The Abbey was founded in 1148 by Dermot McMurrogh. Dermot McMurrogh brought Cistercian monks from Mellifont. It was established for the Cistercians which was called “The Valley of Salvation”. In 1228 the records show that there were 36 monks and 50 lay brothers living in the abbey. In the early 16th Century Baltinglass abbey was one the richest abbeys in Ireland until the the reformation by Henry VIII which saw the dissolution of the order.
That was amazing seeing the remains of that beautiful Abbey. This is so well kept and many headstones lovingly restored too. A very moving place, I could picture the Monks walking through that cloister. You are right Sue we live in an age sadly where vandals who have no respect for anything just destroy all they see. Thank you so much for taking us here, the drone was fantastic. 💕🇦🇺
Hey Sue, another great video! Its so true, walking among the graves and thru the abbey is like walking into history. We can only imagine how the abbey looked when it was completed, and even now its grandeur still speaks to us. A wonderful walkabout, and the drone footage was great too, thankx again! :)
The drone footage was amazing. Also, the Brits disolved all Catholic abbeys int the lands they controlled, but the Cistercians have continued in other places throughout Europe and the world
That was a beautiful cemetery and the drone footage was amazing didn't expect to go through the windows! This was great Sue thank you ❤ God Bless and take care
New here, and loving the video, you can thank Ron from, Faces of the Forgotten. He thinks highly of you, and I of him, so here I am. The tour was beautiful as well as your narration, and Ireland its self. The abbey is so hauntingly magnificent, the architecture alone is amazing, I could sit there all day, and soak up the history, and be happy. Yes, it is a shame in the vandalism, it happens here in America also, my own 4th Great Grandmothers grave was dug up in the 1960s by teens. Thank you for the video Sue.
Hi Patricia, welcome to Ireland 😁 Ron has been a huge help to me and has given me guidance and advice so I'm still learning, I appreciate you here ❤️❤️
10:33 your channel is amazing. I knew my ancestors were buried here and you found their graves. Mary Cooper is my 6 x Great Grandmother and William Cooper is her son. Thank you so much for this video. I’m smiling from ear to ear.
What an amazing Abbey. There’s a lot of it still standing too, which is quite rare ,sometimes they are nearly down to wall height. It’s set in beautiful surroundings too. Most of these places had their own large ponds for fish , their own gardens and some animals as they were self sufficient .Anything left over they would sell to help pay for more seeds, cattle etc. They lead a simple life of working the land and worship. Some places would help sick or injured people if they had someone that was experienced in herbs and potions .Some would open their doors to travellers too..Another way of getting more income. But a lot actually had wealthy benefactors who had perhaps a young sone who wanted to go into the church..That would bring in a regular income as well as that benefactor would usually build the abbey for them.It helped then to as it got them closer to God ,and a ticket to heaven. So they thought. Not always the case lol!..Thank you Sue this was a great adventure and I thoroughly enjoyed it..Love n Light 🥰
As usual your blogs are very well played out. Very factulal. Love the history and beauty. Now my question. Black slate was big in the U,S., 1700's, 1800's. Stones looked very readable, mint condition. No mold, Grade of stone? Just something to think about.
The remains of the Cistercian Abbey are utterly stunning. The order dates back to the 10th century. Trust Henry V111 to disband the Monks who led such a peaceful life and lived off the land. They had Nuns and Monks and St Benedict was their patron. I'm sure they produced some alcoholic beverages. The cemetery is beautiful. I love the mounted tombstone. The Cistercians are a Catholic order so the Abbey and land must have been taken by the English settlers. Fascinating place. Thankyou for taking us there.
Sorry to see that some vandalism happened there I thought that was uniquely an American thing to do with me and July cemetery it's sad to see it happening there too
Fabulous architecture in that Abbey. I so wish it were whole. I can't give Henry the tyrant a rest in peace nod. He was a major jerk. The crypt is now a very sad statement of the worst of humanity. Don't mean to be negative, everything you videoed was wonderful and I loved it all just get irritated at the lack of respect.
Thanks Janice, yes it's awful it was vandalised, just terrible, most of the mausoleums here and crypts are bricked up to prevent vandalism, so it's a pity ❤️
I really hope that the people who vandalised this mausoleum are being haunted by the spirits of the people who were laid to rest there and that they (the vandals have no peace of mind for what they've done

Have you found any graves or mausoleums earlier than the 1200s ? Thank you for taking us along on your adventures! Very interesting
In my latest video at St Mary's there and interesting grave slab inside the church dating 850
Dermot MacMurrough, the last king of Leinster?

Tryed so hard to stay awake I'm catching up now x
Thank you Hazel, I was tired myself but it was exciting too ❤️🇮🇪🍀
I'm sure vandals will regret what they did as they get older but it's a shame.
It's terrible Hazel 😢💔

I completely agree Martin 👍
