Here are Columbia, South Carolina's Poorest Neighborhoods

  • Wow! There are some really rundown neighborhoods in Columbia, South Carolina!
On this adventure, I went to the worst neighborhoods of Columbia, South Carolina. The purpose was to record the worst parts of town - most of which are on the capital city’s north side. It was a cold, dreary day, and a little misty out on a Friday, January 8, 2021 at 2 in the afternoon.
Columbia is in Richland County, which has a lot of poor and run down areas. The north side of town has the worst pockets, but it’s hit and miss up here - there’s nice neighborhoods mixed into the really rundown areas with all the high crime and poverty. A quarter of this city’s 133,000 residents live in poverty, and it ranks as the 20th most dangerous place in the state - both are above average, but not terrible. The places we’ll see have Columbia’s highest concentration of poverty and crime.
I’m going to kind of bounce around on the north end of Columbia and show you on a map where I am. Here are the worst areas of Columbia, South Carolina.

I've lived in areas like this before in South Carolina, some of them in way worse shape than this. It's not necessarily that people already living here hate it, but...
The neighborhoods looking trashy is just the result of family issues, lack of time, general laziness, etc (not that they're poor). and when it looks like crap it drives down the property value.
Since the cost of living in South Carolina is so affordable, even people here in extreme poverty are homeowners and have vehicles, internet, all that stuff.
This is nothing compared to some areas of Charleston (e.g. Wadmalaw Island), some of those people don't have clean water or electricity. That's a whole other story.

I grew up in an area not shown in this video. This is actually pretty decent scenery compared to worse areas and I can guarantee you it's not because of lack of time, money, income. I've lived in SC 34 years and there's places where literally it's drug haven. In the older days they would chase you on their bikes to sell to you. They would stand on the street corners and sidewalks in droves and dare to slow down 10 would run to you to"get that sell". There's been hundreds of drug related murders. Houses abandoned from the crime rate alone. This area is less than a mile from the interstate. Over time it has improved and you don't see the street sellers. You pretty much now have to have your connection but there are still plenty of drive through neighborhoods to do a quick grab of anything you want. There are parts of Columbia that are absolutely beautiful, don't get me wrong. I love the area I live in now more than anything, I live quiet and peaceful and don't even lock my doors at night and leave my car keys right in thy ignition. As with any big city your gonna have your different economic displays of either money, drugs or just people living in poverty. Again, this is not the worst part of Columbia I can guarantee you that! ☺

I've lived in a place similar to this and in middle class neighborhoods. Now live in the woods. But I'm gonna tell you, that there is some fine people that live in these areas. I lived in a place in SC called Horse Creek Valley an old mill village, and I'm here to tell you your not going to find no better folks than live in those little towns that make up places like the valley. But there are also some folks that live there that are broken on drugs and can't even take care of themselves. Who do you think gives to those people. Well not the people who are well off. It's all the people that are living pay check to pay check in those houses that helps the real poor and unfortunate ones. They don't judge. They just give when they see a fellow human suffering. But as more and more outsiders move into the valley. Running from whatever. Crime is growing like a cancer and so is drug use. It's sad because most of these people would give you the shirt of thier back. But sometimes it gets stole before they can give it away. You want to do a "real documentary" on one of these neighborhoods. Come to the valley. Eat at the Bluetop or Midway Grill and talk to the "old folks". Go to Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church and sit a spell with the nuns there. Go down to Harrison Caver park and play some basket ball with the local kids. Go to Sassafras Park and go into the community center. Andy and Barney are there. Learn about our history. The Train Wreck, Closing the Mills, William Greg, the Trolley.... Etc. Driving through a place tells you nothing. You gotta go in. You gotta live it at least for a day. Or even a meal. Stop in. Enjoy, there people are beautiful!

As for the rest of the area I’m sure back in the day this was a way nicer area to live , cute little houses , with front porches , leafy green streets . I just purchased a rural property in Orangeburg. Anyone from that area? I'm up north, and people just seem so friendly from down south.

Have you done the worst parts of Greensboro and Raleigh yet?

raleigh seemed to be all fake and new looking.

@@LongLeggedOne you lost me with the fake part. New looking? Yes. But it's still some rough parts of the city too. Remember, not only is Raleigh a state capital city it's where the Research Triangle Park is which is home to some of the world's largest technology companies such as IBM, Google, Cisco, & GlaxoSmithKline, & Red Hat. And Apple is also coming to the Research Triangle Park so therefore Raleigh-Durham had no choice but to clean it up.

Great video. Makes me appreciate where I live. I live on a gravel road and it`s in better shape than many of these. I feel bad for anyone who has to live like this.

I went there for Fort Jackson and after I left the base and saw the surrounding areas it is just sad 😞 but the foliage is beautiful in the fall

What??? 3 sides of Fort Jackson are bordered by five hundred thousand to million dollar homes. The 4 th side is sadly drug infested. The deprived areas in this video are not near fort Jackson.

Tee hee, beautiful foliage in the fall. Me thinks you haven’t been to northern states much. I truly hope you get a chance to visit some day.

Seeing this video I immediately knew what he was talking about. I was born and raised in 29C Bethel Bishop. I went to Perry and Johnson. I moved to Atlanta at age 21 but I always come visit home. I guess because I grew up in Columbia I didn’t think it was that bad but it could’ve been because everything around me was pretty normal. I guess looking back at it now maybe it was worse than I thought. But it’s still my home

Atlanta has way more homeless ppl than columbia, just ride around Peachtree in Atlanta then ride around the downtown area in columbia when u come back again. 5x worser if not more

@Jay Why the west end of Atlanta actually had a vibe to it. If people say Atlanta is the black San Francisco well, it sure is in that part.
