In his interviews, he said that if he wrote songs for women it was for them and he meant it, just the same as he wrote songs for men when he came out gay. Such an honest person. I'm sure he could have closely duplicated it live, but most tv shows with pop singers on countdown type shows and other general guest appearances were lyp-syncing to their own studio recorded music played on the radio to give the studio and tv audience that original refined and mixed sound ..
It was for practical production and marketing reasons. In many cases the main performers did not have the full bands with them, and if you look at many of these types of shows from the past, the instruments were unplugged..You can't hear an electric guitar not plugged in to juice and speakers ..it makes little to no sound..
The syndicated 80's U.S. countdown show, Solid Gold, hosted by Marilyn McCoo (after Dionne Warwick initially) did exactly the same...
