This is another of my favorite OSB episodes and an example of the superior screen writing back then as compared to now. I think being in black and white, when the face on the wall is finally revealed, it's alot more terrifying. Note also, the viewer could see the face in the background just as the Count orders his wife to look at the wall, after all the build up and never seeing it before, Brrrrrrrr, Well done.
I thought everybody knew the classic Biblical tale of the Babylonian king seeing "the handwriting on the wall." The king asked all of his seers and wise men in the court to translate what it said, but none of them could. Then Daniel, one of the Israelite captives who had been taken from Jerusalem when it was overrun by the Babylonian empire, stepped forward and said he could read it for the king. Shortly thereafter, the Babylonian empire was overrun by the Persians, who took over the land. As the story goes, somehow a gate to the city was left open over a water way and the Persians just floated right into the city in the dead of night on rafts through the open gate. They had taken control of the palace and killed a number of soldiers before the rest of the Babylonians could even get organized. "Seeing the handwriting on the wall" or "He's not seeing the handwriting on the wall" is an old saying - at least, I grew up hearing it and still use it (70 years old).
I have very warm feelings about the series. We had a very difficult time trying to tune in the TV. This would mean climbing on the roof to turn the antenna for the best reception. My mother and sleeping dad would watch those episodes that we were able to tune in. I think we only watched about 10 episodes but to me it was a good feeling to have my parents in the room with me. Funny how different people see the same.
I was more afraid of One Step Beyond episodes than the Twilight Zone or the Outer Limits when I was a child. Something truly haunting and unnerving about this series.
@@virginiaschaefer2705 I have since learned that they are based on true stories. Had I known this fact back when I was a kid, I would have been even more frightened.

@Veda Combs: Me too! Still my favorite series to this day (I'm 73) and favorite theme music too. The spookiest ever.
Hands down, that was the most convincing scream I've ever seen and heard!! She scared the living daylights out of me! I seriously hope this episode doesn't work its way into my dreams tonight.
I agree, for me the chills weren't from the image itself, but from her reaction to it. You could almost believe she died of fright.
I vaguely remembered this. From a long time ago. I always like shows, like this
I liked that the director of this had a lot of biblical knowledge
You are so right, and I liked that too. Being a Christian that I am
@@jannibal9273 wow very interesting thank you for sharing wonder what knowledge I'll have at 70 haha just turned 20
Cant believe I've found your videos, for years I've watched The Twilight Zone, Tales from the Crypt and now I've found One step Beyond. Thank you
Glad you found this channel . . .
No doubt you watched the Outer Limits, too? 😘
Another great episode. Thanks for the upload.
Love the story. The subtitles are hilarious at times. Madame llama Keys…take the monkey upstairs 😂😂
I was more afraid of One Step Beyond episodes than the Twilight Zone or the Outer Limits when I was a child. Something truly haunting and unnerving about this series.
@Roz Christopherson: Certainly for children . . . I'd agree.
Roz Christopherson gpñ
The intro music on OSB is scarier. And Rod Serling seemed less frightening than John Newland.
They're all based on true stories.
@@virginiaschaefer2705 I have since learned that they are based on true stories. Had I known this fact back when I was a kid, I would have been even more frightened.
This one and The Stone Cutter are my favorite episodes, but really I love almost every episode.
These were the best shows. The black and white,to me,made them even better. It's great seeing these again. I LOVE YOU TUBE. Thank you
Fantastic! Stylishly creepy and memorable.
The thing of learned about "spirits" is...they cannot harm or hurt u.
But real people can.
I know better
My father always said the same thing.
I used to watch One Step Beyond back in the day. One of my favorites.
I grew up watching The Twilight Zone, but never heard of this show! Now, I'm going to watch a few! :)
One of the Best Episodes.....
Never heard of this show but for once YT recommended something I actually want to watch
I am in "Antique RoadShow" heaven. The sets of this episode are lavishly adorned with collectibles. I appreciate set decorators and property masters.
You have to admire actors who can go down a bunch of stairs without looking down to the steps.
It's a skill that passes unnoticed. You can only apreciate it when you try it yourself.
