- Recently I travelled around Galicia and thought I would share some of my acquired wisdom of the area. If you want to know whether or not it’s worthwhile visiting Galicia, whether it does in fact, always rain, what Gallegos are like and whether the food is actually that big of a deal, make sure to watch this video.
All opinions shared and honest and true to my personal experience there.

More like Portugal's secret just like the Astúrias. They're just in spain's territory, they should be treated almost as different countries, states, because they are not spanish and they always fought not to be. That's just history but then again, the "winners" write history so I guess that's why only the real Iberians know this.
@@chefehenriques8392 Portugal is just part of Galicia. You were a county within the Kingdom of Galicia that broke away. That's the truth. Galicia used to encompass everything from about Porto northwards. Anyway, Galicia has been part of Spanish history for many centuries.

4 years - Did this happen?
Spanish people in Argentina are usually called "Gallegos"...because there was a huge migration movement in the beginning of last century.
Thats true....my mother ended up in mar de plata...then due to a family tragedy on my fathers side in australia...then ended up in perth western australia...i now born of gallego woman ...now an australian . my uncle says there is a gallego in every part of the world....the funniest thing is the south west / southern parts of my australian state geographically, are identical to parts of galica...ironic....and when i went to my mothers town and nearby they had eucalyptus trees planted that just connected all my visual memories...so im now a lost soul...where do i belong...
@@virgomonkey68 eucalyptus are not a native species its actually grown because its a fast wood to chop but it deteriorates the rich soil so much that native species have it harder. Also because the native species are carballos and castiñeiros (galician name) and they grow super slow and with knotted woods. Sorry for the english im galician hahaha
The best part of Galicia it's something that unfortunately most tourists can't experience and it's the recipes that each family knows, and I swear that never in my whole life, I've had a bacalo that tasted like my grandma's
I would believe that! The abuelas are the best cooks after all x
So true, my grandma's method of putting the chicken in the oven and going for misa - that's not even something you can teach.
I was already following your nice videos about Spain. But, for me, this is special because I'm a Galician who lives in A Coruña. It's realy lovely to see how you enjoy our land and your funny and clever opinions. It's a pity that there was mist when you visited the cliffs, the view is breathtaking. The small house you saw there is the ancient shelter for the watchmen who attend a beacon (like the beacons of Gondor in Lord of the Rings) that was part of a system of beacons all along the north coast of Galicia (to warn of sea attacks). At least you saw this shelter; next time, the views... ;)
Thank you for this wonderful video about my land, and waiting for the upcoming...
Eligio Rodríguez thanks so much for this comment! As you can probably tell I LOVED Galicia a lot! I would love to move to A Coruña one day, and I don't say that about every city I visit!
That's so interesting! Thanks for sharing that extra info! It was actually really amazing despite the clouds but when I'm back I'll definitely try and see the view again! Besos!
You can not imagine the incredible places you have not seen, there would be many to list.
The empanada took the Spaniards to America, but, what they call pie are what we call here empanadillas, mini pies. I love your videos, come back soon.
I need to go to Galicia, it is on my list. I am living in Malaga, but I have never been to Galicia!
@@underthespanishsky6637 pues ya estas tardando...
I really don't get those downvotes, since this is actually a super positive video about Galicia.
I've never been there, alas. I'm from Northern Germany and I know several Galicians who came to my hometown area as guest workers in the 70s, when there was still rampant unemployment & rural poverty in Galicia and tourism was virtually nonexistent in this relatively remote part of Spain at the time. These people are indeed a super cool and likeable bunch!
people just read the title of the video, which is the opposite of the content....
Shhhh! we don't want the Atlantic to become the new Benidorm.

It won't because it's too cold in the summer

As a spanish guy, I have travelled around the country to a lot of places, and Galicia is in my top 5 I would say, no doubt of that. My favourite place so far is the Spanish Pyrenees: Benasque and surroundings. The landscape in monte perdido near Ordesa is simply fascinating. The air there is so clean... Galicia is a hidden gem! So beautiful!
Galician from A Coruña here. I actually laughed when you mentioned the hipsters thing about my city. Just a thing for your next time in our land. "X" in Galician is pronounced just like "sh" in English. So Rías Baixas would be something like "reeahs bye-shas".

