I finally caved and bought a 940. I fell in love with it’s sleekness and balance. Love the action and the feel in hand and in pocket. If I lost it I would have to replace it! It’s boring in the most interesting ways (if that’s possible). I can appreciate your review as we all have different needs and taste!
It's a tool that has a great reputation and looks awesome. For you it's a hobby, but for me, this seems like a perfect single purchase that I can use in any situation. The 940 checks the box for most people. Apart from aesthetics, the more I research these 940 s, the more I am seeing that they are the Glocks of the knife world. Thanks for reviewing, good insight.

That's exactly right, like glock, people hate on the 940 because it's not new, and it does everything you need it to very reliably. It's also irritating to hipsters just because so many people love it.
I have about 40 knives in my collection and Benchmade's/ Spyderco's are my most expensive...the 940 is a perfect folder IMO and I have 8 Benchmade folders and 1 BM auto, 940 is superlative for most everything...and it slices fine! It is truly a classic EDC. The reason people like it is because it's perfect, for many tasks, from food prep, self defense, and everyday tasks. Hard to say for most other knives this size. It is a pleasure to carry and use. BTW don't fall in love with it, just use it :)
This is an EDC knife! It’s not SUPPOSED to be for a specific use, and that’s why it’s great! Yeah, it’s pricey and Benchmade qc could be better, but the whole reason people like myself fell in love with it is because it can do more than one specific thing. Just some food for thought. Keep up the great vids🤙🏻

The 940 has everything I want in a knife. Durable blade that can get sharp as hell and hold an edge for a while. Strong tip. Closed off back, (I don’t like getting junk in the handle). Durability. It’s slim and easy to carry. No fingers in the path of the blade. I don’t have to swing mine to close it (it drops shut). Good steel. And best of all a crazy good warranty so I never need to worry about beating the tar out of my knife.

What makes the BM 940 so appealing is the size and ease of use. It’s nearly identical in dimensions with the ancient Opiel No.8. It’s the all around everyday use for realistic tasks the average person needs a knife for.
I'm not going to say you are wrong. I tend to disagree though. As someone who loves both the Benchmade 940 and the Spyderco PM2 I will say they are both great. Yes, Benchmades are overpriced but Spyderco is rapidly catching up to them. I bought my first PM2 a few years ago for $127 brand new. Now they are over $150. In that same time the original version of the 940 has only gone up roughly $10. But the 2 knives for me have completely different uses. I feel the 940 will hold up more to harder use because of the thicker blade. The PM2 is much better for slicing and breaking down cardboard. For me they are not a good direct comparison and it bugs me that people try to do that.

Great video Jake!! I own a 940 and carbon fiber 940-1 !! I bought them and now that I have owned a lot more knives I kind of see them similar as you do! They are great knives but now I think they are passed by many! It’s definitely a good knife but for its cost against the competition i think it’s just ok! I think the two 940’s I own are the only two I will ever buy!! They are a great knife but my interests in knives change as the years go by and I understand them more! Keep up the great work! i love the 940 and have all flavors of it ; I just wished it was thinner behind the edge, some of them have an unintentional re-curve, having a free shut action induces some lateral blade play..but with that said its an amzing EDC knife !
Name 1 thing it won't slice. 940 and Delica 4 K390 is all a man really needs.
I have to say I agree with you about the 940. I’ve never had an interest in it, but then I’m a Spyderco guy myself. I only have two Benchmades because I think the particular models I own are exceptional designs.

The 940 is a lot like a Sebenza. It’s a one knife type of deal. There are definitely better options but it’ll always be a classic knife. There’s a lot to like with a 940, especially given its durability for a non knife person. I think Benchmade’s CS is also a huge win. I’ve done some bad things to Benchmades and they always make it right, even when they probably shouldn’t have. For example, they replaced the carbon fiber handles on my 940-1 for free after I accidentally ran it over 😅
All of what he said is correct, this can also be applied to the CRK Sebenza. When they came out they were great, but since it's release, so many better knives have come out.