I'm watching this as I lie trapped in bed by a dislocated (and broken) ankle.....and, yup....I was rushing down some stairs without paying attention to the fact thst the bottom step was only 2 inches high...
Was watching the ballet Romeo and Juliet . Juliet runs down some stairs from the balcony and leaps off the last 4or 5 In slippery pointe shoes .
@@leanie9660 May you heal quickly, my friend.
Right on, Fa Da. I've seen and been aware of this several times in many different movies-TV shows - thinking to myself, 'Don't trip! Don't fall!'
Thanks for uploading these shows! I really appreciate it. Well done 👏👏👏👏
Glad you found them . . .
Never heard of this show! Wow nice!
@Shebba Sanders: Here's a video about why: czcams.com/video/QR8CRNhWPX8/video.html
Damn good film but I think the best was The Navigator where a Ghost ordered a change of course of a large sailing ship ! West By North West.
The soundstage for that episode was excellent.
I love these, first watched them when I was only about 8 or 9 with my late mother, she loved them too. Thank you.
Back in old days, cinema can cast 50 year olds and still win the general public. Now, you should be young as 16 y/o to be casted because most of the audience or fan of movies is the youngsters
True and women are still lovely in their 50's. 👍🏾
I loved this series as a kid!
I kept expecting him to say at the end, "...a painting in the twilight zone". First time seeing this. I like it! 👍
Thank you ,Have a great day!
I love this program and watched it when it was on television. I come here to ogle John Newland, too... :-))))) What a classy guy.
Newland's command of the English language is great
Good show
We always watched this show on Sunday night in the late fifties. Loved it so much. And another show like it called Inner Sanctum. suspense movie.
I always found the host John Newland to be one sexy guy. He reminds me of some of my parents waspy friends back in the 1960's. He has a hypnotic way about him. Love the show too.
I'm thinking about this. May I ask a question (?) In the 1960s . . . did you live on the East Coast (?)
This episode was a classic One Step Beyond very scary as a kid watching it 📺😵!
This seems to be the most remembered (and frightening) OSB episode . . .
I remember this show.great episodes. Good writing.
Yayyyy, one of my favourite shows. Awesome storylines. Ty 🙌
Great Episode,This and the one where the mother and son get caught in the Cave-In,I think it's called Epilogue,These two scared me the most when I was a kid.

I almost forgot about this series. I’m so happy I found it again!
I was 8 yrs old when this came out. I was probably in bed when this first aired. Saw them later.
Can't remember seeing this before. Love it. Going to watch more.
TIDBITS/ Doris Dowling 15 May 1923-18 June 2004, age 81. Born in Detroit, passed away in L.A. Married 3 times Artie Shaw (WOW !! She was his SEVENTH wife)) R. F. Blumote, L.B. Kaufman. She played an "escort" who took a liking to Ray Milland in "The Lost Week-End". She also came out in "The Andy Griffith Show", "Have Gun-Will Travel", "Alfred Hitchcock Presents". For some of you young'uns out there, you have to watch "Alfred Hitchcock Presents". He also was a MASTER story teller, an older version of John Newland, except a little funnier, but NOT as good-looking as Mr. Newland.
Playing a tough bossy woman probably wasn't too hard having growing up in Detroit...bwhahaha this is great show😂
I must've been around 5 when I saw this and it's the only episode I still remember to this day because it scared the crap out of me. Even more troubling, was why I was allowed to see this? [:-/...WHERE WAS MY ADULT SUPERVISION?! lol!
There is nothing in life to be feared, only understood.
These films are much more "healthy" for youngsters to stimulate their imaginations rather than the politically correct crap you get these days. First time I saw this film the final image on the wall scared the crap out of me !
That happened to me at 10 yrs old after watching Invasion of the Body Snatchers 😫
Too funny ! :DDDDDDD
@@anonymousjohnson976 Love this quote, but I don't remember who said it.
I remember as a child watching this show back in the early 60's. It scared me at that time, but I still couldn't resist watching it. hahaha Grandma's Angel's
This is even better than the Twilight Zone because these stories really happened
