- Today I am showing my experience trying out MasterClass. I tried Gordon Ramsay's class, and this is how it went!

This is not a sponsored video. I tried my best to give an unbiased review of Masterclass. However I did use affiliate links, so if you found this video to be useful to deciding if you want to try Masterclass or not, and want to support my channel, that would be super cool if you purchased through there!
There are pros and cons to it, and really what it comes do to is if you are actually going to do the classes, I think they are great quality and worth the price.

Same for me also. 😄😄😄😄

Lmao same here xddd
was just about to comment that haha

'i kinda burned the toast'
*the toast looking like it was to Hell and back*
David Lendl lol
And she ate it. She'll get cancer 😦 at least that's What's my mom told me
Ramsay: "My God, that toast looks like it was in the Chicago fire. You can't serve shit like that...what are you thinking? It is burned beyond recognition. I would not serve that to my Dog...Good God!"
Freakin' Doomguy toast over here.
It was made by a hells kitchen intern lol
shes really acting like her frozen meals arent full of added sugar, salt and fat😂
True. There is probably way more sugar, salt and fat, in what shits she eats normally.
I agree she doesn’t realise that the way she’s doing it now is way more healthy even with the butter etc. What I find is its just the lack of cooking skills people have. I mean how can you get your mind blown by cooking chicken......like how are you not cooking chicken.
Agree, just what I was going to say also!
butter isn't actually that bad
@Neil Mo Exactly. Butter and unrefined Oils are definitely not "unhealthy". That's old news. Saying that chicken breast with vegetables is an "unhealthy dish" because it has butter and salt in it, is... Is just absolute bonkus
It’s called Masterclass because the instructors are all “masters” in their field not that you can master what they have taken years to do in a few videos. 🤦♂️
Watching this made some my brain cell goes "?"
I’m sure she understands that.
Shouldve just youtubed recepies lol
Exactly!!
boom roasted
6:25 She admits to cooking only frozen food, makes a comment about butter and salt in a handmade dish and not being healthy... OOOOOKAY =D
There are healthy frozen food, if you are wiling to pay for it.
"Healthy frozen food" hahaahahahahahhahahahahaahah
She probably checks the frozen meals that she buys.
@@mohammedhussain6749 yea she obviously knows a lot about nutrition..
Frozen food ain’t actually that bad, but if you eat *only* frozen food u got a problem
5:01
Her: “I can’t believe I made this..... Woahhh”
Me: “burnt toast? With a barely runny egg??”
right... like wut.
She should have at least scraped the burnt areas of the toast before proceeding. Or just make another toast! I was rolling my eyes when I realized that she's a total amateur/noob
@@blakdragn Toast... I mean who doesn't know how to make TOAST?? Or just make another one before presenting the food to the public.
Lmaoooo y’all I don’t think she burnt it I think that was just the truffle
@@DreamBig1920 nah 4:29 look closely and you'll see that it's burnt bread. You can tell j by looking close
cooking tip : Next time u burn toast let it cool and scrape off there burnt part with a bread knife it will look and taste much better.. Love ur content Shelby
As someone who is really into cooking, I've always wondered exactly what they go over in the food masterclasses. In the various recipes and intro did they talk about things like how salt is the most important seasoning or how to use the Maillard reaction (browning) to build flavor (like in the chicken supreme method)? When cooking is boiled down to its basic components a lot of great food is simple things like:
1. Using the appropriate amount of salt to bring out the flavor of the ingredients (more than most people think)
2. Use high-quality ingredients when possible
3. Cook proteins to the right internal temperature (use a thermometer)
4. Develop flavors through browning, caramelizing, and emulsifying (depending on the dish preparation)
Based on your review, it seems like skipping masterclass and starting with youtube or cookbooks that give you some of the why behind cooking techniques. Some of my favorites books for learning have been Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat by Samin Nosrat and the Food Lab by Kenji Lopez.
Agreed
Yeah, it seems like a lot of these classes are just tutorials for a specific recipe. I think teaching the fundamental, transferable skills of cooking would be a lot more helpful
@@Noah-Lach there are some fundementals, but its for more experienced
I think the word "masterclass" means that you're taking a class from a "master" of their craft
"A class, especially in music, given by an expert to highly talented students"
So the problem here is that her level is too low to be of any indication of the quality of the masterclass
Joe Hut it doesn’t say limited to talented students
I got the gorden Ramsey masterclass ad before the vid lmao
me too
That’s very random
Aww me too ! Mine was in the middle of video lol
Same
I’m watching it now. The whole darn thing
There really isn’t a lot of salt in these foods and it’s a whole lot less than processed and fast food stuff. Also you can use unsalted butter tho if you’re really worried about it🤷🏾♀️
Yes that is correct if anyone has ever watched any of his shows especially Hell's Kitchen he uses unsalted butter in his restaurants because they have to do the salt flavoring themselves in order to control the final taste of the food
Unsalted butter is always better, that way you have more control over salt
