  • In this video I show you how to fix an aquarium canister filter.
    I look at the most common issues and how to fix them :
    - Leaking filters
    - Noisy filters
    - Just plain broken filters
    - Bubble in the outake
    Stay tuned until the end to watch a demonstration of me setting them back up on their aquariums.
    I wish it went better... but nothing is THAT simple in real life.
    Enjoy!

    I love listening to your perfect English with a Quebecois accent.... I'm an x Montrealer. Re The Marineland filter, I had 2 problems with the filter. The first was the primer button-----very hard to depress. The second was a leaking filter head. Well, I emailed Marineland, and after sending them a product Number inside the motor housing they SENT ME A NEW FILTER. Apparently they had a problem with them. GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE.

    Great video a lot helpful tips. For leaking canisters that have UV lights, their is also a seal (o-ring) on the light housing on the inside of the head, that unscrews anti clock wise and is easy to spot the seal around where it screws in. Can tell if this housing is leaking by seeing if the light bulb glass is filled with water. Have a great day. :)

    Hello from England 🇬🇧,
    Interesting video, thanks.
    I've just tried to start my Fluval 305 after a few years, the lid doesn't SIT properly & water comes our of the gap, is that just due to the rubber ring?
    If so what type of lubricant shall I use?
    Thanks.

    What do you do in a situation where the canister keeps sucking in air from somewhere and blowing bubbles every few minutes. I have checked and no air is going in from the input hose. I've even put teflon plumbing tape on the nozzles of the hose adaptor and the o-ring of the lid to make an airtight seal to prevent air entering from there but it still seems to be sucking in air from somewhere. Any ideas where else I could check for an air leak?

      @matambale Před 3 lety

      I just added a comment about burping Rena filters, Steve - might be helpful. These filters are great, but every once in a while, air can get into the system. With mine, the intake mechanics inside the tank can separate and suck in air.

      Great idea. If you end up near say a Princess Auto or an industrial supply shop, check on a a tube of gasket or "O Ring," lube. It is specially designed for giving seals a new life. • @matambale
    @matambale Před 3 lety +2

    Sometimes, at least on those API/Rena filters, when the filter gets really noisy - rattling like the impeller is broken - it's actually just because air got into the pump intake and you just need to 'burp' the system. This can happen if the hard plastic intake tube in the tank somehow separated from the intake pipe going to the filter. You'll want to fix that first.
    'Burping' the filter it while it has water in it (and is turned off) is a little bit tricky - just give a couple of those side clips a lift for a second or two, watching for the water to rise to the top inside the filter, and quickly close them again before it starts spilling out the sides. Put a towel around it first, like I forgot to. This is a lot easier to do if the filter box is clear and you can see the water level.
    If the intake pipe is empty of water at this point because the intake siphoning was interrupted by air, you can unscrew that cap on the top of the intake pipe and funnel some water into it, refilling it, and then screw the cap back on. This will make the system start up more quickly when you plug it back in.
    As mentioned, make sure the hard plastic intake tube that goes inside the tank, is properly attached to the intake pipe, otherwise it's just going to suck air in again.
    Did I mention towels?

    I have an issue and need professional help. I have a Polar Aurora Free Media 4-Stage External Canister Filter with 9-watt Light, 525 GPH and I followed all instructions and it works fine but i notice from the start that it runs for 8 to 10 minutes and then stops for the same time. Then the cycle repeats itself. My aquarium water is fine after testing but I am concerned since everyone says it must work continuously. I contacted the company and they sent me a replacement motor cover but no change. What else could be the problem?

    Love your approach Richelle, simple and straight forward. I had an impatient Sunday once, where I was sucking like a Catholic on her wedding night, but no syphon whatsoever. Lots more sucking and swearing, only to discover that the hose running across the tank brace had come loose from the inlet pipe. Turned out the pipe which was quite old had stretched and gone hard, so worked loose easier than it would normally.
    I'm with you though, the ribbed Fluval hose is a P.I.T.A, and always switched over to the smooth tubing.

      I cannot thank you enough for taking the time to write your comment. I could not figure out how to get the flow going on my filter. I had cleaned it and removed sponge material that lessened the flow... Nothing seemed to work. I followed all the directions in the manual. I've had my rena filstar canister filter for years almost 10 and never had this issue with it before. I always fill it up as much as possible in the canister and then the intake where there is a removable lid. I have never ever read anywhere in the manual or even trouble shooting online Reddit Quora CZcams about lifting the outtake above the water line while plugging back in. Truly so grateful for your comment. Thank you. My aquarium is saved.
