Is Hades Really Worth It? ► Early Access Review

- Hades is an early access roguelite developed by Supergiant Games. This is probably one of the greatest early access builds I've ever played. Tight combat, interesting dialogue and story progression, and stunning visuals. Just about everything you could want, really.

It seems that Indie Game developers are better at making engaging games than most AAA developers.
"No one wants to play single player games". Please don't ever make games again EA.
Hey I want more of the game they have the licences ^^'
If they must stop making games they have to sell licences before to soemone else ^^
i would personally like more couch multiplayer. When split screen is done right (i.e. no small squares evenly an divided screen with a minimal hud would be fine.
Supergiant: Lets make an Early Access game?
Supergiant:
So basically... early access done right. Not a tech demo or alpha, but a developed project that just needs some more work.
Epic store exclusive......FLOP
It's been in Early Access to buy since 2018 though so of course its refined a lot since then
@@timweenie725 What have you got against competition? Just because STEAM dominates you have to comply to their every whim like a TOOL.
@@Wolfsheim23 buying customer bases isn't competition. When epic is doing is an actual attempt at a monopoly. Steam holds all the cards because it's the best - competitors like GOG etc. are out there, and they don't have Tencent's dick in them either.
No one should be against competition, but they should be against epic's tremendous PR campaign that forces you onto a platform with a fraction of the features to enjoy art.
Supergiant is basically the only studio I trust completely and unconditionally. The only thing that kept me from buying it immediately is that I blew too much money on Christmas gifts and don’t get paid again till Thursday.
what about CD project Red
@@Dragydragster what about it? Yeah we get that the Witcher 3 and its dlc are amazing bar none, but have you seen how they fucked their other game gwent? That whole community dropped hard after they changed the game a 3rd time with Homecoming. They are not a company without faults. While supergiant games have consistently made extremely polished and refined games back to back for the past 5 years that are universally beloved and nearly perfect but does not have the mass media appeal such as with The Witcher.
What about Team Cherry?
madrocts weeeeeeell...

Everyone makes mistakes, I guess.
That's just what I said yesterday when someone first told me that Supergiant Games had released a new title with Hades. I never had another developer on auto-buy status like this. All of their titles have been pure gold.
"Hades quite literally throws you into the pits of hell kicks your ass and then kicks it again." I don't know why, but this made me laugh harder then it should.
Something that isn't Hollow Knight?! Holy shit
It does look like Dead cells meets diablo kinda, which is not a bad thing imo.
Supergiant has me by the balls. I will buy any title they put out. Quality. Quality. Quality.
that means ur gay
Exactly, only thing that stopped me for now that I'd like to have all games under Steam, which is for
now unavailable :/
The use of the term "Big Dick Energy" let's me know that this is a man of quality.
Lucky he doesn't work for ea
Hades is living proof that early access doesn’t always mean bad.
Yeah, it's unfortunate that the rest of the industry is so keen on exploiting the concept so completely.
Supergiant Games + Rogue-lite + Greek Mythology= Gods, could this game be any more tailored for me to love it
Exactly how I felt when I first saw the trailer reveal during the game awards, I went I bought it few days after that XD
The voice acting alone makes this game worth it,Megan and Dusa are just...10/10.
Supergiant Games' voice acting and music are top notch
My boyfriend is Zeus’ voice actor! If for that reason only, go support it!
Well he does a very good job voice acting as him!
im greek and ill buy the game just because of its mythology :)
Chris Kiriakopoulos i mean i guess its a really amazingly made game.
Your boyfriend is super talented! I got the biggest chills from his creepy Hades voice!
Buy the game and my master will give me treats
I didn't become a fan of Super Giants until Pyre, then proceeded to get all their games. Hades is so good in this area as it is ike a three way fusion of their games. I normally hate grindy games, but the grinding here doesn't bother me there. The art is fantastic with equally great music. The witty banter between father and son, uncle and aunt gods/goddesses, and more keep me entertained. Great review!
had me sold at "the combat system of bastion". That is what made it my favorite game I have ever played
I've played a lot of Bastion and Transistor. And I've been playing the Hades early access for a few weeks now. The combat is a perfect meld of the two. It's a lot of fun, imo. Hoping they'll add a lot more to the game though.