@@FizzyCape thats so overrated imo, just taste before salting smh
@@arnekim1922 not really, whenever I make steak or chicken I always use unsalted butter just because sometimes regular butter adds to much salt to my food because I already put the amount I want on it so idk it’s just personal preference but I think unsalted butter is the best
It’s about technique not just learning recipes 🤦♂️
Gordon is great at entertaining, but he spews a lot of nonsense that people regurgitate.
millenials aren't smart enough to figure this out.
@@madthumbs1564 It's called having passion and knowledge for what you do, unlike some internet dwellers...
@@madthumbs1564 Gordon is not a fluke. He speaks out of passion.
@@madthumbs1564 nonsense? Wtf are you talking about? lmao
Lol she burned the first 2 dishes & still eats them 😂, & Butter and salt are not as unhealthy as you think
yeah salt and butter are good.
Yeah. Salt is not good in huge amounts and also the cheapest processed salt is garbage for your health. I'm not gonna comment on the butter because people that say butter is bad because all fats are bad should do some jailtime.
Avocado is good though, also, everything in large amounts is generally not good.
@@afreakusllama265 Avocado tastes like soap tho
@@marsin23 gotta look up the type of butter u buy, theres a golden churn butter brand is pretty healthy in small doses like maybe a spoonful? At least from wat i know butter seared salmon is better than processed oil like sunflower oil. But both has a distinctive taste to it, all in all quantity is everything. Follow a meal plan and weigh your intake. Otherwise i say shes pretty informative but not someone i'd take health advice from lmao frozen food
3:50 I almost had an aneurysm from watching the way she held her knife and the way she held the food as she was chopping. begging to lose a couple of fingers
My exact thoughts
I know
Bruh there even was a video about knife skills🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
Yesssss 😂🙌🏼🔪😂
@@reidpayne6539 she did say she just watched it but didn’t practice. I feel like she went into this masterclass with the wrong mindset, she wanted recipes but Gordon is teaching techniques.
04:37 Ramsay would have yelled at you for that toast :')
Depends on which show he's on at the time. Ramsay teaches a lot of misinformation so...
Gordon would have brought out a hockey stick and used the toast as a hockey puck
AND SHE STILL ATE IT LIKE WTF
You charred the bread. I can't see that tasting good lol.
Edit: Side Note, it may seem like a lot of salt and butter but that's very typically in all professional cooking. It's also not a lot compared to processed foods. Each to their own though. As for people using it. People typically choose courses that they're passionate about, not typically just on a whim. I've personally gone through different courses multiple times to really try to get better. That's me though lol.
I've been waiting for this video since you have shown behind the scenes on your vlog channel!
you always make the videos I need but never knew I needed in my life. THANK YOU
I’m really enjoying your channel. You have video ideas that I’m not seeing anywhere else. Keep up the good work!
I love your videos! Keep up the good work, you inspired me to start my own channel and I am finally starting to see some growth!
1st: the large knife doesn't seem to be sharp enough, can be seen at the shallot cutting, it hurts to watch using that.
2nd: PLEASE at least scratch that mega-burned layer from the toast so it doesn't seem like you've never been in the kitchen before...
3rd: either if those are chicken breasts or thights fillet, always start skin side down (or any other meat too), I think Chef Ramsay only mentioned it 3 times if not more..
Just a couple things I noticed and was a little bit weird.
I agree that she definitely would have benefited from a better and sharper knife; and the burnt toast was a bit scary.
That said, I'm very glad she was honest about her level of cooking. I was kinda expecting her food to look amazing due to having multiple tries before rolling the camera, so seeing the finished product not looking perfect got me to respect her for being honest with her viewers.
that would be a chef knife
Her knife grip is also way too far back which is also why she's having such a tough time with the shallots. It can also lead to the blade slipping and accidents. You should have your hand much further up and have the thumb and index finger stabilizing the blade.
You just have the most creative ideas Shelby! I aspire to that level of creativity! ❤️
very proud to see putting a lot of effort for the reviews.
I cook A LOT!!! watching you doing this video made me feel like I want to go there and teach you how to hold the veggies while you cutting them. but that's all who we are when we start learning. and your result is beautiful!!!
I love you and ur videos Shelby I never get bored of them!
I have been so excited waiting for this video... the vlogs were such a tease!!! You did so well and I LOVE YOUR CONTENT!!!!
Thank you!!
@@ShelbyChurch AHH that made me smile! Your videos and vlogs have been getting me through this quarantine!! :))
Nice job, Shelby! Appreciate the pros and cons/honesty of the review. I'm using your link to check out Masterclass (I've been interested in many of the ads I've seen on YT) through your affiliate link, and I also bought two Misen pans through the link on your video for their ad, so there ya go! I would use the recipes as a launching off point and then improvise from there :) the ability to cook and have people enjoy that food is so satisfying!
Been loving your vids recently, Shelby!

