  • Mount Sill via North Couloir, North Fork Big Pine Lakes , 05-30-23 | Ricardo Soria
I was the only person in the entire basin after the end of the holiday weekend, which is insane for Big Pine Lakes. I camped at Second Lake after being forced to drink my summit beer because it exploded due to the elevation (honestly, I wouldn't have had a summit beer in these conditions anyway). The plan was to camp at Third Lake, but a couple of backpackers in the parking area noted there weren't any dry spots there yet.
Started for the peak at 6:10 am. I went in the direction of Sam Mack Meadow but started to ascend toward the Palisade Glacier (as the crow flies) at the first snow bridge near the inlet of Third Lake. Continued traversing the cirque until reaching the chute toward Glacier Notch. I thought I might quit here due to poor conditions, but it went.
I reached Glacier Notch and told myself that if the snow was getting too slushy, I'd turn around. I could tell there was some warming, but I reached Apex Notch with no real issue.
I had written into my itinerary that I'd turn around at this notch due to the amount of snow still lingering on this arguable class 4 portion of the route. When I arrived, it looked sketchy, and I was actually hoping to have a reason to turn around, but after stepping foot on the route, the snow was holding. GREAT (Sarcasm)!
The remaining class 3 scramble to the peak was relatively painless, and I reached the summit at 11:46AM. The peak is as beautiful as the book says. There is more to look at on the Summit of Mount Sill than any other peak I had ever been on and with the amount of snow remaining in the Sierra, it really felt like the Range of Light.
However, I didn't get that feeling of elation I normally get at a summit. The snow was still warming, and I had to descend some steep terrain.

It looks like I incorrectly put a title screen that says "Palisade Crest" at 8:45. Whoops! I think what I meant to point out was a portion of the Sierra Crest and confused the title with the Palisade Traverse that includes the peaks in the video at that point. Anyway, thanks for watching and I hope you don't really care. Ta-ta!

I'm impressed you're climbing the Palisades solo. I'd probably second guess myself and chicken out. Nicely done!

That happens from time to time. Those efforts don't make good videos though. Failure is critical to success .

@@luciano136 agreed. If this channel gets popular enough, I'll definitely create some videos to speak to the difficulties of logistics and failures. For now, it's party time.

@@trvrsoutdoors Enjoy brotha! I used to go to the Sierra all the time; videos like these would've been super helpful. Main source was summitpost back in the day, but that site is all but dead.

Gorgeous views, pretty tricky and tedious descent through loose rocks, I guess your good conditioning helps a lot. descents seem tougher in the rocky steep Eastern Sierra.Great video !!

I still have to do Mt Sill. Looks fun. I think I'll do it in the fall though. I don't enjoy walking and sinking in deep snow.

Haha yeah the trek down was a little brutal. At least it was nice and soft on my knees.

Wild in that much snow, but good snow conditions higher up. I have seen videos with less snow on the traverse which looked uglier. Above the traverse, there is a characteristic rock spike were you turn right on the down climb, but someone also put a small cairn there.

I kept thinking, WHEN is this (seemingly exhausted) guy going to turn around? (Especially assuming you were also setting up the shots showing you approaching … necessitating you double-ascending some sections.) Congrats for making it, and bringing us armchair alpinists along for the climb.

It's funny. I was like 'wow this is the gnarliest snow traverse I've ever done', but now that I've read my own trip report, it was basically the same conditions then only I didn't have visibility 😅. Younger me was nuts.

The rock is not loose there. Doing it with snow and ice is way nastier, though conditions were good for this video. Plenty of good snow but not deep. Good crampon purchase. Good conditions for self arrest with the ice ax.

Thank you. yes. I came down the exact same way. It wasn't as rough as I thought it would be. Still stable.
