My dad has this exact show on VHS (since ripped to DVD). Each year, we watch this show and due to a programming error, the show starts taping where the Chipmunks sing "Sleigh Ride." Right after that song is this, and it puts a feeling of warmth in my heart.

Barry Manilow is a true showman and mega-producer. The title of the song intrigues me as there is another song with the same title of "Merry Christmas Wherever You Are", in which Judy Collins did an excellent version, and contains the line "Merry Christmas wherever you are, all men are brothers under one star". There are a surprising number of songs in recorded music that have the same title, but are different songs, such as this one done by Barry Manilow. Two other examples I am able to think of include "Heartbreaker", the Dionne Warwick mega-hit, her biggest international hit from 1982 and the completely different "Heartbreaker", itself a hit for Pat Benatar in 1980, and "Time After Time", the Great American Songbook classic from 1947 performed by many, including Frank Sinatra and many female singers, such as Dame Shirley Bassey, and decidedly different than the 1984 Cyndi Lauper hit of the same name that was covered very well on "Solid Gold" by singing solo host in that 1984 era.
As for Barry Manilow, he is his own song factory and songwriter and album producer who helped give a huge lift to Dionne Warwick for her second album named "Dionne", that helped to usher in her 1980s hits and both duetted well on "Run To Me" on her 1985 "Friends" album, a song that The Bee Gees wrote and first released in 1972. The Bee Gees had written a lot of music that they chose Dionne Warwick for specifically, such as "Heartbreaker", in which they sing the chorus and the long, beautiful, poignant ballad, "Yours", from the Heartbreaker album that they entirely produced.
Barry Manilow has made his mark and some.