I agree. Whenever I start looking around for a knife in the $200 range, the 940 keeps coming up, but I never take the plunge. There has consistently been another knife that excites me more. I'm hoping to get a Three Rivers Atom soon and would love to see someone on youtube do a comparison between the 940, PM2 and Atom.

i just got a BladeHQ exclusive 940 in CPM-M4 for my birthday this year. Prior to this knife my only experience with any sort of "high end" knife was my PM2 in S30V. I gotta say this 940 is a game changer for me. I cut hundreds of feet worth of cardboard everyday and this thing just blows right through it with no issues. I also love how carriable it is, it literally disappears in the pocket! 10/10 knife in my opinion.
If you were cutting that much cardboard a day... why wouldn't you just use a box cutter?

I bought my 940 because I live in Oregon and said "why not" it was the only knife that spoke to me, so I bought it. I agree with you, if I wasn't an Oregonian I would have probably never gotten any benchmades and stuck to other stuff. I will admit that it has replaced my other edc knives... mostly because I know that if I accidentally do something stupid to it the warranty has me covered.
I can't wait for that comparison. The Malibu quickly unseated the 940 as my favorite knife in that style. Admittingly, I was kind of a 940 fanboy. That says a lot about how good the Malibu is.
Totally feel you on the discussion about "entry grail".
A LOT of knives have fallen into that weird deadzone of "When I started collecting, these blew my mind and I always wanted them, and I still wonder about them to this day, but I've blown so far past them that even though I still always wonder about them, I'll probably never buy one now." Even though you know theyre probably great knives, they're just not necessarrily interesting enough (subjective) to throw the cash at them instead of putting said cash towards something more exotic.
It's a shame that knife review channels like ours can't put out videos like these without getting higher-than-average like:dislike ratios because of these horribly perpetuated things that you mentioned... One guy gets a 940, it's all he knows, but he sings its praises to the moon and back because it's his only knife... he gets butthurt whenever he hears that it might not be the greatest thing since sliced bread, and he encourages other people to buy the exact same knife and feel the exact same way. People don't like feeling left out, and I think knives like the 940 and the PM2 have stuck around for so long simply out of momentum and the sense of community that comes with having the same knife that everyone else has... So many people who aren't "knife guys" who don't know better get immediately shoved into YOU NEED A PM2 or YOU NEED A 940, then when they find out that they just spent more money than they ever thought they would on a knife and it might NOT be the greatest thing in the world, they get salty.

They all are tools that have different design philosophy to say one is better than another is kinda silly. It’s just a matter of preference. Same could be said about steels

I got a Bugout first but would always hear about how great the 940 was. So I got one and I thought It was good but would always grab my bugout instead of the 940. The 940 now has a new home

What knife would you recommend for that price range
I'm a Shaman over PM2 and Presidio 2 CF Elite over 940 guy. If you wanna try a Presidio 2 CF Elite I'll tell Kyle to send it to you when he gets done.
Of all the knives I've owned, there's only one that lived up to its mystique... the Victorinox Cadet. My right pocket sees a lot of different knives, but my left pocket sees the Cadet every single day. It is my desert island knife.

My 940 is currently getting warrantied for a broken Omega Spring. Im also getting a coated blade instead of the satin. Since my 940 has been gone, ive tried a couple knives. Nothing feels right. I tried the QSP Penguin, great action, doesnt feel likw it could take a beating though. I tried a cheap Smith & Wesson knife, terrible pocket clip, bigger knife so it took up a lot of pocket space. Finally, I bought another Benchmade. I bought the Presidio 2. Black and black with the half serrated blade. Its a bigger knife. But it has S30V, Carbon reinforced Nylon scales, 3 Pillar construction, Steel liners that are milled, and a some other things that make it a great buy for $150. Ive had it for about a week, and I still cant wait to get the 940 back. Yesterday I was using the Presidio 2 to pry up a couple boards from a Pallet. Even with 3 Pillars, Steel liners, etc.... The plastic handles get me. It feels like I have to take it easy on the knife. However, With the 940, im not "scared" to do anything with it. The aluminum scales just make it feel like a tank. Makes it feel like you couod put it through anywhere without a worry. I dont get the same feeling from Nylon, or G10 handles for some reason.
So if you have a silver bladed 940 and send it into BM they will coat the blade to black if you ship it to them?

