10 Places in South Carolina You Should NEVER Move To

  • Wow there are some really terrible parts of South Carolina, I'll tell you that!
    South Carolina. This southern state offers beautiful weather, historic charm and the opportunity to take a step back and appreciate a slower pace of living. More and more people are relocating to South Carolina and it’s not hard to see why. The Palmetto State offers the perfect mix of vibrant cities and gorgeous beaches, not to mention the cost of living here is astonishingly low - like 13% cheaper than the national average.
    But face it, it’s not all crashing waves and swaying palm trees. There’s bad places to live in every state.
    To measure the bad places in South Carolina, we have to use two things - data and opinion. We’ve looked at a bunch of data, you know - crime, poverty, the quality of schools and home prices. Plus, we took into account YOUR opinion - that’s right - you South Carolinians have a lot to say about which places in your state are great and which are not so great. So listen up, because you don’t want to make the mistake of moving to one of the places we’re talking about today.
    Let’s get started.

      You just LOVE to talk about that "Poverty Line," but take a gander at the Cost of Living. Where I live, it is possible to live fairly comfortably in a suburban home with $36.4 K a year. This is WITH average debts like mortgages and car payments. Without those debts in low income neighborhoods, I wouldn't be surprised if many of your views fell flat on their face whimpering with emptying bladders. The way things are going, the "rich" states may have struggling citizens who live ABOVE the poverty line because that cost of living is insane. Bottom line: Stop cooking your facts like CNN. The household income means LITTLE if the cost of living is decent or low.

    • @MS-xh7cw
      @MS-xh7cw Před 2 lety +10

      Facts are facts. When 25% of adults never graduated high school, 30% are making less than $15k a year, and you have a high crime rate it doesn’t matter what the cost of living is. I’ve lived in SC all my life and we have some nice places but half the state is a dump. And blame our crooked do nothing legislature.

    • @DarkPegasus87
      @DarkPegasus87 Před 2 lety +4

      @@MS-xh7cw: I live here, too. 1) A government that does nothing is the best kind because the government is like a gardener with a black thumb. Do you want such a person touching what they will only kill? I don't.
      2) It does matter. Poverty mainly exists in areas with vastly disproportionate degrees of wealth. When you have poor people living in places that care more about the rich gated communities and the wealthy financial districts, you get hellholes like Detroit and Chicago. The cities look so great on the travel brochures, but you wouldn't want to live there.
      When the city you live in has a balanced amount of wealth, high or low, it's fine because the cost of living is affordable in comparison to the local wages. At that point, it becomes an existential question of "how much money do you really need?" In hellholes like Detroit and Chicago, no amount of money will ever be enough because they will NEVER be paid enough to live anywhere above a slum...unless they OWN some of the big business corporations in charge. These things DO matter, and most of that "Poverty Line" crap is decided by the idiots that screwed up Detroit and Chicago. They're like Sam Harris being called intelligent when he starts his argument off with a Think of the Children Appeal to Emotion. Clearly, those who think he's intelligent don't know what intelligence looks like.

    I grew up near several of the places on your list. These were once thriving, bustling communities. Union, Chester, Lancaster, and a bunch of others. Two big things happened. One is the interstate system. New businesses build along the interstates. I85 Charlotte-Spartanburg-Greenville, I77 Charlotte-Rock Hill-Columbia. Union and Chester are right in the middle of that big triangle. Too far from the interstates for new businesses to come there. When the cotton mills closed, that destroyed the economies of a huge part of the upstate. If the jobs aren't there, people have to leave to find jobs. The population goes down. It just draws everything into a negative spiral in terms of jobs, schools, everything.

      Ummm, you sound like the folks I left behind there. Yeah there are plenty of worst places, but the author was talking about SC. I have watched Myrtle Beach become a huge slum like Kissimmee, FL. So I mostly agree with the author. I lived in Charleston for 30 years, and my family traces back to the king of England granting property. I have been to 45 countries, and own property in two. I have seen far worse situations in other places, but that does not excuse the issues in SC. On the other hand, SC certainly has some beautiful and charming places, and is nostalgic. But then again, so do the other 49 states, all of which I have travelled repeatedly, so I agree that all states have good and bad. To sum it up, I left there for valid reasons, mostly because SC falls short of other states.