Had no idea super giant was up to something. Thanks rusty, definitely going to be playing through this one.
Great video, definitely picking this up! you've earned a new sub
I'll just note on the "probable price tag increase in the future." thing, all of SuperGiants games are at 19,99$ with the exception of Bastion that's at 14,99$. So...Maybe not?
0:06 Clifford got an upgrade :0
the only reason am not buying this gorgeous game is because am waiting until it crawls back to steam
Considering how much support they've gotten on the Epic Games Store, it makes me skeptical if it will even be on Steam 🤔
@@nestmann36 I think its been said that once it comes out of early access its going on other platforms, and Steam is one of them. I myself am probably going to wait till it comes out on Steam, mostly just because I don't want to mess around with both Steam AND Epic Games.

Exclusivity hurts the customer in the end. I cannot in good conscious support this. This is in the end forkknife fuel.
@@alfredong6850 It's not exclusive. The early access builds are exclusive. After the game is finished it will most likely be on GoG, Ps4, and Steam. Look up the information rather than make claims.

I didn't want any potential spoilers before I try it out for myself

Meh. Just a couple speed bumps is all. Nothing too concerning.
Also, I'm doing work on multiple channels which takes a lot of effort.
Thanks for sticking around!
surprising that you didnt mention the soundtrack.
Another great video!
As soon as I saw this game at TGA I fell in love.
Now, at (current) end-game content I still cannot get enough of Hades.
Go buy it... Right now. No need to hesitate because it’s worth every cent.
Thx for the review, was a pleasure to listen to ya rusty. New sub here
Hey its rusty from TGN! and hes not shouting his mic off! Way to go rusty!
1 year later and its worth every penny, its just really good
Great review.👍
Looks like transistor 2.0 and that is awesome!
Bastion is one of my favorite games I can’t wait to play this. It will be a perfect follow up once I’m finished with AC Oddysey I’m stoked
Cant wait!
I was blown away by the amount of effort Supergiant put into the narrative, world, and characters of Pyre, which is basically a mystical NBA Jam. So I'm not surprised that they'd be able to do so with a roguelite either, even while still in Early Access.
I absolutely LOVED Transistor. Probably my most replayed game EVER
Great job!
3:09 im sold
2:57 cracked me up
I've been holding out because I want the full game but idk if I can wait much longer ^^'
I love this game, but I'm also a big fan of Bastion and Transistor (Pyre is still sitting in my Shame Pile, sadly). As Rusty says, the polish on Hades is quite astounding for an Early Access game, and there are at least weekly balance and bug-fixing patches while they're tuning it. Also, if you don't fancy using the Epic Games Store, Hades will be coming to other platforms, although SG has been coy about actually naming which ones.
Finally beat the Hydra last night, that is one tough boss...
Play Pyre. It's 100% worth it. I'd even say it's their best one yet.
Saw this is coming to the switch. I don’t have a windows pc, but I know I’m getting this as soon as the Switch release comes out.
Didn’t even know rusty covered this. Since the full game is out, hopefully he’ll cover this again.
I am playing Hades right now and holy shit is it good! My personal favourite part is how they managed to incorporate the story into your fighting so that it isn't all about you, like the court musician returning ( it is Latin don't blame me for forgetting ) and the fact that the boss characters remember their last fight with you ( example being the 1st Fury Sister who ffs is so damn hard ). My idea of this is what happens when you fuse the Diablo series for the place where they are, Doom for the complete murdering of everything by yourself idea and the Dark Souls series for the difficuly. My personal favourite weapon is the shield since it acts like Captain America's and I love that character.
Awesome review! Love your commentary. This game kicks so much ass!
Looks very cool, will this come to concoles though?