I’m happy with mine. But it’s true, you’re either a spiderco or a Benchmade guy. I owned a PM2 first, carried it for a week and hated it. It was huge and scraped my hand going in and out my pocket. 940 disappears in my pocket. Knife is strong and can do it all. It’s like a multi purpose master or none type deal. One of my favorites!
Getting a 940 today with brass scales. beautiful knife! I hope I feel differently than him. I am also getting a manix 2 LW today, so I will be able to get a good comparison.

Just pick up the 940-2003 for a safe queen in Collection $450 and I’m thinking the 940-2 for EDC.

Okay the Protech Malibu exists, but can you buy one?..... I have tried multiple times now and it just isn't in stock for sale, almost ever. The 940 is atleast somewhat obtainable. When I was 15, this was a grail knife to me. Now I'm 23 and buying one, but will it live up to all these years of being over hyped? I don't know, I doubt it. I am going to EDC it for a month exclusively and throw everything I have at it in terms of use. If it goes well, I'll stop doubting it and start loving it. I know there are better options, I have better options, BUT I can't stop wanting to try this one.

When I held the bug out, it felt cheap. Plastic. Just cheap. Idk how else to describe it. But for $130 bucks, it’s ridiculous imo. But that’s just my opinion.
I wouldn’t get the green original 940, but I just ordered the 940-1 for my dad for his bday, and this will be his first edc knife. He’s now seen my edc tasks so he knows he doesn’t need sometbing giant.
I will be ordering myself one as well, from (REC), as I don’t seem to favor the “over built” 8.5 inch plus edc knives. Tho I do love my super freek.

Yeah, bug outs in plastic suck. Personally I think they are dangerous for medium level tasks. But I bet throwing flytanium on them is a worthy upgrade. I personally am a sucker for that og deep green aluminum on the 940 so I recently went with that. If it gets ruined there’s always the aftermarket titanium scales as an upgrade.
Just bought this model. Didn't realize it was sort of a standard model to own.
Exactly my thoughts. Its a 20 year old design and it shows. Buy one used for a great price and pass it on for a great price because everyone should experience it at least once. But it's a little long in the tooth to keep in a modern rotation.
And yet people still carry Opinels and Victorinoxes that are much much older is design. The question I ask myself is does it do it’s job? And yes. It does. A lot better than a lot of newer knives.

I love my 940bk. It’s a workhorse. I don’t mind spending 200 on a knife that I’m going to carry for a lifetime. Its the only one I carry now.

Just got my first 940 and a little disappointed. Centering is off and the action horrible. Keep playing with the pivot screw to dial it in, but why do I need to such on a $200 knife. My PM2 was perfect day 1 and year 5. I want to love it, but struggling to connect.
To center it you need to loosen the body screws slightly and open up the blade. Then push the blade it the direction where it needs to go. Tighten the screws back up and boom, centered blade. The pivot has very little impact on the centering in my experience.
I literally had the same exact experience as you with the 940 always wanted one, got into knives didn’t get one for the same reason. I just found one super cheap so I had to pull the trigger just to say I’ve held it in my hand bc I’m a knife guy and had to see what was up with it. So we’ll see when it gets here in a couple days

I've been looking for a great all round knife you would say as an EDC for sometime now. The 940 had caught my eye after first discounting it.
Just so you know any form of lock knife is illegal over here, as an EDC without legitimate purpose, but a lock knife makes much more sense than a slip joint to me and I've enough sense not to take it out without goid reason in public.
So I'm looking for something that doesn't look to aggressive at all.
I bought a Case stockman for a friend that's in his 80s that is a avid knife collector not long ago as I knew it was something he was looking to add.
This got me back interested in the subject and Case do make some pretty knives and they do have so lovely lock backs. Not mention I've always wanted a Buck 110 it just looks so classic...
Any after spending considerable time trying to find the right pocket knife I'm still stumped. I like some of the Spydercos the designs look really ergonomic and great . Still have that soft spot for the Buck and the Case Copper, but the Benchmade 940 really seems to fit the bill. I'm looking for a gentleman's knife that has great use ability and isn't going to scare people.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I have both the 940 and the PM2 and I think they are both vastly overrated.
The 940 doesn’t feel durable. I prefer the upgraded 551-1 Griptilian.
The PM2 has a wimpy tip and feels like a block of wood in my hand. I prefer the Shaman.

