sdcashman45 they are nothing to secretariat
@val goozy. Analogy only. Get a grip.

It almost doesn't sound possible, but it was jaw-dropping to watch a horse just dispatch the other world-class horses like they were another species altogether.
still thrills me, almost 50 years later. ❤️
♥️ he is the best Legend, isn't he😉
I AM 60 YEARS OLD, HAVE WATCHED MANY SPORTING EVENTS IN MY LIFE. THE BELMONT RACE IS THE SINGLE GREATEST EVENT I HAVE EVER SEEN. I WAS 14 YEARS OLD AT THE TIME AND REMEMBER THINKING NO MATTER HOW LONG I LIVE I WILL NEVER SEE AMYTHING LIKE THAT AGAIN.
Thanks John for posting this documentary. I am still brought to tears every time I see him 31 lengths ahead crossing the finish line. Secretariet was an incredible, beautiful, intelligent horse. I feel so blessed to have been alive to see his racing career.
When I hear just seconds of the that race being called, I get chills. Greatest race I or anyone could ever watch.
