Yep, these sounds still hold up because they come from East/West and Spectrasonics. Possibly Spitfire Audio too. I grabbed Composer Cloud and Omnisphere 2 in 2019 and instantly recognized so many sound patches and samples from Sacred 1 (and Star Craft too lmao). Unsure of who the composer was, but the arrangements still impress me to this day. Hell, you could release them in a modern game and people wouldn't bat an eye (too much). Good stuff!!

@@archmagejohnpaulii6287 1 was not as cheesy as 2 for sure. It was one of my gripes with Sacred 2 - it was much more bright and vibrant, and went all in on the cheese at every corner. In Sacred 1, there is cheese for sure, a lot of it hidden in gravestone messages or sidequests, but the world overall really feels like a very dark medieval world. Sacred 2 on the other hand had much more of a high fantasy vibe with sprawling civilizations.

Also they "hid" alotta easter eggs within the game. Man, this brings back memories. I spent so many hours playing Sacred when I was younger, back when there was still an online community and the servers were still on. Even nowadays I still boot it up from time to time, and when I'm lucky I find people to play it on LAN with. Great vid!

    • @LordHonkInc
      @LordHonkInc Před 4 lety +11

Same! I can't quite put my finger on what exactly it was, but something about this game, to this day, hasn't been replicated in any other ARPG since. I remember just being blown away with how much diverse content there was. Even back then it just "felt" bigger than diablo, and in retrospect still feels more diverse than games like torchlight 2 (which I also really like). Like, all I remember from Diablo 2 is "forest, sand, bog, hell, 'stay a while and listen'" but with Sacred I can still (faintly, granted) remember windmills and farmers, the castles, the towns... it felt like a diablo clone looking up at baldur's gate.
Now, the sequels... not my cup of tea, unfortunately. But I'm glad this one got made, literal days of fun with my friends at lan parties back when :)

I also played this extensively in my younger days, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Difference was I never played online (lack of internet and all), but i still enjoyed playing by myself. I don't believe I got very far into the game as I played with all the races and characters and kept them all to pretty much the same level. I also played the second one quite a bit, but same story as before. I was quite disappointed when my old af PC broke down (had it for like 10 years and never changed parts) and I couldn't play them, or any other game since. But I agree with the 3rd being rather shit. While the previous 2 had their own charm and style, the third was just a colorful diablo ripoff. It wasn't even done well. I got it as a gift for the 360 as my mother knew at the time I loved the previous two. But besides the third, the previous 2 were quite fun, from what I remember. What I especially enjoyed is the differences between the characters/races. But yeah, I'm glad to see that all these obscure and random games I enjoyed in my childhood weren't entirely ignored by others, so thanks for the video, gave me a serious case of happy nostalgia

One of my favourite things about this game is that there is some items that instakills any enemy that sees you if they are low level enough, combne that with the fact you could get your fully leveled and geared character and get it into a new game and it led to all sort of hilarity, my favourite being a group of thugs that posed as allies during one quest and then when they reveal their plot they literally just die.

  •  Před 4 lety +83

Battle mage if you get a lot of wind gusts. Wind gusts DOT and have all damage types, so nothing has perfect resistance. Also, beyond a certain point you start blasting enemies out of screen. So they can't get close, and by the time they get back to you, you can cast again and they lost a ton of health from DOT. Also, you can put all your buffs in am single combo.

There's a bit more about the scaling areas:
It does not scale unlimited. Each area has a minimum level, a maximum level and I guess you could call it a "level adjustment".
Let's say for example an area has a minimum level of 5, max of 10 and adjustment of +1.
That means the game will try to make all enemies in the area one level higher than you, but only between 5 and 10. Any character 4 or below will face level 5 enemies, because that's as low as it goes.
Once you hit level 5, you'll see level 6 enemies. At level 6 you'll see level 7 and so on until you reach level 10. Here the game can't spawn level 11, because that's above the max level, so the enemys will remain at 10.
So it is possible to run into zones that you are totally overleveled or underleveled for. Especially on bronze you'll quickly find yourself higher than the max level of the zones or if you play on Silver and only rush the main story, you can quickly find yourself up against enemies that are significantly higher than you.
The Orc island was an easer egg. Mal-Orc-A is a play on the island of Malorca in the mediteranean, an absolute hotspot for German party tourists. And some might argue that those party tourists do behave rather orc-like in her vacation. :P
The underworld wasn't part of vanilla Sacred and was added with the expansion (together with the playable Dwarf).
Also the original German voice acting is quite a bit better than the poor english translation.
Nice to see that the game does get at least a little international attention. I was under the impression that outside of the German speaking countries this game was pretty much unknown. A real shame, since I always prefered it over Diablo 2. In fact between the "triumvirate" of Diablo 2, Titan Quest and Sacred 1, Diablo 2 is acually on the third spot for me, with Titan Quest taking the crown and Sacred coming in second.
That's not to say that D2 is bad, on the contrary, I just like the other two even more than D2.