Really good video
saw cohhcarnage play this, it looked amazing, I think I will buy this when it is fully out.
Also if I am not wrong. Persephone was really in love with Hades and not how she is portraited here. (why I think so is what Ive heard from Overly Sarcastic Productions).
Awesome review man! I love watching your content! Have you tried Below yet?
Good job, mate. How about a theory video on this later, ehy!?! :)
If you plan to buy the game you should definitly considier to do so on the new Epic Store to support the developer.
Simplified calculation:
Price -> 20
Profit for Devs on Steam -> 14
Profit for Devs on Epic Store -> 17,66
That's close to 25% more profit for every game sold on the Epic Store :)
Yeah but fuck Epic Store tbh
@@MadguyWyleg we had the same discussion 14 years ago but when everybody was against Steam....
@@lisaasho364 Yeah? And what was a real alternative to Steam back then?
@@MadguyWyleg Retail stores. Steam had nothing to offer but several disadvantages in comparison to them.
So one of my friends dads in apart of the team making this game, so of course I began to check it out. But honestly? At this point I’m not even watching hades related videos because of my friends connection to the game. I’m just watching it because of how genuinely interesting it seems 😂
I bought the game during its pre-order stage in December. I'm not going to lie, the reason why I bought this game is because I think Zagreus (the main character) is hot. The game surprises me because of how much fun I had while playing a PC game. I'm more of a console gamer, but after playing Hades I now have a new love for computer games. Plus I'm a sucker for anything relating to Greek mythology.
I think they nailed and perfected the Rouge-lite formula, the addition of the story segments in between each dungeon run actually makes you feel far less worse about dying after an almost perfect run, they give your struggle and growth in-game depth and meaning and integrate with the game mechanics really well (and it helps that I'm sucker for Greek Mythology), also the voice acting is simply stellar (as is the music) 😍
Finally I have to say, Dusa is best girl, fight me 😏
okay ill buy it NOW !
God I'd love to hear you talk about Sundered sometime.
Backin track sounds a lot like D2, hopefully in-game music 👍
Its Supergiant so i'd buy when its on steam, i'm not going anywhere near the store of company that's puppeted by Tencent with my credit card until they add more features to compete with steam
Stupid question, but this caught my interest. What's wrong with Tencent? Are they really bad with card security or something?
Strongly affiliated with the Chinese government.
Can't you just use a paysafe card?
Ah. Just because of Epic Games? Your loss.
@@TheAlison1456 This is not about Epic this is about Tencent. Read his comment again.
I just finished Transistor (I know I'm late to the party) and I was hesitating on this because it looks so visually similar. Now I'm tempted to buy a copy....
Transistor is soo good. The combat didn't look so good to me at first, but playing it was amazing. I loved it so much, I did all the extra challanges. Breach() + Cull() is my favorite combination.
Transistor is my favorite game of all time, and I personally think Hades feels like a completely different game. Sure the art style is similar, but as a rogeulite the pacing is very different and the combat is a lot more frenetic. In Transistor you can choose your build and overpower enemies, use turn to give yourself some space, etc -- but in Hades you've got to use what you're given and healing is so rare that every hit counts, you've got to be a lot more deliberate about when and where you dash, attack, etc.
I fully recommend Hades but there's no shame in waiting for a game to leave early access before buying.
This looks really fun. What is the control scheme? Is this point and click? WASD? Does this have controller support?
WASD, but it's much better with a controller in my experience.
I just received my Limited run of Bastion with a beautiful thank you letter from Super Giant Games. I would definitely fork out more money for a physical PS4 copy of this game ^^
I would buy this asap if it was anywhere else but epic
I just finished the early access and I can't wait for the full game.
I love the sly diegetic comments you get after "finishing the game" about how Hades has closed off the rest of hell for 'construction', and Zagreus' sardonic reply that 'the mortals up above won't stand for being locked out for too long'. How often do you see games record voice lines that metafictionally reflect being in Early Access?
