I get exactly what you're talking about, BUT in this context I'm pretty sure she just picked the worst possible, pandering-ass way to see current game demographics, because while gaming is inherently inclusive, as a black dude, you notice quickly that games themselves still aren't THAT inclusive. The majority of the time I "see myself" in a game its either some shitty blaxploitation-adjacent villain, drug kingpin, gangster, or the "black guy with Kilmonger dreads". Its nice when I can either create a character that looks like me or I can at least pick one that's not just a thinly-veiled white nerd with the features slightly changed and a brown coat of paint slapped on (Like the dude from that Saints Row remake). But with all that said, I'm a gamer at heart, so I'm still gonna feel like a hero whether my character's black, white, or UNSC-green, so long as they're written well.

I think we would all love to see a more robust character palette for both player characters as well as npcs. I also feel there should be more options for character pallets. I mean how many games have pallets for people who have albinism or vitiligo? Creatable disabled characters? But, I don't think we should be excluding people to include people. I say include everyone in a natural way. I want games to have all peoples of all differences. That said, there should not be such emphasis put on their race or gender or any other difference that it becomes pretty much the characters only defining characteristic, nor something so heavily showcased it takes away from the scenes they are in. Raise your hand if you're *not a white man*. If it was about minorities, why not "Raise your hand if you're a minority"? Because it's about exclusion. They do not care about inclusion, we've seen plenty of proof of that. Second reason is there's absolutely no way a competent head of marketing would not know this would blow up. Either this post was made intentionally, or this person is severely incompetent in regards to the job she's supposed to do. Either way it still shows the mindset of the head of marketing. And I think that's what people are really angry about, not necessarily the tweet itself but the kind of mindset a person would need to think it's ok to post something like that.

Referring to the first few minutes of the video:
One of the reasons why people are jumping on her tweet, even if it seems relatively minor to other things people say on the topic, is that it's pretty much been evident that you can't allow these people to take an inch, or they'll take a mile. The reason we're in the situation we're in now is because people avoided confronting these people for so long.
People are fed up with "tolerating" things that appear to be tolerable.
Edit: To add to this, Asmon is acting like people are dumping a tremendous amount of energy into this. They really aren't, other than, ironically, the people (like Asmon) who are milking it for content. Most people see tweets like this, and recognize who's saying it if they happen to be in a position where their name is noteworthy. If any action is taken, it's usually the simple act of avoiding things that this person has worked on or has any kind of influence with.

@@Groza7989Because it's not about empowering *women*. It's about being 'inclusive' to all, including trans people.
They figure that making the 'women' in games attractive makes the women who don't look like that feel bad, and makes trans women feel dysphoric.
So making the women in games less 'conventionally attractive' hits two intersectional birds with one stone. AND it also functions to make the games less appealing to straight white men, the least oppressed group in intersectional theory.
It does make sense, but you have to understand the theory that drives their actions.
Personally I'm also fairly certain the less ideological aspect that helps drive this is that AAA games don't want to become Overwatch - known more for their porn than for being a good game. This kind of stuff really started becoming commonplace in mainstream games a couple years after Overwatch came out. Heck, even Overwatch is trying to discourage it too, just look at Venture's design.
Thus we end up with boring, uninspired, lowest common denominator characters who end up trying to look like the 'average' woman in the west. Overweight, unhappy, edgy haircuts and numerous tattoos/piercings. Which of course doesn't work as games are at their core, power fantasies not meant to reflect the real world and it's people or issues.
Woke types aren't trying to make bad games, it's just a consequence of their worldview and why we're starting to see the long overdue backlash to woke gaming groups. People just want good games again, it's been too long since good AAA games at fair prices was the norm.

I'm sure you can construct a similar idea around the people who complain about minority representation; people complaining about posters in Dead Space remake, on top of nicole no longer being a hot young adult but a more appropriate (And closer to the actor) physical look for the role of CMO.
      Or Saga Anderson just existing.

