    I served aboard submarines in the USN as a Steward in the early 70’s. I loved cooking for 12 officers instead of everyone onboard, however, doing all the non cooking assignments were demeaning at their best.

  • @thatfeeble-mindedboy
    @thatfeeble-mindedboy Před rokem +5

    Does a cs aboard a submarine go through different training than any other Navy cs? Is it a career track you have to apply for, qualify for, be “selected“ for? Do civilian restaurants tend to fast track ex-Navy cs’ because they can safely presume certain things, like kitchen fundamentals, food safety, generalized discipline, respect for authority, conscientious and ethical use of their own authority… things like that? I would think such types would be highly sought after, and one of the best things to have on your resume… has this been your observation regarding post- discharge prospects in the civilian world? I know in some circles, applying for a job doing the exact same thing you did in the military is almost a ‘hire ‘em on the spot’ proposition, and for pretty much the same reason, and in very technical fields, assumptions can be made about the level of training they received, and they already knew they might constantly work under the scrutiny of some quality-control individual and aren’t threatened by it or resent it.

      @jayjyuri8796 Před rokem +1

      So look, you go through CS A school like every culinary specialist does, but then you go into submarine school, and that’s when you get put onto your submarine as a cook.

      @jayjyuri8796 Před rokem +1

      And yeah most chefs are some hot headed hardcore guys, being a cook in the navy probably won’t get you much creativity but it will give you experience in a high stress environment doing well, cooking, and that’s good for your resume

    As a former wardroom member on a ship I got a kick out of your characterization of officers as being lazy.. Picky? Yes. Officers pay for their food unlike enlisted. The mess bill each months gives them a little different feeling about their meals. The secret is to build relationships...both ways.

    Not saying that everywhere is like this but when I was in the Navy on deployment on the GW the CSs were lazy and the TAD FSAs were treated like garbage that worked 18 hrs/days while the CSs slept all day especially in S-2 general mess/cargo. Cleaning Wardrooms was the best though the officers uses to leave tips

  • @salbill4484
    @salbill4484 Před rokem

    I cranked in the wardroom - I hated it, every officer decided they needed to talk to you... I can think of few things as annoying.
    They kicked me out after 2 days and put me in the Chiefs mess. The Chiefs mess was the best, they knew how to leave you alone and let you work!
    They even let me cook and I was an engineer - I almost changed rate.

    Well I have to say, ALL or, mostly All jobs in the military involve long hours. 14 Hours is nothing to the Airborne Infantry that I was part of. 24/7 while I was in "the field" training with guard/security duty, movement to contact etc. You all have clean sheets and hot showers everyday, plus fresh food daily. Yeah you are basically a servant, so are many other jobs in the military. You are being trained to go become a chef if you want in civilian life. Anyway, thanks for the details. For the 6 years I was in I wondered why I didn't enlist for cook. I should have. Oh wwell.

    Hi, how you doing! Two questions I seen in the comments you stated if you can go back in time you wouldn’t go CS route can you elaborate on what exactly made you feel that way? N where was the school? Was it located in Texas ?

    • @theofficialdaveharris8794
      @theofficialdaveharris8794  Před 4 lety +4

      The school is in fort lee Virginia. I’m just not of fan of the type of cooking we do. We are cooking for a large mass so a lot of the food is precooked and we really can’t put our own twist on meals because we have to follow a recipe card. Plus the hours are very long and it’s the same thing everyday. There is a lot of positives to being a cook but I’m not personally happy being a CS we get shitted on a lot.

You stand a lot of watch underway. When you make rank to E4 you will have a lot of peole working under you so it gets a lot easier no more labor work for the most part just supervising. A lot of seamen say they hate BM but once they become a petty officer they tend to like being a BM.

      It all depends. First you have to complete 2 years as a CS then hopefully the year you joined the navy as a CS if that year group is overmanned you would be able to. You would just have to talk to your career Counselor. If the rate is undermanned then sorry buddy you will be stuck as a CS like i was.
