- Over 1 million racehorses have been born, trained and raced since Secretariat’s triple crown. None will ever run the Belmont faster!
I went to a garage sale in Denver, Colorado the summer of 2018 and it turned out to be Chris Tweedy's sale. His mother, Penny Chenery owned Secretariat (later sold shares). This video has unique footage of the Preakness not found anywhere else. Also, Penny had other clips added that she personally liked. This is the Triple Crown video Penny watched over the years.
Her sons had a lot of Secretariat memorabilia including this video. Chris’ brother, John Tweedy was there also, they still love to talk about Secretariat and their mom, Penny. They signed their most popular photo from the Kentucky Derby for me. Talk about an unexpected, miracle find!

God's gift to mankind. Such a magnificent animal. I ask myself if Secretariat was running as fast as he could run in the Belmont. It was like he was ready to take flight. There will never be another Secretariat. Thank you, God, for allowing humans to witness perfection.
If that track had been 3 miles long, he still would have gotten a speed record. He never stopped accelerating, right to the end. Probably could have gone another mile with ease.

@@andrethompson2034 Yup, he was just galloping the rider (Ron) was just letting him do his thing. He wasn't pushing him or anything. The trainer was even telling him to just hang on. So, that's what he was doing. He they had really pushed him his record would have been far lower. And he was young, if they had given him 1 more year when he was at his peak he'd have been a beast!
@@hollywoodpineapple8337 the entire day he was different, from the paddock to the track. Like Nack said, it’s like he was marching to the gallows. Ronnie was just along for the ride, my beloved Sham attempting to defy the Gods in his last race. Very emotional stuff.
@@Psyfi85 Sham may not have won but he will forever be a legend alongside Sec. because of these races. He probably helped him run so fast by putting on the pressure. It would have been boring if it was just Secretariat and no competition, Sham was a good opponent. His name will be remember FARRR more than the other horses in these races, as the focus was just on the 2 of them.
Not only was he the greatest horse ever . He's the best looking horse I ever laid eyes on he had it all . God is good !

They could have taken Secretariat to any horse show and blown away the competition in the 3 year old halter stallion class. He was a sight to behold….and he was gorgeous.

