Thanks a lot for the great review....got my hands on the 945 mini version of this knife....and unboxing or brand new knife reviews seem premature....and I totally agree about the handles feeling chalky when it's brand new....almost makes me want to keep the knife neatly stored lest I get a scratch on the handles 😂
Great review. I lovr how you point out the cost of machining on the knife compared to other knives; so many people don't understand that. Now Benchmade's pricing is a little high but for a USA made knife you will have that plus where they are located I don't know what the local skilled labor market is like compared to other areas of the country. I mean looknat ProTec in California and not many complain about their price. The next time you send your original in to Benchmade they offer a reblabing at reasonable price from what I've heard.
Great review bud! I don’t care about out of the box impressions. I want to see someone’s opinion who has spent a lot of time with a tool. I love my 940, and no other knife has ever taken it’s place for me. I do like my zt 0452 a lot as well, but the 940 is the perfect everyday knife. A true legend.
I had been wanting a 940 for a very long time, maybe 10 years. This week I finally got one. I'm still at that stage where I don't want to get it dirty. LOL, It's everything you've mentioned. Looking at the blade sides through a macro lens, I can see, for lack of a better term, I call micro coining on the flats. Not sure how they did that. Like you said, "It feels sturdy". I do have a few budget friendly china knives but, I've mostly s carried small fixed blades and my Victorinox Pioneer. I'll still carry my Fiddleback Forge small fixed blade, but I'm adding the 940 to my pocket. Nice video. Thanks
Use it. It loves abuse 😆 I have many spyderco and bm but always go back to 940. Probably because I’m not scared to use it for unspeakable things. It’s only real downfall is the omega springs.
Yeah, like mine also, looks almost the same as yours. Except I got the deepcarryclip, which isn’t that ergonomic but wel, it’s just a better carry imo. Centering is awful, did send the first one back to my European distributor, the second one was not much better. But it’s a really true EDC.
I'm glad you made this review, and I'm glad I found it when I did. I just watched someone review the 940 and say it was a horrible knife that doesn't even cut, which besides being untrue is just simply not my experience.
Thanks for your review! The 940 seems like the kind of knife that pays off the longer you have it especially with those aluminum scales. Looks like it gets a lot of unique character! It is a bit disappointing to hear about the springs needing replacing. That's the only thing holding me back from getting one but it is nice to know benchmade will fix it up for ya.
You pay for a lifetime warranty on every Benchmade knife because they'll take care of the knife for you for the life of the knife wether thats 5 years or 50 years. That is why Benchmade is King.

I carried a PM2 for a while but it gradually fell out of favor because the thing is just bulky, and the G10 scales with the Lynch NW deep carry clip made it hard to pull out of the pocket (not to mention that it rips up the fabric like sandpaper). So I picked up a 940-2 last Sunday and it's an immediate improvement. It's slim, very light, has more than enough blade for whatever task I need it for, and the Benchmade deep carry clip + smooth G10 scales makes it a joy to deploy. The PM2 is a great knife, but the 940-2 is simply better in almost every way as an EDC that you want to carry and forget that it's even there until you need it.

Omega springs are so cheap on eBay and so easy to replace yourself,no need whatsoever to keep sending them back,takes me around 15mins to replace springs.
In regards to the saltwater exposure, how long did you wait until you cleaned it? When you cleaned it, did you take it completely apart, or just take off the blade? If you did a complete disassemble, did you notice any rust on the internals/places not accessible from the outside? I’m seriously considering buying the original 940, as well as the 945 (G10) I have 2 custom full size crooked rivers, which I love, however in certain environments, they’re less than “inviting”
When I exposed it to The salt water environment, I intentionally didn’t clean the blade to see how rust resistant it was. While it didn’t absolutely rust away as you saw in the video there were some tiny spots of rust that were there. They have since then gone away from normal use. I have noticed though that the liners can also rust on you if you don’t maintain them. But if you rinse it out with fresh water and dry it then you should never really have a problem from my personal experience.

