- A beginner chalk paint DIY with a chippy finish is a great way to start! I find this look beautiful and forgiving as a beginner.
In this video I show you an easy way to create a chippy patina that has a soft, whitewashed end result. Perfect for minimalist and primitive decor. And as always, using easy to find, affordable products.

Looks great. Thanks for sharing. I’m a newbie to this so it would help to get more verbal explanation on the steps. A lot of what you do is probably a given for the experienced but some need a little more tutorial.
I did get the general gist though. Thank you!
Liked the video until there was no more Instruction, what is that he sprayed into the salt???
I’d love to know the answer to this question also. I’m assuming it’s water but I’d rather not test the theory to find out I was wrong. Such a beautiful piece
I love that so much!! I like how you really don’t know how it’s gonna look until you scrape. Really nice. Great idea for old pieces that are really beat up and it seems pretty effortless compared to hours of layering and sanding.
Would love to see more like this! Love the chippy, vintage look.
I loved how this project turned out!! It’s beautiful!
I have my grandmother’s old sewing machine case that I’m going to try your technique on.
Thank you for sharing your tip 😊
I love love love this piece
Wow !!!! That looks amazing ! I can’t wait to try it , I hope I can achieve something similar to yours. Well done husband too👍. Than you .
Great job! Never heard of this method before. Tfs.
Did you sand it first before you beggin??
Did you mix salt in your chalk paint
This is sooooo beautiful 😍 Is that water you spray on the salt?
Thank you! It is just water in a fine mist spray bottle
Love this! Just subbed ❤️
So glad to hear that!
What happens when you use salt and scrape it
You don’t do sanding or priming to your furniture?
Did you let each side dry individually for 24 hours or did you stand it up with the salt on the sides and just dried it once? Will the salt stay on the vertical surface when you stand it up or does it drip off.
Also I noticed some dark gray tones under to he paint but the piece is chocolate brown, is the dark gray just from the paint interacting with the salt, please do another one with the camera further back if possible.
We had to let it dry with salt laying on it flat like a table so yes def had to rotate to get that a few times 😅 they grey tones came from the really old wood that had been water damaged. I did this finish on a newer piece and no gray happened at all
@@blacksheephouse ok, thanks so much, really appreciate it. It's beautiful. I just transitioned all my furniture to french country from ultra modern and I got it all on Facebook market, found some beautiful stuff, so now come the hard work. I've been researching the Gustavian style paint so things wouldn't be so stark white. This will be so nice for some of my pieces.
@@blacksheephouse Please do another piece like this with the camera further back - love your channel - thank you.
Can you explain how the salt turns dark and stains the paint?
I’m no science person at all, but I the salt gets chipped away and leaves the original wood behind and where it waters down the paint creates some dimensions in the colors you get. I also used an old raw wood piece so could be some of the dirt or tannins in the wood coming out too.
can i do it with my melamine wood?
I'm not sure, I think it works so well because it sinks into the wood. Hope that helps and let me know if you try!
I missed what was in the spray
Just water
I love it! So after you did the salt scrapping did you reapply more paint or was that the final step? How did you sealed this piece? Thank you thank you as always great video! 🥰
I’m glad you liked it! It’s a fun finish, I didn’t apply any more paint, but I did use some clear wax to seal it afterwards. Also, side note is that you need a dry environment or the salt never dries, I just did this one on a hot day but since it’s getting cold and wet out you may have to bring inside to dry!
@@blacksheephouse what did you spray on top of it?
How do you even know this
For the life of me I can’t get this salt to discolor the chalk paint
I don’t think the salt is discoloring the paint I think it’s the natural wood tannins coming out like what happens if you paint with white paint and don’t prime with Shellac primer prior to painting. So if you sand your wood before you paint most likely tannins will come out. I just painted a light colored desk and I had so much tannins coming out even with three coats of primer I had to keep putting primer even over my paint so this would’ve been an awesome technique to do because I had so many issues with it trying to make it perfect.
This one is blowing my mind! Salt? I never would have thought to use salt 🧂🤍
