86 Through the Eyes of a Combat Vet...
I was a ground pounder. A cavalry scout (19D). From that perspective 86 is special. Shin's development, is real. So is Shuga's. Every stick has a mother or some guy that's always coming up with some philosophical shit. Thats Raiden. Shin's mannerisms are spot on for someone who's been there. Especially the way he just kind of stares at people who do stupid shit.
Also, the moment Raiden has in the truck, where the parade mechs are walking by, and his hands start moving instinctively. Yep. Real. The part where they have to be on the field, and not living in safety and peace? That's the feeling nearly every vet has when he still has brothers in the field. Part guilt, part separation anxiety, part being it's what you know and are strangely comfortable with. It's almost like the cereal isle scene in hurt locker.
So much of this anime strikes right home. The difference in the boots in the field vs the people in the walls. Comments like "The people will it" when the people have no fucking idea what it's like in the field, or what their "wants" translate to in reality for the guy behind the trigger. Staff officers being disconnected.
Day to day life in the FOB. All of it. The innuendos. The symbolism of someone who's supposed to be fodder, and frankly stupid / uneducated reading "all quiet on the western front" and the meaning of that. Each individual personality of the unit. Unit pride. The whole concept of being, essentially walking corpses and Raidens "climb the gallows" moment.
The best scenes for me are the ones around daily life at the FOB. That and the>! recon mission..!< Its uncanny just how right they got a lot of this...

I will say that I actually enjoy the segments about anime stuff and the non-anime stuff. I think the challenge though is that a lot of times when anime is brought up, it's very casually or for a split second. I actually thought Connor's idea of everyone watching an anime and then doing something like a book report is a good idea, though I think I would rather hear about everyone watching the same one and then talking about what they liked and dis-liked, like an actual book club. Because it sounds like everyone on the show is in a different place right now surrounding anime, it may actually make for some interesting conversations. Similar to how Conner didn't like 86, but it sounded like Garnt did.

A book club idea would be nice but this group is too small and unrepresentative. They would also need to write notes down before going in. Because a lot of the time, I noticed they just subconsciously agree and concede. Connor initially didn't like the mystery but Garnt did, and Connor later agreed it was a interesting part of the show. While Garnt downplayed the show far more than what was initially suggested by him. If you read the comment section, there's a whole lot of people including myself that can analyze and break down 86 to prove that it is far more nuanced than what Connor and even Garnt suggests.

You got a bit of modernity in that comment of yours, it's out of place. The story is modelled after WW2 era and post, including gulag times.
There is no system to change, changing the system is a modern, mostly democratic fantasy that people try to make into reality.
The author did the right thing, and expressed the 86's disgust towards her. They're criticising her, but not for anything so lofty as not "Doing something about it". As they should, they feel disgust, outrage, that she's too little too late, inappropriate, there is nothing constructive until they actually discover she is committed to making a mess and putting her life on the line. But Lena is never under the insane idea that she can change the system, no one ever thought of that.

"Racism bad" is nowhere near the message of 86 if you look even slightly past the surface level, it's just the background that facilitates the actual story. Which is an extremely good examination of the psychological phenomena that would occur in people placed in such situations. You don't have to take my word for it, there's a professional psychologist on CZcams and Twitch that analyses the shit out of this show and he sometimes takes four hours to watch and dissect a single episode, there's just so much to unpack.

Sounds like Connor really did miss the nuance of 86. The message isn't "racism bad", it's about showing the systematic destruction of a fascist state in the face of a problem that exists beyond their racist framework. It even goes further to show how sympathetic liberals aren't enough to save a fascist state from fascism, since our heroine fails in her escapades until she goes from being more than just sympathetic and becomes a true ally.
And then season 2 turns it into a completely fleshed out political analogy, showing how the costs of war can still be unfairly distributed in a democratic nation, and then later a discussion on why one should fight--not just in war, but in general.
Legitimately one of my few 10/10s

Connor is expecting the show to tackle the wrong themes and dismissed it when it didn't meet his expectations. He thought it is about racism. It's not. If anything it shows how simply being liberal can't stand up against authoritarian institutions. It's about child soldiers, PTSD, survivor's guilt, reintegrating into society, moving on, interpersonal connections, and finding life goals. Garnt also did not seem to understand the themes either and failed to really sell the show as a result.

