  • This song from Boston's eponymous debut album is a masterpiece of the Classic Rock genre.
    The prelude and the song together create the perfect mix between Prog, acoustic Folk and Arena Rock.
    Fran Sheehan plays the bass on "Foreplay" and Tom Scholz plays on "Long Time". See if you can hear the differences between the two styles.
    There is a wealth of musical phrases and bass vocabulary throughout the song "Long Time". Pre Chorus sections and Outro are worth listening to and learning.

    3:16 I don't play bass, not even a huge classic rock fan, but this run, holy shit it's good.

    Yes, Sheehan has a better tone and better rhythm. Scholz is all over the place with his rhythmic placement - sometimes on the beat, other times before the beat. You really hear he is not a bass player when it is isolated like this.

    Man, Tom really dug the double 16th 8th note figure. It's everywhere on this track and the entire album for that matter

    I'm trying to make a thorough and detailed transcription for my students and I can't tell if he has his bass tuned down to Eb standard, or if he has a D string on the bottom, aside from the C1 at the end of Foreplay, which I'm sure they layered in on another take so I'm not concerned about that. Any bassists have any insight or opinions? I've been digging around online and there doesn't seem to be a consensus and most people believe it is in E standard, but it can't be because there are Eb1's in the Longtime verse section.

      @RobWickline Many years ago, I transcribed this bass line from the isolated bass track, and yes during the Foreplay intro there are a few Eb (which were either punched in or the bass was tuned down for the recorded performance) there is also, as you mention in your comment, a low C. As for the verses, an open E is being played at the end of every second bar. HOpe this helps :-)

    Beginning 5:34, the bass line sounds like it inspired another song or riff from some recent composition. Does anyone know what that recent composition is? I'm trying to figure it out, but I'm at a loss.

      I hear a little bit of James Jamerson on his playing. ghost notes, and chromatics

      Hmm, I don't hear it? I even clicked on the settings icon on the lower right corner of the screen and slowed the tempo down by 25% and then sped it up by 25% to see if it "triggers" something, but my ear didn't associate it with anything else, (at least that I know of:). Of course I've been up since 4:30 am this morning. LOL

    Does anyone kind of have an aversion to a bass being played with a pick. I know some players have to, in order to play at speed for certain parts. I noticed this bass is being played with a pick.

    • @markhooper9052
      @markhooper9052 Před 4 lety

      Fran Sheehan definitely did not play with a pick live - watch the 78 giant stadium you tube or a more recent 2012 get together with a few old members. so I doubt he did in studio either. he was a wild man on the bass.

      Tom Sholtz played all the bass parts in the studio on this. Hey played most everything. Not sure about the drums. Im just not a fan of the sound of a pick on bass. I like the fullness that plucking the strings with your finger gives.