    I lived in Greenwood for 5 months. I went there for Rehab. In fact, there's A LOT of a much more "free spirited" versions of rehabilitation places than most cities rather than right there in Greenwood. It is a very big recovery centered place. A lot of people changed their lives there but there is the higher percentage that gets stuck there bc they want to leave rehab one night and go get high, get caught, get kicked out and now they're rummaging the streets of Greenwood. This all could be bc a lot of actively high addicts are a lot of lumps on a log there. However, I'm a singer and their New spring church is the most amazing one, most talented one I've ever attended! It has its pros and cons but mostly, it'd make me very depressed just to simply pass through there bc often, the girls I met have passed away due to their choice in going back out there and getting high at the wrong place and the wrong time and losing their life. My experience with Charleston is a sour one. I was stationed there in the Navy and found the residents to be condescending and "uppity" - not just to the Navy but to most of the rest of the state. They all hated the Navy presence and claimed the city would be better off without it, in spite of the fact that it was the Navy that first responded to the needs of the residents after Hurricane Hugo (a time before FEMA was conceived). Their view on the rest of the state was that they were expected to pilgrimage to Charleston's obscenely commercialized historical tourism every year and then go away back to their caves "up-state". When the US Navy packed up and left in the late 90's the city only narrowly avoided bankruptcy through federal government monetary infusions to upgrade a dead ended interstate highway and to develop a major seaport for Japanese auto imports.
    > The other thing that plagues South Carolina can be seen if you compare education and quality of life and state provided services almost anywhere in the state to that of it's capital, Columbia. A disproportionate amount of a SC resident's state taxes go towards developing the capital city socially, educationally, and economically, leaving the rest of the state to fend for itself. Colombia exists in an alternate universe from the rest of the state.
    > Crime is viewed and handled differently in small southern towns, regardless of the state. Many crimes in large cities go unreported so the smaller towns have what seems to be a higher crime rate. It's just that nothing goes unnoticed in a small town and the people of those towns respect and depend on the local law enforcement to take care of it. Also, local cost of living has a large effect on local incomes. $30k in a rural area in the south where a 3 bedroom home costs less than $90k is a modest but comfortable income. 401Ks come from large corporations and industry, so, no, most people in these farming communities don't have them.

The State is responsible for providing equal education to all. The local mayor are responsible for champion meduim to large scale companies to their market. With good jobs, the tax base will increase, that will cause the schools to improve, and the rate of crime will go down. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this out. Just my 2 cents.

I did something wrong one day and I think that every neighbor knew and and had something to say to me before I made it home. Sitting on the porch was so exciting. Everyone shopped on Main Street on Saturdays. Walmart opened and the stores on Main Street began to close. Then the public library was burned down; It used to be a big rambling house on Main Street. Just for some context South Carolina was a large tobacco producing state. When the tobacco companies were sued and tobacco lost it's subsidies the trickle down effect from the loss of the annual "Cash crop" no only affected merchants but had ripple effect that you still see today. For an extra punch in the gut, the Clinton administration gave tax incentives for textile and other industries to move "Off shore" to take advantage of slave wages, again crippling the local economies.

When they all shut down and left, they left fast. People would show up to work to find the doors locked and management gone. Whole town populations were left unemployed. I do not believe that Darlington should be number one on the list. Granted, this person making the video probably used statistics. I would much rather be in SC any day of the week than in some crime ridden city that is over-populated. There are good and bad characteristics for just about any place in any country, but you have to live there to be able to make an educated decision about how a town ranks.

    For people looking to move to SC. Take some advice from a native.
    The weather is not beautiful. For about 5-6 months out of the year, it's about 70%-80% humidity and 80-90 degrees. That means, your real feel is going to be about 10 degrees above whatever the actual temperature is. And with humidity that high, you will find yourself literally drenched in sweat within minutes of just standing outside. Not even working or running or anything just standing. And 80-90 is about our average. Weve seen temps of 102 here, with a real feel closer to 110. Thats hot enough you don't even want to go outside, cause if you do you are at risk of heat stroke after about 30 minutes or so especially if your car doesn't have AC or home doesn't have AC. During the colder months it becomes livable again. With fall the humidity drops to about 60% and the temps take a dive to around 70, then down to the 50s-60s during the really cold months. These are the "beautiful weather" months.

    I was born and raised in Darlington and while alot things said about it is true, the public school education there is on point. My former high school has been on USA Today's top magnate schools list for awhile now and the public high school isn't too bad either. After living 30+ years in the Atl I don't have any desire to move back there. I'd only visit because my mother's still there, but that's in.

    I’m from Charleston, but don’t live in SC anymore. Really unsure how North Charleston missed this list? Charleston/Mount Pleasant/Folly Beach/James Island/Summerville is beautiful, but very over populated, expensive, and not as “kind southern hospitable” as it once was. Ohio and New Yorkers have taken over. I’ll always say I’m from Charleston and call it “home”, but you couldn’t pay me to move back. Pretty disappointing what my city has become.

      I have to agree with you. I wasn't born here, but I've lived here for 30 years, and it's widely known that North Charleston is sketchy. No offense to you, North Charleston is like any other big city, they have their bad spots and good spots. Hilton Head is awesome in my opinion. I hope u have a good day!

    Nice vid. Sad but not surprised to see my hometown (Greenwood aka G-hood) on the list. Surprised Allendale, perhaps the most depressing town I've ever seen, wasn't on the list. Btw, Lancaster is pronounced with a heavy emphasis on the first syllable (LANK-astah).