I've had this exact same model for four years, and although I enjoy using it, the Omega springs are it's Achilles heel. Mine has been back to Benchmade twice in that time after the most gentle and occasional use (sharpening the grandkids coloring pencils, peeling fruit, opening packages etc.). Benchmade's warranty was excellent but because I live in the UK, it took many weeks to get it back (twice). I've still got the 940 but I always carry a Cold Steel Mini Recon 1 just in case.
I have a 940 and a PM 2. I do prefer my 940 for all around use as an EDC carry. My PM2 it's much more of a slicer.
But for me the 940 checks more boxes in favor of an EDC carry. Somebody told me my PM2 looks like they Bread a stork to a prius and that's how they came up with the PM2 unfortunately I can't get that visual out of my head every time I look at my PM 2. 😵💫
I feel the same way about the PM2. I absolutely dislike spyderco because they all look the same . I do not own a 940 but have griptilians in m390, 20cv, s30v, 154cm , and with very expensive scales. Griptilians are my holly grail. I will be getting a 940 soon after watching this video I am curious. I will get the G10 version.
Just got my first Griptilian, 20cv Spydiehole large size. And although I find it stil expensive, 240 euro here in Europe, it’s a freakin piece of quality!

Every 940 I have held has atleast one of the following: blade play(side to side) or not centered. I understand it doesn’t necessarily affect the function of the knife, but I do think a product that is pushing $200 should be pretty high quality controlled.
Yeah that’s true. The best option when buying a Benchmade is to go to a store and handle the knife and check it before you buy it. If you find one that has perfect centering and no blade play it’s a great knife. The only thing I do when I buy a new Benchmade is instantly swap out the springs with aftermarket ones from eBay.
I have 2 "nice" knives. A regular 940 with a black s30v blade. And a PM2 in s30v with flytanium micarta scales and titanium hardware. Both are great, but I like the 940 more. I just feel like I have to be careful with the pm2, and the 940 will take whatever I throw at it. But there are things where the PM2 is better
A few things. I categorically disagree with you about the 940. However, I did thoroughly enjoy your video and watched the entire thing. You have a pleasant way about you and a great presentation. The 940 is the most uniquely designed knife on the market. Esthetically and functionally, it has no match. That being said, I have one of them and 20+ PM2s. Yet, the 940 still holds its own in my rotation. S30V, if heat treated properly like Spyderco and Buck can do, and sometimes Benchmade is all anyone ever needs. Wants? No. But, needs? Absolutely. Please don't be offended by this last comment, but if I can see your entire chin and upper lip, you don't have a beard. I know it's genetics, but if you can't pull it off, don't.
There is nowhere I would rather be than riding my 940. Hulk Hogan, New York Yankee, Ford F-150. My pocket knows, the legend grows but alas I never got one. Now I have so many hunks of junk and I am ever in a funk - would you like to try my Sitivien?
I walked into the store many times to buy the Osborne 940 and I always walk out with something else always Benchmade I'm not sure why but I'm going in today to buy an Osborne again let's see what I walk out with today I do hate the fact that it doesn't got to land your hole

I've always been interested in getting a 940 but I've always found the price to high for what you get I appreciate your take on this because so many people praise it and put it in a category it doesn't belong in for the price I think I would go with a different model from Benchmade great review

I got to check out the 940-2 from our homie LeftyEDC. I gotta say, ugly. Ugly AF bro. But you know what? I kinda get the hype. As an action snob, the action is adequate for me. As a cutter it goes through my cardboard just fine. It's still not at the top of my list even though I enjoyed my time with it.

I've watched this vid several time and agree with your conclusion, but am still a 940 fanboy. Believe the Malibu is the better knife, but no one sells it in Canada thus my 940 wins, simply due to scarcity.
Not saying your necessarily wrong, but that seems like an awfully strong opinion for an item with 7 days of pocket time, I personally would consider that "initial impressions" territory, I have used tons of gear that my opinion has wildly varied after say a month, or a year from where it was in a week, perfectly fair to say that this isn't doing enough for you to get a chance to go a month or a year, but making a final decision after a week seems a bit hasty to me.
I like it for EDC i realy realy like it , i have knifes 3x price off 940 and just has samething . I like it and i dont care . Everybady bujing Microtech my microtech ar in closet. And 949 is in my pocket.

Agree. 940 is cool, Bugout is better. Many other Benchmades are better not to mention other brands. I would argue it should at the most be priced like a Bugout or Grip.

