Hyundai has just released a statement herein; "for immediate public release, we do not use recycled public toliet seats as our steering wheels."
They're not fooling anyone with that statement
Anymore
Recycled? It's a Hyundai, they're still using it...
😆
Yeah, that wheel looks rough.
Ray must feel like putting on a biohazard suit when getting in some of these cars.
That stuff on the steering wheel 🙄
100% dude…
Agreed, yuck!
no joke- ray should spray down the steering wheel. shifter door handles with disinfectant who knows what these people carry, have you ever sneezed when your driving with no tissue???? and touching several cars a day puts you in a higher risk category...just sayin
Wear gloves when entering a hazards location
Driving in Florida is a different experience everyone is from somewhere else and they all drive different!
Judging by the condition of the steering wheel I knew what the engine would look like before he opened the hood. The air filter is probably the one installed at the factory.
Valve cover gasket did not leak though.
@@loubakker5000 Hyundai know how to build stuff. 👌
@@KeithHeinrich valve cover gasket is a very common thing that is replaced on these 2.4s
That steering wheel needs some brake cleaner!!🤢
I was thinking the same thing. Looks like the owner has a vice like grip and abuses the horn. 😄
Remove wheel and launch into sun! 😄
She should go to the last place she gassed up, probs cap is still on top of the pump🤪
And it’s hers if there’s makeup all over it too.
@@Dirtyharry70585 And if it's a pervs car, that white stuff is probably another kind of residue... 🤣
Dude those Sonatas are part of that huge engine recall. I wouldn't touch that thing with the same air I touch.
😂
I'm AMAZED that you didn't check the air filter for being clogged! That would have been my FIRST check.
PS: My little brother bought the Excel 1.5 off my now 90 year old Dad.
Well over 400000 on the clock.
Suddenly went gutless, and nobody in the town where they lived could figure it out. 2nd gear on ordinary hills, etc.
I suggested dropping the exhaust, so they did that, and, (loud and proud), the car was off like a rat up a drainpipe.
The exhaust was given some sort of violent clean-out, and off she went.
Apparently still going strong at 480000, after a recent set of coils.
Bloody good.
0:40 that whistle was unmistakable, Engel - Rammstein :)
Wow! A fuel containment cap installation cliff hanger! I can't wait to see the exciting conclusion!
I know he left us hanging on that!! Besides cleaning the steering wheel the cap replacement would have been first
Thank you for making me laugh at the idea of installing the fuel cap being a highly technical and sophisticated procedure. 😆😂
Why didn't they take it to the dealership? If it's a 2017 it should still have power train warranty.
My guess is that they already took it to the dealership and the dealership said that you haven’t been doing oil changes or maintenance to this car so we are not covering anything.😂😂😂
I laughed so hard when he said “ to the scan tool”. Then pointed forward.
hey man love your videos, as far as the p1326 dtc code vehicle is in limp mode, and that is under recall from hyundai, they should take it to a dealer where they will perform an engine bearing clearance test and will most likely require a longblock under warranty, and as far as the intake your right about the runners stuck due to carbon buildup
oh yeah by the way I used to work at a Hyundai dealer
exactly i've run into this at least a dozen times
What the hell, bearings? I’m not an idiot but this sounds odd to me
Like the whole long block is shit quality and out of spec?
@@tacomas9602 the metal wasn’t cleaned of burs
@@tacomas9602 performed the bearing clearance test plenty of times, if it fails the test, they get submitted for an engine. It's up to hyundai if they approve it or not.
The code can also just be the knock sensor needing replacement. which is directly behind the intake manifold and fuel rail.
So the P1326 is something that needs to be dealt with by the dealer. We installed software that detects bearing knock, it alarms you, flashes the engine light and cuts power in order to get to safety in case bearing failure has occurred. Sometimes it's a false alarm and needs to be repaired at the dealer under the original campaign free of charge
Just what I was going to say.have same car, but not the sport . Intake runner like that one. If driven city mainly gets rusted. Punch it good on the highway and it will code. Knock code means knock sensor bad so the protector software kicks in
This vehicle already has the update because it came in with a flashing cel light I’ve seen ones that haven’t had the software update preformed almost always come in seized or knocking with no cel
@@richardtejeda3811 I know.... that is what the update is. So either the engine is knocking, or the sensor is faulty. Either way, it needs to go to a dealer....unless the customer wants to pay
I live in a state that sells 85 octane at the pump as regular at most gas stations. because of this there are a lot of Hyundai/Kia cars with the knock codes due to pinging.
makes diagnosing the issue with the flashing MIL so much more fun because nobody fills up with the right gas

Dang that knock sensor code omg at the kia store i work at it mean new engine
My wife had a 2014 Sonata that had the engine recall. The check engine light came on, and I stopped by a garage. The mechanic ran a scan and it read "Glow plug needs to be replaced". We dropped it off an a dealership. They had 15 engines to replace. 3 weeks later, we got the car back.
