Unrelated comments to the pontoon video but I’m watching from Alberta, Canada. Just bought a boat and was looking for detailing tips. Just want to say dude. You’re charismatic, know your shit, integrity and humble. You will succeed in whatever you do. Love watching your videos man. It’s just not your knowledge but your insight that separates you from everyone else. You are the franchise.
Wow thank you so much for this comment! :) I really appreciate it!
If it means anything man, you hit the nail on the head on that video about not focusing on the money and money comes when you focus on the client and your craft. I work in a consulting company where we compete for multi million dollar projects…..how do they choose when everyone is super competitive in price etc? We are humans it really comes down to can they trust you to deliver. They will even pay more for that. You have that in spades bro. You are no different from our top guys that win those massive contracts. Can’t wait to see where you land 5 years from now. Only way is up for you!
Wow thank you so much! That means a lot to me!
I feel like it should be noted that you made it look EXTREMELY easy. That nice finish will only come with time and experience and after a few sketchy screwups. But the satisfaction and sense of accomplishment of seeing your entire body covered in soot but precious metal just reflecting like a diamond. Good shit man.
Thanks brother!
That was a awesome video those pantoons came out perfect great job Drake really looking forward to the next video I learned so much thanks!!!
Great job! I've been polishing semis for 7 years in alberta and still learned new and helpful things with this video. Really good job man
Thanks man! I appreciate the support!
Want to polish a boat in Alberta? Where are you located?
You're an animal dude!!! I threw in the towel on boats and RV's after about 20 years detailing; especially solo... So my hat goes off to you! Still love seeing the results in the hands of the right detailer though. Keep killing it man!
Thanks bro!! It’s hard work but it’s very rewarding!
Great video! I did the insides of my toons earlier this Spring. That was my practice, but I did it exactly as Drake is explaining, and it works. Be ready for the tough work. I’ll tackle the outside of my toons sometime this fall, once it cools down.
Yea it’s a project!!
Just curious why you did all the hard work and labor on an area you hardly see first?
Wouldn’t you want the hard work and the outside of the toons done first??
Just curious that’s alll, Kudo’s to you for tackling the job yourself!!!
Did you use Sharkhyde once you polished them?
Not sure why Im watching I don’t have a pontoon boat
Yeah same bro, only thing I polish is my knob.
Lol, I'm literally asking myself the same question.
Excellent video as always. Thanks a lot for not talking me out of it!
You summed up my experience in the first minute of this video 😂. That accidental kickback can cause some damage to the skin! Yes, wear that respirator too! Aluminum dust isn’t good for you. Do it somewhere away from your normal walking path too. I got it all over my entry floor rug from my shoes, and it spreads all over the house. It’s a lot of work. Great video!
😎👍🏻
Man I wished you would have made this video a month ago. I attempted to polish my pontoons and there is no good video out there. This was awesome and those pontoons look phenomenal. Good job bro 💪💪
Thanks brother!
Super shiny and they look great...welcome to maintaining that look forever.
Thank you for sharing drake a lot of people don't realize it takes time to restore the pontoon metal that is why we have to charge more to get it done and our chemicals cost a lot
Yes it was quite a job for sure!! Lots of time and money in products and labor
I have polished many motorcycles with 0000 steel wool and a metal polisher with great results , This is an astronomical job and the work you have done is impressive. I inherited a pontoon boat and your suggestion are good but I do not want to spend time polishing to a glass finish knowing in just a few days in the water it will go back to a dull finish . The main thing for me is to limit the growth under the floats with a coating during the summer months in the water .
Great point! Yeah it’s time consuming for sure! Thanks for following along!
Man, I’m so happy you didn’t get injured!!! Kind regards from Barcelona
Thanks bro! I’m glad too 🤣
Lol 😂😆 I love how you look around to see if anyone seen it. Been there
I always prepped my aluminum whether it was wheels tanks etc. with wheel acid way faster and easier
I just went through the same process on bronze port lights. Only paint remover took off the lacquer layer. Nice work Drake.
Thank you!