I agree. It carries great, it's fun to fiddle with, but as a cutting tool it sucks. The handle is good, the weight is good, the action is great, it carries great. But the blade sucks. The blade is too thick IMO, and it's short and the grind doesn't even use the full height of the blade, so it's just too thick behind the edge. It's a wedge, not a cutting tool. So many better options out there.
I guess it just matters about how good of a sharpener you are. Ive had mine for about 5 months now, and its never had an issue with cutting. I work in a wearhouse that deals with a lot of boxes. So ive cut tens of thousands of boxes there alone. There was a week, where I had to cut flaps off boxes, for 10 and a half hours a day. Cut the 4 flaps, and put the box in its designates spot. I hadn't sharpened my knife for a month or so before that week. So id already cut a bunch of boxes and such before hand. So it wasn't the absolute sharpest it could be. But by the end of that week, I still had a knife that could cut receipt paper. Just when I felt like the knife was getting doll, I could quite literally feel it get sharper. It may not be the best all around slicer. But its not exactly what its meant for. Its meant for all around edc. Its a tool. Ive done everything from opening letters, to prying up boards and opening paint cans. I eat dinner with it. And after sharpening, I could shave with it if I wanted to. This knife is more than a knife, its a tool.

I couldnt agree more; I've never bought a 940 either & you hit the nail on the head for me. I'm not really into the smaller knives like the 940. Its day has come & there are better options for the same or less.
I do not own any Benchmade folding knives because of the lock and springs tend to break over time. Also Benchmade knives are expensive but so are Spyderco and other better knife brands. I like Spyderco Para 2 and Shaman because of the stronger locks and easy to clean out if they get dirty inside. However Benchmade has a much better warranty than Spyderco does so if there is a problem with a knife they will fix it and even replace the blades if needed and free sharpening on their lifetime warranty which Spyderco and other brands cannot match. That said I still prefer small fixed blade knives like LT Wright knives Bark River and other quality brands. Because of the strength of a fixed blade with no worry of problems with the folding parts especially for field use but not urban use. Many times I will carry 2 knives a small fixed blade and a folder and use one or the other depending on the cutting task needed.
Never had an issue with the Axis lock. Omega springs, yes. Axis lock is actually a very strong lock. But the strongest, but by far not the weekest. I think the onlt Benchmade I can think of thats known for breaking, is the Adamas, and most of those failures are because of the stop pins, not the actual lock itself. I guess everyone has different experiences.

I Carrie and 940 every day do I care about it no it’s a usable tool only. Honestly I can give a crap about knives they either work or their junk throw them away People around me love I gave away a mini Claymore and north fork. 9400 If there are not a functional tool that I want get rid of it I don’t care I gave what Breault ask show M gravity knife give me knife I gave that one to my neighbor he loves it
What a great review….I have always felt the same as you. I never would have bought it even for a good price. However, one was just recently gifted to me and I have really grown to like it a ton more…especially because I already carry 2 knives, A slicy slipjoint traditional and this pairs up with something like that very well. If you asked me if I’d rather keep my PM2 or the 940, I’d also keep the PM2. Good news is, right now no one is asking me to do that and I’m using them both 😂
the fact that you use the thumb studs to open it, tells me that you dont really get the knife.

These knives cost a maximum of $8 for Benchmade to produce. Let that sink in. Benchmade are overpriced to the point of being ridiculous. I know a local dealer that charges half of what the online dealers do, and he still makes money. A Cold Steel or Buck will do the exact same thing. Stop chasing stuff and playing these online , ridiculous prices.
For a knife that's described as a "user", seems to be lacking wear.
To me, the 940 is the Buck 110 of Benchmade. With all of the other offerings out there, it should be put to rest, albeit with honors...

I wouldn't really say so. $200 for S30V, Aluminum Scales, inlayed Liners, etc... Anodizing adds to that cost. Anodized aluminum scales, Anodized Titanium backspacer. You're also paying money for an amazing warranty, and a lifetime of free sharpening. You're also paying money for an amazing heat treat. You're paying for the materials, the time and any amount of work it takes to anodize those parts, the warranty, life sharp, and more. All that, for $200. I cant think of many knives that can do all that for the same price or less.
