As of me typing this comment, the 1.0 release of this game is out. It has WAY more content than i go over in this video, but all my major points on game design and what not still stand. Its worth a buy even more so now.

I feel like everyone is skipping Pyre when talking about Supergiant's track record. It might still be my favourite game of theirs. The world, the visuals, the narrative and characters and especially the super experimental gameplay just really came together beautifully for me.

    • @kangin14
      @kangin14 Před 4 lety +12

Agreed, but I think the reason he didn't delve deeper into Pyre here is because he was using Bastion and Transistor to explain the gameplay of Hades. Pyre was honestly unlike any other Supergiant games in that aspect, but I found myself to enjoy it surprisingly.

The one thing that I love about Hades is that I’m always constantly doing something. There was never a second went by where I was like: “Man, that was a waste of time.” I’m constantly fighting enemies, and when I’m not I’m constantly making decisions: which boon to take, which reward I want for the next chamber, whether I should enter a chaos gate (high risk high reward). Because the game goes room by room, there was never any backtracking. When I’m back at home, I talk to characters, give them nectar, buy upgrades from the contractor, sell my fishes, check the shop for deals, spend the darkness I collected for upgrades, upgrade my weapons. Then I would be choosing the combination of mirror perks, weapon, keepsakes and pact of punishment for my next run. I never feel like I’m wasting time in Hades like I do in some other games: getting lost in the map, backtracking, running through long hallways, solving stupid puzzles before getting to fight again, etc.

I usually avoid Early Access games like the plague, but I had to throw caution to the wind when I saw it was by Supergiant. They've taken two genres that I don't have much general interest in (sports, and rogue-lites) and made two of my favorite games in recent years with Pyre and Hades. The art, the gameplay, the story, the voice-work, the music, etc. It's rare to see a studio excel in so many areas regardless of the genre that they tackle.

I think the main issue I have with Early Access is just how many games abuse it at the expense of games that totally don't like Hades. Deep Rock Galactic, a game I've been sinking time into with some friends recently, is a good example of Early Access done right in my opinion. There's a clear road map laid out for the game, a lot of content to sink your teeth into already, and the game feels pretty polished as is. It's a shame that just like DLC, Early Access is abused more often than not.
Great review, by the way. I'll definitely pick this one up at some point, but probably not until I actually clear Transistor off my backlog.

Nice video! Supposedly next month's update will include new foes, according to the March update trailer, but I do want to note there is probably unlikely to be new bosses (maybe one more, if anything? but that's just me being hopeful), and the dev team have confirmed through recent Q&A sessions that there will not be further biome areas. So if you were looking forward to that happening by launch, it won't. There was talk of adding mechanics to existing bosses, but they're not really saying much besides that. I think they're largely just going to work on polishing what they have now.

Hey Jacob, just want to say your content is exceptional and you absolutely deserve more than 11k subscribers. In saying that, I also wanted to state I really disagree with the implication a few times throughout the video that Transistor's gameplay/combat style is 'gimmicky', or at the very least the connotations that are associated with the word. While it's definitely unusual I played through Transistor multiple times and found it really engaging and unique in terms of how the combat provides the player so many different options in which to approach every encounter, and each of these options are completely customizable. I'd put forth the argument that Transistor is in fact, not really an action game in the same vein as Bastion or Hades and is in fact a much more introspective experience when it comes to combat which forces the player to examine the resources and abilities at their disposal and then use them in a way that takes a bit more thought than the other entries in the series. I want to state that I do not think it is necessarily superior (though I do personally prefer Transistor's gameplay), but simply entirely unique. It's definitely a game that when charging in head first you will find much less enjoyment out of (if you play it like a kiting simulator, like you did in the gameplay cuts of it) than if you sit back and view it more like a tactical experience. I would be really interested to see a more in depth breakdown of your views of Transistor as I truly think your analysis is very on point for many of the games you have spent time on; however I really feel we differ in opinion here and I'd love to better understand your side of the argument.

Elysium is honestly terrible though, and after like 25 hours of gameplay its just a struggle to push myself to play through it anymore. Virtually every enemy feels cheep or inconsistent. I think Transistor is more of a storytelling game, than combat focused. And I actually enjoyed even the combat, trying various combinations with the functions. (Later, I played it on laptop with a mouse only...)

Great video. Super giant is my fav developer. They are so good. I really wanted to love Transistor but the mechanics felt clunky. There were some good ideas there tho. And yes the art and music is just mesmerizing

The boons honestly put me off a bit. If you invest into upgrading your attack for example, then you have little to no reason to use your special or cast. This kills the variety in combat, resulting in your primarly spamming attack.

This is the best review of this game. I really did not like the jarring movement..bastion is still better in terms of overall feel to me but I apreciate this game more because of this review. What I like is how the reviewer went step by step as to what weapns do and how they evolve. I bought it on early access to support the dev maybe ill try it again on the switch

Hades is weird because it's one of the games were everything sticks with you. When I heard the voice acting from your video it sent me back to when I played it all night. It gives you a weird nostalgia.

Hades was the god of the underworld and the name eventually came to also describe the home of the dead as well. He was the oldest male child of Cronus and Rhea. Hades and his brothers Zeus and Poseidon defeated their father and the Titans to end their reign, claiming rulership over the cosmos/

I gotta say, I also had issues with the 4th area my first couple times through, but while its initially frustrating, the terrain actual can help you as well. Almost all of the rooms in the area fall into 1 of 3 categories. 1) small room with slow moving enemies that leave aoes that make movement hazardous. These rooms can be beaten quite easily through patient bating of the enemy, and by slowing down the combat. 2) small room with medium speed enemies that fire projectiles. All of these rooms will have central pieces of cover, which are crucial for breaking line of sight with enemies when they a0ttack. These rooms require quick movements, dashing and staggering enemies before returning to safety (ranged builds also tend to excel in these rooms, allowing you to essentially fight from cover) and 3) large rooms with both close range enemies and ranged enemies. These rooms require fast movements drawing melee enemies away to isolate ranged enemies, before chasing them down. It should also be noted, that ranged aoe builds actually make these areas trivial in difficulty, though they can be somewhat less effective in the previous boss fight, and the final boss fight, which makes these builds high risk reward in terms of escaping. Ultimately, after playing the game for quite some time, I quite enjoy the 4th level, and appreciate the change of pace.

Doesn't the sword have all four aspects available too, at the time of this video? I think you need to go through some kind of questline and when you're done you unlock Excalibur. Yes It's literally called Holy Excalibur under the "Aspect of Arthur" title.

I bought this game - well I think at first release- , and even then it could have been considered a full "Indie roguelite" release. Every major update felt like what other companies release as a15 $ DLC. And they arent even out of Early access right now. Splendid game.
Also: Remember "what if chess made you horny - thats Fire Emblem"? This is "what if every Greek God was hot - the Hackn slay"

You kinda got what roguelites are wrong, roguelite is a term invented by elitist roguelike devs to describe a game that is a deviation on the Berlin interpretation of roguelike that being a game that has turn based combat, grid based, permadeath and random generation as game mechanics to name a few. Cool video though, I liked that you played a clip from transistor because it reminded me how good that games music is.
