Before watching his stuff I made the mistaken purchase of five pretty lands for $50 thinking it was obviously going to have more cards. An example of Secret Lair being very deceptive to new players with their unnecessarily big and dressed up packaging. I know it's my bad for not understanding the text on the box but I was in disbelief, going into denial thinking there's no way anyone would sell one foil, non-full art land for each color for $50 MSRP

Prof: "How did you get started in MTG?"
I had a friend who lived in a neighborhood really close to the card shop, and all of his friends played MTG. I'd stay the night at his house on Friday nights playing until the wee hours with his (now our) friends, try and learn how to play the game, and go and play in Extended, Type 2, or Draft the following Saturday morning. He lived about a mile and a half from Main Street (where the card shop was). Being a pre-teen in 1999, we did what any self respecting child would do. We skateboarded the whole way there. I'd give every dollar I've ever earned to go back to those days.

It’s hardly replicable as it means having played a card game similar enough to know what’s up from the start.

I do intent on playing with them with in September- October when my next Semester starts, I have a friend who knows how to play but has no card, that’s gonna be fun. I got started because a friend made me a deck for my birthday. I chose my two favorite colors (red and blue!) and she smashed 100 or so cards together so I could play with my friends. I later got the Sixth Edition starter set with the goofy instructional video on CD-ROM.

My start was first a Magic Origins intro pack and then soon after a deckbuilder's toolkit of the time. I'd call the essential experience of it "preconstructed deck with a simple theme and a few fun bits and bobs" followed by "learning to evaluate cards for usefulness without a pre-existing deck to work off of." And yeah between the likes of this and commander precons (for those bold or foolish enough to be starting with commander, best way to play that it is lol) and then things like bundles I believe that essential experience is absolutely still available so long as you have the real key ingredient to my experience: friends who know what they're doing but aren't gonna grind you into the dirt and call it teaching.

Another great thing about the starter kits this vid is mainly about, is that the code card that comes with digital versions of the decks for mtg arena, is ALSO redeemable for a friend! Meaning: you AND one friend can share the code, and allows you BOTH to have BOTH the digital decks in arena to play eachother with!!! :D (or at least the in store one did, I didn't buy the Amazon one, so I cannot confirm that one does too :/)

My partner and I found these at target for $6 a couple weeks ago 😎 we split it so we each kept one of the physical decks and I think $3 for a functional deck is great, even if its mostly common cards lol. Especially since the arena code(for both decks) could be redeemed twice, so we both downloaded arena and have both decks digitally and can now play magic even when we aren’t physically in the same room, which is great since we can’t always meet as often as we’d like due to distance. I think these things are great! VERY grateful I saw this video before coming across the other version though since I never imagined they’d have the same deck lists lol

I got into the game thanks to some kids at school, learned all the wrong rules (like mana never disappearing), bought some boosters around the time of 7th, Odyssey, and Torment, and a deck from Judgement (which I still have in its box, with tape holding it together.) During that summer I started playing FNM, learned the right rules, and then I was the only one still playing it even after the school shut down any card games, fearing gambling of any kind.

The Ravnica Allegiance prerelease is what got me started! A big fancy collection of new cards (including a Blood Crypt, which was neat!), a challenge to put something together and a day playing other people all on a similar power level, it was so much fun. I'd already done started Arena though, after getting hooked on MTG CZcams (you, Game Knights and Spice 8 Rack) so I did know the basics - might be tough for a new player to start there. Still, I'd thoroughly recommend it.

My partner can learn the ropes with Arena. I did get a Pioneer deck and color based Boosters so everyone can upgrade/modify, and we can all play 3-way in paper format, but if this trickles into Arena, even better, because my gf and our mutual friend both play games tabletop and online, so gamenight just got alot more fun!

Call me crazy, but I miss the old starter decks that were around when I started playing during Revised. I liked the randomness of the cards you got, and they even came with a nice thick rulebook. My friend that taught me how to play simply bought a starter himself to pit against my first deck, and as I bought boosters or traded cards, I'd upgrade it and eventually had a deck to take to tournaments. It was a super fun and organic way to learn the game, get new cards, and grow as a player!

Got into MtG at a generic geekery convention. Wizards had a convention booth there, just a cute little thing in a crowded arena where they were doing learn to play events. Me and my mate I was with were both reasonably broke kids, and were more than happy to do the free thing. I got a terrible red deck from it, with such amazing bombs as "Lightning Elemental" and "2/1 Goblins". But Shivan Dragon was in it, something that probably sparked my ongoing love affair with Dragons in Magic, so there's that at least!

