    Just a note with the colour temperature of bulbs: it's not a "more is better" kind of situation. Plants generally use more light from 2 areas of the spectrum. The corresponding colour temperature would be about 2700K and 6500K. I would agree that the 6500k is the better end of the spectrum to use for this project though.
    Thanks for a really informative video, it helped me a lot :)

    _Drosera burmannii_ can easily become a pest, they are annuals but do produce large amount of seeds. And they do germinate readily, completely out competing slower growing _Droseras._

  • @pershop4950

    It looks like you put a covering on one of those 5 small pieces, then you went ahead a made a hole in it anyway and put in some spaghnum to act as the wick.
    I think this design could also benefit from having that 1 small piece and 1 large piece, have an angled cut at the bottom where they stay on the glass. The other 4 pieces can continue having a flat cut since they are just there to support and not be used to get water in or out.
    However, it looks great as-is and I realized I keep coming back to this video and see new and different things to think about and comment about. I hope you are doing well and this terrarium is also going great after these many years.

    Hey there! So I built my tank up to basically match yours, but it’s a rectangular tank. My question is this - how often do I need to/should the soil/sphagnum moss/sand be changed out or replaced? I’ve had it set-up for several months now and it’s kinda smelling a little musty

    Does anyone know how exactly the irrigation works? I reckon you leave the bottom of the long pipe open to allow water to flow but do you glue the little ones waterproofly to the bottom in order for them to store water or do you leave em open at the bottom?

    • @HypnoticExotics
      @HypnoticExotics  Před 3 lety +2

      The long tube is empty, the smaller tubes are filled with sphagnum moss to wick the water up via capillary action into the soil above.
      I put little hot glue stilts on the bottom of the smaller ones as well to make a tiny gap for water to flow through underneath.
      I "think" that's what you were asking about, correct me if I'm mistaken though!

    hi, im planning to making my own terrarium for my sundew, when you say quartz pebble is it the same thing as the marble pebble? im looking into market near me and all i found is marble pebbles

    • @HypnoticExotics
      @HypnoticExotics  Před 3 lety +2

      No, marble is metamorphic limestone, still calcium carbonate and can thus can react with water, releasing nutrients into the soil.
      It can even make the water alkaline, which is not what you want with carnivores.
      Hope that helps!

    How did you get the soil to overhang over the moss without risk of collapse?

    • @HypnoticExotics
      @HypnoticExotics  Před 3 lety

      It just took a bit of TLC and attention when watering. The Cephs and Utric have now rooted in and act as a scaffold for the overhang.

  • @spiderdude2099

    Just for anyone watching, he's not kidding when he says no Miraclegro. I bought Miraclegro brand sphagnum moss, and only later realized that in an astonishingly idiotic move, that brand includes fertilizer in the sphagnum moss, making it a death sentence for any carnivorous plant. Same with their perlite.
    Conceivably you COULD make it usable if you had a way to thoroughly wash, rinse, and leach out all the fertilizers with a ton of distilled water. Maybe you could spread it out over a screen and leave it out for several days in the rain to wash and then rinse a few times with distilled water. But it's also, not hard to find specialty stores online for carnivorous plant media that is fertilizer free, so maybe just buy that.

    I have been wanting to start a carnivorous terrarium for a while now. I even ordered a bunch if different kinds and colors but they were all confiscated by customs in new York. Where can I find or order them in the USA?

    • @HypnoticExotics
      @HypnoticExotics  Před 5 lety +1

      Hi Janie! I'm sorry to hear about the confiscation, it's illegal to import plants without a permit though, especially those that are endangered.
      Here are some US sources for carnivorous plants:
      Flytrapcare.com
      Flytraps.com
      Redleafexotics.com
      Nativeexoticsonline.com
      Growcarnivorousplants.com
      Californiacarnivores.com
      There are others as well, ebay too if you set the filter to "US only"
      Hope that helps!

    How do i prevent nutrient buildup? Roots kept dying.

    • @HypnoticExotics
      @HypnoticExotics  Před 5 lety

      Is it in a terrarium? You can prevent nutrient buildup by flushing distilled or R/O water through it every month or so. It also highly depends on the quality of the water, because even though 50ppm is fine for most carnivores, it's still enough to lead to nutrient buildup if left to evaporate.
      Hope this helps!