I have an employee who had a 13 Sonata. Driving down the highway the rod went thru the block. Hyundai gave him a loaner and he had it back in a couple of days. He finally traded it with almost 200k. It was the only issue he ever had with the car. Granted, it’s a big one, but it didn’t cost him a dime. They covered the towing and everything.
Dang 3 weeks to do 15 we do in my shop easily 5-6 engines a day
Glow plugs? So, Sonatas are diesel powered too? I didn't know that.😎😎
There's a recall on those GDI engines
I've mentioned this before but I'm amazed that people bring their cars in to be worked on in that condition. It's a direct reflection of the type of person that they are and is all too common today
Totally agree👈
I watch your videos every day Ray you're a awesome teacher for us shade tree mechanics that being said have yourself a Great Day.
Ray!! Your Do, do, do, do’s are funny and like I said before you do it everytime the phone rings. Funny stuff and I wait to see if you’re going to miss one, but you don’t. Funny stuff man! 😂🤣
I was looking forward to seeing this repair but it’ll be back hopefully. Looking forward to it
So let me get this straight, they are gunna leave with this car that Ray decided wasn't safe to drive cuz it just doesn't move... and keep driving it around until its fixed. Awesome
I can't believe if you have a problem like that you would go to a garage assuming the problem will be fixed in less than 2 hours to begin with.
"Florida Woman". 😝
look at the state of the car, they have no money. At least it wont take up space in the parking lot and it can be used to duck down to the local shops if needed until they can afford to fix it.
Ray was working at the bottom feeder garage.
@@BrutalHondurasJiffy Lube caused the trouble.
Will wonders never cease, a Kia with a Hyundai steering wheel.
Ray: Watch the P1326 Code!
That code, the flashing check engine light, and the lack of power means the car has gone into Engine Protection Mode. Connecting rod bearings are worn (as detected by the knock sensor).
Vehicle should not be driven, as the engine will soon seize.
Advise the customer to take it into a Hyundai dealer. She might qualify for a new engine, under a warranty extension on the engine. 😉
Also, as others have commented, at under 100K miles, and about 5 years (you said this is a model year 2017, didn't you), there may be factory warranty on the other stuff you picked up: intake runner actuation and EVAP codes (if the latter turns out to be more than a gas cap).
In this case, the best thing you can do for this customer is strongly advise her to bring it into a Hyundai dealer.
Enjoy your entertaining diagnosis style and honesty that you show in your videos.
Keep up the good work!
That escalated quickly
Yup, that's one of the reasons why I traded up my '16 Sonata to a '22 Santa Fe. Took great care of the car, had only 74k miles but the oil consumption started going up in Jan (was putting in 1-2 qts every week) , the oil pressure light kept flashing, car was starting to kick when accelerating, and then dealership wanted me to pay several hundred just to dx and fix the issue(s).
To those who don't know, the Tuscan shares the same engine (Theta) with the Sonata so avoid them at all costs cause Theta engines are crap.
A quick story Ray, I was in business for 40 years ( home renovations). First question people always ask is how many times did you not get paid. My answer is,I always got paid and that really surprises them but it’s very true. I believe amongst good work and diligence, I always looked for little things that were sure to cause problems sooner or later. I would always do these repairs free of charge and surprisingly most people wanted to pay for those repairs and I always was treated very nicely. I truly had an amazing career. This was after obtaining my master mechanics license and a 5000 hour apprenticeship.
Most important three things on every vehicle service?
Absolutely MUST be done, without fail...
Clean the rear windshield.
Oil the door hinges.
Clean the rear view mirror.
Happy customer, every, single, time.
Was your master mechanic license related to your home renovation career? 5000 hr apprentice is two and a half labor years, about what journey man electricians need for state recognition. What entity oversees the license you acquired?
Wow, you are a lucky person or full of it. No free lunch from me. No checks, no credit cards, and cash prepay before I even start a job. Customers always trying to run a scam!