Honestly, most of the folding knives that you carry and use for 5-6 years are going to need refurbished. It's even more necessary if your the type of person that frequently sharpens the blade. I have a Benchmade Griptillian that I've carried for 6 years and last year the blade was replaced, pivot, axis mechanism, and pocket clip. Benchmade did all the work for $50. And honestly after 6 years of use that's not to bad for fixing up what's been a super rugged knife. The blade on my Griptillian had been sharpened to about half it's original size and I'm fairly certain the continuous wear on the pivot, axis lock, stop pin, and clip had loosened the tolerances to a level of slop that was just to awful to ignore anymore. But I'm all fixed up now and ready for another five years or more!!
I’ll say this. I’ve had springs break on me in 1 month of use on my 940, or 1 year of use. I don’t abuse my knives either. I even had a benchmade foray that broke a spring and that’s my nice attire knife. They’re just using cheap metal their springs.
I am interested in the carbon fiber body knife. But you consider it a collector piece. is the carbon fiber as sturdy as the aluminum? what technique or sharpener do you use on your knife? what angle?.. Thank you Jack
Hey Jack! I personally have it as a collectors piece, but only by choice. The carbon fiber is very durable and sturdy. I have a few other knives that have carbon fiber and they’ve never broke. As for the sharpen, I use the edge pro apex 4 kit, sharpened at a 20 degree bevel per side.
the guy that made this video is my best friend and since he didn't answer you, I will. he has broken a ton of springs. but I also have a 940 that I've had for about the same amount of time and use it way harder than he does and I've never broken one.
I think they mean it doesn’t slice as well when slicing other stuff besides paper. Thickness behind the edge doesn’t matter with paper but does in case of say, potatoes and stuff like that / anything that consists of more material
Many people use pocket knives for quick food prep all the time. Especially when camping/outdoors. It's not the ideal tool for large amounts of specific food prep but quick & and easy, you bet. That's one reason why I keep my pocket knives clean & sharp.
If my memory serves me correct, the blade shape was used to be able to cut the tags off of tattles ears without accidentally cutting the ear. Simply using the back Tanto of the knife against the ear kept it from hurting the cattle ears.

Osborne spent a lot of time working on ranches and many old stockman style knives had spay blades on them. This type style is very reminiscent of that spay blade style or what we now know or call the reverse tanto.
Yeah. Honestly, the way I use my knives, high end steels don’t do much of a difference for me. They all go dull in about a weeks worth. I tend to prefer S30V or 20CV just because they’re easier to sharpen.
So I was going to go buy one tomorrow this is the first time I've heard anybody talk about it breaking it was between this or the mediator if I pay this much for a knife I don't want it breaking and I want to beat the hell out of it
It's my EDC 1 are all my knifes are in drower, I haw my knife whic I pay crazy money Microtech Ultratech Dead Card bronze 470€ and when I both 940 all others knifes are just dust colectors. Also 1 Omega broke and 1 mail solved problem. In 1month 2sets omega springs came. In 5minits knife was like newe ,but it worked on one 30 days Also customer service is so good all day Benchmade cos I pay 210€ knife for all my life. It worth ewery peny. And I beet him up and its like newe. Also that cind customer service also I will pay more ewery day. Also they sent deep cary pocket clipp like present that cind of thing I realy low its not just you boot and that is it . They realy got your back. If screws are lost ,or you need newe blade I think 30$ is newe blade S30V that is mu knife . And it's not small but look smoll it's light and isn't agresiw its beutiful knife, it's not tactical and other bs. And I realy like it.
if only they could machine the blade symetrically and centre the blade. its a cool design but the execution isnt awesome. maybe im just fussy because i own sebenzas

