Garnt is right. With a lot of people it is something just so happens to make them happy in their darkest times and they start to use it as a crutch to be happy and eventually associate it with their happiness itself. It happened to me in what was my darkest year up to that point, for reference I found out my fiance cheated on me and kicked me out then my mom died only months later. I became literally obsessed with a few things and it genuinely started to rule my life. Those things being Vocaloid, VRChat and drinking. One vocaloid stood out to me. The Chinese vocaloid Zhiyu Moke released only months after my mom passed and I became obsessed him to a concerning degree. I still enjoye thoss things massively still, but it doesnt dictate my happiness anymore. Using things that make you happy as a bit of a crutch for a while is okay, but when it gets to the point of controlling your life it becomes an issue.

Yo, this is very informative and helpful. Honestly, I can understand why some people develop obsessions or addictions. Like you guys said, someone could've had a childhood where it was all work and no play and now they collect plush toys or something like that as an adult. It can be very different for a lot of people. But, I definitely understand the points. My dad had a terrible childhood. He retired at an early age and now he can do all the fun things he missed out on when he was a kid. Playing video games, collecting figures, etc. I'm so happy that he's happier now
Memeing aside, I sort of get what Connor is getting at. Like you can have a lot of things in your room of a specific thing and although (for good reason) it makes you seem obsessed with it, you can simply go on and off it when you want. I have anime figures, posters of my favourite anime but on a daily basis my mind wanders between different things that's not anime.
as someone who you could argue is proper obsessed with bts it just makes me happy. i was going through a horrible time back in 2018 and someone told me about them. i knew who they were because my sister liked them a few years back so i decided to give them a chance. this might sound a bit cliche or weird but when i listen to them, watch their shows, tune into their livestreams, etc, i feel better. the boys portraying a positive message while encouraging us fans to not give up, no matter how hard life gets, it made my days worth it. i would say i was definitely depressed for about 2 years and i haven't been feeling depressed for that long since i became a fan. i don't have money to spend on them but if i did, i definitely would. i don't wake up for them anymore, i wake up for myself. i would say im similar to connor with this. i talk about them lots, i own merch, i make fan art and fan content, but i also have other interests and a life outside of them. sorry if this doesn't make sense lol
I'm happy you're better now! They also helped me a lot and love and support them but i think is always good for your life to not depend on someone or something so sometimes i feel sad when i see ppl saying that certain thing/people/group are their life, i think there should always be a balance