During the Preakness.. But here comes Secretariat, he's moving fast, and he's going to the outside, he's going for the lead and it's right now he's looking for it! Watching this race and hearing those words, even to this day, gives me chills! What a horse he was. I feel blessed that I was able to watch him race live.
Secretariat was the greatest racehorse ever born. He owns all the records for the Triple Crown. What a Magnificent animal he was. I saw these races on TV when they were run in 1973. I love watching these three races and have a tape of them I purchased years ago.
Yes, he truly was completely unique. Are there stallions in the wild that dwarf him? Perhaps. Not equal as it is, plus he had the X factor coupled with his frame. Sham also shared this gene, and certainly put it on display. An interesting time it must’ve been.
I don't know you have to throw the Australian horse Phar Lap into any conversations of greatest. That horse may not have been as fast but he was incredibly in weight handicap races.
It’s amazing how exciting these races are, even after all these years. Brings tears to my eyes. What a special, special, horse. A little part of heart died with him. I will never forget when the news broke about his death. He never showed that he was in so much pain. What an inspirational animal he was.
I don't know a damn thing about horses or horse racing and am not sure how I ended up watching hours and hours of Secretariat running these three races. I have watched every video that came up after I watched the first one. So, I wouldn't know if he was the greatest or not. It seems to me that winning the Triple Crown in times fast enough to still hold the records is a pretty remarkable accomplishment. What I found amazing was watching the video after the Preakness, when he was in the winners circle with the flowers over his neck and the lady, I think she was his owner? Anyway, she and another guy line up close to Secretariat's head and the cameras are clicking and you see him look at the woman, the man and then the camera's with a look like, "I am the one that ran the race people. Your attention should be on me as I am the best!" He seemed very aware of what was happening and was living for the recognition. Again, I know nothing about horses but he was really a beautiful horse and watching him race, even just here on CZcams, is a real privilege. I had goosebumps the whole way and for a champion that I wouldn't have been able to pick out of a group of 10 horses. I left here and went to read up on him and was particularly amazed about the autopsy reports regarding his heart being so large and his chest measurements were so large that he had to have special equipment. I know everyone on here is likely wondering why I am going on about this horse but man, I think he is amazing. Certainly the best athlete in my humble opinion.
Deborah, if you like reading, you might check out a book about another great champion horse, "Man o' War" by Walter Farley. Obviously Man o' War was very different from Secretariat, and he ran in the 1920s, but the book goes into a lot of fascinating details about high-level thoroughbred horse racing. One interesting detail: In those days there was no starting gate, just a netting across the track that would jerk upward to start the race. Man o' War fought at every race and often had terrible starts. The only race he didn't win, he was turned all the way around facing the wrong way when the starting gun sounded, and he still came in second ... to a horse named Upset.
deborahdoesscrap ... I'd wager that everyone who knows a bit about Secretariat to a lot about him doesn't wonder at all why you are "going on about this horse..." He was a magnificent creature, athlete AND personality. As you read on about Big Red, or watch vids, or documentaries, you'll hear more details about his awareness and comprehension about racing and winning -- and even losing. Also, how other animals and horses reacted to him ... there's a video about Secretariat, retired, at stud at Claiborne Farms. In one scene, there's the story about him and other horses. When humans would take feed or hay outside where horses were pasturing, or spending time, all of the other horses held back and let Secretariat get to the food and partake first. He was superior, and he knew it, other horses knew it, and we knew it.
I had the great good fortune to go to the 1973 Derby. It was all VERY exciting, as Big Red was already nationally known. When I watched the Preakness on TV, I was first scared, then thrilled, then overcome by watching this horse -- his move in that race was exceptional. As for the Belmont -- well, like many did, I ended up watching on TV, stood up as he and Sham ran neck and neck, and when Red pulled away and kept stretching the lead, I burst into tears. Apparently, many, many viewers and those there also cried because it was ethereal, so moving, so overwhelming.
Completely agree about Sec, he was like Pegasus on Earth. For me personally in watching his races I’ve become endeared to the mighty Sham, he was such a handsome and extremely talented horse and there’s a reason his KD record still stands as well. Plus the fact they’re directly related through their dams, it was all destiny it seems.
I know a lot about horses, I actually was there at the time he won the Belmont, and that was the most exciting race I've ever seen! The most amazing part to it, is that he won without being whipped, he was hand ridden all the way through, and still won the race at record time and a huge distance, that's not an easy feat, most horses need urging because they want to get everything they can out of them, so they start whiping the poor horse, but Secretariat wasn't even tired, he could have kept on going! Sometimes I wish they had let him!

48 years and over a million horses born. He still owns the triple crown records and the world record for the Belmont. There will never be another Secretariat. Ever. RIP Big Red. So grateful to see you run. I saw him beat Tentam in the Man O' War stakes.
Records meant to be broken but it does seem unlikely that his time at the Belmont will be beaten.

Spectacular Bid was faster. At almost every distance. And certainly at the champions distance of 1 1/4 miles. Where champions a judged.

@@raymondeaton5692 That's a strange way to approach it Ray. What part of Spectacular Bid was just a faster horse do you not understand? This is not speculation, it is staring everyone right in the face. Just look at the numbers. Even with 10 more lbs he was faster.

I was eleven years old when Secretariat won the Triple Crown and I still get excited when I watch reruns of each race.
Same here and even at 11, I knew I was watching a miracle..a once in a lifetime event. I still tear up watching that horse run!
Me too! I remember being scared before the Belmont that he wouldn't win or that he would be injured. Little did I know that age in 11 in 1973 that I would be watching the greatest athletic performance for my lifetime. Still nothing like it IMHO.

