  • Locating leaks from shower cubicles can be hard to find, especially when you have black mould and old tiling.

    I kept getting a leak through the ceiling from the shower upstairs, just adding a new bead of sealant over the top of the old stuff didnt last long, so in the end had to dig out all the old sealant and cleaning up the area well and pumped in a lot of good quality sealant around the tray, it hasn't leaked since in over 2 years. The old initial sealant was probably in service for over 10 years and had failed, way before I'd moved in.

    Ah, that reminds me of water dripping down my hall wall. Puzzled me as the leak was only occasional. Turned out to be the shower above, the waste pipe drain seal was loose and a gap appeared allowing water to escape, but only when some was stood in the shower putting weight on it !

    I generally enjoy DIY but without doubt, using silicone sealant is my least favourite job.

    A big no no is to silicone the inside of the enclosure frame, as it means any water trapped within the frame will stay there. Silicone outside of the enclosure only.

    • @dereton33
      @dereton33  Před 2 měsíci +4

      NO THAT IS WRONG. Silicone outside means water remains trapped inside the enclosure.

      @@dereton33it’s not wrong. I literally work for a manufacturer and work with the designers as a product engineer. Check the enclosure instructions next time you have chance. Silicone behind wall channels vertically and along outside of enclosure only, never silicone the inside at the base, as this will lead to trapped moisture within the aluminium extrusions that can’t drain down back into the tray.

      @@dereton33 He is 100% correct, you virtually never should silicone the inside of the frame for the exact reasons he states, water will always get into the frame extrusion and when you silicone the inside of the frame you leave the trapped water 2 options, escape outwards if no silicone has been installed (wrongly) or it builds up and up in the extrusion and eventually it will find a way out even if it is out the very top.
      You are 99.9% of the time only ever meant to silicone the outside of a frame with non on the inside. That way any water that gets into the aluminium extrusion can escape out the frame and back into the shower tray.
      As the other person said, read any manufactures installation manual, they can easily be accessed online for most makes for free via websites, you will see you are wrong to have any silicone on the inside of the frame.

    Shower? What luxury... wash with a flannel in a basin: wash down as far as possible then up as far possible - then you wash possible!

    Just a quick question, does tile grout inside the shower enclosure need to be sealed ?
    I seem to have to clean the grout every few months, so was wondering should it have been sealed on insulation ?
    Cheers
    Vince.

    • @dereton33
      @dereton33  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Unfortunately all silicones get black mould along with tile grout, so I use the spray bleach shown.

  • @paulw4904
    @paulw4904 Před 2 měsíci +1

    You shouldn’t seal the inside of shower cubicles….all manufacturers instructions will tell you so!
    Shower cubicles are not water tight & when the water gets in, it needs to get out (obviously running inside the tray & not on the outside)…. So when it’s trapped the mould forms & eats away the silicone & causes it to leak.

    • @dereton33
      @dereton33  Před 2 měsíci

      I believe in the opposite, stop the leak from the inside. The water will force its way out to the floor without it. Mastic on the outside is like sticking plaster on the outside of a wound. Stop the leak at source. Forget what the manufactures tell you. This shower has been fitted for nearly 20 years and this is the first leak and it is the tiling inside that is the problem. The grout has gone.

    Get those leaks fixed asap people, I’m currently dealing with a collapsed ceiling in my hallway caused by a leak from the water inlet pipe that supply’s my toilet. To be fair we didn’t know it was leaking because the floor in the bathroom hadn’t been wet, must’ve been dribbling down the pipe and straight through the floor and had apparently accumulated over quite some time. The leak has been fixed now but my ceiling has about a 3 foot square hole, we only decorated just before Christmas too 😢 it could’ve been worse I suppose, at least no one was underneath it when it fell - hole thing just dropped in one and broke into smaller pieces when it hit the floor, it was pretty heavy too 😱😨🙄🫣

      My friends bath fell through the floor into the kitchen, the pipe must have been leaking for a while, thank God nobody was in the kitchen at the time! I did ask her if anyone was in the bath so we did have a chuckle😂
