How to DETHATCH an UGLY LAWN - CHEAP

  • Dethatching your lawn is great but it can be expensive & a lot of work. Here is a solution that is CHEAP, FAST & EASY. I review this Greenworks dethatcher & put it to the test. Spring dethatching is a great way to help renovate your tired, ugly lawn & using a machine can make the job so much easier than raking by hand. This is a great option.

Bought the machine after seeing this. Thanks for this review. My personal view:
      - some parts are still super cheap mine came with an already defective plastic piece used for holding the upper bar in. The screw head to that also came apart during the install without even tightening it. Good thing greenworks customer service was willing to send a replacement piece post showing proof of purchase. I am not a tools kinda girl and the simple it is to put it together all around becomes great. This was super easy to put together only thing was tightening that lower section with a screw driver as mentioned in the video is a tight spot.
      - I have a 15,000sq ft lawn and the cord was definitely a pain in the butt running over 170ft lengthwise had to keep moving it stop readjust and keep moving. I wouldn’t like this on big lawns just my personal preference. Once i figured the routine of moving the cord it went much better
      - I had cut my grass the day before 2-3 inch and it took me about 2 hrs for one round at medium height. I can tell i still had thatch left but didn’t have enough time to do round two post picking up the dead grass
      - For a much smaller areas thumbs up great for large areas not so much the tool for me just because i mind messing around with the cord past 100ft. If have some larger debris on the grass it did get caught up and had to stop to remove it each time it was stuck but overall still removed quite a bit of dead grass. Will do it again in the fall since this rain won’t stop

I ordered one of these and I can confirm everything that was said in this video. I too was skeptical when I ordered it, but I figured for the price... if it sucks, I'm not out much. I was immediately surprised. The first pass I did, my wife stood by saying "OH MY GOD!" We hadn't ever dethatched the lawn at our current location, so it was way overdue. I ran across the lawn in one direction, then cleaned up the thatch and hit it again in the opposite direction so that my passes crisscrossed my original passes. To pick up that thatch, though, we had a raking party with my wife, the kids and even a couple of grandkids, who played in the thatch as much as they raked it. I tried the mower option, but there was just so much thatch that I could only make one or two passes with the mower before the bag was full. I would recommend this dethatcher, but only if you're willing to shell out the money for a heavy duty extension cord (it really is necessary). Great product for a low price. Nice to see others are discovering this gem, too. 🙃

I aerated several times fertilized and overseeded, but never could get some areas looking dense and lush. Only by dethatching these areas pulled up the debris that allowed the grass to thrive. My guess was years of improper mowing caused tons of dead material that choked things out. It is hard work, but worth it if you’re a lawn junkie.

Ah I should've found this clip earlier... Just dethatched my front yard lawn with this dethatcher and "a couple of" rakes... Almost dead from these... Yesterday I decided to gave myself a breath on my back yard lawn and switched to my mower to finish with the debris - worked!! Just as is in this clip! Gosh!

  • @jconsentino

I can also vouch for the Sun Joe scarifier and dethatcher. It comes with the power rake attachments (metal tines) and a scarifier (somewhat like a seed slice) attachment. Very important to get the correct gauge extension cord, and it also depends on the length you intend to go with it. I have a pretty large backyard and needed to get a 12 gauge 100’ cable which set me back $80, so that is another cost to consider. These machines really do get a lot of debris out of the lawn so be prepared to have a place to put all the debris or to bag it. Happy detaching/powerraking!

Great review. My wife bought me one of these last month after she saw me raking. I mentioned in your video last month. The fact that it’s electric it’s one less engine to maintain that you use once a year. I used my red max backpack blower to amass the debris into a pile.

I don't have this brand but have one that's nearly identical. It's amazing and highly effective! You explained it well including don't allow it to go too fast to get the best results. Lightly restrain and hold it back as it propels forward. Then bag it with a mower preferably but bag will fill quickly, dump often. Sooo much easier than a rake and better results. Work smarter, not harder.
Also, work moving away from the plug to extent possible to avoid as much hassle with the cord.

      @briand9754 Před 4 lety +1

      You don’t.
My lawn is excellent. I’m not trying to brag, but neighbors have commented.
The keys are to mow sufficiently high; only weeds will grow if you cut it very short.
Fertilize regularly. Personally I go with Milorganite, works steady and no burn risk compared to synthetic fertilizers. Makes the soil rich in nutrients and helps break down clippings.
Finally - water. You can’t have a great lawn in the summer if you let it dry out. Once brown - it’s too late. At first sign of losing lush green, water!
Dethatching is rarely needed. A little thatch is very beneficial as it helps the soil retain moisture during dry periods. I mulch, not bag, and have never dethatched at my current home and don’t need to.

Great video. I got the Sun Joe unit this year. Very similar, but it also have a scarifier cartridge. It also has a bag which is next to useless... if you think your mower bag filled up quick! I also like how it will pop loose acorns. They make a fun sound too 😬 The only tip I would offer that you didn’t is plan your route wisely so that you’re not constantly moving the extension cord around! That’s a pain. But for around $160 bucks, including a new extension cord, it’s cheaper than renting a machine 2 or 3 times!