From my perspective, I think most of the "issues", if I can call them like that, from the Sacred 1 game has been fixed in the Sacred 2 game, starting from quest drops (recently I even got a set item from a 2-star side quest), chest drops (happened to me a lot during my playthroughs to find cool unique jewelry by looting chests and boxes) and side quests in general (I find side quests more entertaining and story-focused in Sacred 2 than in 1).
Nevertheless, both Sacred 1 and Sacred 2 games are incredible even in 2020 (you'll always discover something new into them even after playing them for 10 years straight).

Sacred was huge in germany back when it released and later again when it's expansion came out, basically every kid with a PC played it with their siblings because of the great coop implementation that offered so much more than it's competitors. :D It was a "mini coop MMO", right before people started playing WoW more and more. It even appeared on main stream TV channels a few times with it's own little segments. Sacred 2 didn't have that impact and sadly was the game that killed the company behind it, but Sacred 2 was great too, i hope you enjoy your time with the content they managed to get in before they had to close the studio.

The sidequests do one important thing that you seem to have missed, they show you locations you might have missed while exploring. Originally, the sidequests were all random, and they changed this to static sidequests along the way. I feel it was a mistake, but they still point you to locations you might not have gone to otherwise.

A little known fact by the way, loot drops from monsters ARE different in various areas, and if you really know the well hidden places, you can get some really fancy stuff. ( there is for instance a dungeon area where all mobs only drop rings and amulets, which is a great place to farm some good ones to socket into your gear ).

I played this as a kid on every holidays because we would go to my aunt and my cousin had Sacred on his old computer xD I rly enjoyed it even tho I was sooo bad at it. I didn't understand english so the quests made no sense to me I would just go to the marker and figure it out. I also don't believe that I ever made it further then the first two cities and then the desert where I died... a lot. You would ask why go to the desert if the main quest is taking you somewhere else... well I didn't know that. And also I always tried to get to the island in the bottom left of the map. The one with the volcano. It was my only goal xD I don't know why, I guess I just rly wanted to know what's there.... I never made it ;)
Now a couple weeks ago I bough the game and decided to finally play it and finish it. The first thing is that I can't believe how big the map actually is. This thing is huge! I would have never explored it all as a kid xD Also there are some quests that give you time limit and I wouldn't have known that back then sooo I would def fail them.
The story line is cool, the quests usualy require you to go for something or escort someone somewhere or fight something, which is not a lot but I still did find it fun. There are hidden places with interesting things which always gives me joy when I find them. The voice acting is tragic and some enemies are sooo anoying with stuns and spells that keep you in place. I didn't encounter many bugs yet except for the one with the one quest in the desert that buggs 4 other quests :/ which I can't believe the creators didn't fix by now.
I don't know when I will finish it since I decided that I will uncover every black fragment of the map... which takes a looong time. Overall I do enjoy the game wayyy more then I thought I will which is a big plus.

I'm so glad you did a video on this classic! Sacred 2 is my favorite isometric ARPG of all time, and in my top 10 games of all time. After putting around 1000 hours in it on console and PC (multiple playthroughs and difficulties, of course), I decided to support its predecessor, Sacred Gold. With any franchise, going back and playing earlier games usually ends in disappointment, but I really loved Sacred Gold and dropped a few dozen hours on it in a week (and more time since). Literally the only negative I have to say about it is the fact that enemies can snare you, like you pointed out. The mounted combat continues to be something I hold in high regard as someone who usually doesn't play with mounts in games because I hate mounting/dismounting all the time. I wouldn't doubt that Blizzard is taking heavy inspiration from the Sacred franchise for Diablo IV; they could stand to. Try as I might to enjoy them, the Diablo games were always missing that "special something" that the Sacred franchise has always had.
I think you'll like Sacred 2. The corny humor and crazy rock music can be hit or miss (it's a hit for me, but others are turned off by it), but its game world is one of the largest ever created (last I researched it was only outmatched by Just Cause 2) and the developers put so much love and care into making its locations unique so the world doesn't feel samey. There are entire hidden cities you can only reach by going through series of caves and connected tunnels, and only the most ardent explorers find them since neither the map nor directions from quests reveal them. There are too many good things I could say about the game, so I'll stop while I'm ahead.
It's a shame about Ascaron's dissolution almost immediately after Sacred 2's release, however. And as for "Sacred" 3, well...us fans don't acknowledge that travesty.