Regina kinda dragged the show down tho. It’s the typical fish out of water scenario, with this innocent girl being exposed to the real horrors of war, kinda. The interesting part was always the 86ers fighting the legion and the legion themselves. It was a bit of slow burn but it does eventually pick up for those really strong final 3-4 episodes. But since the action isnt up front and isn’t too flashy (it’s a bunch of kids piloting old ass mini-mechs), I can see how some monke brained people like Connor got turned off in the beginning. Ffs, this is the first time I've seen calling out virtue signaling, Lena herself is an allegory for "holier-than-thou" self-proclaimed minorities supporters, it was only after Theo called her out that she started to grow as an actual character and stopped being a caricature. Amazing portrayals of PTSD, that's been actually praised by war veterans for it's accuracy. Finding purpose when all's been lost. 86 SPOILERS I felt the same as Connor about the 86 mc being a white saviour type at the beginning of the show, but did he miss the part where they actually called her out very harshly for it?? The whole point is that she cannot pretend to be on the oppressed people's side while actively siding with the oppressor, and she has very complicated feelings about it after she realizes what a hypocrite she is. I agree the "racism bad" side of the story is dumbly oversimplified, but I feel like that's not what the story is about anyway. The story does a better job highlighting the thoughts and experiences of various individuals on both (and later a third) sides, and how they deal with the dilemmas brought on by their circumstances. The feeling I got from watching the mc was that she was frustrated by how little she could do, how nothing she did would really make a difference in the lives of her subordinates or the war as a whole. I'm not quite up to speed with the 2nd part of the season, but this experience is clearly changing her as a person. And there are many other characters that go through their own struggles unique to them. Personally, 86 has become one of my favorite animes, so sorry about getting a little intense!

That take about 86 was soo bad. The racism isn't that big of a part of the show later on. It's clear everyone else in the military know that the 86 squad is just like them or whatever. That was the reason they showed those scenes to establish that they just don't care enough for them and see them as expendable, not worth risking the lives of their own soldiers.
86 was such a masterpiece from the somber yet somehow uplifting setting, the character development of the MC because of her interactions with the 86 squad, all the relationship drama with her friend and also among the 86 themselves and of course the amazing EDs by Hiroyuki Sawano, Laco and miyuki. 'Hands Up to the Sky' is definitely a contender for best ED. (PS: OP was great too).

While Aot shows with the Jaegerists that even if you yourself are a target of _systemic_ discrimination, it doesn't stop those people from trying to build their own systems of oppression and that it's obviously not okay to do that. IE. "Cycle of Revenge" bad, but this is a lesson that has been done in many many stories that always try to tackle the violence surrounding racism. (Also, in Aot racism doesn't really even enter the story as a topic until the tail end of S3 part 2. Before the 'Big Reveal' the story's main topic is more or less Zombie Apocalypse with Giants & Flesh Mechas.)
In 86, many of the soldiers hold a view that all of their Handlers are by default stuck-up Alban scumbags, but they also understand that there are people among them who have had varrying personal experiences with individual Albans. They also understand that even if their current Alban boss is trying to be well-intentioned but naive in thinking she's fighting with them together as their comrade, holding one person responsible for the actions of the whole system isn't fair either. Another reason for the system still being up besides the Albans' ideology of "genetic surperiority" is shown to be indifference, as Anna and Lena's uncle have chosen to act blind as defense mechanism due to their own past failures and despair/disappointment over not having done anything before.
It also shows off how first with Lena and later with the Federacy that trying to be overtly sympathetic from a position of privilege can come off as incredibly pretentious if you are only providing them help on surface level while watching from your Ivory Tower and she gets brutally called out on this by Theo. On the other hand, you can appear condescending if you try to coddle them and not let them pick or fight their own battles in life, both figurative and literal. Essentially, people want to be treated as people, not as children and I don't feel like this "White Man's Burden" attitude gets called out or discussed often enough in these types of stories from the beginning.

Altho I can understand some of the criticisms as a novel reader I can say that racism isn’t the main theme of the story and honestly by volume 2 rarely appears again.
Sure there are one or two scenes that bring the topic back later on in the story but in my opinion they work as tools to bring up a different message of its own which actually connects to the actually main theme of the story which is:
how can you find meaning in life after you’ve lost everything and all thats left is your pride in being able fight?

It's hard to see them as kids, when they don't act like it.

When season 1 uses only volume 1 as it's overall plot, the theme just got stretched so it does feel a bit "too much" and nothing new is added to the topic. The first season is all about character relationships which I found lacking in the light novel after all.

you cant judge 86 solely on a surface level, like the story 86 is telling is way beyond simply "racism bad dont do it lmao". The series goes much deeper, and as someone whos reading the light novel, theres even more to know than the actual 86 fans know already. like theres a reason their twitter is being bombarded by people begging for another season, cause both 86 parts just about reached its half part aka theres roughly 2 more seasons you could milk from it and simply the fact that because san magnolia has been destroyed which forced lena to join giad is only touching the surface towards ending the threat of the legion because that was genuinely the first time she has actually met the 86 squad for the first time and basically proved the republic wrong.