Awesome video. Wish I would have watched this first. Oh well I will follow for the next pontoon athon My only question is you didn’t acid wash first with shark hide cleaner. Do you recommend that BEFORE you start buffing after you remove the old shark hide?
I like how you show a reality mistake and glad you aren't embarrassed. Great video dude!
Thanks! Lesson learned here! Ha!
Damn that's a ton of polishing, I Polished a swingarm on dirtbike years ago and said never again. Great job, Be safe!
Looks great! I have an Airstream that needs this treatment..
Absolute miracle worker man! Have a marine detailing company up here in Pittsburgh. Learning more and more from all your videos. Keep it up!
Awesome! Thanks for watching!
@@DrakesDetailing any tips for working in the sun and compound drying too fast on the boat and not being able to be worked with the buffer?
I use Makita myself because it's one of the few platforms that use soft-start motors. But they go on for years and years with brush replacements on a routine and keeping the motor cleaning.
That’s right!!
@@DrakesDetailing By the way, Drake, really nice work on those pontoons. I bet that boat just slicks through that salt water.
Nice job on the toon and the video I've done a few try to talk my customers into acid washes it's dirty and a lot of work I'm gonna do mine this fall using g your process I usually use 3m heavy cut with a wool pad and the come out pretty good and don't have near the hours and people are generally happy but want to do better even the few I do a year .....thanx
Thanks! 😎👍🏻
And some people wonder why it costs what it does to have this done. THAT'S A LOT OF WORK AND YOU BETTER KNOW WHAT YOUR DOING. 👍💯
Whats the going rate for this type of service?
How much would you charge for that?
I'd charge a minimum of one thousand
That was hilarious when the buffer got away from you. I love the way you look around to see if anyone saw you. Too funny.
Haha 💯💯
I’ve given up on trying to make things look near perfect. A gallon of aluminum cleaner from Napa and 20 minutes time gets them good enough for me. I used to be okay spending hours or days cleaning and detailing but as I’ve aged I’ve realized how precious time is and decided to change my priorities and where I spend my time.
They look great though!!!
Hey, whatever for you! Thanks for watching 😎
Looks amazing! Awsome job!
I have a older boat with a pretty aggressive non skid diamond pattern with heavy oxidation. Can I use a heavy cut wool pad to remove the oxidation the compound I’ll be using is presta heavy cut. The pad is a black and white presta.
Do I remove all the trim with the buffing wheel or should I do that ahead of time ??
I love polishing aluminum. It’s so satisfying. I always take before and after photos for sure. It’s very satisfying for me tho. It’s a OCD drug.
I’ve polished plenty of sets of aluminum wheels but I’ve been working on detailing a pontoon the past couple days and I got into the logs today and I figured it was just like any other aluminum polishing but when I got into it and about a 1/4 done with one after and acid treatment and 4 hours in I said man something gotta give here. Needless to say I had no idea about the shark hide and was basically having to burn through it to get to the metal, so thank life lessened learned, don’t do something thinking you know who’s to do it with research first lol. Thank you sir for this video and saving me even more of a damn headache. Off to oreillys I go in the morning😂
Haha! Live and learn I always say!
@@DrakesDetailing dude I’m just glad I finally decided to look up your video about it or else I would’ve been there for days!! I was wondering why my hydrofluoric acid didn’t really affect the aluminum very much and not from halfway down at all😂
Thats a good one, your good at illustrating what not to do.
Thanks brother! 🤘
I learned a thing or two from this video and you even owned up and showed your mistake of bumping the trim, but I really would like to know what was done to rectify it?
How do you get all the black particals and fog off the pontoons before the buff? Even with using the green wheel and bar, I still have Fog from the wheels.
Dam man that was awesome. Those pontoons look ridiculous ha! I didn't know they could come that clean. Way to go 💪🙌💯💯
Thanks bro 😎
That was great to watch. My pontoon has what looks like corrosion on the rails. Is that something detailers can fix?
Sometimes corrosion can be cleaned up with a wire brush, but it depends on what part of the metal it’s on. If it’s the aluminum rails, I’m thinking of, once you remove the corrosion it’s very hard to refinish them to look good again. After you’re done, cleaning the corrosion off, you will just need to hand buff with metal polish to try to get back with any sort of shine.
