Irresponsible? Yes. Worst King? No. The Shipwright made the North into a Naval power that could contend with the Lannister and Ironborn fleets. His shortsighted and quite frankly Stark-raving mad son destroyed what his father built and turned the North back into solely a land power. I would say Brandon the Burner is the worst king.

The books hint that the Night's King was a Stark and it's what I lean towards. I think it'll be revealed that the Starks have some sort of blood connection to the Others, as they seem to be the source of a lot of magical mysteries in the books. Of course, in the books all of the Stark children are Wargs of some ability and there's an apparent link between the Old gods, wargs, blood magic and the others that hasn't been delved into yet.

Cat negotiated the wobbly alliance with the freys at a price higher than they should’ve had to pay (and she herself knows Walter Frey is untrustworthy and stuff she’s alway mentioning it).
      Cat fails with renly.
She frees Jaime (which I’m pretty sure got a bunch of stark loyalists killed)

    • @R.O.Yvonne
      @R.O.Yvonne Před rokem +11

His mother was the cause of his family's downfall. She and her maester were the ones to convince Ned to go to King's Landing and send Jon to the wall. After Bran's fall, she completely neglected her other children and her duties, to the point Robb fruitlessly begged her to help him with running the North and raise Rickon.
She gets to King's landing a week before Ned, and decides to tell Littlefinger and Varys everything she knew about the conspiracy happening, the two people who she admitted were the least trustworthy in the entire city. Then she told Ned to trust and work with Littlefinger, and the fact she told him everything, Ned was forced to anyway.
Her arresting Tyrion caused Jamie to attack Ned, and Ned would have to say it was his order to assure she would be in less danger and make it seem like he doesn't have complete control over his household, which would surely be to the benefit to his enemies if they knew he has no control over his crazy wife.
She started the war by arresting Tyrion, eventhough 30secs before, she thought that they couldn't afford to go to war yet when they weren't ready. Even before she thought of going to the Vale or Riverun, doing the exact opposite what Ned told her to do. Then she took the most dangerous road to the Vale, one that even her father refused to traverse without "strength," resulting in 6 of the 12 of them dying. Then, just let him go with no proper escort, and if Tyrion were to die due to her incompetence, everyone she knew would feel Tywin's wrath. And her releasing Tyrion meant the North had no leverage over the Lannisters to not harm Ned and his daughters.
Littlefinger, who Catelyn told Ned to trust, stabs him in the back and convinces Joffery to have him executed.
She counseled Robb to apoint Lord Bolton as one of his advisors and lead part of his army.
She undermined Robb every step of the way to the point he refused to listen to her. Then she decided to tell him to keep Theon close.
She absolutely fails at getting either Beratheon brother on Robb's side, the only gain being Brianne and for Catelyn to get the hell away from Robb for a few months.
She gave the hand of her King-son and her youngest daughter to the Freys, for a bridge and a few soldiers. Nor to mention she thought that she was the best qualified person to talk to Walder, someone who has no respect for women, and the end result is that he plays her like a fiddle.
Her brother goes against Robb's explicit instructions and engages in battle with Tywin for a watermill and because he's jealous of his nephew, and that allows Tywin to receive the news about the attack on King's landing. While he's gone, Catelyn frees Jamie with only two people to escort him.
And there are many more things Catelyn did that sealed The Starks' fate.

I think those of the Stark who are involved in the 1000-year-war over the Sisters were often terrible people. The "rape of the Sisters" is remembered with deep hate by the people of the Sisters until the days of the War of the Five Kings, what speaks a lot. The records of the Sisters and Vale claim the northmen committed countless atrocities. Supposedly, they killed children and cooked them in pots, disemboweled men and wound their entrails around spits, executed three thousand warriors in a single day at the Headman's Mount, and Belthasar Bolton made a "Pink Pavilion" out of the flayed skins of a hundred Sistermen. It may have been done under the rule of Theon Stark (but that is not sure, he may just a king who fought later in the endless war).
And of course it is clear that the Starks took part in the legalized rape which lasted in the North until the days of Good Queen Alysanne who ended the right of the first night which was enforced in the North until that day. And of course the way in which the Starks became Kings of The North must have been full of betrayal, murder and wars in which they hardly had clean hands (they were surely not worse than others, but also not betteer).
So yes, there are quite a number of cruel Starks or Starks who did thing we may see as cruel i guess.