@@ElyceBehrsin Hola Saludos de bueu Pontevedra this town is next to marin
Hi from Baixo Miño! Great video! I see you travel with your dogs! If you ever plan to visit Vigo, I recommend you to extend your visit to Porto as well. There're beautiful places between those two cities, and also a wonderful spot between Galicia and Portugal, the natural park Peneda-Gerês(Portugal)-Serra do Xurés (Galicia). It's beautiful, really close to Vigo or Porto, and perfect for a hike with the dogs.
Also, the Galician side is Ourense, so if you go back to galicia through this mountains, you'll end up driving towards the hot springs area.
My husband and I did it couple of times with our dog.
From vigo to porto there's Nigran (gorgeous drive by the coast), Baiona (medival village, where Columbus arrived from America), Oia (monastery on the beach), a guarda (santa trega mountain with the Celtic Village and the views), o rosal (amazing wineries and mills in the river), tomiño (riverside walks, castles and bridge to Portugal), Tui (medieval village with a twin in the Portuguese side of river miño, also a bridge to Portugal), and then beautiful villages towards Portugal, like Vilanova de Cerveira, Caminha, viana do Castelo, Vila do Conde, Ponte de Lima, Barcelos, Braga. You can have breakfast in one, lunch in the next, etc, and get to porto beautifully.
I apologise for such a long comment, but you can tell I'm in love with my little corner of Spain.
I'm glad you enjoyed your time in Galicia; we'll love to have you back.

Saludos

I’m galician. Thank you very much for the video. I love how you focus on galician places and its advantages. I missed kind of a reference about our language. Grest job !!!
Probably, the empanada from Argentina comes from Galicia, because in previous times, the Galicians migrated in a great mass to Argentina❤

That was a great, easygoing tour! You described everything to the T while showing Galicia's beautiful nooks a crannies that gave the viewer enough time to listen to the descriptions while enjoying the gorgeous views! Tierra descriminada por los gobiernos.
Tierra de gente de sufrimientos

So glad you finally made it to Galicia. Sorry you found such a foggy day to see the cliffs, shame! @@ElyceBehrsin if you ever do get the chance to go back there (the name of the town is Cangas ^^) be sure to visit praia de Lagoelas (Lagoelas beach). It's kind of hard to get there because you need to walk for, like, 15 to 20 minutes (there's no car access and, in fact, it is soooo hidden that not many people even in Cangas know about it), but it's totally worth it. Just google it and you'll know what I mean. And while you're there, check out a restaurant called Peralta, nearby. You won't regret it, trust me. And once you're done eating, there's this really cool castle in ruins called Castillo del conde de Aldán that you can go to just walking five minutes from that very restaurant. Also, I don't know how familiar you became with cruceiros while in Galicia, but, if you are into cruceiros at all, Cruceiro de Hío is the one you want to see, it's the most famous one in Galicia. Perhaps you did see it on your trip already, because it's reeeeally close to the only way there is to the lighthouse you liked ;) Again, love your videos!! XOXO

Hi Elyce, I live in Argentina but since I have Galician ancestry I visited last October the land of Galicia and I was amazed, and now I am amazed again to find a woman from California praising Galicia. Keep travelling.
I'm actually from Australia haha. Perhaps more random. You too 😃
Galicia has really a lot of beautiful natural places and very very good food, specially the seafood in the coast. I from Cedeira, a very beautiful town right down that cliff in "Serra da Capelada" (yeah it's the highest one in mainland Europe) and I'm really sad you couldn't see anything up there because the views are just amazing. Besides there are a really small place (like 50people live there) called San Andrés de Teixido, its a place of peregrination, I think the second most visited in Europe or Spain, and its beautiful too with a lot of legends and miths around it. And if you want the whole pack, near there, but with a risky way, down the cliffs its the only beach in the world made of black sand that's not volcanic formation(?) (de origen no volcánico). Obviously you have to visit my town too, Cedeira, its really beautiful with beautiful beaches and sigths all over the town, good food, best "percebes" and nice people.
I hope you come back someday and don't miss Santiago again in your travel, no excuses for not visiting
10:52 O Cañón do Río Sil is my favourite place in the whole world 😍 So I highly recommend you to go to another viewer called "Los Balcones de Madrid" near a town called Parada Do Sil. This little town is well provided for tourism: it has beautiful routes to walk between nature (I always feel like walking into a fairy tale), there are some museums to visit, there is the viewer (which is well secured and prepared for tourism) and, as always, there is good food 😋
I didn't know you could do walks from there? Now I feel ripped off because it was the view point I originally picked but because of the weather we only did three instead of four including it! Will definitely go back! Thanks for the tip x
Such good vibes!!! Definitely you guys enjoyed Galicia. Loved it.
P.S. Chapo is handsome
So many good vibes! That's the perfect way to explain Galicia actually!
Thanks ☺️
Im from Vilouxe, that rock at 10:52 was were i used to go with my grandma every afternoon. The big house to the left when you cutted the video its ours :D. Im glad you liked it!
Oh I love hearing little stories like this! That’s very sweet and yes I loved it
I've been to Galicia since I was 3 every single summer and the sun was beautiful and the food is fantastic not to forget the street party for the vine grape albariño. In Cambados lots of dancing happy people street food and vine ❤❤❤totally awesome

