  • The post WTC adventures continue with my first trip to the Palisade group, the tallest things I clapped eyes on during my initial visit to Kings Canyon last year. The focus of this trip was the Glacier Notch route up Mount Sill coming from some serious off-trail work on the South Fork of Big Pine Creek. You can see the gory details of the trip here: www.gaiagps.com/public/pSolVa...
I mentioned my intermediate mountaineering goal in the episode, the Palisade Traverse, and you can get an idea of what that expedition will be like here: www.summitpost.org/palisade-t...
The music in this episode is Moby (feat. Gwen Stefani) - South Side (Hybrid Dish Pump Mix)

Good job on knowing your limits! I do a lot of class 3 scrambling, and a couple class 4. I'm still here, so I guess I paid attention to my limits as well. Your presentation is funny!

Amazing how the L shaped snowfield below the Col is gone that year. It happens, but is rare.

Class 4 is a combination of big exposure plus harder rock scrambling. You can have a lot of exposure but very safe moves, and is should be thought of as 3 or so. An example is a lot of Middle Pal on the standard route, or the catwalk on the Le Conte route on North Pal.
That short class 4 traverse on Sill is not that hard. Its about confidence on rock. The trickiest part is the scramble up on the other side to the ridge line. You just need practice on rock.

Wow! Thanks for sharing this informative video. I like how you push yourself, but not push yourself too much. -I've hiked Mt Agassiz, which is at my limit. And I've hiked to Finger Lake, which is a beautiful lake. Keep exploring!

Sill from the South Fork is not that hard. There is just one harder section, and it's short. You can expand past Agassiz

Great video! I've wanted to hike/climb Mt. Sill especially since a year ago when I hiked the numbered lakes out of the North Fork of Big Pine creek. I saw a posting in the California 14ers FB page about a guy and his son who climbed Sill partially via the same route you did. They camped at Elinore Lake. I am pretty sure they went over Scimitar Pass and climbed the Southwest Chutes. From that lake to the summit and back was 6.2 miles and 15 hours.

That works. It's just very long, but the least difficult rock.

My hiking partner and I got turned around exactly where you stopped on Sill. The following month I summited Sill via the Bishop Pass to Sill route on the All Trails app.

Nice! Yeah, the South Lake route over Bishop Pass is the only one I've seen that allows Class 2/3 access to any of these peaks, it's on my list for next season!

@@erinteachman6489They are all Class 4 from the west side, except for the very long schlep to Sill from the Southwest, which is 2-3.

Middle Pal is also non-technical and mostly class 3