My favorite sports quote regarding Secretariat was from Jack Nicklaus, still considered the world's greatest golfer. After being asked why he was brought to tears watching the race he said: "I've spent my entire life in a quest for perfection.....I finally saw it at the Belmont"
It’s amazing that just in these 3 races you see the different ways this horse can win - stalking field in the Derby. A last to first blast in the Preakness and an absolute start to finish bludgeoning in the Belmont. Every race was the same, all Turcotte ever had to do was push the ‘GO’ button on him and the race was over.

@@bunkshaner22 Turcotte gave him a couple of whacks in the Derby but I think that was more to push him into a tighter turn than to get more speed out of a horse that was already moving like a freight train. The picture is a bit blurry so it’s hard to tell but according to Turcotte, Eddy Maple gave him a couple of whacks in the Canadian International too but who knows why, he’d been stalking the leader the entire race and all he was waiting for there was for Eddy to let him go.
@@rickbateman2401 you can see secretariat actually turn his head in one of the races to look around the blinders. You can see the whites of his eyes. Lol
I remember seeing him stop and pose for the cameras as well lol.
So much about the horse that was amazing. Truly a once in a lifetime horse. But I saw a glimpse of him in Rich Strike a few weeks ago. A few traits. The heart & want, demeanor, attitude, the way he ran etc. even the way he interacted with his groomer.
I had my wife watch the videos the other night & she was smiling from ear to ear. No matter how long ago it was it’s awesome to watch & keep the memories alive
@@bunkshaner22 You can see him looking at birds taking off when he's on the turn coming home in the Belmont. I can't see it in this view, the angle is a little different, but in the usual TV view you can see the birds take off about two minutes in and you can see Secretariat turn his head to watch them. He wasn't even fully focused and he still set a time that will never be beaten.
I was lucky enough to see the races as they happened. I saw Ron hand riding, no whip. For all Secretariat was, Sham was wonderful in his own right. Ground eating stride, great heart. His only fault? He was born in the wrong year. Who knows what he could have done had he not been constantly in Secretariats shadow.
Sham was the best first loser, for sure. Race Red 10 times and Sham would lose 10 times.

Based on what we all see in the TC that year, remove Red and Sham is literal runaway champion. Assuming the races would’ve played out the same way. Sham had an iron will, but Red was Pegasus.
He also had a larger than average heart but,again, second to Secretariat. I feel for him and Alydar -another amazing horse that might have been the TC winner if born in a different year
Truly an incredible horse. It almost looked as if he was playing with the other horses in the Derby and Preakness, then he showed them what an amazing creature he was in the Belmont. Secretariat had reserve power that will most likely never be seen again. This was almost 50 years ago and there has yet to be another dominant horse like this.
Ronnie hit him once in the Derby…somewhere at the top of the stretch. However, Ronnie never touched him in the Preakness or the Belmont stakes …those two races he was hand ridden. You don’t see that it n a grade I triple crown race…..all the jockeys have their whips out in the stretch…..except for Ron Turcott. Turcott’s whip was down and put away because he didn’t need it.
After the Preakness, our beloved, gorgeous Secretariat said you ain't seen nothing yet, and the rest is history. 💖
Belmont was of course was just sick but can we take a moment to appreciate that rush for the lead in the Preakness. It was like the other horses hit a patch of deep mud. That "he is moving fast" was understated.
I have to pick my jaw up every time I watch that move! You can't believe what your seeing!

I born was born about 4 decades too late to watch Secretariat win the Triple Crown live, so I'm very grateful to all the people who upload their recordings to the internet. Hopefully one day I can watch a horse that shines almost as brightly as Secretariat.
For years I've been wishing there was a high quality video available of these races, which are among the greatest athletic performances of all time, and finally one has emerged! Thank you so much - this is truly priceless.

