Raeder said it best, "All our navy can hope to do is show they can die bravely."
The Axis as a whole wasn't ready to fight for another 5 years.
Germany was full of technological gaps, Italy needed to build up its army, and Japan needed to build up the infrastructure in Korea and Manchuria which was the whole point they invaded those countries to begin with.
@@bobmcbob49 Germany needed more oil the Japanese were oil critical from day 1 that's why there ships spent most of the war anchored.
The German army and airforce was one of the strongest in the world from 1938 to 1945, ww2 ended and the Germans had about 40,000 aircraft avalable and 40,000 damged needing repairs for a total of about 80,000.
The problem again was oil like the Me262 had 1,400 produced only 100 to 200 ever flew due to oil shortages, the Soviet finished ww2 with about 30,000 aircraft.
5 more years would have ment being invaded by Russia and missing the best oportunity to attack the Soviets, something like 80% of there comanders were killed or sent to prison.
The Japanese invaded Korea for two reasons, one it was needed for any land nation to invade them like Russia and China and it was the best way to invade China/Russia who had resorces they needed that's why they took Manchurian mainly for steel/iron ore they produced over 1,000,000 metric tons of steel every year from Manchuria alone and it peaked in 1942 at almost 4,000,000 tons.
But the Japanese only could produced about 3million barrels a year of oil and at it's best was 7 to 9million barrels after southern conquest, due to the damage done to the Dutch oil fields and also a combination of not enough oil tankers, no protection against the allies and the long distance they had to travel.
Germany could produce about 13million barrels a year at the start of the war and by 43 and 44 over 50million barrels.

@@danmorgan3685 spam submarines to cripple their imports? Building a large high seas fleet without a worldwide spanning empire is financial suicide
@@danmorgan3685 As 8jij pointed out, it wasn't economically feasible for the Kriegsmarine to fight the Royal Navy. You're right that it had to be dealt with somehow, but phantasizing about super battleship fleets that would take ten years to build wasn't the way to do that. They realized that with their state in the beginning of WW2 they could not engage the Royal Navy in open conflict and that's why they resorted to raiding merchant vessels supplying Britain. That's why they focused so much on submarines, which were great at raiding, but practically useless in fleet engagements. That's also why they avoided open combat with peer opponents whenever possible.
This was the only way to weaken their opponent without actually getting into massive battles ala Jutland which would've been far too risky.
"Let's starve them out with U-boats!"
Yes... because that worked the first time around...

Otto Von Bismarck the British were starving in ww1 like Germany
@@gabenewell3955 did they break? No. And they werent on the level of Germany. The British isles still had ships coming to port, whilst Germany had absolutely nothing coming in.
Otto Von Bismarck
It could have.
German military wanted 300 subs.
If Hitler had waited and built all 300 before starting it would have been much worse for the UK. As it was, the few he had was a serious problem.
That intro was so good lol. The German Navy did well but left unsupported by Hitler and the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht, they were unable to capitalize and deal a mortal blow to British shipping.
keep in mind that the pland they had in plan (plan Z) would have only left the German navy with a handful of warships that could theoretically go tow to tow, with some small naval units, and the battleships more or less dealing with older or lesser armed vessels, but even then, they would have still been outmatched and outgunned by the Royal Navy, and being able to outbuild them, if they would have gone with the plan it would have actually had made the situation easier for the allies since it would lower the priority in submarine construction (as it actually did when the pans were the first put in motion and stopped once the plan was canceled). If anything it would have made Germany have less resources that it needed, and would have caused a logistical nightmare (german logistics wasn't that good to begin with),even if you built a couple more warships the odds would still be in favor of the royal navy. And before you say that a couple more Bismarck would have defeated any ship the allies had, let me just remind you that the King George the V class battleship, has more than enough fire power and protection to withstand the Bismarcks fire power and to deal massive damage to it, with the Bismarcks only being faster than the British ship, but still, the KGV class, could mop the flore with the Bismarck class, as they actually did in real life and even the Scharnhorst class.
B-but the bismarck...

The Bismark was precisely why the German navy was so under powered for the price of it, they could've made 20 destroyers, 30 cruisers or even 3 normal sized battleships.

Churchill would disagree.
After the war Churchil admitted the U-boats were the only thing that ever really scared him, as they came very close to collapsing Britain's military production and economy.
Without the (still neutral) US shipping thousands of tons of materials to Britain, via convoys which Germany often avoided attacking, Britain would have been royally screwed.
@@a5cent even if the Germans managed to launch an effective convoy raiding and faced no US intervention, it still wouldn't create a German victory. They can't necessarily just win from those U-Boats alone to ensure naval domination. In terms of battleships and surface vessels the Italian navy was the biggest threat to the royal navy in Europe.
@Joel Schembri they lost 1 battleship...
They still had 7 left
@Joel Schembri you do know what loss means right? Even in your own comment you admit it's 1. Also "massively damaged" both brought back into service within seven months...
One was brought back to sevice within four thar is quicker than most US carriers could repair after one kamakse attack. Only one which we are counting as a loss (which technically it wasn't, as it was salvagable), was a ship out for the rest of the war.
And instead of degrading the brave people who died that day let's talk about this objectively it was a decisive victory it wasn't humiliating in slightest tbh, because if it was we would have to invent a new word for what pearl harbour was.
Honestly an excess of caution and lack of fuel were what did the Italians in, but their Navy wasn't bad. The Littorios were pretty sweet battleships given their mission; they weren't going to leave the Med. A shame about the frankly terrible ammo they were fed with especially later
@@MatthewJBrownyes exactly. And on the topic of ammunition, especially considering when they got good ammunition there groupings were insane they were straddling ships on there 2nd shot at ranges, that the the Iowa for example wouldn't even be able to aim at (this is due to the limit of both there rangefinders and crew ability).
I would have thought It was the French fleet of almost 200 ships....

