  • I just filled one of my tanks in the store with my Pseudotropheus demasoni juvies and I couldn't help but to make this video!
    I also share some information on this fascinating fish.
    I also am celebrating (a little early but I can't help it) my channel soon reaching 2500 subs.
    Thank you all for your continued support! You're the best!

    Excellent video and info on Demasoni. Extra bonus being an attractive young lady. Been considering trying breeding this fish. Going to be a challenge but I’m experienced breeding Mbuna so I like the challenge. Planning on purchasing about 20 very young fry preferably 3/4”-1”. Another challenge I see is finding them that small.

    I currently have a Demasoni mum (named Artemis - aged about 14 months)and her 11 children (aged 6.5 months) in a 29 gallon. Amazingly they are all getting along famously! Absolutely no aggression. The really great part is there were originally 11 babies (totally unexpected) that I managed to rescue from a 60 G I used to own and put in a breeder box back in August. I fully expected to loose a few. Amazingly I have lost - NONE. The Demasoni Dad is currently in a smaller tank on his own. I did try reintroducing him to mum back in September (at this point the babies were all in a 5G on their own). This unfortunately did not go well, and now I think I know why thanks to your video - (couples). Amazingly there were only 5 fish in the 60 when she first got "pregnant". The male DM, her, a female Venustus, a female Kenyi, and a female Electric Blue Acara. Yes - I know - far from ideal - It was HELL. I was very uneducated and did the Noah's Ark tank thing as i wanted friends for my one EBA who I mistakenly believed was African. In no time my dozen various African Cichlid fish (3 Demasoni, 4 Auratus, 3 Kenyi, 1Venustus(and the EBA who came with the tank and I had been told was African - long story lol) were all getting killed or being rehomed. And I was down to 5 fish in the 60 G and was on the brink of rehoming ALL the Africans I still had and keeping only the EBA - getting more South Americans - when I discovered the Demasoni babies!
    NEVER AGAIN. Anyway now I have things under control. The 29 G Demasoni tank. And a 23 G Fluval Vista tank with a pair of EBAs and their fry. And two smaller tanks with single males. And another 16 G tank with non Cichlids...Ok sorta of under control lol. I am wondering if I should try to put Dad back with his family now that the young are 6 months old and almost as big as him. I feel VERY sorry for him as he is obviously not happy. Plus; if I did that it would be one less tank to care for and I am in my late 50s so much as I love my fish it is a strain physically doing tank cleaning and lifting multiple buckets. The other male is a Kenyi and he is UBER aggressive and happy on his own so I am content with soon getting him his own fancy 16 G (Fluval Vista 16 - a REALLY nice tank BTW - highly recommend. The EBA one is also a Vista (23) I just wish they made a Vista 32 or 37 as I would be all over that. Much better quality and easier care then standard tanks.) This would leave me with only 4 tanks, a bit more manageable. I am just worried that he might upset the apple cart. However unlike the male Kenyi who was a BEAST - tormenting every single fish including 13 inch common plecos (really); and I know can never ever be with other fish as he will kill anyone he is put with the male Demasoni (Vinnie) is not a bad fish. The worst thing he ever did was chase the female around, nip her fins and make her hide from him - when it was just them and the EBA in the 29 G. I am hoping that after 4 months on his own watching videos and being bored he will welcome the chance to be with the others. He would be the newcomer. All of the other have been in their current tank for 4 months now. And, there are multiple fake plants, decor etc etc. Opinions?

    Great info, thank you! I have 4 pseudotropheus demasoni (I think 2 male and 2 females) and 3 yellow labs in a tall gallon bowed 37 aquarium. They seem to spend 95% of their time at the bottom of the tank and there is a great deal of chasing with the demasoni. Should I add another 2-4 to break it up a bit? Is 37 gallons enough for that an extra 2-4 fish? I have some large dry rocks with lots of caves and hiding places.

    Hello Richelle, good video! I will soon start a mbuna aquarium and I would like to know that they species would be compatible with dimesoni in terms of sizes and diet. I have a 55 gallon and I would like species that are relatively small.

    • @QuebecCichlides
      @QuebecCichlides  Před 6 lety

      Hi Audrée,
      I'll help you more in depth when you come to visit.
      Most Mbunas are compatible with eachother.
      I would steer clear of the Labeotropheus, Petrotilapia and most Metriaclima, which can get pretty big compared to the P. demasoni.
      Other than that, there aren't many restrictions.
      I grouped the Mbunas on my list together to help with compatibility, check out the 1st table :
      www.quebec-cichlides.com/vivant?cat=1
      (If the website doesn't work, refresh a couple of times.... If it still doesn't work, it should by tomorrow, we're still dealing with the technical difficulties ☹ )

    • @QuebecCichlides
      @QuebecCichlides  Před 6 lety +1

      Hi there,
      That can happen, they are aggressive to their own kind.
      Try adding them in schools and move the decorations around.
      If it's really bad, you can even isolate your dominant male in a isolation box to give the new guys time to take their place.
      When you re-integrate him, move the decorations around again.
      Good luck.

    Structure, structure and more structure. When you have a decent number of adults , right amount of structure you will soon have a Demosoni producing machine. When we are talking structure we are talking mega crevices and crannies. This is what works best . A full background of red lava stone. At that point you don't have to separate the holding females at all. The dominant Male will continue to dart out at rivals and potential moms but he will not pursue to the death. The caves buffer the aggression to an amazing degree. Fatalities literally are haulted under the right conditions. With proper set up one soon finds their tank an active and lively community of Demasoni of all sizes and stages of life living safely. Not making this up. However ,if because of the price, establishing all that lava stone may take a while ,try this alternative. Invest in a load of smaller clay pots and basically load them front to back at the rear of your tank with about a1/2 inch from the glass. Stack them as high as you are able. This will do nicely even though it wont look as natural. Demasoni will always chase each other around but aggression stops once the fish being chased darts out of view. Out of sight out of mind principle. It works wonders. And P.S. The female will often take her hatchlings into her mouth when she thinks there is danger. In and out in and out they go. It's important to remind ourselves that just because she does this we need not assume she is eating them. 🙂👍

      @QuebecCichlides  Před 6 lety

      Hi Tom. I wish! You're lucky to have gotten your hands on some saulosi.
      I used to have a colony that supplied for my store but this was years ago.
      Ever since then, I got some from my clients breeding but it's never the same.
      In many cases, the females would turn blue, even if they weren't mixed with any other species.
      The further you get from the original colony, they lose their signature dimorphism.
      All this to say, you have a precious fish right there. I wish you success with them. 😊
