Can You Drink Water When You Eat?

  • When it comes to health, prevention is better than cure, so it’s important to know and avoid some harmful everyday habits. Can drinking water when you eat actually do you any harm, or is it just a health myth? Some experts say that eating and drinking at the same time prevents you from losing weight, while others say water dilutes our stomach acid. Let’s find out what drinking simple water as you eat can actually do to you.
Some people think that drinking water while eating decreases the acidity in the stomach. So if gastric acid gets diluted, it won't be able to digest your food thoroughly enough.
The digestive process starts before you even put the fork in your mouth. When we’re just thinking about our future meal, saliva starts getting secreted in the mouth. In fact, water doesn’t just enter the stomach from a glass, it’s also in the food you eat. For example, oranges, along with raspberries and pineapples, are 87% water. Research showed that some foods can, in fact, decrease acidity levels in the stomach, but they go back to normal really quickly.
There are lots of advantages to drinking while eating. It helps soften and break down solid food so that your body can absorb the nutrients better. Water also prevents constipation since it softens the stool.
It’s been proven that drinking just 2 cups of water raises both male and female metabolic rates by 30%. And when your metabolism is increased, this gives you a much-needed boost in energy. Water helps with the absorption of nutrients. It dissolves minerals and vitamins, along with other nutrients you get from your food. Water is vital for flushing toxins out of your body through your urine and stool.

    SUMMARY
-Some people think that water pushes food that’s still in undigested into the intestines.
-Water, unlike food, doesn't stick around in the stomach for 4 hours. It goes through the chewed food very quickly, moisturizes it, and leaves the stomach way before the food does.
-If the stomach “feels” that it can't digest something, it pumps out more enzymes to increase the acidity of the liquid inside. Even if you drink half a gallon of water, it won't change the acidity.
-Liquid leaves the body faster than solid food, but it doesn't influence the speed of digestion.
-Having something to drink with your meals is harmless and can even do you some good.
-Water helps regulate your body temperature, lubricates your spinal cord, tissues, and joints. Water boosts your physical performance.

If you're trying to lose weight, then drink while you eat, but if you're trying to gain weight, drink after you eat if you can, but if you really need to drink something, then take a sip....

Never complicate your life, by always thinking, whether you should do it or not. If you feeling thirsty while eating, it means your body is asking for water, and you should drink it. I believe,we human beings have made our lives complicated by analysing each and everything happening with us. Because of analyzing everything too much, we have probably stopped enjoying whatever we do, including eating.

I'm a health coach and have been opposed to the whole no water while eating thing for a long time. I don't think we should guzzle a quarter gallon of water while eating, but I think a moderate amount of water can help to moisturize the food and actually aid in digestion. In fact I think if your meal has too little water, your digestion can be somewhat stagnant just like mud doesn't flow down a river as well as clean water.

Meryem Pink if we use normal water, not chilled it doesn't affect your digestive system so badly .... But it does even a little .... It just affect our body just by accumulating toxins in your body... Bcoz there are only two ways to break down food, one is digestion and second is fermentation but when u drink water just after ur meal.... U meal get fermented in your stomach in return you will get toxins from that food instead of nutrients ... Thats how it affects your body.... The affects of the toxins vary on different body types .... Like constipation, premature grating of hair, dull skin, ulcers in stomach, may be even cancer, gad, bp, and diabetes and lot more ......

Raj Kamal my dear its not direct water... You are allowed to drink water in that way if u consider everything as water ... You are allowed to take juice, curd/yogurt, milk just after meal it doesn't effect your digestion.... Even it will boost your digestion .... Please not water affects digestion but just after meal ... During the break down of food u need water as much as u want to drink.. I.e. after 1 to 1 1/2 hours depends on ur life style if you do hard work you will get your juices released in your stomach just after 45 mins but if you do sitting job/not much physical work out.. It will take one and half hour to release juices to break down food... After this time you need water now u can drink water as much as u want ... Problem solved....

Listen to the smart doctors and common sense. Drinking water while eating dilutes the stomach acid so that it is unable to digest your food. It sits there and then causes reflux. This video has false info.

best thing is to drink enough , 15 -20 minutes before eating. the actuall cause is that when we usually drink we hav a so called "Magens-Straße" (German for Stomach Street) that allows water fastly bypass the stomach and enter the Small Intestine. the problem now is that when we eat the last part of the Stomach (Pylorus) constricts while we are eating to not allow undigested foo enter the duodenum (first part of Small Intestine). Now when we drink water the water can not easily by pass the stomach anymore and stays together with the food in the stomach making it harder for the Muscles of the stomach to contract and together with the gastric juice to digest the food. So small amounts of water actually help digestion and especially drinking before the food. everythingelse causes increased stress on the body (increased gastric juice secretion and more gastric muscle contraction) meaning we need more Blood supply to the stommach, which will make us sleepy and might even cause cramps.
So drink before, or small sips while you drink, and dont overeat and overdrink it all causes extra stress on your stomach and we love our body so give him only what he can handle ;)

It doesn't really matter, because the enzymes function as a catalyst.
What's important is the molecular ratio of enzyme to substrate (eg pepsin to preotein) and not enzyme to total food mass or volume.

Hey Bride Side, my maternal grandmother had this habit of drinking too much water. At the age of about 72 we noticed that her muscles hung so low they looked weird. We talked to her doctor and they said her habit of drinking too much water had caused this. Drinking too much water she flushed out most of the salts from her body and many other things. I too have this habit of drinking too much water. When I am thirsty, a glass of water is never enough. I drink at least a litre or two of water at a time and I drink more 6 - 7 bottles (1 litre) of water a day. Particularly in summer days my water consumption goes near about 10 litres. I know that because I have to fill up my 5 litre water bottle thrice before I go to sleep at night. My doctor is rather encouraging about this habit of mine. I believe the facts you present have helped in many ways in my daily life. So Could you do a video on how much water is enough for us? Is there a limit or we can drink as much water as we can?

The body is naturally intelligent. It knows when to send signals for water. Drink when thirsty the amount according to the size of your stomach. Only you know when enough has been consumed. Notice the awful feeling when forcing more food or liquid when full? Nothing is wrong with sipping small amounts of water in between thirst signals from the body. Okay. Be safe👌