Watching 86 as a russian after the war has started boosted the show for me by miles, because of how similar san-magnolian propaganda was to real russian propaganda and by extension San-Magnolia was to Russia. Some sort of far away war, that would be won soon, with no losses due to supperior technology. The fascism. The actual war just over the border with no end in sight, that is fought by 2nd class citizens(Chechens and Buryats IRL) on obsolete equipment, without any fire support, intel or a reliable chain of command that cares for the soldiers on the ground is something that was protraied very well. The shame of being Russian, despite knowing that you want peace in the world was communicated spectaculary. Best of all the author completely nailed the feeling of inadequacy. The feeling, that in no way can I change the system far greater than myself, that i cant stop the carnage.
A few weeks after finisihing the show i found a video with an intercepted call of a russian solider to his mother. They were being sent on a suicide mission to cover up the crimes of the russian regime, because they knew too much. He was so hauntingly calm, a guy my age so easily accepting his death, just like the spearhead squadron. "Why arent you coming back?" "Because there are 30 of us and 1000 of them." I cried then.
I wish this ends soon with a ukranian victory. I have moved to Georgia to not get conscripted. This is genocide of ukrainians and russians and Putin will be punished. Slava Ukraini, Jive Belarus, Freedom to Russia. Fucking glory to the spearhead squadron.

It's hard to see them as kids, when they don't act like it.

Idk man, anyone who lives in the US knows what spoonfed anti-racism messages. With that in mind, 86 did it far better in almost every way. It addresses the alba as monsters, displaying hypocrisy of someone saying “I’m nice to those people” while having no skin in the game, and it also show the eighty six as monsters too. Look at anju, Kaie and shin who got shit on by other eighty six because they had different bloodlines. It’s not like hollywood where it just shows ONE race as bad but it provides nuance and a non linear aspect of racism(and incrimination)where Hollywood movie studios are just unable to do so.
Beyond the overarching theme, shin’s whole character arc is pretty excellent, the animation and OST are phenomal. My only critique is they had multiple recap eps in season 2 due to episode delays and I wish one of those would’ve spent time showing Lena POST big legion attack.

To me, the slow pace is what made it even better. I like how they took their time and adapted just 1 volume for cour 1. The slow pace is what made the dialogue heavy scenes hit hard as well. It was like a slow burn which made it more impactful. A lot better than studios rushing through the LN content and skipping important dialogues. Now if you feel like the pacing was a drag, I think you just don't have any patience. Like bruh let the story develop first.

Connor somehow missing that every character from Lena’s, best friend, to her “uncle”, to her colleagues, to the 86 themselves called her out on her “angelic” sympathy complex. Maybe in a year or so, The Anime Man will find an anime he likes and want to talk about it, but at that point, Gnart is now exclusively watches, IDK, Bushcraft Survival videos.

As many people have already pointed out, 86 isn't about racism entirely. It's oppression. The people who are watching part 2 right now will understand.
But in case you don't, let's take the female MC and her close relative and friend. They aren't racist, but by will or not they are accomplice to allowing what has already transpired to happen. Its concept is similar to the bois being frustrated with japanese paperwork, but they don't bother to change anything and just accept it for what it is (because what can you do?)
For anyone who thinks this is bad writing, you need to get your eyes check. Most of the references are based off WW2 france and a slight bit of germany, and it's likely that you haven't observed how the MC changed her outlook from being naive to being resolute.

86 is literally one of the best anime I've watched, like ever😂😂 i binged it in 2 days!! It had a very satisfying ending
The whole racism thing was obvious like he said, but as the story grows it takes on another meaning. I actually never thought of racism as the story continued. These people are the 'low class, not special' people of the population...the 'disposable ones' and 'replaceable ones'. The themes of war and its effects, the trauma faced by the ones on the frontlines, especially with the label 'DISPOSABLE'...the trauma of being left behind(Shin). And also on the lady MC's side(Lena), the struggles of being an idealist, envisioning the ideal society and holding to that vision in a world that is anything but...being told everyday that it's hopeless to dream or try to be different, coming to terms with the fact that the ideal society is something that may never happen and having to decide between sitting and being disillusioned with the rest(Anette) or trying to 'DO WHAT YOU CAN' to make the world better for you and the people around you...these were the meat of the whole thing. And when they meet at the end it is GOLDEN, cause there's this tension throughout the story where the characters repeat over and over that it's a war, they're afraid to hope too much, they go out expecting to die...so we can't help but hope for them✨️
...and I still want to know who 'No face' is🤔😂😌

"racism bad is such a spoonfeed take in 86" Then why do you like Attack on Titan season 4 so much? The racism in that show is just as spoon-fed and unnuanced too.
Also I do think Connor quit the show at a bad point. Because the look into racism does get a bit more nuanced as time goes on. The FMC gets called out for her sympathy without real action like an episode later, and season 2 focuses on an entire new nation and the protagonists' difficulties adjusting to an entirely new lifestyle.