@@Vasharan Exactly! I loved that xD
It's worth? I am panning to buy it, but i need more opinions.
@@davidcuadrado5690 yes it's definitely worth it man.
@@mrmesolonely9602 Bought it, fucking addicted.
If only all of Supergiant's games came to the Switch. I'd snatch that shit up in an instant
Hades is when diablo and dark souls make a badass baby.
The combat of Hades is amazing, every time you die and get booted back to the beginning, the way you traverse Tartarus is never the same, every time you meet different gods, get different boons, different bonuses from other characters, it's an absolute blast,. Get enough different gods boons and the gods will start bickering over you, like when I had both Zeus and Poseidon, they would bicker who gets to give me their blessing, I can pick one to boost their boon even further and piss off the other, or get a combined boon of both which leads to some amazing gameplay. Definitely supergiants best game thus far, and that is saying something, cause from my experience, all their games have been amazing.
These kind of games are often too much about the combat with no story, so I´m glad to hear about the story elements.
Super giant games is at it again ♡♡♡
2:50 i like the art of aphrodite mwhahahha
1+ year later: Damn Nyx got real hot
Thanks, you mader me do the buying decision.
I really need to build my PC
FWIW I have done about 100 runs so far, so even in EA it was a very enjoyable game. They have been doing a good job of balancing the skills and weapons so far. There's still a ways to go to being a complete product, but even if I never played it, I got my money's worth out of it already. Everything after this is gravy.
Have you revisited Hades since it's official release? I'd love to hear what you think of the final product.
The difference i can say with the design between pyre and hades was that hades has black lined outlines on its art which makes it more distinct and bold whilst pyre largely refrains from outlining its art
Will it release on switch ?
just so you know you can dash out of the charge of the spear's spin attack. this moves the attack to where you dashed and doesnt stun lock you as much. it is an absolutely broken technique i didnt see you use at all in this video
Is this a single player only game or will there be any multiplayer support?
This game deserved more players
I'll buy it when it becomes playable on PS4, like their previous games.
This hit me by surprise but hey... should I still finish my own hobby game/ a platformer/explore game Hades Hideaway. I started prototyping in 2014 (right now testing out art styles privately and for a select few). I don’t have much time to work on it... so what you’re saying.... I am a bit lost now. Even though there is not much similarities I wanted to ask this in public to hear different ideas and thoughts....
Looking at your vids I don't see any reason you should change your approach based on Hades. It looks like what you're doing is very similar to limbo to me, and my intuition is that your game might benefit from not explicitly naming its setting -- but if you want to place it in Hades, people have been placing stories there for thousands of years and they'll keep doing it for thousands of years to come, so I wouldn't worry about that.
There are two different games that let you play a psychologist/detective cab driver coming out next year. Say of similarities!
The only thing your game seems to have with Hades in common is the name of a game.
the game worth to be played not only in steam
Nerf bastion
I'm already tracer
i see what ya did there.
i would love to get it but i would love for it to release on steam....
when early access is over they have plans for a wider release, including steam
I know this is like, a year late, but how dare you say that Dusa's cleaning is in any way comparable to her ability to hide her crush! She keeps that house sparkling!
once the game is available on steam, it's a buy. until then, it can wait.
It's only on Epic
@@saulg195 supergiant plans to make it available on more platforms once the early access is over. fixed your statement for you.

See you in 18 months when the game goes full release. Supergiant has a deal with Epic store for exclusive until release. You won't be seeing this on steam store for a very long time.
@@herpderp66 torrents might have something to say about that. :)

Nope! Epic Games launcher
That's during early access, according to their FAQ page. When the game is ready it'll be available on several platforms.
@@Rusty._ Thanks XD
I'll buy any Supergiant or Team Cherry game as of right now tbh.
yes it is worth it it is awesome!