Gordons raspberry soufflé is incredible. Totally worth the effort plus the coulis is something you’ll use everywhere. BUT you need the high dollar mixer to fluff the egg whites- one of toughest thing I’ve ever tried in the kitchen

this seems super cool to do! thank you for showing us!
One of my favourite quotes by Lao Tzu goes like this; He who conquers others is strong. He who conquers himself is mighty. 💪💯 Stay mighty people.
I just imagine Gordon Ramsay going to his restaurant and yelling " IT'S F**KING RAW" whenever I hear his name. Why did I have to comment this? No idea yet I have.
its F**KING DELICIOUS!
it's Buuuuuuurned!
Great content Shelby , delivered super professionally and it feels real fresh ❤️👍
Great video!!! I kept seeing these ads (before I started paying for CZcams) I’m curious about the non cooking classes. I’d love to see another video about the non cooking ones!
I love watching your vlogs and feeling like I know the behind the scenes of this video. 😂😊
Thanks for the advice
Puck and the Chez lady are also great. Chris Voss etc. I think it's well worth it, it's my favourite learning style and a great way to spend lockdown. Good to see your take on it.
Thanks Shelby. Always love how your content is relevant. I’ve been wondering if it’s worth signing up. This review was awesome 👏
I hope this channel makes you millions. Your content is great, Shelby!
Tesla brought me to your channel about a year ago, your storytelling made me subscribe. I'm a long-time still photographer trying to learn video. Watching your content, and few others, provides me a great education for this medium. Keep up the great work! Regarding Masterclass...Chris Voss and his negotiation skills sold me. But his techniques do not work on my wife! Haha! Practice makes perfect!
Butter and salt are not inherently unhealthy! Both fat and a bit of sodium are necessary parts of our nutrition. These look good (well, maybe with a bit less of a blackened bagel in the first one, lol). Also, I think it might be helpful to take a basic knife skills class; I took one at our local cooking school with my mom when I was in college. I swear, nothing has made as much of a difference in the speed of my cooking; plus, it's much safer! Glad to hear a review of this because I keep thinking of getting it!
Loved your cooking vid.
ve been waiting for this video since you have shown behind the scenes on your vlog channel! looks awesome good appetitt youa re so ptretty stunning queen love you love your vlogs a highlight