There is a better copy with better sound is way better than this one. I can barely hear it. Chic Anderson's call is the best in racing history. The name of the channel is "Truly Epic" the name of the video is Secretariat - Triple Crown Races - High Quality (Rare Footage) I watch it at lead every single day.
"Among the greatest athletic performances of all time" ... perfect description. It seems like a fad in the past few years to compare horses to Secretariat and "prove" he wasn't really the greatest, but his Belmont run is the real proof that he was. He made most of the field look like nags and put the fine and gallant Sham away before even reaching the turn. The cameras couldn't get both him and the field in the same shot. He won going away looking like he was romping in a pasture. He really was THE greatest and always will be. RIP Big Red!
49 years now and still the fastest triple crown winner ever!!!!!
Secretariat was the greatest racehorse to ever live!!! He had a beautiful body and was the perfect specimen of a horse which he knew how to pose for his pictures and would strike a pose when cameras were around.
According to the people who took care of him, said he would be mad when he lost a race and would go to the back of his stall to think about it. Then the next race, he would win and set a record. That's so human-like. I think he really liked to wear those roses after a win too; lol.
But those races were great testaments to how fast this horse was as well as how he could turn it on when he wanted. The Belmont Stakes was a miracle before those people's eyes to see that he never had to be last in any race but enjoyed passing everybody to get to the finish line first. He decided that he was going to show people what he could really do. Or it was GOD who took his finger and gave him a push and said, now show my glory. This was the horse built by GOD!!!
My mother and I saw this wonderful horse win the triple crown, I will never forget it!
The fact that Secretariat had such a hugh lead that Ron Turcotte had to stand up and turn around to find Sham is absolutely iconic.

I don't think Ron Turcott stood up in the stirrups when he quickly glanced back as Secretariat rounded the final turn into the homestretch at Belmont Park because Turcott could no longer hear the other horses and wondered where they all were? He would have known that standing up in the stirrups causes more wind resistance aerodynamically and slows a horse down in a horse race.
Ron was in for the ride of his life! Can you imagine just being on Secretariat and flying? Yes he looked back because he couldn't hear the other horses! Oh my gosh. I get so excited when I watch him and he is so beautiful and he knows it! I love this horse!
That close up near the end is just other worldly. I’ll NEVER tire of watching Secretariat’s triple crown wins. If there was ever old video footage that should be worked on for clarity to the best that technology can provide, it’s this!
I have watched these races a few dozen times and it never fails to thrill me! If I'm ever down I watch Secretariat race and it is always a big pick me up. It's like I am watching God perform a miracle. I would love to go to a garage sale and make a find like this. Thanks for sharing.
I am so grateful that I was able to witness this horse winning these 3 races. Also worth watching is his last race, The Woodbine, from Toronto, Canada (on CZcams). Like the Belmont, it became a match race between Canada's horse of the year, Kennedy Road, and Secretariat. And, like the Belmont, Secretariat pulled away and won by a wide margin, with KR having nothing left in the tank and finishing 9th or 10th.
He just wanted to run. I’m so glad I was alive to watch him race. The greatest thoroughbred EVER. 🌹🌹🌹🐎🐎🐎🥃🥃🥃 Get the mint juleps ready- first Saturday in May is upon us and it’s DERBY DAY!

It had been a while since I've seen this, esp. the Belmont. So I expected "no tears this time, just watch'n'". But... no, from the moment that Big Red breaks free from Sham... tears. Again. And unstoppable from the moment when the speaker says in awe "Secretariat is moving like a tremendous machine!". There's just a deeper meaning in it for me. To do with freedom, being your true self, overcoming hinderances a being above put downs. Ruling Supreme. It's pure magic. So exuse me for fogging up, again.
Understand completely. Watched that Belmont (and all 3 races) with 2 of my friends at age 15, get the same emotional response anytime I watch it. It was a once in a lifetime race by a once in a lifetime (maybe ever) horse!
I am a female former jockey. I am now in my 60's and miss it more than words can say. I cry every time I watch Secretariat run. He was not a normal horse.
I too cry most times I watch this and Ive seen it a many times-something about what it emotionally does to/for me that really can't be described-only felt. Watching this amazing animal using the gifts that God gave him without getting in his own way--without his talents being compromised by his thinking or his history but just using every bit of who he is to the fullest-all out to the finish-is as moving a sight as there can be. The move in the Preakness in particular-watching him just turn it on like the others were standing still is one of my favorites. An amazing animal and a teacher to everyone who sees this.