Do you do the inside of the toons? It's purely for cosmetic reasons correct?
Hi I have a boat from the 70s that has been sitting unfortunately I bought wool pads for the DA not the rotary, can I just use the DA from start to finish with sanding with abralon, then starke level r and then menzerna 400 and then jescar all with the DA?
Few other Tips and Tricks
Always Polish bottom to top.
you dont need to rake the buff as much as youd think.
Lay on the Compound, Go up into your area with compound then start from the bottom again.
to add more clarity to your piece ALWAYS SAND. stop at 600 to 800 like he said.
To remove any leftover compound aka black lines, use Mineral Spirits.
Also Polishing aluminum is your protectant. DO NOT ceramic coat it. it is guaranteed to dull and fade in no time. just wash it well and it will stay polished for a very long time.
Thanks bro!
I’m not a professional metal polisher ha
Thanks for the positive feedback
Will spraying 2-3 coats of clear lacquer seal the ‘toon better than shark hide?
BTW, outstanding job!
Great job looks awesome
And this is why face shields are so important! As much as they suck they do really help
I use to leave the drive wheels on the truck and work them over. Not any more after hitting the hub and yanked buffer out of my hands then hit me in the face. I dont lock trigger down just for that reason, but some how it was. It didnt stop until wrapping cord around itself unplugging from strip. All my cutters are 6,000 Rpms and polishers are 3500 lower.
Dangerous stuff!
Looks great! What type of sealer do you apply to the toons after you polish them? I did this but after being in the water for a boating season they do not look the same.
Unfortunately that’s what happens… this is a yearly thing you’ll have todo to maintain the shine.
I nearly took my head off cutting aluminium with a 9 inch angle grinder once, scared me so much I decided that work experience in that area was not worth dying for
amen!!1
My worst was when I decided to load my pad with the rouge block laying on the ground. It caught the edge and threw the block into my knuckles. It happened so fast I thought I cut my finger(s) off. I was a 19 year old idiot at the time, so that is the excuse I’m going with. After I pulled my hand out of my pocket and realized I still had all my fingers, I was quite pleased and far more careful.
very nice man! looks fabulous.
Thanks for the kind words!
Bro absolutely killed my Nautic star when he and his buddy did it in my driveway. I would recommend him to anyone!! Walked out and got blinded by it when it hit the sun lol. Price was really fair too. Tipped some and a monster if you remember me man lol. Glad business is still good! Heard your out of town now. I hope that’s not the case
Thank you! I am moving to California next week for about a year or 2! But my company here is still doing boats! We partnered with tsb detailing
@@DrakesDetailing Hey, as long as they do the same or better work man I’ll give them a shot! Hope the new state works out! Surprised they are letting someone from Florida in lol.
@@DrakesDetailing why you moving to that awful God forsaken state.
I polished mine out using Mothers, then protected with Sharkhide…..came out beautiful.
Nice 🔥😎
Thanks for this information. The video is very informative and makes me wonder if I really want to do it myself, or not. Do you have a video on how you tackle the back of the pontoons, especially the brackets, inside and out?
No problem! No this is the only video I have like this
@@DrakesDetailing how do you suggest polishing the brackets on the back of the pontoons? I'm hoping you have discovered a way to make it somewhat easier to polish the insides of the brackets.
The intro brings back memories, I've wacked myself in the face before just like that.
The looking around afterwards was priceless . . . . did anybody see me do that?
Nice detail in the video
Keep in mind, that beard is going to let some of the bad stuff by
Dustin at EZN is awesome! Their software is definitely amazing!
Yep!
Eastwood greaseless compound works like sandpaper but on a buffing pad.
Thanks for the tip!
I feel as if a cylindrical pneumatic buffer may have been quicker, not sure if your familiar with it? also there is a product called green ox that is tacky but as it heats up gets real smooth and creamy so it polishes out heavy oxidation and can possibly save you a step between your cut polish and finish. I polish Bright work on corporate aircraft, and have also done some pretty heavy cutting on the NASA guppy at Ellington field Houston. I like the tip of using paint remover, we seal our metal with a molecular adhesive and can be a pain in the butt to polish out when its time to remove oxidation again. Thanks for the insight.
