  • Glen Schofield, the co-founder of Sledgehammer Games and the creator/director of Dead Space, goes in-depth on the development of the classic third-person horror shooter. Glen set out to create the scariest video game of all-time, borrowing gameplay elements from Resident Evil 4 to create a product with a unique blend of horror and action. Always upping the ante, the Dead Space team decided to create a massive dreadful tentacle that attacks and drags the game's protagonist around the environment. Little did they know, this element would prove far more difficult to develop then they had ever realized..

It was not just more action based, it was also the first Game EA used to try out "microtransaction" in a Full Price Game. If you really try to compare the 3rd with the first 2 Games, then you maybe see, that the 3rd tries to be a "different" Games.
The same happen btw with "F.E.A.R.". The 3rd Game was also more action based and the "Horror" parts are nearly none existend. I know that Fans can be "brutal" if it comes to there beloved series, but if it comes to try changing the Series overall, im totally understand the way of how a fan thinks.
We also seen this with Resident Evil. Even with good sells of RE6, Capcom did go back more to Horror again, because RE is Horror, not just "pew pew".

Having played through both the Callisto Protocol and Dead Space remake recently, it's crazy how these 2 games were directed by the same person. Callisto felt like an empty shell of a copy that doesn't understand the source material at all.
It had good graphics and decent atmosphere but also the worst combat system i have ever seen in a game which ruined all immersion and tension. The Dead Space remake wasn't even made by the same people yet they clearly understand what made the original Dead Space great and improved upon every single aspect.

I don't feel like its fair to equate the result of a game with the ability of one person. Games are built on the backs of teams, and studios, and publishers, and in amongst all those bodies, a lot of things can go wrong
Its easy to want to point the finger to one spot and have that have all the answers. But game development ain't easy. And so we gotta be considering the reasons for why one doesn’t turn out great isn't also

That's why I like single player games more akin to Skyrim, where you develop your character, rather than games like uncharted, where the character has a backstory. I might be in the minority with that, but it's just what I enjoy. Effective use of discord to evoke a deep sense of unease. Screeches, loud noises that make you mutter quietly under your breath "be quiet, stop making noise, they will hear you!" The only other games like this that have produced this feel in a game would be Alien Isolation (also excellent use of sound) and much further in the past System Shock (excellent environment for a game of its age).

Well, this video didn't aged well.. Glen went from survival horror's hero going against EA's goliath too Calisto Protocol failed launch.
So many hopes on him and his new project and in the end, it looks like the other team behind dead space remake understand much more the licence and where to bring it to become a modern game. By deciding to transform the game with new propositions as for example the level design where the Ishimura will now be interconnected and an AI can change the setting of a room by throwing monsters at you like in left 4 dead and turning the lights down.
Calisto feels like a copy of a copy, that tries to recreate the feeling of dead space without understanding what made it stand out..
The artistic direction, the story, some moments, the ending.. Everything is a call back to dead space, lack of subtlety and completely missing the target.
The biggest example is in the details. Dead space wanted the player to be immersed in the universe and decided to integrate the HUD in the game.
And Calisto chooses to follow the same design but put big spikes in every room to throw enemies at. It feel so artificial.. Its a detail but it matters.
Everyone call this man the creator of dead space, however, he isn't. Not by himself! He surely brought the game to life but he wasn't alone? An entire team brought his vision to life. Even after he left we got dead space 2 and extraction that are pure gems that refined and explored other territories for the franchise.
I'm confident for Dead space future, and i hope that Glen will finally let go of Dead space and focus on an entire new horror concept, because he definetly lost against the remake. Better come with a total new proposition. Pls just don't make it another 3rd person survival horror game in space :)

      Basically= Money/Marketing move.
So now a lot of skins etc, From Callisto can come to PUBG. And if Callisto becomes very succesful, it could benefit PUBG and upcoming games in that series. And could help PUBG, to become even more succesful.

I know I'm probably in the minority here, but I honestly believe that the mid-late 2000s were the peak of video games and stories. So many big title games the last decade have been colossal let downs on almost ever release and never lived up to their hype and portrayals.

@@joshuakhaos4451 I don't think you're really a minority here but I do disagree with you. What's happened is that guys like these don't make up the bulk of AAA teams anymore. Sure there's still some of them but most of them are after maximizing profits, their careers, etc. A team that has even some of those people is going to get dragged down some.
The major companies are also just about all completely creatively bankrupt. They lost their best creative leads along the way and now they just have bland corporate ones. I mean just look at Ubisoft. Then again, some newer game studios really break ahead of the pack some times. The difference is that you don't hear about them as much because they don't have the advertisement and popularity of the long standing powerhouses of gaming. AA studios and emerging AAA studios are where I think you'll see the best games. Some indie games are also fantastic.

We need that design back. A solid experience. Everything can be earned by playing the game period.
I really hate how RE2R music was missing the entire game. Just sound FX. Foot steps. Shuffling. And Mr X had one stomp sound.
I thought the game was broken. Even after patching it. But no the music was non existent, until end level and boss.
The original RE2 soundtrack was made dlc, not optional with purchase of the game. And lots of gear made inaccessible. And the game itself was limited and not fun to play.
*Numerous bugs = ammo would disappear, some items would not even be in inventory. QTE were non responsive till after patch. But some interaction did not work still. And Save data (continue from last save would throw your play time set back 30 minutes to several hours / only option is to load a manual save, but apparently there is a save data bug 🤦‍♂️ I don't get it. How did it pass testing like this?
Although the character and enemy designs were fantastic, everything was hard to see. Brightness wasn't fixed either.
