    Reel mower vs rotary mower is a greatquestion. One step to achieving the ultimate lawn fix is to select a mower that cuts well. The best lawn mower 2020 in my opinion is allett mowers. I prefer a reel mow vs rotary mow because the cut quality of the reel mower is superior. No matter how you look at it a push reel mower vs a push rotary mower the reel mower wins. The reel cuts like sharp scissors where the rotary mower cuts like a machete.

      I too mowed approx 0.5 acre with a no engine reel mower. My dad was concerned with the safety issues of the power mowers of the 1960's. Then the drop dead engine was invented and I got a power mower and was glad . I have a 12 year old mower and when it needs replaced a 'reel' mower is being considered. Grass and debris in the streets ? Not back in my day.

    I just started reel mowing.. I have a true cot 21 inch and I bought a Sun Joe cordless 16 inch cut. I use my Kobalt 80 volt to do the trimming or outline of curbside and driveway, sidewalk. I remove all grass with my sweeper. Ok. Back to the reel mowers. Since I've started reel mowing, my yard looks 100 percent better. The Bermuda grows tighter or more dense. It's unbelievable the difference. Now it took about 3 cuttings, but you notice it. I cutt my Bermuda twice a week and only trim once a week. I like both reel mowers, but favor the Sun Joe. Quieter than the tru cut and also the tru cut will work the hell out of you. The Sun Joe you do have to push. But the reels are power by the ion 24 volt battery... I also purchased a Sun Joe Scarifier to use next year. I bought a dethatcher but quickly learned, you don't Dethatch Bermuda or any other grasses that have runner's. It will YANK the grass out of the lawn. Bad advice from someone on CZcams about using a dethatcher on Bermuda. Have fun...

    Reel mowers were common in the 60's, but they were top-heavy and fairly unwieldy, even propelled units, so it took an older teen / adult to operate it. I suspect the rotary became dominant simply because you could pawn the mowing job off to 11-year-olds. This was when I was around 11. Now I'm really showing my age, because I don't recall seeing a kid of ANY age mowing a lawn in at least ten years, so we've come full circle to an adult-only chore.

    • @howlis
      @howlis Před 4 lety +1

      I've used this type of mower for many years and it's not necessary to have it professionally sharpened every year, unless you hit a stone and dink the blade. These mowers don't like stones, any lawn should be well raked with a powered lawn rake to remove anything that could damage the blade. The design of the blade is such that the two blades sharpen each other as they cut, once in a while I attach a sharpener to the bottom blade and run the blade while the machine is static for about five seconds, that's all it takes. An oil change and a new spark plug once a year is all that's necessary.

    I still have the same Snapper 21" rotary mower that I used back when I was mowing 30+ yards a week in high school. (early 90s) The B&S finally gave up the ghost 2 seasons ago and I replaced it with a (DON'T JUDGE ME!) Harbor Freight engine, that has run like a champ thus far. In my opinion this thing has far and away the best self propelled mechanism of any mower I've used. It's easy to engage and disengage, it's rear wheel drive so it will still pull itself when you lift the front wheels up (if you want it to) it actually has a differential, so it doesn't tear the grass up when you make turns and the turntable transmission is dead simple and gives a great range of speeds. Having said all of that, I'm _trying_ to get my lawn level but with some medium/large oak and maple trees the roots are making that a challenge, but if I can get it decently level I may look into getting a reel mower at least for the front yard.

    My lawn is uneven so a reel mower is a no go from the start. I wouldn’t replace my Honda anyway. It’s a great mower and it’s really reliable. I probably wouldn’t get a British mower because my brother had a British sports car.

      @pestandlawnginja  Před 4 lety

      LOL love it! I think too many people get caught up on thinking the area has to be flat to use a reel mower. it doesn't. the roller causes less friction than the 4 wheels on a traditional rotary mower. There are plenty 2 wheel reel mowers as well.

    I remember many years ago my grandmother had a manual push reel mower and I hated it at the time. Now I wish i had one. The only reason i don't is because my lawn isn't level enough for a reel mower to work on it at this time. My personal opinion is the cut on the reel mower is way better and will keep your grass healthier with its amazing sharp blades and the ability to cut real low. Low grass blades promote better lateral spread of KBG which is my favorite grass type and with less energy being used up top of the grass, the roots will grow stronger and deeper... The reel mower is the REAL DEAL and i now wish i owned one. Great video...

