  • The Pope of Greenwich Village is a 1984 American film starring Mickey Rourke, Eric Roberts, Daryl Hannah, Geraldine Page, Kenneth McMillan and Burt Young.
In an Italian neighborhood of Greenwich Village, cousins Charlie, a maître d' with aspirations of someday owning his own restaurant, and Paulie, a schemer who works as a waiter, have expensive tastes but not much money. Paulie gets caught skimming checks, and he and Charlie are both fired. Now out of work and in debt, Charlie must find another way to pay his alimony, support his pregnant girlfriend Diane, and try to buy a restaurant.
Paulie comes to Charlie with a "can't-miss" robbery, involving a large amount of cash in the safe of a local business. Charlie reluctantly agrees to participate, and they manage to crack the safe with help from an accomplice, Barney, a clock repairman and locksmith. But things go sour, resulting in the accidental death of police officer Bunky Ritter, who had been secretly taping "Bed Bug" Eddie Grant. Charlie soon learns that the money they stole belongs to Eddie.
The mob figures out that Paulie is involved, and not even his Uncle Pete, part of Eddie's crew, can help him. One of Paulie's thumbs is severed as punishment.
Diane leaves Charlie and takes his money to support their unborn child, while Paulie is forced to work as a waiter for Eddie. He gives the mob Barney's name but initially refuses to identify Charlie as the third man involved. However, under pressure, he is forced to rat on his cousin. Barney leaves town and Charlie mails him his cut of the loot. And when Charlie makes $20,000 on a horse, things begin to look up.
Charlie prepares for a showdown with Eddie, armed with a copy of the tape that the police officer made. But at the last moment, Paulie puts lye in Eddie's coffee. Then he and Charlie casually walk away from Greenwich Village.

I met Eric Robert’s at a film festival. He and his wife were so friendly… he walked up to me and said “ Hi I’m Eric”. I said “ Cop shit his pants”! At first he didn’t get it but then he did. A really nice man..

Pope of Greenwich Village is one of those cinematic keepers you can watch once a year for the rest of your life. Rourke and Roberts are a perfect match but the cinematography and direction are also perfect for this film.

I agree man. It's almost like he IS Paulie. Only somebody that could play somebody that fucked up that accurately REALLY has to be.... that fucked up. There has to be a reason he never made it big... I dunno.... A fucking classic man.... I mean to have any performance THIS incredible is a work of art that rivals the Mona Lisa...

I like how they play the Irish music to match the characters in this scene, and Summer wind to match who the main characters are playing, although they are actually Irish in real life. Also of course, the city streets as a backdrop, and my hometown favorite Monmouth Park. What a Movie!

There truly is no price you can put on a moment of laughter like this. Paulie reminds of the most atrocious and horrible person I ever had to endure, but every so often he would have the most incredible moments of hilarious revenge and all kinds of other nonsense, occur from totally nonsensical, all out of proportion schemes that would leave me dead from laughing so hard. I'll also admit those random 100 seconds of uniqueness/uncontrollable laughter do NOT cancel out the other 23 hours, 58 minutes and 20 seconds of every day of life.

I like the Parachute drop going on in the background. I was very small when My Paternal Grandfather passed away . He was very Young when He was in the Italian Army and fought at the battle of Adwa Abyssinia in 1896. He barely escaped capture with His Life. He was from Lonate Pozzola and came out to California North of San Francisco to work as a machinist and Blacksmith for the Railroad. I learned a lot from My Uncles about their experiences as infantrymen in WW2 all aspects of their service. I would like to have been able to ask My Grandpa about His . What they ate , what they thought about the War they were in , how He escaped capture after a major defeat in a unfamiliar land with enemies all around. Making His way to another Camp. All I know is that He Told My Dad , His youngest of five sons , that they ( the Italian’s ) had them ( the Abyssinians ) stacked like cordwood. He told My older Uncles ( My Grand parents also had Seven Girls. ) that there were so many and they just kept coming faster that they could shoot them. In the 1980’s I did a job for a old Italian Man who had been in the Italian Army in WW1 . He said the Italian Government still sent Him a check for His service