Does the game have an ending yet? How long does the game take to finish?
not at the moment, the alpha end after you kill the boss of the second area, they won't spoil the ending before the final release i would say, but they put really fucking big update each month so.. And as for "finishing", currently if you are really good, i would say 3-4 run you can do it, but you need to be REALLY good, and that doesn't mean you would have seen everything, since certain event only triggers when you died a certain number of times, likes new bosses ect
2:24 At the risk of sounding contentious, but I'd say CrossCode earned the award for "best early access".
That said, SuperGiant Games have produced nothing but Gems so far. Hades doesn't _need_ the early access; I'm buying it on reputation alone.
In your opinion on the game so far, Is this going to be like a Darksouls hard or a Cuphead hard?
How are the persistent gameplay upgrades in the game? One thing I really dislike about rogue-likes is how you grind to get persistent upgrades to make the game effectively easier simply due to grinding and not increased skill. Binding of Isaac eschews that for just new unlocks and options, but how does something like Hades deal with it?
Hades is surprisingly pretty skill-based. A lot of the boons and drops you receive are randomized as well, so sticking consistently to a certain build isn't really possible. If you don't know how to play with the cards dealt to you, you'll have a bad time no matter how many upgrades you've plugged into yourself. At least that's the way I think the game is now. Might get changed, but who knows.
@@Rusty._ That doesn't really answer my question though, lol. I assume there are persistent upgrades then making it definitely a rogue-lite instead of a rogue-like? Was hoping they didn't do that as it really made games like Rogue Legacy unfun for me.
@@StefanLopuszanski there are persistent upgrades. Not sure anyone cares enough about subgenres differences.
@@StefanLopuszanski those presistent upgrades to me feels like its not groundbreaking it will help you get further but yet if you wont sharpen own skill how to play the game these doesnt matter... there is for example upgrade to heal some health between chambers but maximum healed is 3 so even lightest attack will get rid of that bonus hp... i personaly bought game inmeadiately (even tho im not really happy about another launcher and shop) because of Supergiant games i love and im really enjoying this game... even tho i feel like i suck really hard :o)
@@StefanLopuszanski this is very much a middle ground in terms of persistent upgrades. The most important ones are unlocked incredibly quickly, and a lot of them aren't too high impact. What I really appreciate is that you can re-spec any time, or even turn them all off, really quickly and with no penalties. There aren't a lot of numbers upgrades like Rogue Legacy -- you get extra dashes, some revives (these are the 2 important ones), backstab damage, after-dash damage, room by room regen, extra spell uses, and a few others.
In my experience with Rogue Legacy, it felt impossible until your numbers got higher, then it got easy. Never felt like my skill was improving. In Hades it's get good or die, no matter what upgrades you have. Grinding makes it easier but I'm 100% certain I could beat the current last boss with no persistent upgrades, just have to get better at dodging a couple of enemies.
Yes it is. SuperGiant games are amazing.
I don't buy Early Access though. Even though I own all SG games and will buy this one on release.
Short answer: absolutely
Why is it not on Steam?
Diablo 4 is lookin real good!
what means early acces? is the game not finished yet?
I have a huge problem with this game... it's that when I play it, I can't stop. It's like going in a time-eating vortex. I can't remember when was the last time a game got me so hooked that I couldn't stop playing it.. "ok, one more run and that's it" ran through my head so many times.
From seeing the videos I thought it was one of those classic Diablo clones, where you just point and click and rely on your stats... but no.. it's an action-packed game, where skillful dodging, well-timed attacks, building good synergies dominate. And the conversations... my god are there lots of them - and they are all voice acted. That's just insane. An incredible balance between hack-n-slashing and story. Even as an early access game, it has tons of contents and it really does feel like a fully polished and playable game. And if you're like me, who doesn't love games that spoonfeed and pamper you, and instead want you put the balls to the walls, otherwise they'll beat the crap out of you.. you're gonna love it.
In short, this game friggin' kicks ass. If you're debating whether to get it or not, do it. You really won't get disappointed.
Um, heck yeah this game is WORTH IT!!!!
DAMB is inescapable ask smii7y
So basically Bastion 2?