There is nothing you can do but be in awe of such a beautiful tremendous machine in motion. To be honest, it's all you can do to just hang on because you can't stop him. The power is just that overwhelming, unlease of power most have never seen. I miss those days of just hanging on for dear life.
This is the clearest version of these races I have ever seen. At the Preakness the horses broke from the gate at the 3:04 mark and at the 3:20 if you watch closely you can see Big Red kick it in another gear and blow by the field. He gave them a 16 second head start and there was nothing any of them could do about it.
Jeff Pinar picked the best version of the Preakness! You can see Secretariat when he jumped to the outside and take off. Most videos don't show this version which I don't understand. It's the best!

The amazing thing about that is you don’t make a move like that that early in a race he wasn’t only a fast horse he had great stamina and what can you say about the Belmont that’s a record that will never ever be touched . You can talk man of war all you want big red was the greatest racehorse ever

There isn’t a horse that ever lived that will touch Secretariat on that day why after almost 50 years do every one of secretariat‘s Triple Crown records still stands yeah he was nothing but an old mule he certainly wasn’t nowhere near Man O War I wouldn’t want to get that name wrong again 🤣🤣🤣

The Derby, with the Big Man gaining speed throughout the entire race --- the Belmont, in which THE Horse took absolute control of the entire situation --- but the Preakness was THE race, in my humble opinion. When Red launched himself into the race (at about 3:20 through about 3:48 or so), that move, that move of power, purpose, and disdain for the field makes me weep. [I was 22 when Secretariat ran, and watching each race still makes me emotional]
It was definitely a power move but I think the Derby was his best race. He got boxed in for a couple hundred yards, ran most of the race 4 wide off the rail, ran each quarter faster than the previous, won going away and broke Northern Dancer’s record doing it. The only reason why I say the Derby over the Belmont is because the Belmont wasn’t a race - it was a good old fashion beat down.

@ Last One Standing, I agree with you about the Preakness. I read an interview with the jockey of Ecole Etage. He said he heard a horse approaching but didn’t know who it was. He said Secretariat blew past him like a freight train!!!
Finally! footage of this amazing horse that doesn't look like it was filmed with a potato. Very clear and great color. This horse was amazing, never be another one like him.

A little before the "tremendous machine" comment, when Anderson says, with a tone of astonishment, "Secretariat is all alone!"
How does one call a one horse race?
Turcotte was smart enough to let the horse gauge each race as it unfolded. I'm not a big racing fan, but how many horses could turn on the power like Secretariat? Especially against other top horses in the biggest races of their careers. It's easy to get boxed in on the rail or run too wide and lose time and energy but Ron did a nice job. He always seemed very humble in subsequent interviews, too. A great team around a super horse.
This is the best view of the Kentucky Derby Secretariat race I’ve seen. All the races were easy to watch. Thanks a lot. What a horse!!!

You can see the exact moment Secretariat broke Sham’s will at the Belmont. What a magnificent beast Secretariat was.
Poor Sham was a marvelous colt. I watched him win the Santa Anita Derby and felt sure he could beat that big red guy out East. And he did, too, in the Wood Memorial (when Secretariat was ailing). Rip Secretariat and Sham.
@@ratso4443 I think if Sham would have been a year older or younger and not had to run against big red, we would be talking more about him as a triple crown winner or close to it.

I hope Big Red’s records forever stand. He was the closest thing to Pegasus this world has seen. And even better, he was a Virginia horse-my home state ♥️
A combination of a spectacular cardiovascular system and an enormous hind quarters that was nothing but pure power made him a true freak of nature. He ran each of the five quarters of the Derby faster than the one before. A majestic, beautiful freak.

