After surviving the Afghanistan war I was deployed to, an intense realization came to me that I was just a spec of dust in the universe. No one will remember me outside my direct family a few weeks after my funeral if I would die in combat. Or even just die in general. I realized that I don’t even know my great-great grand parents’ names. And in turn, the 4th generation after me will not know my name. But you know what? strangely enough, instead of filling me up with harrowing depression, the realization actually gave me peace. I don’t have to please everybody anymore. Just the ones who will actually miss me when I’m gone. The ones who I actually love, and love me back.

Don't have a close relationship at all with my siblings so when my dad who's 80 is gone I will be forgotten while alive well except for by my dog. Spent my time in combat then then fire/ems service and now law enforcement that if it's my time I will die one way or another and thus I shouldn't worry about it.

Great stuff as always Pete. After all this time…I’ve never yet purchased a Benchmade. Here in Oz the butterfly tax simply stings too hard. It’s an odd comparison but I recently ordered enough parts to rebuild the engine of one of my motorcycles, and I took a moment to reflect that the entire bundle of precision made Japanese parts…still cost less than a Benchmade 945!

I had my bugout omega spring break last year. I finally did the process of shipping it to Benchmade and got it back yesterday. I had them sharpen it too, and they sent it back in another little blue cinch pouch. I just love the bugout, its so thin and light, and completely easy for one hand use.

    • @risenfromyoutubesashesagai6302
      @risenfromyoutubesashesagai6302 Před 2 lety

I honestly hope they didn't burn the edge like initially. I swear I had to sharpen my buggy a good handful of times after I first got it, as it was extremely chippy. After a few passes over one of my DMT diamond stones, and it was good as normal. My other BMs in S30v don't chip, so a rookie mustve sharpened my original buggy.

My crisis was I lost my $40 knife, went all out and replaced it with a $400 benchmade 945. I figure this is kind of like buying an unnecessary motorcycle only on a smaller scale. What's concerning is my 945 is new and I'm already customizing my second one online, fantasizing swapping out parts and starting a collection of 945's. The little knife is so nice that I'm an automatic enthusiast.

My main complaint is the black Blade. Would have preferred a stonewash finish as the"black" coating has worn unevenly and pisses me off when I look at it. Perhaps I could remove the back finish somehow. Any suggestions or should I consider the uneven black honor marks.

I never had an issue with the omega springs either. The existential crisis on the other hand...

Hi, Pete. There is a song I like to sing myself as we stare out over a Nietzschian Abyss of an uncertain and distressingly indifferent future: "Dust in the Wind...all we are is dust in the wind. Nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky...and all your money won't another Benchmade buy. Dust in the wind."

Ada sit. Ada stay. Ada don’t be Russian. Quality content as usual Pete. Thanks for getting me to laugh in a rough time.
I have two benchmade knives. A north fork that’s never had an issue with its omega springs in five years and a bugout that has broken two springs in less than three years. Similar amounts of pocket time. I’m not sure if it varies knife to knife or model to model, but it has soured me on the axis lock. I like the bugout, but it's not worth sending back to Benchmade every year or so for maintenance.

FYI: I’ve found the 940cf handle so light it’s blade heavy. The imbalance lead me to often drop the knife...being use to the standard 940 & 943’s. The CF is my least favorite of the 940 series.

I tried out the 940s at the store the other day....ended up with the 940 original it has the best feel to them all IMO.

Wish they still made the 943’s...I get more use from the narrower-poky blade.

@Omega Springs... first off, you have 2, never broke one but I assembled my knife with only one and it works (you have to pay a bit attention to the lock up). The knife even works with no omega spring, just stick a wood sliver in.
I think most people worry way too much about those springs.
Personally, I think you should worry more about liner-/frame-locks and cutting yourself when closing the blade (especially in a stressful situation)... and that is pretty much a no-worry.

I am wondering - what happened with beloved Spyderco Chef? If it is no longer an option for EDC due to lots of nice knives available now on the market?

Don’t worry Pete, when the vacuum decays, the entire universe will end. Hell, it may have already started and the bubble just hasn’t hit us yet. More good news, it’ll be so instantaneous no one will have time to react!