    My dad has a reel mower. It's maybe 50-60 years old I'm guessing. Last year I started taking care of his lawn. I got an EGO electric mower last year to trim around all his trees, so we got rid of his push mowers. He had about 5, none of which worked. For whatever reason, I wanted to keep the reel mower. It was more for antique value than anything. I had no clue about em at the time. Barely know about em now. To me it was sort of like keeping a black and white tv. Now I'm leaning towards trying to fix it up and seeing how it cuts.

    Here in the UK they are called cylinder mowers not reel. These mowers were the original mowers most push driven before petrol or electric versions became available to the general public. A good cylinder mower cant be beaten however 100 to 150 dollars for a blade sharpened seems somewhat steep to me. It a 10 minute job if you have access to a.cylindrical grinder.

They look really quality, the cartridge system is very similar to swardman mowers. I just wish I could find a reel mower that’s less than $2,000 the wife won’t let me spend that much on a mower 🤣. For now I’ll just stick with my $20 Craigslist special lol. I did my first cut of the season this year at 1” and it does a beautiful cut for being a manual push reel mower. Just a ton of work and no rollers. I wish more people used reel mowers around here so the second hand market was bigger.

    Reel Mower VS Rotary Mower is like Apple vs. Oranges. When your lawn becomes a hobby....expense is not an object and cutting the grass is no longer a chore. A reel mower is ideal for Bermuda and grasses that looks great cut short. A rotary mower works great for tall fescue which does better (healthier with deeper roots) when you let it grow to 4 inches. Getting a reel mower blade sharpened is a pain plus you need to have your lawn leveled as flat as a possible. Like I stated. when you spend 2K plus on a reel mower and all those accessories, your lawn is now a hobby.

  • @thewholls7176

    Here in Australia when I was growing up the rotary style mowers in the 1970s were called “slashers” and they were used to mow down tall grass that was a foot and a half long out of control then to mow that grass nicely.... you used a lawnmower which was a cylinder mower...... popular brands were Scott Bonnar and Alroh.....
    Seemingly then in the 80s “slashers” became popular lawnmowers and were more domesticated in design and they weren’t big commercial “slashers” anymore.....
    I think there are subtle differences here also in what you’re cutting if you’re growing grass that’s kind of like what you see on the putting green I called at lawn if you are growing something like buffalo grass then that’s just grass not a lawn to my mind....
    A lawn is far more delicate and meticulous and a good example would be a putting green or a lawn bowling green which is a specific variety kept in a very manicured way that’s a lawn that’s where cylinder mowers are brilliant
    A rotary mower is in comparison are just a hack job to keep down uncontrolled growth down then people run around saying they have a lawn well they don’t to my mind..... Grass is grass and lawn is lawn and lawnmower is a cylinder mower a rotary mower is a slasher......
    AND
    Of course a slasher or a rotary mower can be bought at 1/10 the price of a cylinder mower in fact in most cases the cost of buying new blades for a cylinder mower and a bed knife set would be double that of most rotaries to buy the whole machine.....
    So there’s that.....

    To maintain a sharp edge just need to back lap with some grinding paist. Only get it ground if the reel if it is damaged otherwise your just wearing your reel down for no reason. Also the less wear on the reel the better it flings it into the catcher.

    • @pestandlawnginja
      @pestandlawnginja  Před 3 lety

      Thanks for your feedback. I've been diving into this subject. So far what I've learned from dealers that sell and maintain the reels is they prefer to NEVER backlap. creates an uneven edge and also distorts your bed knife. They recommend the homeowners grind the reel every season to every other season depending on use.

    Great video as always! But.. the cost to sharpen the reel mower.. I don’t know what the cost would be in US but I do it myself and what you need is basically a sharpening paste and at least here in Sweden that doesn’t cost a fortune. The lower blade.. I can’t remember the name in english you rarely have to sharpen but you simply adjust it so it gets a little higher (very simple but just adjust she screws very little). with the blades you take of the sides.. and switch side of the eh.. thingy that spins the blades.. that makes it go backwards.. and then you add a little sharpening paste and just let it spin around for a minute or two.. the switch the.. hm thingy back and put it all back as normal and.. there you go.. sharp as when you bought it.. simple and not expensive. Thats how I do it at least. Many videos out there how to sharpen a reel mower if you didn’t understand what I meant with thingy and so on ;)

      If you just over seeded I wouldn't do any herbicides for at least 9 weeks. the herbicides will cause issues and potentially kill the new grass. To answer your question on the sprayer you'll need to figure out how much liquid is coming out per minute, then you'll need to figure out how fast you go through 1000 sq ft. I have a video that helps people understand calibration. highly recommend you watch it.