Great video about Mi Tierra!!! Next time try Vigo as well
I intend to! Thanks heaps xx
Hi! Great video, just wanted to drop a tiny recommendation. If you like sightseeing and amazing landscape like the Sil Cayons I really really recommend you to visit "Arribes del Duero" in the border along Zamora and Salamanca with Portugal. Ok, I know it's not Galicia but it's incredible and breathtaking as well. Saludos!
Oh it looks amazing! I just did a quick google search. Plus I'm always looking for new places to discover...everywhere :)
@@ElyceBehrsin keeping the adventurous spirit up! :D
Rober Arévalo I try!
Cies islands is very nice! Best pulpo is the one father my used to make because it was free and very good, saturated in pimenton and olive oil and finish off the sauce with bread of course.
Yummmmm! Sounds delicious! Oh the bread, I miss it already!
Great video!! Very well explained what Galicia is all about!!!
Hello;
When I was in A Corona, I loved the Pupo. I also had sea urchins, escargot. I also met a romantic interlude.
All the best Shaun of NYC
Galicia should've been part of Portugal. But, I know many Galicians today would be opposed to that idea.
galicia existed before spain and portugal existed portugal should of become part of galicia instead
@@manuelvilar4496 I wouldn’t be against creating a Galaico-Portuguese state, im portuguese btw
I'm from the north of Portugal and I love Galicia too !
I'am of Galcian descent from my father's side, viva Galicia!
Ah I bet you go back all the time :) x
@@ElyceBehrsin I never been there.
@@Stgfre you must go when you can :)
@@ElyceBehrsin I like to go one day.
Always Galicia!!! 💙
i remember i wrote here few weeks ago when you made a video about the north of Spain. I have seen that you have felt the difference between this two sides, north and south, it is completely different, north is more autenthic than the south, you realized that you can't find "flamenco shows" and "paella is not the first choice and even more, you can't find it" but you have discovered that the interior has is own appeal, and a really big one, is not fake like a tourist show for foreign people...this is real. I know that more people love sun, fiesta, alcohol and beach...you have the east and the south for it, but if you are looking for the real thing...you must go to the north and you will discover a a really new and diferent countrycountry. I glad to know that you enjoyed it.
I loved it! I'm living in Cantabria and I love it here too! You're right, there's less show and more authenticity here. It's quite refreshing! Thanks for the comment!
That was a GREAT VIDEO...THANKS LOVE. VERY BEAUTIFUL...THE SPEAKER. :-)!!
Thanks so much. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Seeing as you really liked Galicia, then the next time that you are around here, you should visit the Playa de Carnota, The town of Muros and also the town of Noya( in Gallego Noia), these three places aren't very far away from each other and they are all on the west coast. I am absolutely certain that you will absolutely love them. These places also belong to what is known as As rias baixas or en castelian Rias Baja's(the lower coast).
Ah thanks soooo much for the tips! I’ll add them to my Galicia google doc for next time 🤗
@@ElyceBehrsin You are very welcome
Next time you should visit the interior of Galicia, mountains as Courel, forests, citys of Lugo and Santiago.
Best octopust is in some places of Lugo ;)
I would love to! I just posted a photo of the canyons to my photography insta and it made me want to go back and explore Galicia more!!!
Nice video. I hope you really enjoy with our little country. You always welcome.
Thank yo very much! xx
