Check out Tom Scholz Bass line for his classic song
"More Than A Feeling" from Boston debut album.
Played on a Gibson EBO with a Fender Jazz pickup and played it with a pick. This bass line is both a lesson in rhythmic and melodic bass playing. Check out the guitar solo section where the bass is constant movement and while still outlining the chord progression.

Wow! As a Bass player of 40 years, I have to say, That’s the best sounding Rock Bass sound to me. I grew up learning to play from my Rush albums, wearing them down. Lol. But honestly, to me, This is the Holy Grail of Bass sounds. Well done, Tom Scholz!😊🤘
Isolated bass lines are a godsend when learning songs 🙏
Picked bass is underrated
I wish bass parts were more prominently volumized. Why do they (many artists) turn down the volume so low on the bass on so many songs that you need special equalizers and headphones to hear it?
People tend to kiss the asses of those paying them
Brilliant !!!
That's the kind of bass sound I like. Bassy and pulsating. I always preferred flats and fingers, although I'm not sure that's what he's using. Pretty impressive for a guitarist.
Sounds like flatwounds with a pick, he's using a Gibson EB-0, recorded direct in.
He plays it like a guitar player
@@joedecker3900he uses a pick, that sound can only be achieved on a humbucker wired in series with flatwounds.
@@f2detaboada Back in 1975-76?
@@f2detaboada Of course he plays with a pick, pretty obvious. Just don’t sound like a traditional flat sound. But it does sound killer.
It sounds like and may be the original track played by Tom Scholz
it is indeed!
sure it is, it's damn hard to get such an amazing sound. So glad that we have the stems from jammit and rockband
Cool iso track! Cleanly played! Even loved the punch-in.
Love this, did Tom play the bass lines ? I assume he did, fits so well with the guitar parts
Yeah he did. He played most of the guitar, bass, and organ stuff on the first album. The only songs I can think where he didn't play everything were in Foreplay/Longtime, Something About You and Let Me Take You Home Tonight where other members played (mostly referring to Barry Goudreau on Longtime).
Bass like it’s supposed to sound in rock music: bassy, thumps, etc. None of that slap or pluck stuff. No pick playing but finger picking to get true bass sound from a string. Most did it this way, fortunately.
Definitely picked for the most part.
Sounds to me like a Gibson bass
Tom did use a Gibson bass for this part.
It's a late 50's EB-0
Dead sounding bass.
Love it
Huh?