They basically just carried out asymetric warfare but without the same level of advantages. I'm impressed by the way you get to the basic truth of the issues you cover. It is easy to over-complicate the story of the war in the Atlantic but it was essentially one of resources. By the time the Germans got enough u-boats at sea to cause the UK/US serious problems, those navies had created effective countermeasures. The German surface fleet was too small, and had insufficient fuel to maintain an effective at sea presence. This is just speculation and could go on for weeks and weeks, I have no good answer to if the us had not joined the war but I’m also not an expert, I’m a board ass high schooler with an internet connection, an iPad, and way to much free time(as you might be able to tell).

Wir lagen vor Madagaskar is a somewhat fitting song for this one if you know the lyrics. Great vid!
This a good video covering the basics of exactly what happened. Well done sir.
Cool video bro.
No seriously, I get really pretty psyched when I get a notification for a new video from you. You keep making good stuff. *:D*

This was super informative. Thank you for making this!
Love your videos, glad to see you're still posting
I have been hoping for something good to happen today.
Thank you
Hey mate! Amazing video!
I'd love to see a video on the advancements of jet technology throughout WWII for each major power!
Very epic video, would watch again
Love your history vids! Please keep making them!
Remember kids: the Atlantikwall failed to hold off the allies for even a day
You should do a parallel/ references series. Like Mobile Suit Gundam and its WW2 parallels.
Or Ace Combat Zero being a weird amalgamation of WW2 and the Balkan Wars
Gundam is interesting because the parallels are largely about macroeconomic and material shifts in addition to the obvious aesthetic cues and certain historical event parallels.
Zeon is essentially a thinly-veiled allegory to Imperial Japan, for one thing.

It makes perfect sense imo. For as useful ships can be they're still fairly limited, especially when your goal is capturing some lebensraum.

@@kimarous Yah but their profits sink with in the first year lMAO XD.
To be fair, the uboats carried some exceptional technology used after the war by the allies, at least in this regards the Kriegsmarine wasn't a total failure.
@@mandernachluca3774 Well yes some ships had good tech that proved to be useful to allies after the war. But the Germans simply didn't have resources to mass produce the tech and uboats on mass to have any major effect over the allies. As with most german stuff during world war II. Hans we have 1500 tiger tanks and they are powerful.Whats the Catch. The Americans have over 50,000 shermans and the Russians have over 70,000 t34s. Also the transmission is temper mental and has a tendency to break down over the slightest obstacle. Hmm sounds like a major flaw. Yah but Overall the Tiger is a great tank . Lol thats not my opinion I know it was a mixed bag design that was an opinion of fictious wheraboo lol. But again I am sure some of the tech was consider in development of post war era tanks for allies in facing off against the soviets or at least in combat readiness.
@@yagdtigercommander
Well, the Tiger was actually a good design.
The transmission did not break at the slightest obstacle, the fault was a gear ratio that apparently was to much for gearbox case, this failure was due to metallurgie, not the engineering.
Otherwise, the rest of the tank was pretty well thought through, even the infamous interleaved suspension has it's reason being applied to the tank concept.
To the Uboats, the type XXI was pretty much copied by the russins and the americans and several other countries, in form of conventional diesel electric uboats or even nuclear uboats. The essence of the design was a mixture of a big accumulator rack, a snorchel system, dehumidifier, oxygen supply systems and CO2 capturing systems. Than there was a redesigned water system, to prevent unwanted malfunctions when using the toilet (search for the loss of a german uboat due to a to complicated toilet draining system) and new fire control systems, as well as retractable fins, wich decreases resistance.
The funny thing is, engineering is nothing that wins a war, it merely gives you a tool to win a war, you still have to use it appropriately ( as demonstrated with the Tiger ;D, wich wasn't used as intended and therefor often lost it's armor and gun advantage).
For other ingenius ideas of the germans, search for the roots of the radar (yes, the germans invented the radar and they had a slight edge to the british going into the war, the british however successfully developed a magnetron, wich the germans only got a hold due to a shot down bomber in 1943 or 44), or search for the Walter engine and the uboat that used it, or what about the capabilities of the Panzerfaust 150 with was later on copied by the russians to build the RPG 2, or you cold look up the recoil less anti tank guns of the germans (in comparsion to the allies anti tank rifles).
There are a lot of interesting developments of the germans, wich accurately portrayed their ability to make something out of almost nothing (wooden aa rockets, coal liquifying to get fuel, woodgas generators or
systems like the "Schräge Musik", aircraft diesel engines).
You know your surface navy is having a rough time when Oscar the Cat is the most successful member of the Kriegsmarine
You are brilliant man!
The intro dope as usual. Great job
I imagine the fuel situation for the Navy would have been fairly dire as the Army had a rough time with their own supply.
Lesson: don’t build a supership when your navy has no good ships
Its about time you upload ive been waitin
Love your content, dont change your humor!
0:57 The Japanese were actually the one nation that played the LEAST with battleships in a carrier war. They only commited them as the main striking force at Leyte, Okinawa and briefly at Guadalcanal in 1942. in all those cases when the air arm was not available in sufficient numbers. By comparrisson every other major navy utilized their battleships far more frequently.
So is that why yamato and musashi the two biggest battleships ever built. Got beaten to death by American aircraft carriers?
@@chaosacsend9653
Kinda yeah. If you no longer have a naval air arm because it's currently sitting at the bottom of the Pacific and your default is to send in battleships when the air arm's not there.
