Secretariat is one of my favourite films that involves horses. I then watch this clip of the 3 races and by the end of it I was in tears!!! Just to see a jockey and horse in tune with each other., and the fact that the jockey hardly uses the whip is a testament of how good a horse Secretariat is/was. The only other horse that comes within a smidgeon to Secretariat was Red Rum, the only horse to win 3 Grand Nationals, a National Hunt horse race held annually at Aintree Racecourse, Liverpool in the UK. It is a handicap steeplechase over an official distance of about 4 miles and 2½ furlongs (4 miles 514 yards (6.907 km)), with horses jumping 30 fences over two laps. But Secretariat was a beast on the flat. His winning margin of at least 25 lengths will go down as the greatest race ever, and to this day has not been matched.

Great video!!! Thank you so much! My entire family loved the horses. I remember we would go on day trips to the track all the time. I’m from Newark New Jersey so we would go to Yonkers, Belmont, The Meadowlands, and of course OTB. I was only six years old in 73. But I’ll never forget my entire family watching TV when Secretariat won the triple Crown! We were all going insane! Screaming for him to win and everybody was crying! That was one of my earliest memories, I’ll never forget it. And I’ll never forget Big Red! Thanks for the memories! He will always be the G.O.A.T. …………✌💙😇🐎💫

At the Belmont, Secretariat wanted to go all out, to see just how fast he could go. Or to prove it. He ran just to show us how fast he could go, and he revelled in it.

    Therefore,

I watch all the videos of Secretariat that I can find. Your commentary is great. I never knew about Sham's injury. He was so lucky to finish the race without breaking down. From all my hours of watching Big Red and all the books I have read I understand he was a very intelligent savvy horse. I started thinking he was well aware of the various distances he trained for and then ran. Maybe he didn't worry about finishing last because he understood how far he had to run in the big 3 races. Breaking last he scoped out the competition and chose when to make his move as well as how fast to push himself. Belmont strikes me as Red testing himself and Turcotte being great enough to let him. All the people around Red have said he was brilliant so I hope that brilliance is why he gave his all at Belmont. He pushed himself as no human ever would have for fear of injuring him. Just like so many top level young athletes, he wanted to know his own limits regardless of the competition. And so he became the "Tremendous Machine" that we all still love today. And Red found out what he was made for.

With all due respect, American Pharoah and Justify did not win their triple crown under the same rules as the first 11. There was no point system in place for the first eleven winners ….which meant that they had to take on anyone who entered the race. The competition wasn’t modified back then with a point system to ensure the top sprinters would not have enough points to get in the derby and screw up the pace….yet they could have entered in previous years based on their earnings. This is what I have noticed since this point system was implemented long after Affirmed became the 11th triple crown winner. The fields are now modified to reduce the competition for the top horses so they have a much better chance of winning the triple crown. After all, we’re entitled to see a triple crown winner every few years and forget about the notion that it’s supposed to be an impossible feat to accomplish. The fans are entitled. Change the rules and BAM now you have triple crown winners that have only run six times in their life. Been a racing fan from the 1960s….this sport is not new to me and I know the rules and all the big players throughout the years. The actual sport is over with….has been since the late 90s. What we have today are horse race shows…..which lightly raced horse can win six in a row then retire as quickly as possible? All of the past dozen or so eclipse award winning horses of the year.
