  • The video shows the timelapse of the history of minimum wage in Europe by country from 1999 to 2022. A minimum wage is the lowest remuneration that employers can legally pay their employees-the price floor below which employees may not sell their labor. Most countries had introduced minimum wage legislation by the end of the 20th century.

Too bad the wages say nothing about living comfort... Minimum wage in The Netherlands means nothing when 70% goes to rent. I have €1500 fixed costs per month (1250 rent, 150 health care, 50 other insurances, 20 phone, 30 gym) and groceries became crazy expensive. Can barely make it through the month with just me and my (studying, not working) girlfriend whilst earning €2700 after tax.

Why not buying a house / apartment instead of renting one ? The rent would be replaced by the monthly loan to the bank.

@WawamuStats Hi! How do I convert Canada and the USA's various state and provincial minimum hourly wages into a monthly minimum wage? Do you have a standard hour per month that you are using?
Here in Canada each province sets its own "absolute maximum allowable hours" per week or month, "its own hours per week or month before overtime must be paid", and within that each company sets its own standard hours per week. The numbers for "hours per week before overtime must be paid" vary from 40 to 54 in provinces that do it weekly. But standard hours vary from 34 to 44 in most companies.

To anyone wondering... yes the Nordic countries don't have minimum wage at all. The workers' unions are so strong there that they are able to negotiate the wages with the employers' conferderations, so there is no need for state wide minimum wage. The state usually only gets involved as intermmediators between the negotiators.

The Dutch government has established the minimum wage by law. The minimum wage protects workers from underpayment. The government strictly combats underpayment, for example by imposing high fines on employers.
The amount of the fines for the employer:
    - € 1,250 if the wages are paid in cash.
    - € 2,000 if the employee does not receive holiday pay or thirteenth month salary.
    - € 10,000 if an employee is paid less than minimum wage.
    - € 12,000 if the wage specification is incorrect.
    - If everything is not correct, the fine is € 40,000 per employee.