@@MAn-ti3ul True that these days. There's even blogs on scaming techniques in various states . Calif has a bunch due to its consumer protect laws. Overall many more Cust flakes than Shops today.
@@peted5217 In my area there is no shortage of scam shops either!

I find that engine covers retain heat under them and degrade hoses and electrical wire insulation. Best to remove them and throw them into the plastic recycling bin
Always Ray with my coffee time!!! Powering down Bew! Love watching you!
Nice video ray. As a kia tech the vehicle will almost guaranteed need a Vcm and the p1326 will need to be sent to the dealer due to having the knock sensor code. The dealer will perform a bearing clearance test and conclude either it will need an ecu update, knock sensor or new engine.
dang
@@hypocrisyrulessociety The new engine would be covered free of charge under warranty, as well as a rental vehicle.
Absolutely right, they will warranty you’re engine as long as there is no sludges in the engine
@@lowellevanslomboy7526 it's 100% up to hyundai if they deem it to be replaced. I've replaced an engine with even sludge in the engine before under warranty.
My landlord broke some window glass on a door that I had fixed. Thought of you ....I love my job so much I do it twice.....LOL.
Hey Ray, don't these pieces of crap have a 10 YEAR OR 100,000 MILE FACTORY WARRANTY??? You and ERIC O. are the best mechanics out there. THANK YOU for everything you have taught us.
"...do some research", I always start with you, Ray.
I had to replace one of these manifolds at my shop about 2 months ago!! The intake was all gummed up with carbon! They had never had the intake system cleaned (it had 160,xxx miles on it). Replaced the intake and cleaned the intake system and car ran great afterwards!! But before it had zero power! Keep it up Ray! I don't know how you popped into my recommended about a year ago but I'm glad you did! I love watching you, Ford boss me, and Ford tech makuloco!!
These are DI which means major carbon.
It’s sad cuz that car only has 62k and it’s already gummed up with carbon
I'll keep this in mind for my dad's 2014 Kia Soul 1.6 auto.
It's gonna reach 100k within the next few weeks, and so far has been perfectly fine. Though, I'm taking basic care of it. So hopefully it'll be one of the few that last xD
great video Ray loved how you were explaining your though process during your diagnostic procedure and how you explain how the system is suppose to work. I love watching your channel to help me gain a better understand of systems and how to diagnose them. One day, I hope to have the knowledge you have and the efficiency you have in your diagnostics.
Have a great day Ray
Love your vids keep up the good work
I was on the edge of my seat, waiting for the fuel containment cap installation! 😃
Make sure you torque the fuel tank containment cap to at least 300 foot-pounds!
That takes that 1.25 inch spline drive impact.
AS ALWAYS....enjoy WATCHING YOU work~!
If this were a movie, Ray would find the gas cap stuck in one of the intake runners.
That's one way to show it really sucks
I love when the phone rings and you start to follow it! Nice video Ray as always!
Love waking up to these videos
What nobody else seemed to comment is the fact that the car is in limp mode and has the P1326 code and most likely will need a new engine from Hyundai due to bearing failure. There have literally been millions of cars recalled along with a class action lawsuit.
Thanks again Ray! Just retired after 38 years as an instructor, and have seen much and you are truly a great technician!
Good video as always Ray
Thanks rainman for the clean presentation ✅
Ray's story reminds me, when driving, to be predictable, not "nice."
Absolutely, I have those standoffs at 4 way stops when 2 or more people are trying to be the nice one by letting the other by first but it ends up taking longer.
The most dangerous "nice" thing I see a driver do, is stop, in a multi lane roadway, for a pedestrian, which only sets the pedestrian up to be plowed by a driver coming on the side of the stopped "nice" vehicle, neither person able to see each other
yes, you can't drive for the other vehicle; you do not have his view or senses or skill
@@jasonw8124 where I am you legally have to stop at cross walks if pedestrians are there waiting. I do, if I get rear ended then oh well, I won't be at fault.
@@Mr.SisterFisster in WA State you also are supposed to stop anywhere someone tries to walk. It's a crappy law because there's no certainty that every lane can see the pedestrian... remember I'm talking about 2 or more lanes same direction. Also, it's dark and rainy here, and these peds are wearing dark clothes just walking into the roadway. Lastly, society provides actual crosswalks and expensive traffic signals. If people can just walk anywhere, why waste money on the infrastructure?
