Will the CompTIA A+ Certification Get You a Job? | 3 Years After Passing - Was it Worth It?

  • Will the CompTIA A+ certification get you a job? I've had this certification for about 3 years and I want to let you know if the CompTIA A+ helped my career or hurt it? What has been my experience during job interview with it?
    The CompTIA A+ is a popular entry level certification recommendation. However, will it actually get you a job? In this video I talk about it's affect on my career certification and if I would recommend it to people looking to break into IT.

I was majoring in IT at a local cc and almost gave up on the field altogether, seeing how I lost the motivation after not being able to keep up with a course that was moving a bit too fast for me, and I honestly really didn't have the convenience of time to keep up with school anyway. Fast forward today, I've been telling myself 'don't give up just yet', so I did my research and found a few online courses that are specifically for passing the Comptia A+, and at my own pace. Right up my alley! No prerequisites, no jibberish, just straight forward courses to help pass the exam. Also, girl you are beautiful! Great video! I have 10 yrs in govt customer service & a Bachelors Degree. I just want a change in careers. Ive been watching sooo many videos and have read so many comments that it's been hard to make a decision. Some people say Yes the A+ will land u ur first job and some people say that No. Certifications aren't worth it that these companies want experience. I was recommended to get my Security Plus Cert first. But after further research, without me having any IT 💻 experience it seems a if A+ would be my best bet to try to get my foot in the door 🚪 and get a Help Desk job without any experience. I just don't want to get it and I end up having a hard time getting a job because i don't have any experience.

      I had the same dilemma when I was deciding on mine! I’ve noticed a lot of the people who say it’s not worth it have been in the industry for years and are in more senior positions. When you are first transitioning the A+ is so helpful! Especially since it gives you something technical to include on your resume. You are definitely better off having the knowledge that comes with the A+ than without it. Of course while you’re studying you can still apply though! I’m going to do a video soon about how to market your LinkedIn and resume while transitioning since I’ve gotten questions on that lately so definitely keep an eye out for that.

      For videos Mike Myers on Udemy is great if you want a deeper dive or if you aren’t familiar with concepts. If you just need more of just a review or a quick lesson than Professor Messer is great! For books I used the Exam Cram book and I loved the practice test that came with them. You don’t have to read the whole book but if after doing the video course there’s concepts you want a better understanding of you can read the Exam cram chapter on it. Those were the resources I used for mine!

      You can get whatever certs you feel like doing regardless of whether you have a college degree. Many people I work with have degrees and certs.

    I have years of Customer service, Now recently Administration (Auditing sales 10 months+).
    I also didn't enjoy programming, and have a BSc In Computing (Programming heavy ).
    I dont know what I want to do, I think Comptia A+ may help steer me in the right direction
    I'm getting older (reached my 30s)

      The A+ can definitely help if you want to go the technical route. But also with your background there's plenty of less technical jobs that your administration background could help with like program management

    • @DomsTechChat
      @DomsTechChat  Před 3 lety +3

      Shouldn’t be a problem! Some places might require a degree but a lot of entry level positions do not. I only had a 2-year degree when I got my A+ and was able to get a job

      I am in school right now for IT. I have talked to my success coordinator and my mentors and some of them have degrees and some just have certs. They said they look at the certs usually but there are them certain employers that do require degrees.

      Absolutely! I actually worked at Geek Squad for a few months before my first help desk job. I would suggest he look at desktop support roles in the area. With his experience he should be able to get call backs he might just need to fine tune his resume

    All due respect, Computer Science it more related to coding than Comptia A+. So it makes sense. College is not needed to enter IT. In fact a lot of fields prefer experience over college degrees, with some exceptions.
