    Works great! czcams.com/users/postUgkxprGGPRQoChQaA8u58dt7miEpxQBKiWeJ More difficult with longer grass, though, but I was expecting that. I have a small back yard, it seemed like overkill to buy a lawnmower with an engine. This is easy to carry in and out of the basement through the bulkhead. Very sharp (be careful). At the back of the mower are little wheels, which I use when pulling the mower backwards, so it's easy to readjust direction. I'm including a photo which shows the before and after for my lawn when it was at its longest. For long grass like that you really have to put some muscle into it, and I needed to go into a new section of grass with some momentum, but when the grass is only an inch or two higher than regular cut height it's quite easy. The lawn is still patchy and full of weeds, but at least it's a good height! A step in the right direction.

    I live in the UK and use an allett 43 and love it. It is unusual for home users to use anything other than a rotary mower over here due to the cost of real mowers in general and battery mowers in particular. I have yet to find another allett owner near me or within my circle of friends, that how uncommon they are outside of public parks and sports grounds. I have found that I still need my rotary mower as well as the allett to get the grass down to a level the allett can handle if you have been unable to cut for any reason. Allet sells wheel attachments to handle long grass but to be honest, they are not very good, and when the grass is long the machine stops and blocks - a real pain in the but. I am a lawn geek and cut my grass every day, weather permitting and the allett gives a perfect finish with a good and well-defined stripe. I have upgraded to the higher number of blades for the cartage and it has been well worth it. I have a lot of other accessories and these all do the jobs they have been designed for. The lawn rake is excellent as is the crosscut attachment.

    • @ALLETTMOWERSUK
      @ALLETTMOWERSUK Před 2 lety

      cylinder mowers aren't for cutting long grass- the wheels are to use in an emergency so you can cut your lawn and the put the roller back on when its manageable- saves you having a rotary in the garage. Most customers cut 3x a week so the lawn never gets away from them

    Atco, and Hayter are two other premium well known brands used here in the UK. Although having said that, any decent cylinder mower will work wonders.
    I've been treating lawns for 20 years and quite proud of my own. I also share tips in my channel.
    My own set up are two low end commercial mowers, just your regular mowers made by Stihl around £250 ($300) each, which are used for the grunt work, and then I managed to find an old cylinder mower with large rear steel roller and small wooden roller for the front. Got this one off Facebook marketplace for a ridiculous low price of £40 (around $55). Its been my best find ever and cuts stunning stripes!
    Other than these I just cut regular and not too short and this goes a long way to keeping things nice.

  • @A_English_Gent
    @A_English_Gent Před 3 lety

    As i work for a company that sales lawn mowers in the UK and i demo a mower to a customer the cylinder mower is probably the best to get a lovely grass cut. the more level the lawn the better the results you'll get with this type of mower, the quick change cartages that you can get for aerating your lawn and dethatching your lawn will get the better turf results when used at the right time of year. also make sure that the cylinder blades and bottom blade may need attention now and then, a simple use of a piece of A4 paper and periodically that the cut from the cylinder and bottom blade have a smooth cutting action, you'll do this by hand so make sure the battery is disconnected or if fuelled mower that the spark plug lead is disconnected the paper should not drag between the cylinder and bottom blade it should be like a pair of scissors cutting across the whole width of the blade. the set crosshead screws at each end where the cartridge goes will alter the cut height distance for the cylinder to the bottom blade a slight turn is all that's needed and oil your blades will keep it good condition too 3 in 1 oil etc.

    @lloydblake959 Před 4 lety +3

    Yeah.
    I'm from the UK and have had one f these now for over 20 years with almost no maintenance.
    I think they used to be called Suffolk Punch, which mine is.
    I have a petrol, but before that you could get them in a manual push version for very small lawns.
    You used to see them quite a lot in the 70's & early 80's but the fashion to use them disappeared with the generation from that era.
    Then rotary's became popular and cheaper but the downside was the overuse was f plastic, and when that breaks !!!
    Note of caution.
    You do need a reasonably flat lawn for these or they will leave scalp marks or g down one side of a dip and make it worse every time you go over it, so it's not for the rank amateur mower who only mows when they get embarrassed ever 6 weeks.
    It has a comfort zone which it likes to operate, so your out there every week, two at the most.
    But you do get the reward of a lawn better than your living room carpet eventually.
    Good choice of lawn type as well, we in the U.K. Use fine fescue lawns for the look I think your all referring to, bowling green style, very different to the cabbage that you call grass in the U.S. (no disrespect intended, I understand why it's used).
    Hope that was useful..

    I don't own a cylinder/reel mower and my grass is always green. Our secret in the UK is not the mowers it's the awful weather as you put it.
    Rain, rain and more rain.
    If we don't water the lawn in the summer it soon goes yellow.
    The amount of rain we get also means we use different grass varieties in the UK to the US.
    The grass blades are thinner and softer.

    We don't call it a reel mower, we call it a *cylinder mower* because the multiple rotating blades form a cylindrical shape. I don't understand why the term "reel mower" exists - can someone explain it? I'm planning to get an Allett Kensington 17 next year... All the best, Rob in Switzerland.

    I remember when most people in England had a lawn mower. Front lawn and a back lawn. Now days the lawns have been concreted over for car parking. As a schoolboy I use to cut lawns with a petrol mower. Everyone had the traditional mower similar to the one here. The the flymo type came in. Totally useless for getting a lawn looking great. Traditional lines and so on.

    Just to say to anyone watching, the general home user still uses a rotary style mower there the blade is flat to the ground like the stated. It’s only really when you gat to a certain price range of housing, estates and enthusiasts that you see this style of mower👍.

      Not so Carter P. I live in the southwest, semi-retired and need to replace my rotary mower with a reel type that will cut my short, tif grass low. A rotary won't due what this type grass needs. I have less than 700 sf to cut, could've reseeded with full bermuda but wanted something nicer. I'm not wealthy by any stretch but have saved enough to afford an Allett. I suppose I've become an enthusiast, but have the time now to enjoy a plush yard....there are more expensive mowers but the Allett fits the bill for my needs. It will be the last mower for me.

    i,m from the UK the allett mowers are some of the best going. atco is also very good as was Dennis, now sadly gone. i would, however, not recommend them for people that are not lawn professionals. they are buggers to operate. take a tone of money to run and repair. but most importantly need a top quality lawn to run on. if you have kids, pets or a life. you will never have a lawn fit for these bits of kit.
    also most of the methods we use to look after laws don't work in the US as the weather is different. i have seen some really good tutorials on youtube from US turf guys. but what they said would not work in the UK. its just hoarse for courses. we don't do it better just different thats all.

      Silver Cymbal I believe it. The price isn’t bad for the base machine but it’s no cheap either. I’d bet they don’t have a large clientele base so their thought probably is if you use it you won’t want them to leave with it.

Will be getting my Allett Liberty 43 next week with the lawn rake/scarifier to remove thatch. As of today all these mowers are sold out in the USA with a 6-8 week wait time. So, when the people that comment above about these being overpriced and no one uses them, just ignore them. Some of us can afford quality and have the time to keep and maintain a nice yard while others have time for ridiculing others and speaking with no knowledge, other than telling us they drive a inexpensive beater...sounds to me like, if you don't care about your property much, that's your choice.