It is a really cool game on a lot of levels. I think this game was really innovative in not making melee and magic work through different systems, instead everything being based off regen time. I played this game when I was a kid with my siblings. My brother was a dark elf, my sister was a vampire, and I was a mage-warrior. Combos were definitely the most broken thing in the game. I remember I leveled everything to the max and I had one single favorite combo: the 4 flame spyrals of hell. Any enemy who walked behind me would get literally mauled by my flames. I used to exterminate dragons with those things. Good times...
Also, after I ended the whole game with my battle mage (mage-warrior, in my language lol), I ended up re-playing it with the elf-ranger (the perfect combo for her was the 4 following arrows... I literally needed to summon it only once to absolutely tear apart anything), then, after her, the dwarf (absolutely funny with that great cannon of his😂) and last but not least, the gladiator. I've never finished the story with him, because I stopped playing the game altogether 😅

    @AlAtar360 Před 2 lety +1

Thanks for the great video. I just have a remark on 7:38. Why would you think this combo system to have some kind of error? It was definitely intended to work this way. the UI telling you the level of the combat art while you're creating it kind of gives that fact away. It will also charge you extra gold when upgrading the same combat art indicating they kinda knew what they were doing during development. This would allow you to make powerful combo's from buff gear in your stash. You could use this in reverse as well. You could strip your character and make a combo of low level combat arts and keep it that way so that it recharges quickly and cast it again quickly. Great for combat arts which are one point wonders. In any case, if it wasn't meant to be this way, they would surely have noticed and taken this functionality away in the expansions.

So like, a discord is neat, but it's really for die hard fans, and a patreon is not something I participate in, but go for it. I think community outreach for someone like you is done best by just asking stuff at the end of a video. Your twitter is also a good place for outreach. Honestly though, I just enjoy the games you review. You have a strong format, al although I don't always agree with you, I find your approach refreshing. Just keep plugging away and ride that algorithm. One request though, don't stop yourself from going into detail, I get you might not want to do it, but if you feel strongly about it, do it. It WILL improve your sub count.

Sacred first was conceived as a videogame named Armalion, an adaption of The Dark Eye, the big German fantasy tabletop RPG. You can find a gravestone ingame for "A. R. Malion". I almost believe there are gravestones for "The Lady, the Mage and the Knight" too. Which was a similiar project with similiar outcome at Larian studios.

I have many fond memories of this game and still return to it occasionally. Sacred Gold added a number of stupid filler side quests to the game (like "fetch my dumb friend Jack Rabbit"). In the base game, at least to my memory, there was always some nice writing and thought put into quests, even if they were mechanically simple.
Sacred 2 was a disappointment for me personally, because the controls in 3D felt less satisfying and the extremely oversaturated color scheme hurt my eyes xD
It didn't feel as much like a believable world anymore.

deffinitely one if my fav games when i was a kid, I mean, I probably spent hundreds of hours in this world playing multiple playthroughs, but the funny thing is that only now have I learned how those damn skills and combos work:Dd always ignored them, great video btw! maybe would appriciate a bit more of a underworld dissection, but still great nontheless:D

Love it that the Goblins still speak German.
It was a great Game back in the day and still is.
Still love the look of the engine,a bit similiar to divine divinity

Yeah man, check out Sacred 2. Tried getting my head around it years ago but could ever settle in. Interesting classes and huge world but floaty combat and endless text quests made it difficult to continue.
    Maybe you’ll have better luck.
    Cool vid!
    Cheers

Have very fond memories of playing this game for days on end and going on the phone with my friend to discuss what kind of areas and secrets we'd discovered. Good times :)

    man this game was awesome
the only thing i didnt like about it was that even thou u can fight dozens of rare/unique enemies the loot can still be shet and then u randomly kill a grey mob and it gives u OP weapon/armor/trinkets

It was a pretty popular game in Russia when I was a kid. I've played a pirated version with German voices and Russian text. I don't know German but holy shit it sounded awesome and creepy as hell. The English voiceover doesn't have nearly as much character as the original German one.

I personally don’t mind side quest. I find helping common folks endearing. Maybe it’s just my vivid imagination where I imagine every quest as small story.)
But yeah, dungeons are mostly boring. I’m lucky to find a note there or some quest. Usually there’s just spiders and small amount of gold.

How can you not have Baldurs Gate or any of the infinity engine games on that timeline. I can't think of a more influential iso metric RPG. Baldurs Gate 2 is probably my favorite game of all time but I guess Sacred is more diablo than Baldurs Gates real-time with pause combat
    Great vid as always!

Those really were quite different. Actual RPG's as opposed to action RPG's. Less about the numbers and the random loot drops and more about narrative and characters. Not really in the same vain as Sacred or Diablo, but really enjoyable all the same.