You may be right! I don’t do a lot of aluminum, so I definitely dont know everything
I gave you a like simply for showing how you almost took off your face. Been there done that. Life is real, keep it real and don’t fake it!
Amen!! Ha thanks, glad I earned your like!
great video i reference it when ever i buff alum. heres my question. I have a heavily stained aluminum jet boat. Would aluma brite spary be a bad move before buff?
Hey bro! Unfortunately, I’ve never used that stuff so I could not tell you one way or another unfortunately.
Small test spot it is . Thank you !
Great job and great finish shine.
Thanks! 🔥🔥
Great content. Really appreciate the upclose shot at the end so the detail eyes can see what it can look like without sanding. Because 98.9% of clients will only want what you did... unfortunately 😔
Thanks!! Really appreciate it!
Looks good, nice work
Thanks 👍 😎
Where can you get that compound from
Great Video ...my fresh water pontoon is 5 years old in good shape with minimal markings just dirt and grime but I'd like to shine to chrome state. Question should I start with the deep cut pads(Orange/Gold) or would the 2nd cut pads(Green/Rouge) be ok to start with? Thanks, also where can I get the Polishing Pad for the last step?
Hey man! It’s been a while since I’ve done this to be honest ha, if would start out with the 2nd step pad if it’s not that bad
I bought the kit and tried with green/second step but no good result, changed to orange and all good. my pontoon is 4 years old and I wanted same mirror shine .
Great work so I subscribed 😊
Thanks! I appreciate the support! 🔥
Great video and great job on that pontoon.
Would a dual action polisher work well on that last step ?
No, I tried and it didn’t really work
Blue premium polish from dura coat, the best
Looks great !
😎🔥💪
It is dangerous for sure. The first time I tried to rake a buff, I shot the rake across the floor and smacked my ankle with the back of the polisher. Great video. I have a 27' triple pontoon next week to polish for a local marina. And yes, hire a professional detailer! It's a dirty job and it sucks which is why the price is high. LOL
💯💯💯
Thanks for the content. Would you say Sharkhide is necessary if the pontoons will only ever be in fresh water?
That’s actually a good question, I don’t quite know the answer myself. It seems like saltwater would eat it away too fast
Very detailed tut, hey what do you think about those air powered linear polishers?
Hey man! I’ve actually never used one
Hey Drake, we have a business in wisconsin and have a few toons planned including our own, great video! I was wondering what foam pad you used, I know you parted ways with marine detail supply, and the link wasn’t working in your description, as always thanks for the help and all your videos !
I like the orange lake country foam pad!
@@DrakesDetailing thank you sir! Greatly appreciated! Truly appreciate all your videos and everything you do!
My knees are hurting after watching you stand up and down about a million times 😂
Yep! That’s about right ha
That's what she said too.
I had a polishing business about 20 years ago. I made a killing fixing what others messed up.
💯💯
I have a question for you how are you able to finish the tunes underneath the jack stands supports?
You either let the customer know you can’t get to them because that’s where the jackstands are or you could have the marina lift the bottom of the jackstands either a little bit forward or a little bit back in order to touch up those areas that were not able to get touched up
And that's why my Dad always said about boat ownership, "it's better to have a friend with a boat".
Amen! Ha
Exactly. Like the saying goes, the two happiest days in a boat owners life is the day he buys his boat, and the day he sells it.
So polishing boats is new to me but polishing aluminum and stainless is something my dad taught me and when you use those buffing wheels start from the bottom so it carry’s your compound to where your headed keeps you from chasing it down if that makes any sense. I might be wrong though
Nope you’re right! Been corrected a few times ha I’m not a metal polishing expert ha
@@DrakesDetailing you work boats and paint a lot better though I just tried jescar and I love it but have you ever tried liquid ice extra cut made by Norton
What brand polish would you recommend for fiberglass? Boat is a 2019 Cape Horn 32 very lightly oxidized.