Thanks for this!
Great effort Shelby...like everything ...its practice
This was an amazing video idea. I like your content.
Great personality. Very authentic.
Thanks for sharing your experience, Shelby. I found it particularly interesting because I have vacillated over whether or not to do the Masterclass subscription.
Would love to hear your thoughts If you end up doing any of the photography/videography classes, since those skill sets are square in your wheelhouse. My sense is that those kind of "creative" classes are probably more inspirational than they are actually instructive, but who knows.
Thanks again! Cheers.
This was such a fresh content for me . Really Enjoyed ❤️
I clicked as fast as received notification.😀 Your content is great shelby , I enjoy it alot.
A chef told me years ago the difference between chefs and home cooks was that chefs use much more salt and butter and that’s why their food tastes so much better.
Not really. I went to culinary arts school myself. Because of money and time not matching up, I have a couple of classes left for my degree, but I have a pretty solid foundation.
So there are a few things to consider. First, technique. While home cooks may learn a few techniques, there are a lot of things home cooks have never tried. As a self assessment, I thought I was a pretty good home cook before I went, but I'd never cooked sous vide, I'd never poached an egg, and my knife skills weren't all that great. Before I went to culinary school, I knew how to make a roux already, had made crepes and blintzes. I'd made soups and a couple of the mother sauces and fruit compote. But my skill set was pretty limited nonetheless.
What working in a restaurant does is gives you experience. You're cooking recipes over and over and over again. You become more efficient. Those standardized recipes are also tested and tried over and over again. There is a balance to dealing with flavors, of cooking foods that pair well together.
Does more salt and butter make things taste better? Absolutely. But there is a lot more knowledge in the mind of the best chefs who think on food in an entirely different way. That said, you don't need to go to culinary school to become a better cook. She's right about youtube having a lot to offer. Check out food wishes with Chef John. Check out Kenji Lopez-Alt, the stuff with Serious Eats, and his award winning "The Food Lab" where he separates fact from fiction when it comes to food science and home cooking. Go through all the stuff with Alton Brown's Good Eats.
And if you run across something you haven't done before - well, CZcams has made things all the easier.
Home chefs are scared to use more of those things because it’s unhealthy. But you wouldn’t even know that if you were dining out.
Shelby is creative, great job making a variety of videos :)
I’d love to see you try another type of class on there!
This is how to learn cooking from Gordon Ramsay without him yelling at you
Two of my favorite masterclasses are Neil Degrasse Tyson's on scientific process and communication and Chris Voss's on negotiation. I thought of Chris Voss's masterclass in a previous video where you had his book on negotiation that you said you didnt really connect with. His masterclass has some interesting connections between busieness and the art of negotiation. There are also so many great writing courses that I have been working through to hopefully maybe write some Medium stories myself as well.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
You are appreciated,
David
David Melia i love chris vosss! Neil’s class i had trouble comprehending though (kinda look for more connection as I dont have much background over the subject...)
You seem to like learning good stuff
wow Shelby, your production quality jumped a couple levels with this one! awesome job!
I would love to see a review of another MasterClass!
Frozen Trader Joe's meals have been my go-to quarantine meal too 😂 Bless Trader Joe's ✨
OMG LAUREN!!! Was not expecting to see you in this video! Love you Lauren!!
Great job Shelby, the presentation of dishes is very nice and the food looks very good. I'm italian so you can trust me hahah 😅💕
Love this! Gordan Ramsey has videos about how to cook salmon and eggs. I'm interested in the cinema and writing videos from masterclass. I hope this can be a series review! :D
I need a part two!!
love your style❤
Can you do another one? I love this video!
Shelby, thank you so very much for doing this video. The unlimited for a year is actually a very good deal for those of us who are REALLY into cooking. As to your mentioning about the salt and butter and your health concerns remember you can always cut back on ingredients, never use salted butter at home at all ( you can always add salt but you can't remove salt from the butter) and Gordon does promote healthy foods but let's face it, occasionally we all like to eat decadent meals the are just freaking awesome regardless of the health choices. 😁 So again this was really great, thank you. 🌞
I really appreciated this video
I’m trying to decide. I have been looking at the negotiation class or the Shonda Rimes class. I’d love to see you try those! Great video.
Great job thank you so much
if you want to get into cooking with something more beginner-friendly, bon appetit has a website called basically that i really like!! the recipes go step-by-step with little video clips and usually don't have a ton of weird ingredients
The food looks so good. You did so well
Hi Shelby, I just got an add for Gordon Ramsey’s master class that’s kinda weird lol, this looks so good, yum ty for sharing 😀❤️
The masterclass videos are in themselves extremely good; however, what many people taking some courses overlook, is that the videos are geared towards individuals who already have skill in the kitchen. One of the problems in many cooking courses, is that if you enter the course and you do not have the skills to keep up with with the presentation and instructions that the professor is attempting to teach you at a particular rate, you may be asked to leave the course and you will not get your money back.
So before someone partakes in these masterclasses, you should make certain that you have the rudimentary and basic skills to follow, and execute what is being asked of you, otherwise you may not get any enjoyment from the courses and instead have to trudge through the presentations.
Many people will just simply leave the courses and never return to the lesson, after they paid.
love your vids
I am so impressed, Shelby!! Poached eggs are so difficult to make
Good lord sweety, fold your fingers back when you cut stuff or you'll lose fingers. Watch a video how to hold a chefs knife. I don't want to see you go to a hospital
And get a sharper knife please.. That knife is just straight up dangerous😂

Hey Shelby watch more masterclasses and learn stuff. Then make a video's on your experience. Fun to watch.
I appreciate the videos that are less sell-outs.
Basically talking about you earning money on medium then paywalling the post.
"Masterclass: A class, especially in music, given by an expert to highly talented students"
No offense, but I think your cooking level is too low to give any indication if it is actually worth it or not. No offense, really.. But that shallot cutting part was painful to watch 😂😂😂
That toast though.
i understand everyone starts somewhere, but this is what i truly hate about people my age and all the friends i hang out with. they have 0 culinary skills and just eat out at dine in restaurants all the time and complain about not having any money.. i really shouldnt care this much lol.
Nadder Al-Habsi I’m 22 and by no means a master chef, but I can make something healthy and decently impressive out of most ingredients. Never thought I was exceptional until I went to university with a guy who legitimately didn’t know how to use a can opener because he only ate Tim Hortons and takeout.
The toast was burnt and she still ate it like what….😂
I liked her comments, really good and realistic, and funny. A real approach.
