Ted Lasso (Season 3 Episode 2) - Why Roy hates Trent Crimm so much

- During half time in locker room, Ted tells the team to be more aggressive offensively. Jamie has an idea but shuts up as soon as Trent walks in. Ted takes Roy aside and asks hime to call this thing with Trent off. Roy agrees and speaks to Trent in private. He shows him a clipping from an article that criticised Roy’s debut in the premier league. It was unnecessarily harsh and destroyed a 17-year-old Roy. Trent admits he wrote that because he thought he was being edgy and making a name for himself but he shouldn’t have. They patch things upnand Roy lifts the ban.

I always loved how Ted could put his foot down and prove that being nice isn't a weakness. It immediately lets a self-aware guy like Roy Kent take him seriously because when the nice guy goes off on you, you need to check yourself.
This is an excellent understanding of these characters. I loved this scene so much.
You know that Roy went home that night and looked up Hallmark Christmas movies to watch and balled his eyes out.
Do you think that he would have streamed one of those movies with Phoebe? That's a genuine question on my part, not sarcasm.
@@nooneinparticular1491 nah he would've watched it by himself first so that she wouldn't catch him crying
Bawled. For future reference.
@@jesusnthedaisychainballed cause he's a... Baller
@@nooneinparticular1491 I could definitely see Roy looking up Hallmark movies and enjoying watching them with Phoebe and her mom but not wanting the guys to know about it. 😊
One of my favourite things about this scene is Trent's face as soon as Roy starts reading the article. He's embarrassed by it and the time it came from in his career and there's an appearance of almost acceptance that it's being called out.
well said
Ted has such intense Dad Energy that his 'I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed' thing even works on Roy... who is not _that_ much younger than him. It's like he forgets in the moment 😂
Dad energy indeed 😂
Ted saw potential in Roy - as a leader and as coach - that Roy didn't see in Roy; it's a powerful fuel.
It's coach energy.
"I was 17 years old. This f***ing _wrecked_ me."
I don't know what's more shocking, how long Roy has held on to that article, or the things Trent wrote about a 17 year old kid in his first professional game.
Idk if you’re into soccer or football or not but now a days there are many so called journalists writing pieces like that on young footballers. It’s sad really
but its also unrealistic that having held onto that pain for, what, 25 years or so, the briefest apology and, its all okay. That sort of stuff takes some time to recover from.
@@peterdaly6173 I think that you are right in some ways but I also think that's not the point in this scene. Roy maybe was wrecked and insicure for years after the article, but in time he became a famous and respected player (we start to know him only while he's declining), he probably recovered on his own and keep the article as memento to not give a shit about what the others think about you. He despises Trent but he doeasn't really give a shit about him as a reporter... but that's different than having him going around during the private moments of the team to write a book and he's thinking that probably Trent is about to do the same to the other players, finding the worst in them for a hit piece and he's protecting them by cutting off Trent completely. I think that reason why he forgives him is not because Trent apologize, but because he admit the fault and what he did in past so Roy knows he won't do it again.
Or that's what I like to think XD
@@peterdaly6173The show didn’t say that everything was instantly okay, but Roy had to at least make it so they could co-exist and not ruin the team dynamic for Ted.
@@peterdaly6173 There are actors who are mega successful but can name a casting agent by name and face that told them they weren't that good in first few years of their career. Sometimes it's good to be encouraged by your naysayers to keep getting better but you'll usually remember the single negative review as opposed to the thousands of high praise.
0:55 You can so clearly tell that Roy is caught wildly off guard and maybe even a little uncomfortable about Ted suddenly dropping the smile and jovial attitude and talking to him bluntly, just through incredibly subtle facial changes and body language. And it’s such a refreshing sign of his respect for Ted that he doesn’t double down or defend himself, instead accepting the instruction because he ultimately knows Ted is right.
Great acting from Brett Goldstein AND great character writing. God I love this show.
"It's actually quite funny when he yells at others, innit?"
What he said about Hallmark movies is incredibly accurate 😂
They're terrible, but great.
@@VivaLaDnDLogs but terrible...
Great with the sound off.
Do you think that he would have streamed one of those movies with Phoebe? That's a genuine question on my part, not sarcasm.
@@VivaLaDnDLogsthey’re a dime a dozen but they have a certain charm to them. They always look so cozy…
I love how Trent sheepishly walks forward looking at Ted and Ted just gives him the, "You'll be fine don't worry about it" look
1:43 "CRIMM!" thats my favorite moment in the season
And the fact that Jamie didn’t even flinch bc he’s just used to being screamed at by Roy 😂
Even more than Jamie teaching Roy to ride a bike? 😂
I love that all roy needed was a sincere apology… Trent owned it and that was enough. The ultimate
Demonstration of Roy being no bullshit, but fair
We've gotten so used to seeing Roy with a constant scowl that when we think we know what he's like when he's angry. Then Trent comes along and we realize just how much angrier Roy can be.
I love how Ted shows us what real leaders do in this situation. He didn't berate or correct Roy in public, he took him aside--without making a big deal of needing to take him aside--and then, quietly, told him exactly what he needed to do. No jokes, no folksy wisdom--just: "There's a problem you need to fix and if you don't fix it there will be consequences."
What a great show.
I liked how Ted was suddenly serious with Roy, like no humor, dead straight, with a “i’m the boss so make it right” attitude….took me off guard and was great to see more depth to Teds many layered character. And I think it took Roy off guard as well. Instead of telling Ted off he quickly agrees.
My face almost scored. Danny always positive.
Mexican superstar Chicharito actually scored with his face when he played for Manchester United. Dani's character must be based on him 😂
Immediately threw Roy off his game because Ted literally never talks that way to anyone. Especially Roy
the best bit of S3, is they made Trent appear more! From the start I loved the character, the actor did awesome and having him doing his book (so around each episode) was just great.
I would love to read taht book of his
His hair is great
Trent's involuntary jump is still funny
Jason’s acting is SOOO good in this scene
Jamie will retire and go right into coaching for Richmond. God help the first prima donna player that crosses him.
I enjoy the fact this was decades to simmering discontent resolved in as many seconds
In my house we used to call the Lifetime Network “ The Women in Peril Channel”.
Same exact plots that Ted mentioned except with the occasional psycho ex girlfriend and town dividing secret thrown in.
Best of all is they didn’t have to wait until Xmas!
edhall2able - I'm going to attach a link to another CZcams video; it's a Saturday Night Live sketch about Lifetime Network's game show, "What's Wrong with Tanya?" The sketch is very humorous, in a sort-of-dark way:

Roy went home and watched a ton of Hallmark Christmas movies and loved them

I do love when he puts his foot down
oooo my god i finaly understand halllmark movies fuuuuuuuuckckkckckck thats why my mom loves it.
funny that ted referenced hallmark christmas movies here. Cuz ted lasso as a show is the kind of good wholesome content hallmark movies wish they were
I love TED
Still didnt get to hear what jamie had to say😂😂
And now look at us.
Beat.
Go.
Yup.
WHAT WAS JAMIE SAYING??
It’s actually quite funny when he yells at other people, innit? (Innit is an abbreviation of isn’t it)
@@joeldoherty2166 I think they are meaning when Jamie got interrupted but if I am wrong about that.
I would love to know what Jamie was trying to say.
PS Hello fellow Timeless!
1:43
Do you think Roy has more of those in his wallet? Just waiting for the moment he sees these people?