My intro to Magic was Hearthstone. It's such a shame Blizzard are a company I can no longer support but the journey away from them was what lead me to going to SOI prerelease and getting hooked on Magic. Learning the basic concepts of a CCG like card advantage, tempo, aggression and control in a game that is simple meant I had my eye keyed in for magic. I don't think I'd be as good at the game if I'd not got those fundamentals down

To tell the truth. I recently only got started in magic last year. Ive been around since the beginning, but didnt pick any packs up cause i wasnt very popular in school, and didnt have any friends who wanted to play the game. So i went my entire childhood never once playing or collecting. Flash forward to September 2020, things changed. Arin Hanson started a streaming show called Shuffle Master and he cracked draft boxes of Magic and seeing the art on the cards, i started falling in love with them. So i thought i should start collecting. Still had no clue how to play. I just loved the beautiful artwork, and who knows. I collect, they could be worth something years down the road (which made me regret not picking up Alpha packs as a kid. I could have a Lotus and now ill never know), then in his streams he kept talking about getting Magic Arena. That it had an awesome tutorial and would help you learn the basics of the game, and that it is FREE to download. So i did. My thought was, ill try it out. If im not into it. Ill still collect and be happy. I was not doing great like at all. But then it began to click. I started playing and connecting the pieces and i finally started learning. It flung out the line and the hook sunk in deep. Arena really helped me become a fan of the game whether its Paper, Online, or even on my mobile device. I love Magic the Gathering. It went from a card game not even on my radar, to becoming my favorite card game of all time.

I got started with the Return to Ravnica starter decks. I think I chose Orzhov as my first guild, then Izzet and like one or two others. Rakdos definitely. Got my butt beat by my friends with real decks for a long time. Then, I started making real decks after buying a deckbuilder's toolkit and a fat pack (bundle for all you new players) and really got into the game and had a ton of fun! Since most of the products I bought are no longer around, I really don't think that experience can be replicated. Maybe, though. All you would do is buy the Arena starter kit and a few packs, like the Prof said, and Bundles are still around, so it wouldn't be too tough to replicate.

The first time I got into it was in grade school and it was the only thing to do before school started, since the computers were taken and everyone else was off playing Pokemon. But I burned out quickly when every deck had some insane instant win condition. My more recent return came from a friend not shutting up about it and telling me about sealed and draft. Which are still my favorite formats. And yeah I think that can be replicated, if someone is leery of the investment needed to play well but wants to try then telling them "hey what if we all started on a level field" would help.

I was so surprised to see it under $7 at the store that I thought it was a misprint. As a brand new player, I found the Dragonguard Elite deck to be unfortunate to play against Cyclone Summoner but the fact that they are redeemable on Arena is Fantastic; Arena helped me learn quickly and having complimentary decks and booster packs really expedited my ability to recognize better cards and build a better deck within a week of picking it up. I'd recommend the kit for these reasons, as a jump into it.

There were about 8 of us at this round table and he just starts flinging them into the center and we just started grabbing them like hungry, hungry hippos. My first rare I managed to bend the corner on was a Verduran Enchantress. Later that day, after we all skipped class to learn how to play, I went to the closest shop and bought a starter deck of 4th Edition and Ice Age. Opened a Sorceress Queen and a Hecatomb and some dumb bird that was a 0/1, which I promptly traded for a Will o' the Wisp because it could at least regenerate and was in the colors of my new favorite rares.

Looking at some of these premade decks coming out now is making me miss my Krenko The Mob Boss goblin commander deck that I had customized a bit from the starter pack. I just got the most recent dueling decks (starter kit) package. 🙄 OMG! Who puts together a white and blue deck and a red and green deck!?!? Green takes time to get going and red is super fast so now you have a mediocre playing deck? I have seen black and white work well together, but white and blue? Unfortunately my memories aren't that clear on how I started with Magic, but I learned to play the game from the Starter level product with a Rhox on the front. This had a player A and player B booklet taking both players trough their first 5 turns with 22-card decks with only creatures and sorceries, then adding 15 cards including instants, artifacts and enchantments to learn the game. The best part about this was that, while the cards were in english, all the rule-booklets were in my native language, allowing me to learn everything I needed for player-level understanding of the game without assistence. While MTG Arena fulfills the role of the player-booklets via it's tutorial, it can still be overwhelming to take the step that comes after unlocking all the free decks. Replicating my experience would be to have an easily discoverable link to a page where you can choose your language to open a rulebook in that language that explains things the way the rulebooklet in the starter level product did.