Ray, you are singlehandedly making me reconsider going back to school to finish my automotive technology degree. I dropped out 3/4 of the way through a 2 year A.A. Degree in Automotive. worst decision of my life. I miss working In the industry.
I really enjoyed this video. I really need to watch your other videos today after church. I am actually going to be updating my Honda Civic and a 92 Dodge Dakota when my husband and I open up our shop.
At least there wasn't a rag for a gas cap😆😆🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Hopefully we get a part 2. So dangerous to drive!
Welcoming back! And remembering to to remind you to have yourself a great day!
"I love the smell of electrical cleaner in the morning" 🤣🤣
If the customer wanted to press the issue, Anytime the CEL light pops on they can state it's "Emission" related and covered by federal warranty. Plenty of dealerships will try to deny things, but that warranty can be applied to a lot of CEL's
The Design and Defect warranty covers repair of emission control or emission related parts which fail to function or function improperly because of a defect in materials or workmanship during the vehicle's first 2 years/24,000 miles (8 years/80,000 miles for specified major components). The manufacturer can deny this warranty coverage if evidence shows that the emission component failure was caused by improper use or maintenance and not caused by a defect.
Oh, the hook! I like a good serial.
Props to the tech who looked at this first and realized they were in over their head
I never trust other drivers. Once traffic was backed up for a mile and one waved me on and when I pulled out a truck in the turn lane was doing about 50mph took the front of my Nissan off. And I was charged for violating the right-of-way.
Great video as always!
YOU ARE FANTASTIC! Put on new gas cap!!!
I love the takeovers. Rainman to the rescue.

The classic P200A00 is the most common code i used to get up here in canada. I work for kia now, and the problem exists on nearly all our models with variable runner length intake manifolds.
What was the actuator he turned on with scan tool? I'm trying to figure out what else would be down there under the intake?
Is it the actuator or is the runner hanging up? I have the same problem with my 2017 Hyundai Sonata. But I don’t have a loss of power.
For vernon and conan, ill rewatch yhe video, but it usually is the flaps in the runners hanging up because of carbon/shmutz and the vcm beign a stick bugger. We opt to replace the manifold completely as freeing up the rod that moves the flaps can get seized
@@MyTheBlackJack yup. It’s worse with the gdi system. I get so many gdi Kia’s with that code

It amazes me that you can film and drive at the same time. In Australia if you have a camera or phone in your hand, you will loose points and cop a good fine to go with it.
Always most informative . . . Thant you Rainman. . .👍
I'd check with Hyundai, there is a current recall, maybe not a recall, but Hyundai is replacing engines for free because of the known issues with those engines.
We got essentially a new engine on our 2014 with the same engine
They (Hyundai and Kia) refuse to call it a recall.... a letter was sent out for a "product update" and, if you didn't respond to the letter by getting the car checked, they attempt to deny responsibility.
H/K should change their sales motto... "looks good from far but it's far from good!"
PSSST That's NOT a KIA! 🤣🤣🤣🤣. And I agree with others and was thinking the same thing. WTF was up with that steering wheel. Think you should go get multiple shots now to fight off what ever that thing may have gave you..lol. Also like that hood light. How much it cost? Love watching your video's. My last new car was a 1984 Buick Skyhawk.
I kept it 12 years. The first 3 years was expensive because of payment and repair. After that the car became reliable. I had replaced the OEM parts with remanufactures parts.
After 12 years, I junked the car, and replaced it with a 100,000 mile car. In those days 100k cars were cheap.
I always maintained the cars will. I also had the best tires, and being in Pennsylvania my car was inspected every year.
( Interesting note: In Ohio cars a not inspected, but their Car Insurance is lower than Pennsylvania. )

For people asking why it wasn’t taken it to the Dealership I would guess one of two things; they’re the second owner and so it’s out of warranty, or they’ve never serviced it, which would make sense judging by the state of the interior alone. Who knows.
That dirty steering wheel and the fact that they were driving around without a gas cap, says much.

Glad you didn't pull out in traffic Ray. I hate when people do that. I get it! You're trying to be nice. But your courteous gesture will kill someone. So anyone reading this: if you do that, stopping the turn or slow lane just to let someone out, STOP! Eventually you'll get someone killed as they pull out and BOOM! T-BONED! That's why Ray didn't go! Stop holding up traffic trying to let people out. It's not the rules of the road and it's not safe! Learn!
