Thanks for your content Jane. I started ironing for people then cleaning houses when I was 22. I'm 54 now and I've earned a good living from it. I get my work now through word of mouth but originally from leafleting areas I wanted to work in. I'm about to train to become a Nail Tech which I will do from home to bring in some cash. 9-5 never suited me. I'm a free spirit and end up being disruptive in an office or employed environment. I've recently sold the contents of my parents house as they both pass away in the last few years and I have to say I found the selling to be quite a ball ache, very labour intensive and some customers were problematic, I found that all quite stressful. Thanks again

People always want someone reliable when it comes to cleaning and ironing. I am not surprised you get a lot of work through word of mouth. Yes, the odd problem customers on eBay, but not that many. I just take it on the chin and try to move on. Different if you are selling your own stuff, though.

Always enjoy listening to your thoughts/ideas, Jane. Totally get the need to jettison the 9-5. I've pretty much always been self employed, although admittedly never made much money from it (ie a bit less than if I had been in a job). Was an academic editor for over a decade; it worked pretty well and I had 'staff' for bit, but started getting burnt out, then Covid hit. Have found it very difficult to get motivated to do it again, although I do now take on smaller bits of work to keep me afloat. Currently thinking of what to do next as have to wait 8975 years before I get the state pension.

I think that's a good idea. It's nice to have a bit of structure to your day, too.

Ok everyone-How ate you paying for your health insurance. I never even had a cavity until age 63. Then cancer. Each chemotherapy was $10,000. How do you handle this?

Wow, it’s very tough in the US. We are very fortunate to get free healthcare in the uk mostly - we pay from our taxes of course but don’t have to find a huge chunk like that

With the money we pay in taxes in the US we should have free healthcare and it shouldnt be attached to our jobs.

@@mynewjourney6803 absolutely right. At the very least, people shouldn’t just be abandoned by the government in their time of need.