Her post absolutely deserves backlash. She's doing two things: telling us what the corporate priority is (which affects all products they control, e.g. games), and virtue signaling on the basis of socio-political agenda (something I think any corporation deserves to be lambasted for regardless of which side it is). Keep your politics out of my games, simple as.

What virtue signaling? The fact they want to have more none white male characters represented in games in a non stereotypical token representation? Do you care if the main character of your game isn’t a white guy, no? Then why get mad?

    • @AnonningAnon

@thekurtrussell4007 Sorry to tell you, but unless that character is well written, I don't even want to see it. As a gay man, when I see gays that have only gay stereotypes as a personality, it's fucking annoying and I'm sure other minorities find it the same with their own groups.
Diversity writting is stereotypical af. The character being male, female, black, asian, white, trans, gay, lesbian, bi, straight, etc should NEVER take priority over the character's story as a whole or over their personality, unless the story is literally about that part of themselves, but even then, a character shouldn't be just a walking stereotype.

@@thekurtrussell4007 It's the opposite. It's forced representation of token characters due to DEI and also politics. There's always been characters that aren't white in gaming since the 90s. I mean do you want to go back to the first Streets of Rage in the 1990s and play as Adam? What about all the fighting games? Eddie Goro is pretty much the most famous character for Tekken 3 lol. Even in RPGs with the likes of Barrett. One of the biggest GTAs is black protag. Bro how far back do you want to go? What qualifiers work? Isn't 30+ years acceptable?
This is just modern day virtue signaling politics. People are getting fed up of it.

@@thekurtrussell4007 Wow, CZcams deleted my comment lmfao. Apparently, I can't say I'm g4y (proper writing of it) out loud or it gets filtered. Thanks CZcams.
Anyways, div3rsity writing is always bad. Nothing annoys me more than g4y (or any minority group) characters that are walking stereotypes, because they were last minute inserts. Your character's personality should NOT be a stereotype of something that only represents a tiny portion of a person as a whole. People are more complex than their s3x, r3ligion, r4ce, politics, etc. To make a character less than a person as a whole (a walking stereotype) is to admit you think of those minorities as less than people. This is why you should make characters that thoughtfully fit their story as a person (which determines how their personality will be affected), not just insert diversity in for brownie points.

Just because something happens a lot, to the point of being expected and unsurprising, doesn't make it still bad. That's called normalization (for better or worse).
And the reason the statement is a problem is not just because it is a "I'm not racist, _but_ ..." type of statement.
The issue becomes apparent when you look at what was even the point of this post.
It feels like social media is some peoples' "video game" (to put this in a perspective the audience might understand). It is the thing in which they engage with in a typical "antagonist" way. In a video game, you have some goal to accomplish, and the game puts up all the obstacles, and if you beat those obstacles you can "win". This is how they seem to treat facebook, instagram, and twitter/X.
They'll sit in the tub, finish watching a few cat videos, get riled up from their bias-served video feed from whatever service they use, and then decide "Alright, I'm going to play my game now", and post wild takes.
It smacks of "Women! Amirite, guys?" type posts. Nothing was going on, no one asked for an opinion, and it's not pertinent to anything in particular. Just.. "announce an opinion" that you _know_ "your side" will agree with, and "your enemy" will rag on.. and then feed off that. Ok, how many 'attacks' did I get? Can I call them harassment? Maybe I should respond to a few to get them to freak out more. All my buddies will come defend me and oh would it be so good if we can maybe take down some "bad guys". *Self-righteous dopamine rush starts to hit.*
Crap.. no one liked what I said? Even some of my buddies won't defend me this time? Retreat! Private the account! Wait until it blows over...
Don't even care if it is a racist comment or not. It's the "idiot soapbox" that needs to stop.
This kind of issue still needs to be called out. Not "the sky is falling", but it should still be shamed where possible to push back the 'normalization'.
I agree, freaking out over racism here is dumb. Telling her to shut her trap and stop chasing the self-righteous fix is the better approach.
