I Upgraded My Daddy's Old Surefire 6P - Malkoff M61 LED Conversion

  • I found an old Surefire 6P flashlight while we were going through my Daddy's stuff after he died. It still worked fine but the 65 lumens that was hot stuff back in the day seems pretty dim now. So I found a great USA made LED upgrade from Malkoff Devices. In this video you'll see what a difference it made.

Ahhh... Your video on Surefire lights from back in the day ( 25+ years ago) which took me a short bit to retrieve because of their antiquated, no longer relevant, under powered, and back then... had become relegated " TROT-LINE WEIGHT " status... AS THEY RESIDED in the very deepest corner, of the deepest drawer in my old POWERHOUSE SHUTDOWN ROLLAWAY CABINET!
When I watched your video... I had put them away in HOPES THAT SOMEDAY... SOMEONE, WOULD COME UP WITH AN UPGRADE for them.
    I have 2~6C's, 2~ 6Z's, 4~ 6P's, 4~3P's and 3~ 6P bodies and tail switch caps!!!
Man-O-Man... am I excited! I was a dealer for them ( self, family, friends, and co-workers in the beginning, which started in 1988!
I can't thank you enough for this UPLIFTING AND PARAMOUNT DISCOVERY!!!
ALL TOGETHER +/-... between those that I still have contact with... there is around 75 to 100 lights stuck back, just as I did, that can now be put back into service!
Thank you my friend... you have made alot of folks very happy! In all frankness... thank you so very much to have a hand in so many people's enjoyment!
    My apologies as to length.
    Respectfully, Seth

I have an original Surefire 6Z first generation with one of the first Malkoff M61 LED conversions. I remember it is about 230 lumens. it's not as bright as current flashlights but it's built to last forever. the light lasts for about 2 hours
I later found another Surefire 6P same as yours. I put the same Malkoff M61 LED conversion in it too

Mr Malkoff and Surefire are both top notch in quality and warranty, something I say having broken lights from most other popular makers at work. Their lights are for those who want gear to count on.

Aw man, it makes me smile, legitimately smile, when you get a classic heirloom like this and upgrade it for the current generation of technology :-) Hope it brings you good memories, Bryan.
4 to 500 lumens is kind of a sweet spot, isn't it? I noticed that aside from a thrower, this is about the highest amount of light I use regularly, and I don't find myself hurting for more. And with the kind of beam you described, seems like a 6P-M61 would make a good shotgun mounted light, wouldn't it?

In addition to the Malkoff working for the upgrading on the 6P, they work equally as well on the Z and C series SureFire lights and a few will work equally well on both the 6 and 9 volts lights but you've got to exercise caution with picking a Malkoff replacement light, it must be able to support both 6 and 9 volt! Granted, if the light is used in a 9 volt light such as a C3 Centurion, it will slightly shorten the life of the light as opposed to using it in a 6 volt light such as a 6P, C2 or Z2. This is due to the extra 3 volts causing the light to burn brighter than the standard 6 volts.
I've been using Malkoff for quite awhile and I love their products.

Now with the gold mine you have found i can upgrade my famous 6P as i always liked that light which i still carry in the winter months ..I don't know how i ever got by 50 years ago with an Eveready 2 D cell flashlight with a PR bub ..Thanks again i will order one for my 6P

Surefire 6P is a great host. And while the Surefire P60 incandescent actually is decent, a Malkoff M61 definitely is an upgrade. The beam character is very pleasant without artifacts and a smooth transmission between spot and spill. Not to forget the L and LL options for more runtime. I have a lot of them in different Surefire hosts and the most in 4000K option, which I personally prefer for the eye comfortability and color rendition.