Obsession in psychology is defined as an intrusive unshakeable thought that lingers around and the person are unable to control it, so by this definition yes when you’re watching jojo, and you are really into the show sure, it’s normal. However, like most people we watch other anime as well, and we crave for new shows right. But if only Jojo sticks in your mind and affect your daily lives for a period of time then it may eventually becomes unhealthy. And buying or collecting stuff it’s just a compulsive behaviour of that thought so in shows like what Connor says, basically it’s a form of OCD.
Man, after avoiding jojo like the plague thanks to the annoying af fans that repeat the same 5 jokes over and over, Connor is the only one that made me give it a chance, and yeah it was fun, he's is definetly not obsessed and the best jojo fan out there, lol.
That's nice to hear. I kinda doubt people that says the JoJo fandom is cancer since the worst they do is being annoying with the jokes and some of them not being able to come up with clever ones, so it ends up being the same for a lot of that.
8:35 - The process of addiction is quite hard to explain, even more so when i don't specialise in it, but the best way to sum it up is - its all about dopamine and serotonin. People get addicted based on their body wanting more and more, by process making the 'individual' crave more of the thing(s) that give it that extra bit of dopamine//serotonin. You can see it with everyday mundane things such as: coffee, fatty foods, meat, SUGAR - there was a study on sugar if i remember correctly, that looked at how people would pick sugary things rather than more nutritious things, based only on the feeling of satisfaction they will get after eating that piece of candy. There's other factors, but this is the base of it. -Psychology Student
one of the most beautiful things you will ever achieve in life is learning to not care what anyone thinks of you and do whatever you like you know without hurting anyone or breaking any laws of course but that still gives you plenty of breathing room if you ask me
I would suggest maybe talking to people that play yugioh or magic the gathering on how they get addicted,I loved the feeling of opening new packs and that hooked me
1:57 - What first comes to mind is the Attachment Types study. Especially the Type B attachment which is very prone to be possessive or obsessive. Of course the study's limitations is that it doesn't explain EVERYTHING and that for what Connor's referring to is more behaviour than personality, which doesnt fit with the study, because it's not focused on behaviour, but rather on personality. Even though it still holds in this instant. Possibly, it's due to the way people were raised and how they developed certain tendencies, for example: being more enabled to continue certain actions and form certain behaviour(s) such as the 'Barbie example', would be a main indicator for it. Everyone has preferences, likes, kinks, tastes, but the only thing that separates the obsessive tendencies from being realised is pursuing them AND when you have the money, power, ability to pursue it/them - THEN it becomes "problem" in question. -Psychology Student
I would suggest looking into studies that focus on attachment and behavioural tendencies (aka personality lol), there's research based on results from countries. I checked some Japanese (research) articles and what it seems is that most Japanese score highly on the Type A at about 62%, but let me be clear - results that show such results could be easily falsified or fake, ESPECIALLY when the country is VERY FOCUSED on the way you put yourself out to the world and just on LOOKS and IMAGE. Take the laws for example (defamation of character being a perfect example), they speak a lot about the country as a whole. Other than that Type B was ranked at 36%! SO, that speaks for itself.
I’d venture to guess that the reason Japan has so little yet such fucked up crime is likely due to a lower rate of poverty therefore less crimes committed out of financial desperation. I could be way off base and I’m not very informed but that would be my best guess based off of crime patterns in my country.
Connor should go on Dr. K stream to talk about his Jojo obsession and just in general learn about addiction. It's not really an "addiction" unless it's negativity affecting you.
I know I'm late for a comment, but, being a psychologist, I can tell you that there are many theories (scientific ones) to explain addiction. In order to simplify it, I can say that an addiction is something that takes you away the option to say "no" to a particular thing and that this thing is making your, and people around you, life worse. This particular mechanism is both physical (on chemical level) and psycho-social. Trying to explain it in more depth, but without being boring, we can say that most of it could be found (as for the theory I personally embrace) on the meaning people gives to things and the link that they create between the object of the addiction and something on their reality construction. For example, most of the smokers don't like the first cigarette, but they continue to smoke and eventually became addicted to this particular process. Smoking, as it is drinking alcohol, is both a social and a chemical experience, so, smoking starts "to be part of a group", "to be like someone I respect", "to look like I'm more mature", ... ... At the same time gives a chemical input to the brain and trigger some sensations. When a social meaning is given to something and this something have a deep relation with our reality than we havve the seeds of addiction, it turns in real addiction the moment the freedom to say "no" to the addicting objecto/sensation/emotion is taken away form us. So I can't have an hour long lession without taking a smoking pause. Which means that without a strong significance invested into the object and with the ability of saying "no" it's not strictly possible to speak about addiction. This to say that many addiction are treated changing the object of the addiction itself (heroine to methadone for example) because the chemical structure is similar, but one is medically controlled, this way people remains addicted but just to another thing while trying to work on the meanings that people gives to the object (while still using medical procedures) gives better results giving back the freedom to say no to the object itself because the way reality is constructed (for the single person being treated) is changed too within the significance given to the substance in this case. Well, sorry for the giga explanation, it's a super complex matter and would require to open many topics at once to be, even in the slightest , treated in a digestible way. 😅
It's like 0 or 100. As thy told to conform all their lives and once have their own lives do a complete 180 (their repressed feelings come out as a every person needs to express themselves one way or another.) As they want to feel something and experience life to their fullest or be hella passionate in a niche things/creativity as were always expected to do be like everyone else, just a number, not an outlier. Stand out n be who you want to be, just make sure that your aren't hurting anyone else while doing what you enjoy. Go HAM
Japan needs teleworking, as many people do perish due to overworking (karoshi.) As they many often will sleep at the office since they are given piles and piles of work and are expected to do. And if the boss says they must stay and work, they shall because gotta respect the boss, as he has seniority and could fire them in a heartbeat. Also, man salary men hardly get to see their families as either working at office at late nights or arrive home but then have to sleep as they are tired. So, if more people employ teleworking, there will be less accounts of Karoshi, less stress, and time to see their family. That way their kids can spend time with their absent mother or father or both.