This is wonderful, so clear and sharp. Thank you for posting it. There is no reason why the 1972 and 1973 races online are so muddy and unclear except that the high-quality videos have never been released to the best of my knowledge. So this video is the best. The colors are true and clear. The video of the Preakness shows Secretariat's amazing powerhouse move going around the first turn which isn't shown in all the other videos I've seen.
The NYRA FINALLY released a full color version in March 2016...search NYRA 1973 Belmont to find it.
To put these races into perspective - he ran a good chunk of the Derby the long way around the track - 3 and some times 4 horses off the rail - and broke Northern Dancer’s record time. Then in the Belmont, in a race that was longer and he should have needed to conserve energy, he actually ran the first 1 1/4 mile in a time that would have broken his own Derby record.
Amazingly good footage. Thank you for the upload. First time I ever got to witness Secretariat take off and pass everybody in the Preakness. A perfect animal. A joy to behold.

I love watching old school horse racing I'm from Australia we have some good horses from time to time but watching secretariat win those races I think he would best most horses even today.
Did you know that our Melbourne Cup race record is held by a horse named 'Kingston Rule'?
Kingston Rule is one of Secretariat's sons!

I think it’s supposed to be the owners view of the race from wherever the owners sit…the grand stand or private viewing area inside the clubhouse. I’m not sure….but from where they sat they had a great view of the race.
I watch all three of the triple crown races every day. I am still amazed at what i see. Beautiful horse
This spring it will be 49 YEARS! SECRETARIAT still is the most fantastic horse to ever live. When GOD builds a winner watch out! I never tire of watching this magnificent horse! Thank you for the clarity, the shien of his skin sparkles!
I could watch him every day and never get bored. The most beautiful horse I've ever laid my eyes on. I was 11 when I watched him win the triple crown. Still can't get enough of him .

The only sad thing is that I am not sure when he was putout to stud if he still had his groom. I'm afraid he lost all the people he used to have around him. He had to have been lonely for the people he loved and knew. I'm afraid he died so young bc he wasn't riden or exercised enough. Putting on those extra pounds of weight may have caused the laminitis. But I have never opened a horse before. It's just my museings.

At any rate, getting back to our favorite Stallion, I am thrilled that no other horse has broken the records set by that magnificent copper colored Secretariat! I have seen where some people were lucky to find one of his lineage and his great great great grandsons and granddaughters were sweet tempered too. He will stand for eternity as the horse that God built. I wish I could have seen the race. I lived in a tiny mountain town in the Shenandoah valley that had one TV station. I didn't know until the races were over and had no knowledge that he was so near to me. Missed opportunities. I'm a Christian and though the Bible doesn't say it, I think all animals go to Heaven. So he's probably still running like the wind! Nice mental image!
Hi Hazel , I was 11 years old and watched all three races on TV while living in Maine..we had a riding stable and I rode often but that was only for a short period of time. Eventually all the horses had to be sold and it always left a hole in my heart. I think that may by the reason I feel such an attachment to this horse. I just finished reading the book Secretariat by William Nack and will start reading The Horse God Built. I don't consider myself very religious but i know all animals go to heaven! Never did I imagine that I was watching history in the making. I hope selfishly that his records are never broken. He truly is the horse God built.

If you’ll notice, Ronnie never once used the whip on Secretariat in all 3 Triple Crown races! None. It would be like striking Royalty. And Ronnie knew, that Secretariat needed no encouragement. He was just along for the ride. His horse knew exactly what was at stake and rose to the occasion like no other athlete had ever done. Magnificence personified!
Actually Ron said, even, that he smacked him in the Derby.

OMG what a find and thank you for this amazing enhancement. Jaw dropping performances by the greatest thoroughbred -- there will never be another like him.
I’m glad the camera shows a close up of him crossing the finish line in the each race…..because it shows all the haters that this horse was still digging in at the wire…..in full stride with no signs of fatigue…..not slowing down at the finish line like they do today. Secretariat was still in a drive at the wire of the Belmont stakes and was not shortening his stride and Ronnie hand ride him. This horse was a true beast when he was healthy….nothing could touch him.