    • @Gotten1888
      @Gotten1888 Před rokem

I doubt they went that far however I think plenty of atrocities were commited, cannibalism would be a step to far, the Vale likewise commited attrocities in the place. There are some great essays at race for the ironthrone about how the starks became kings and in the vale as well.
Beating down the kings and taking their daughters for wives, killing males from the family, some good points that I didn't notice was that the Stark passing justice had the effect to associate the Starks with justice, people across the North would know that they represent justice.
The Wolf's Den was done for multiple reasons, one to show the Bolton;s that this is our land now, the name shows it to everyone, this land that belonged to the Bolton's now belong to us now. It also served to show the people that the Stark's would protect them, unlike their former rulers.
There is a theory that the lord's right to the first night was done to get bastards that would later be sacrificed to the others which would ensure no new war with them would break out.

Perhaps he had a vision in which he needed to sail west in order for the Stark family (or even the world) to survive. Perhaps the three eyed raven gave him this vision. Perhaps it truly was necessary for him to sail to wherever it was that he did. It was thousands of years before the main story begins, so we will really never know (until we see easter eggs of Brandon the Shipwright in Arya's sequel storyline)
In my opinion, all of the Starks were good characters (some gray). If we absolutely had to choose "The Worst Stark King", I'd choose Robb. Partly because we have way more to go off of. Not sticking to his vows and placing too much trust in the snakes around him resulted in the deaths of his men and his family members. However, it was all necessary in order for the true threat in The Night King to be stopped. I still think that Robb was a good King, but making a video with the title implying that there was some evil Stark King is sort of click-baity.

Seeing the Starks as the "good guys" is probably a bit two dimensional for the theme of asoiaf. At the end of the books, all of them face massive personality changes, some potentially for the worse. Sansa is learning to lie and spy with Petyr, Arya is on the cusp of joining a cult of assassins which don't tolerate ego or respect individual will, Bran is being trained with old, dark forces, Rikon is half-wolf and Jon will lose some if not most of his memories and personality when (if) Melisandre revives him

@@boozecruiser Which is exactly why I added the "(some gray)" part. Some of the Stark members are making questionable choices,. but for the better good (Sort of like Ned Stark lying to the people about Joffrey's lineage in order to save his daughters).
Sansa is learning to lie in order to survive, that is not evil. Arya is learning to kill in order to seek justice for those who have wronged her or her family. Bran is being manipulated by the three eyed raven (possessed, even.). Rikon being a half wolf like most Starks is sort of irrelevant as well as Jon being brought back to life.
We both agree that there are some gray characters in the mix. However, there are no "bad" Stark characters, from what we have seen. Little girls trying to survive included.

I have seen all kind of crazy and convoluted theories about why there must always be a Stark in Winterfell. For me most of them are nonsense I always preferred the most simple explanation, the Starks are a beacon of unity in the north and their presense there and good leadership has keept the north stable and united during many dark times in their history. As kings of winter they united the north under one banner and as kings of the north the Starks of Winterfell defended and protected the north from all manner of threats. Be it the devastating winters, the savages beyond the wall, the barbaric iron born, the andal invadors, internal threats such as the treacherus Boltons and a bunch of OTHER stuff. Even when the era of the Stark Kings came to an end with the arrival of Aegon the Dragon, Torrhen Stark chose his people over his crown and bent the knee for their sake. If the Starks of Winterfell had meet the same fate as the Gardeners, Hoares and Durrandons the north could could have fallen into civil war something they absolutely can not afford to do because of the winters that are always comming. Thus they continued their role but as lords instead of kings' the winter is coming but the starks are there to see the north through it.

For the people saying its Robb's fault for the North losing to the Lannisters, Catelyn was the cause of his family's downfall.
She started the war by arresting Tyrion, eventhough 30secs before, he thought that they couldn't afford to go to war yet when they weren't ready. Even before she thought of going to the Vale or Riverun, doing the exact opposite what Ned told her to do. Then she took the most dangerous road to the Vale, one that even her father refused to traverse without "strength", resulting in 6 of the 12 of them dying. Then just let him go with no proper escort, and if Tyrion were to die due to her incompetence, everyone she knows would feel Tywin's wrath.
Yes Robb ruined the alliance with the Freys, but it wouldn't have mattered if Catelyn's brother hadn't have pushed Tywin back and followed Robb's orders. Tywin would've been dead and Stannis would've taken over King's landing.
And there are.many more things Catelyn did that sealed The Starks' fate.