Hey Kevin! i recommend Stake Yacht Cares Line of Compounds, polishes and sealants. Give them a try! Here’s a link to where you can buy them
drakesmarinedetailsupply.com/
The buffer jump will get you every time!!
💯💯💯
What is a price per foot you charge on a pontoon boat?
Allotttta work. I remember one of our finishers having really long hair and ol makita found the end of it and wound her whole wig up tight. It was the kind of early morning brutality that somehow cured my hangover. Poor girl.
Dang… that’s crazy! I was training a female a few months ago and warned her about that! Crazy!
Awesome job
Thanks bro!
epic work bro
Thanks 😎💪🔥
that's an awesome job with lots of elbow grease!!!
Thanks 👍
Your pontoon kit and tomorrow I am doing the final process. I am on fresh water late seal that to Wes to keep them working nice for a longer time. I really don’t like shark because it will fail after a few years.
To each their own!
@@DrakesDetailing I really like your product and followed your steps and sanded my pontoon 80 grit, 120, 220,320,420,600. How do I get in hard to reach area's? What product do you recommend for putting on after I get done? Thanks in advance, Sorry last message made no sense. lol Steve
Hey drake, I can’t find the rake or the foam pad and the links aren’t working for them? Where did you get those from?
www.detailusupply.com/collections/all
Hey bro! The foam pads can be found right here on my new website! As far as the rake, I don’t recall at the moment. But let me find out!
What did you use to remove the the left over black film?? Looked like Super Clean in the purple bottle...???
Yes super clean works well to get rid of the black marks!
good video ,thanks bro
Glad you enjoyed it! 😎
No value don't own a boat or pontoon but I appreciate the beautiful job done respect
looks awesome people just don-t realize how much work goes into a project like that 2 ?'s assuming i could use that same process on diamond plate do you have a video on the shark skin and could i use it on diamond plate
Yep same process
Hey man friends don’t let friends back cut . lol . You done an awesome job. They look good but if you get white lines or have problems finishing it’s because the back cut. start at the bottom and work your shine line up
Thanks man!
Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching, ha!
Wow so useful and cool men should be like this 💪
Thanks, hahaha
Aircraft and a pressure washer, it may take a couple applications but it's way faster. Nice job polishing.
Nice! Didn’t even think about the pressure washer
Also start from the bottom work from bottom to top. You won't leave the rouge lines/ excess rouge it will leave it Clean. Wipe it down with gas or mineral spirits after the Tripoli so you don't cross contaminate. It will help with your coloring stage/ second step with the green bar.
Thanks! For the help and not being rude about it :) I really appreciate it
If you ever need any help with polishing hit us up. We'll be down there in a month or so. Jokers Shine on Facebook or Instagram
Nice! I’ll let you have all the metal polish jobs! I hated every second of it! Ha
How can I polish a pontoon that shows some pitting? Is there a way to fill them and still get a shine?
I’m not an expert on pontoon polishing and have not done a lot of it at all, but I would just try to polish it the best you can, and get the best shine you can. I would not try to mess with filling pitted pontoons.
Do all pontoons have some sort of protection like shark hide? Have a older freshwater boat I want to do.... just curious what to do as far as prep. Thanks!
Yes typically. But not all! Only way to tell that I know of is by applying the aircraft stopper on a small spot to see
@@DrakesDetailing will do, thanks!
Can you recommend a grinder that will be compatible with the Zypher kit?
I honestly have no idea, this was my first time!
Those are some nice toons
I've been working on my pontoon I sanded with 320 then 600. I used the same kit you used from zephyr but mine came with a white one besides the orange and purple. Should I use it? And it seems like the orange one the cutting one seemed to leave it more clear that the purple or even white those just make it more cloudy. Any tips?
Sure! Use it. Just see what works and do what you think looks the best
Damn dude that is bad ass!!!!!
You know this guy is legit when you see the Makita!
💯💯💯
Damn, I’m out on this. Was going to do our toon, but nope. I’ll just figure out how to clean them up
Good choice ! Ha
It's a ton of work! That's why it's not cheap!
You got that right! Haha