I have seen some of this footage online before with better audio but your video seem a little sharper. The others were centered but also cropped. Yours also had different music in spots. And in the Belmont yours had a much better focus on Secretariat. What a treasure. Thank you for the upload!
I've watched dozens of videos of these races previously and none of them have the clarity and color this one has! Thank you for posting this! It really enhances the races themselves when you can see everything so well. I was beginning to believe there were no quality videos of Secretariat's races. You have done a great justice to Secretariat himself, thanks again.

I'm kind of surprised that nobody has ever pointed out the size of Secretariat's neck compared to the other horses. You can really see in the Preakness when he takes the lead and pulls in front of the lead horse. He is along side the other horse and Secretariat's neck is much bigger than that horse and other horses.
I noticed how huge his muscular neck was , and also his muscular rump ; very big . He was a very handsome horse , the best looking that I can remember .

Great video, it looks much better and with more vivid colors than others that circulate on youtube, thanks for publishing it and giving us the opportunity to see again the best thoroughbred of all time, his records in the triple crown races are still maintained in 2019, and especially that of the Beltmont Park race that is a world record for distance, which I particularly think will last many more years to be beaten, Secretariat does not fuel the most winning or the one that produced the most money, but won its undisputed position as champion of champions with those three incredible races, once again thanks for sharing.

Secretariat not only won The Belmont in record time, he won all three of his Triple Crown races in record times - and almost 50 years later, each of these record times still stand. Unbelievable! What a horse!
I love the clarity of the film. One can really see Secretariat coming to the finish line in the Belmont Stakes, under a hand ride, and he was still reaching out for more when he went under the wire. He showed no signs of fatigue at all. Some of the younger racing fans today can’t handle Secretariat because American Pharoah and Justify couldn’t even come close to what he did as a 2 year old and as a 3 year old Secretariat was just a far superior horse than Bafferts two steroid runners.

I remember this, but I was a little boy at the time. I do not recall the particulars of how we ended up with just six horses running this Preakness and just five in the Belmont. Perhaps they were dropping out as all the attention (and the odds) basically became the Secretariat show? I was actually riding at the time and it was all so awesome.

I would have loved to see Secretariat race against Zenyatta in a triple crown matchup, which I realize wasn't or isn't actually possible .. but what a hell of a matchup that would have been!

When I am asked who is the greatest athlete of all time I answer with Secretariat . A triple crown winner with 3 world record times in all 3 races that still stand to this day :)
He raced 21 times and for records, Man O' War broke 8 records. Secretariat definitely is 2nd, I can't think of another 2 and 3 year old that broke as many.

@@B00G1964 Some of Secretariat's records still stand, and to make him the greatest, his connections, trying to outdo the best ever, they stole the Preakness time. So his TC stakes records stand and the Marlboro but look at who has come after, not exactly the Dr. Fagers and Kelsos of horse racing. And it's not like with a little push, horses don't come close.

I have relived all 3 of My Secretariat's triple crown races and I am so thankful to CZcams for posting this amazing video for posterity and for up and coming horseracing lovers like myself to enjoy. Millions will be able to witness this great animal of history. I was 12 going on 13 when Big red made his jaunts into history and I love to see the triple crown races every year from now on. I am now 61 and reliving this great animal of history and wondering if we will ever see another like him. He is said to have had a heart 1 and a 1/2 the size of normal horse's. That's how he could process so much air in his lungs to propell him to great feats of tremendous effort. You are the best CZcams for saving this moment for posterity. Thanks for the memories

He set a track record in all three races, and he was hardly whipped in any of them, wow!
Turcotte gave him a couple of cracks at the top of the backstretch in the Derby - that was the only time in the TC races that he was touched with the whip.

This is an incredible find. Thank you so much for sharing it. I had only seen the fairly crisp version of the 1973 Belmont posted by the New York Racing Association.
I had just turned 18 and went to my first Preakness. I was there for the in-field party and you can't really see the race from there. I never realized how great this horse was at the time. They play this race at the clubhouse at Pimlico in a loop.