Huh? 5 year review after using it / carrying it 6 months of those years, combined? S30V is great steel. And Benchmade has great anodizing. Not this good. This knife legitimately still has the factory edge. This was more of pocket jewelry review than a legitimate full term use review.
Well you can see its been Sharpened a lot. And ive been carrying mine for about 5 months straight now (everyday since I got it). The wear on my knife is no where near his. And my scales are still chalky. I believe the only damage I have is a little tiny scratch from dropping it from 15-20 feet in the air onto concrete. I use the knife 100+ times a day. I have it in for warrant on a new Omega spring. Thats the only thing id say that "isnt good" about the knife
Why would a company keep producing a knife as well known as this with such an easy fix to a common problem as junk springs keep producing the knife year after year with the same spring design. I find it odd so many people keep saying it’s such a reliable knife when the internet is full of broken spring comments. This is why Spyderco is by far a better company than Benchmade. Benchmade obviously know of the spring issue and has for decades. DECADES!!! Shows how much Benchmade values their loyal customers. By ignoring such an easy fix. It’s like they are laughing at them. Buy Spyderco. Better company. Better product
I just got the bladehq exclusive-was so dull wouldn't even cut paper,took hour and half on a sharpmaker to get a good edge,and even with a good edge,it's a very mediocre slicer.Don't know why everyone's so gay about the 940,give me a Doug Ritter any day,or practically any spyderco

All axis locks have a little play. No worries there. I gave up on Benchmade a long time ago. Except for the 940. Can’t live without one.
I agree on the overprice! , especially when the handles are just die stamped aluminium….there is no milling or machining , I still love mine though

If they break, which with regular oiling is fair rare, just call em up and they send new ones free. Takes like 10 mins to swap.

The Butterfly tax is there for sure, but personally I think you feel it in the knife. It’s so smooth compared to other knives.

Get aftermarket omega springs. Way better than the crap springs Benchmade is now using.

Yea, they do have a carbon fiber version and an aluminum version. But both of those are pretty expensive

Up and down play is from your pivot losing mass. New pivot and it will go away.

Who the hell cuts potatoes with a pocket knife? Get a chef's knife.

FRN doesn't feel premium, but unfortunately neither does aluminum. If you want a true premium feel, upgrade your scales to titanium or CF.

No, it is not a good slicer for food. I still like it very much though.
I reprofiled mine by a lower angle and it slices tomatoes just fine. Still very sturdy.

This virtue signal on your part really proves nothing. You can find numerous donations to politicians on both sides no matter which knife company you look into. Most knife companies also attend the NRA has supported both bump stock band and red flag laws. Better stop buying any knives then.

Huh? 5 year review after using it / carrying it 6 months of those years, combined? S30V is great steel. And Benchmade has great anodizing. Not this good. This knife legitimately still has the factory edge. This was more of pocket jewelry review than a legitimate full term use review.

Well you can see its been Sharpened a lot. And ive been carrying mine for about 5 months straight now (everyday since I got it). The wear on my knife is no where near his. And my scales are still chalky. I believe the only damage I have is a little tiny scratch from dropping it from 15-20 feet in the air onto concrete. I use the knife 100+ times a day. I have it in for warrant on a new Omega spring. Thats the only thing id say that "isnt good" about the knife
Why would a company keep producing a knife as well known as this with such an easy fix to a common problem as junk springs keep producing the knife year after year with the same spring design. I find it odd so many people keep saying it’s such a reliable knife when the internet is full of broken spring comments. This is why Spyderco is by far a better company than Benchmade. Benchmade obviously know of the spring issue and has for decades. DECADES!!! Shows how much Benchmade values their loyal customers. By ignoring such an easy fix. It’s like they are laughing at them. Buy Spyderco. Better company. Better product
I own a Spyderco PM2 with an S45VN blade, and after just one month of use, 3mm of the tip broke off. The 940 tip looks very hard to break.
I just got the bladehq exclusive-was so dull wouldn't even cut paper,took hour and half on a sharpmaker to get a good edge,and even with a good edge,it's a very mediocre slicer.Don't know why everyone's so gay about the 940,give me a Doug Ritter any day,or practically any spyderco
