What you've done is counterbore the muzzle. Basically, you are cutting the crown back to the lands & grooves, without shortening the barrel. The Soviets often did this to Mosin Nagant rifles, since the steel cleaning rods often beat up the all-important crown. That it got better than before the damage is, I think, dumb luck since you'd have to have the counter bore perfectly square to the axis of the barrel, and the crown would have to be bur-free. Better than the damaged crown is to be expected, but better than factory is extremely fortuitous.
I’ve always heard the term “crown” but had no idea how severe the damage to it would impact accuracy. I also own some historical rifles, a few great Mosin Nagants, a Spanish-American War Argentine Mauser, etc. and they all have matching numbers/original barrels - but immaculate crowns and accuracy at range. It’s insane how well these older gene treated their rifles.

Crown makes no difference to accuracy in multiple other reports
I would change that crappy vortex scope before anything else
I do not know if it helps (or damages) my barrels but I polish the crown of every one of them.
Sounds curved.
I remember that scene in GI JANE where they were putting condoms over the barrels to waterproof them. Would something like that effect your grouping?
The air being pushed ahead of the bullet will blow the condom off before the bullet exits the muzzle.
Dropping it like that didn’t affect the scope at all, but it affected the crown? I’m not saying that it didn’t affect the accuracy because the crown is different but I think you would at least take the scope off to the scope so that you know it’s not the scope that’s been set off by the impact
The nice thing about our one piece scope mounts is you can bang it around and it will still hold your zero.
Titanium muzzle brake don’t need to worry about it

Bullet never touches the crown the crown form leaving gasses behind the bullet the bullet never touches it
I don't understand why defects on the outside of the barrel, which doesn't directly touch the bullet, can impair function?