I blame Connor for getting me into Jojo... now Im getting the Joestar Birthmark as a tattoo
I'm so happy that he's happier now
Joey and Garnt telling Connor is obsessed with JoJo…
Connor’s mind: Yare yare!
You a guy and listen to bts? You gotta be gay or something
Imagine being obsessed with Jojo lmao
Well if crazy huge spending = Obsession, then I'll never be obsessed with anything. I'll have you know I only own 1 piece of Trigun merch, and only some anime stuff...
For now at least
consumerism will kill, be wise
Personally I've never bought any kind of anime merch, I don't see the appeal.
Unless we are talking about Touhou fumos, which I hope to get someday, but I guess it's game merch ᗜˬᗜ
@@mxxkyboi did somebody just said FUMOS?! O-O
@@oishikoishi2447 I sadly missed a fumo drop from August 27th, I couldn't enter AmiAmi (like 90% of people cuz it was so overloaded lol), maybe I will be able to get one on next Reitaisai D:
@@mxxkyboi XD! Good luck! Hope you get them!
Connor isn't obsessed with jojo, he wants to BE a jojo
The talk about crime reminded me about the kyoani fire.
thank you connor for introducing me to jojo it is incredible
Yh and I'm tired of pretending JoJo isn't the best manga ever
Is this the longest highlight and it's about JoJo obsession
Would love to watch that idol documentary mentioned if anyone can find it. Working on a horror anthology comic, and that sounds like a really good source of inspiration.
Can someone link that idol documentary Connor was talking about.
Man, after avoiding jojo like the plague thanks to the annoying af fans that repeat the same 5 jokes over and over, Connor is the only one that made me give it a chance, and yeah it was fun, he's is definetly not obsessed and the best jojo fan out there, lol.
If only the fandom wasn't total cancer, more people would try it.
Lol funny because it's actually because of the fandom that I got into JoJo. I found the fandom funny.
wtf bro.
the fandom shouldnt be a reason why u avoid a series, is not part of the show and takes no blame from fans
I actually really like the jojo fandom
That's nice to hear. I kinda doubt people that says the JoJo fandom is cancer since the worst they do is being annoying with the jokes and some of them not being able to come up with clever ones, so it ends up being the same for a lot of that.
just this highlight being 17 minutes long is all we need to know
A socially acceptable level of obsession is called "having a hobby"
"heres my jojo toilet"
literally a hole in the ground
It's when you admit you have a problem. Then you know you haven't gone too far and it's a good thing.
1:11
Why connor just turned into a 12 year old flirty girl it's so fu**ing funny🤣
"Is Connor TOO Obsessed with JoJo?"
over 17 minutes long video...
Same boat for hoarders is it an addiction, obsession or mental break
Special interest is the word.
8:35 - The process of addiction is quite hard to explain, even more so when i don't specialise in it, but the best way to sum it up is -
its all about dopamine and serotonin.
There's other factors, but this is the base of it.

one of the most beautiful things you will ever achieve in life is learning to not care what anyone thinks of you and do whatever you like you know without hurting anyone or breaking any laws of course but that still gives you plenty of breathing room if you ask me
1:06 it's a toilet that plays Polnareff screaming every time you sit on it
Last year at work (I work it retail) I had a customer attending court while buying some stuff.
I don't know, can someone be too obsessed with air
"...Only in Japan..."
Did somebody mentioned John Daub?
15:20 if it's a work call I'll remain quiet and do some work until the meeting starts tbh
I would suggest maybe talking to people that play yugioh or magic the gathering on how they get addicted,I loved the feeling of opening new packs and that hooked me
The first step is acceptance, he'll get there one day
It's so funny when they were talking about J walking, here in Brazil we do it all the time, lol!
Without watching this “Yes.”
I’d venture to guess that the reason Japan has so little yet such fucked up crime is likely due to a lower rate of poverty therefore less crimes committed out of financial desperation. I could be way off base and I’m not very informed but that would be my best guess based off of crime patterns in my country.

Impossible
For the love of god will somebody please fix that Lapras plush that fell behind Joey
I miss these days!
Go HAM
Me too, Connor. Me too.

Short Answer: Yes
Long Answer: *YESSS*
Jojo was my middle school obsession it was one of the first manga I started buying alongside soul eater
Happened to me, regret nothing.
In regards to connors question, i think autism is a key factor for alot of these people too in the form of special interests/hyperfixations
They deffo were denying the suits looked good lmfao
You can never be too obsessed with JoJo
He is .
Yesterday I bought a huge bronze Aztec calendar uhhhn maybe I got the JOJO bite 😅 thanks Connor
