  • Been interested in installing CushCore, but haven't committed because of the reputation tire inserts have had for difficulty of installation? Well we've decided to make a step-by-step tutorial showing you how to install CushCore quickly and easily. This is solely a tutorial showing how to install CushCore XC tire inserts, but if you have any questions about CushCore in general or anything about the installation process, feel free to drop them in the comment section below and we'll be glad to respond the best we can!
CushCore is a foam-like insert that is installed in your wheelset to give your rims an increased amount of protection while simultaneously providing an improved ride feel for your bike. CushCore provides a proclaimed 50% increase in impact absorption for rim protection and less rider fatigue, 16% better suspension performance for improved bike performance in rougher terrain, 35% more sidewall support for an improved feel in corners, and 12% more vibration absorption leading to 3% less riding resistance for smoother rolling.
After I broke a few carbon wheels on my Santa Cruz Megatower and pinched the sidewalls of NUMEROUS tires, I decided to buy some CushCore XC and blindly install it myself. Following one simple tip, I installed it quickly and was genuinely confused about how easy the process ended up being. After the first ride on CushCore I was sold and my persistent wheel-related troubles immediately subsided. On top of the added protection, I also noticed a greatly improved ride feel which was icing on the cake. Feedback from the bike through rough sections was greatly dimmed down, but not totally muted with the XC inserts, which I feel would take some of the fun out of the riding experience.
Mark decided to buy the same CushCore XC inserts for his Specialized Enduro so we figured that it only makes sense to make a video showing you all the install process in hopes that we can help anyone else out there looking to install CushCore, or any other insert, to protect their wheels and improve their ride!

Do it on an ibis asymmetrical wheel without wanting to throw your bike off a cliff and I’ll be impressed

Umm - at 11:13 you put the tire on. WOW. I've put on 10-15 of these (maxxis & schwalbe) & I have NEVER SEEN A LOOSER BEAD. I pre-stretch my tires (learned from experience). I've used old tires - no difference. Typically I have to compress the cushcore to put the tire on. Then you have to go to work (20 mins later you get it on with sore fingers). NOTE: I love cushcore - but this video seems to show a tire that is as loose as... well... loose as a knot tied by a 1-year old.

I read your comment 5 minutes into the video. The second I saw "loose tire" I said FORGET IT!!! My Schwalbe's are tighter than a freakin' banjo string. Thanks for helping me not waste another 20 minutes on a video that doesn't reflect the sore-fingered misery of my actual life🙂

I've found the best way to "loosen" a bead is to mount it on the rim with a tube first. Let it sit for a day, then give it a try. Once a tire is mounted & used, it seems to go on & off easier (this video is probably with a used tire). Also, the cush core "Bead Bro" makes the job 25% easier.

why can't you put the tire on one side first. Then insert the CC like you would a tube back in the day and then the second side of the tire? Just wondering if anyone has tried that.

I've tried and its basically impossible to get the CC back in. I almost had it on and it popped the bead off.

I just did this on a Reserve 30SL and maxxis Aspen 2.4 combo. It worked perfectly. Now granted I was doing this on an already setup wheel that I had about 100 miles on. Just popped off the left bead used soapy water in a spray bottle lube to it up and slide in the insert (with out a trashcan or bucket). I also wore gloves and I used as much soapy water as i felt necessary. YMMV

I thnk this is actually impossible on new tires with a solid bead

Haha yeah some tires are definitely harder than others. One thing that I like to do when they're being difficult is unfold my new tires and leave them in the sun for 10-15 minutes then toss them on. Gets the rubber a little more malleable so it's not as much of a headache, this works great for using a regular pump to set the bead as well.

@usabicycles video is spot on. I just put a 29" pro with brand new 2.4" Maxxis DHR DH casing. took me about 20 mins, nothing but 2 tyre levers..
